8:00 am
i hope you have a great day, until then. >> you're vacfrom vacation and working hard. put it back to work. we will see you later today, bye, everybody. >> labor day is over just in kind you were wondering. the race for the white house is heading to the home stretch, can you believe it? the election tightening nationally as hillary clinton and donald trump hit battleground states very hard. hello, i'm jenna lee. john: i'm john scott, clinton and trump in a virtual dead heat in race. trump is up by 2 in margin of error, first lead in the national polls since the republican convention. that survey is a reflection of last fox poll.
8:01 am
their planes parked within side of each other and took time to speak to media on plane while clinton fending off questions about classified server. >> i take classification seriously. the fact i couldn't remember certain meetings, whether or not had occurred doesn't in any way affect the commitment that i had and still have to the treatment of classified materials. john: just a short time ago, mrs. clinton took questions from the media aboard to florida. trump goes to virginia and north carolina. >> john, good morning, to you, you can imagine the donald trump campaign is over the moon about the new poll numbers, they had
8:02 am
been predicting and donald trump is starting to close the gap. when you take a look at the numbers, among likely voters, ahead 2 points, 45 to 43. likely voters, say, yeah, we are going to go out to the polls. if you look at the broader range, registered voters, hillary clinton still leads about 3 points there, but that is a big difference from the numbers at the end of july when she led by 8 points. so there has been a move of 5 points toward donald trump's direction. one of the reasons why, take a look at this. he leads hillary clinton by 20 points, 49 to 29 among independent voters. today he's at the sand her center this afternoon 2:00 o'clock for a big military event here in virginia beach this morning campaign releasing letter of support from 88 retired flag officers saying they are throwing support coldheartedly on donald trump.
8:03 am
one of them butler, acknowledged that initially it was a difficult decision to back donald trump but now says according to fox and friends who interviewed him, he's very comfortable with his decision. here is butler. >> i think that donald trump is smart enough to take the advice of military leaders around him. in the military there are two types of leaders, warrior leaders and politician leaders and the people that i know that are working with his administration and advisers are all warriors and people that i have the upmost respect for. >> of course, all of this is heading toward that first debate confrontation september the 26th when donald trump and hillary clinton will face off on the stage against each other for the very first time. aboard his plane last night in ohio, donald trump confirmed that he is in for all three debates. listen to this. >> i'm preparing somewhat like i
8:04 am
prepared for the other debates. i think i'm preparing. i enjoy the debating process. obviously i did well on the debates, polls they did right after the debates. >> what changed your mind? >> hurricanes, natural disaster. >> now, it's not unheard for a hurricane to hit in late september and, of course, we had one that was taking aim at long island but likely there probably won't be a problem with hurricanes towards the end of september. and john, we should point out that today's event in virginia beach all about the military, tonight in north carolina, donald trump is going to hit hillary clinton very hard making the argument that she could not pass the security clearance. trump campaign releasing 20 points that suggest she could not qualify for security
8:05 am
clearance and former mayor giuliani would not hire her because she could not pass security clearance. a lot to talk about, john. john: things do start heating up after labor day. >> they do. they certainly do. >> mrs. q&a the closest she has come to news conference in nine months. she took a few questions moments ago. she's running even with national polling. when you look at battleground state polls, clinton is up by a few points but still leading. let's bring in joe who served as campaign manager and fox news contributor. great to have you both, miniature think tank. let's put the polls aside for a moment because we are going to talk about that over the next several weeks. joe, let's talk about momentum, who has the momentum right now?
8:06 am
>> i think it was all going to close after the convention, trump's went away first, hers has gone away now. the country has been so polarized for years that this was always going to be closed in the popular vote and we are seeing that. >> ron, do you see one candidate or the other having the momentum right now? >> well, i think clinton's momentum has been -- now we are seeing the kickoff in fourth quarter at this point and it's going to be a roller coaster going from now until the election. i think the person -- for trump he's got to have to advocate he's the safe-change candidate and try to keep putting the referendum back on hillary clinton on whether or not she's fit to be president and whether or not people want a third-term
8:07 am
obama administration and safely lead the country without taking people -- taking himself off message. >> it's an interesting term. safe change, joe, do you think that'll work for donald trump? >> i don't know. i mean, look, i think, the problem first of all we are putting emphasis on national polls. this is -- al gore won the popular vote, but in states that are battleground, yes, as you pointed out, jenna, hillary has a slight advantage but she has advantage on all of them and at this point trump has to win, clean the sleight, clean them all. you're going to see the candidates, both in campaigns doing real battle in battleground states that are close but hillary has the advantage in all of them and she only has to win a couple to get to that magic 270 number that makes you the president of the
8:08 am
united states and trump still has a long way to go. the cnn poll is good for him, no doubt about it. it's going to get his supporters more enthused. >> he's dragging us back to the numbers. you see hillary clinton ahead. in north carolina up according to real clear politics 1.2 points. in virginia she's up by 5 points. we talked about temperament, trust worthiness, what do you think donald trump needs to concentrate on in those specific states to really make a difference in the results? >> well, look what's going to be clear this is not going to be a conventional last couple of months of the campaign and yes, the battleground states are going to be important because that's where it's -- that's where the tipping point is going to happen. but i do think that we are going to have some very significant wild card moments that could shift towards donald trump, it
8:09 am
could go to hillary, it could go either way. i don't think that this thing b is baked just yet even though history says that the candidate -- the candidate that's down at this point usually loses. i just think anything can happen at this moment. >> anything can happen and different things catch fire. joe, there's been a lot of different reports about hillary clinton's health. i'm not here to bring you here as medical expert on that. but jennifer griffin got a question because she's accepting questions from reporter and we noted that at the top of the show, jennifer grif fip asked her about allergies because she had could having yesterday that was caught on live television for several minutes and apparently hillary clinton said, that she upped her anehestamines and little things like donald
8:10 am
trump, what church he got married or hillary clinton's coughing, something like that can get a lot of attention and impact voters. >> no, it sure can but if she's not the only american that has been upping her antihestimines. having worked as many campaigns that i have worked with, any candidate still standing today, that includes trump, they've been through the gauntlet for -- you know, for a couple of years, 18 months, 15 months for trump. if they're still standing, i don't think there's really any health questions be that serious. no way to run --
8:11 am
>> i will save your response for next time. duo know from trump's doctor that he's the healthiest individual to run for president in the history of the country. i'm sure they will answer questions about their health. great to have you both. thank you very much. 62 days before the election, polls are tightening. you see that nationally but what about battleground state polls, where is your head up for this? go to foxnews.com/happening now to join the conversation. john: president obama's obama trip to laos but asian tour has not come without controversy from china's snubbing him on his arrival to a difficult meeting with russian vladimir putin on the on top of a comment from president of philippines.
8:12 am
>> president obama will speak to rodrigo duarte but the meeting remains cancel and after duarte referred to president obama as a son of a-we don't go to the end of that, this is language, though, that he has also reserved for other world leaders like the pope. president and dutarte will not speak formerly, however, because the white house says the comments from the philippine would have overshadowed important issues in the meeting. difficult start to the trip with chinese-american officials arguing and screaming about u.s. press access and whether the president will leave air force one in china using u.s. provided stairs or chinese stairs, he's in laos now. he has met with the president of

south korea, they discussed the recent provocations by north korea, the missile launch from yesterday, three ballistic missiles. the president says and u.s. allies should essentially ramp up sanctions again against north korea. >> north korea needs to know that provocations will only invite more pressure and further deepen isolation but if it is willing to recognize international obligations and denuclearization in the korean pe none sella. the opportunity to dialogue with them are there. >> the president also met on his trip with russian vladimir putin, producing another icy moment between the two. they fail today reach a cease fire on syria. president obama said they discontinued cyber intrusion, the russian president vladimir putin deny it is russian government had anything to do

jenna: we have been covering the news over the last week or so of different u.s. navy ships being harassed by iranian vessels and now we have news of yet another
8:18 am
incident between our ships and the ships by the iranian revolutionary guard. according to our pentagon producer lucas who was able to break this news, we have now have learned that other iranian vessels have come very close to our ship over the weekend, one about 100 yards away from the ship, a football field in length and one iranian ship stopped in front of the coastal patrol ship in the gulf there. so as we are watching this, the bigger story is this, over the last year our ships have been harassed double than in past years and there's a big question about what comes next as the iranian ships get closer. in the past week we offered a warning shot to get the ships out of our path and now the question is what is next. a key part of the world, a lot of oil goes through the transport area and we don't want to see our ships being harassed
8:19 am
by anybody, let alone the iranian revolutionary guard. the big news today and we will continue to watch it for you, john. john: fox news alert on three big weather stories today. hermine still lingering off the u.s. east coast creating dangerous conditions along the shorelines, there's also a severe storm threat across the midwest today and another hurricane making landfall in a tourist hot spot in the west. meteorologist maria molina is following all of this, she joins us live from the fox weather center. maria: hi, john, i want to start out with hermine because this storm system is the one that we have been tracking for several weeks still lingering out here off the coast of the northeast bringing light showers across portions of long island and new england and the biggest concern with the system is really beach erosion and potentially some
8:20 am
localized coastal flooding that can be occurring specially during high tides. take a look how much of a slow-mover this is. the key is moving to the west, getting closer to the coast and we will continue to impact us out here, currents are going to be a threat and rough surf. that's the threat across portions of the northeast, gusty winds making it on shore with parts of new england reporting tropical force wind gusts and still windy out there for at least a few more days. today we have the risk for severe weather out here not just for damaging winds and large hail but even for tornadoes across portions of wisconsin, southeast minnesota and north eastern portions of iowa, right now a lot of rainfall out there so we should see how that would be impacting the air mass out there. quickly, we have a hurricane that made landfall near cabo and a lot of the tropical moisture

>> the media is protected of crooked hillary. very, very protective and it's shocking to see what's going on. and i sort of enjoy it because you see that and people get it, you know, people get it, they see what's happening. john: accusing the press of protecting hillary clinton and misrepresenting his words. so is that happening? molly is senior editor of the federalist. what do you think about what
8:26 am
donald trump said there in that opening sound bite, molly? >> this is both donald trump deflecting and as they say in basketball if you're playing you're losing, also true that the media are really unable to be impartial in this election and the thing that donald trump should be prepared by this, media bias is baked into a cake when you're a republican candidate and it reminds me of what they said about goinger rogers dancing with freda stair, she had to do everything backwards and in high heels. that's what it is to be republican in media. he likes to talk about media bias but he knew what he was getting into when he began the race. john: you think she -- he shouldn't be bringing it up? >> media has been bad but this time they are even worse. they are admitting that they -- many of them are admitting that
8:27 am
they have no desire to try to be impartial, they say that covering both candidates fairly would be unfair to the overall race and doing things to help hillary clinton particularly with the fundamentals of the race. she has weaknesses in terms of her support for current immigration policy, support for the obama administration foreign policy, a lot of americans are dissatisfied with the current direction of the country but he has a point when he says they're not covering covering the dissatisfaction, underlying issues, again, it's not his place to be fighting these battles, probably. john: this isn't the first time he brought it up. he raised the issue of her getting a frases the media, this after the democratic national committee emails were released, he raised the issue of a double standard, he said most people would lose their jobs over the language used, listen to this. >> the e-mail situation, i call it the double e-mail situation. both very serious.
8:28 am
if i would have used language like they used about religion, about race, about everything else that they discuss in those emails, i would have had run and hide and probably drop out of the race. with her, everything is just fine. john: he also said in the first clip we played that most people get it. do you think that's the case? >> i think it's absolutely true. in fact, it's not just how they are covering this race but it's decade's long history of unfair coverage for republican candidates. i remember when mitt romney was running, what about your gas, people are so fed up with this one-sided coverage they no longer pay attention to what the med assay. ap poll that showed -- ap wrote about a poll showing that only 6% of the public even trusts the media. that's worst than almost any
8:29 am
other profession out there and so the more they cry wolf the less people pay attention to them. it's also true that donald trump has given the media a lot of ammunition to go after him and talks to the media all of the time unlike hillary clinton that's about to have news conference in 275 days. john: yeah. first time seats available on the plane, much larger plane and can take the press core with her, so she came to the back of the plane where the press sits and took some hard-hitting questions. i want to play a couple of them for you. >> no, really, i will come back to talk to you formally but i want to welcome you to the plane. >> how was your labor day weekend? >> it was really good. >> what? happy labor day. that's exactly right. >> do you have a labor day message? >> i do, you will hear it. [laughter] >> i definitely do.
8:30 am
john: she did go back later and take questions but the relationship between candidate and reporters that were covering her. >> there weren't that much tough questions when she came back to the plane. i hope the press core is eating wheaties this morning. it's not just -- the problem is hillary clinton would not give up information if her life depended on it. the media need to be really good with these questions. they need to have really hard-hitting surge call questions to get at all the problems that americans have with her corruption, questions about her health, questions about -- again the more important policy issues of the race and they have had a lot of time to prepare for handling clinton so i hope they do a good job. >> bill who is an editorial writer for the wall street journal wrote something today that caught my eye, it was all about the e-mail scandal which, you know, people have heard about but he said, mrs. clinton
8:31 am
says officials at state, the state department never told her what she was going wasn't allowed. that isn't quite true. it's more accurate she never asked the the people who would have the answer to these questions. the ig report and inspector general report that it was made clear that she did not want the questions asked, it gets worse even today, her former department is resisting efforts to make public the emails she tried to hide. final thoughts, molly. >> widespread corruption. the media has been disinterested in that corruption. he pointed out all the problems with the irs, the department of justice and the media need to be much tougher when going against a powerful federal administration. they should treat it like they treat it when a republican is in office. there are a lot of problems that occurred over the last eight years and our media have not been hitting hard enough on that and digging deep and finding answers and it's about time they started. john: molly, senior editor of

8:36 am
saw a clown trying to lure kids into the woods with treats this past weekend. clown sighting first start add cross the border in south carolina on august 19th, a boy in greenville said he saw clowns whispering in the woods nearby. two days later police officers got called to an apartment complex after residents there reported seeing a clown trying to lure kids to follow him or maybe her into the woods. the next day on august 22nd, police received two more calls about clown sightings within an hour of each other. even for sightings on august 23rd when a young girl saw a clown in a wooded area. the same day resident reported seeing a clown in the laundry mat. on august 31st, a child reported
8:37 am
seeing a clown near middle school. now, police have not recovered any evidence at any of these locations, but they're doing extra patrols and say they are still investigating. joining us now sarah, reporter for fox affiliate. she has been covering the bizarre story. did i miss anything, sarah? >> there has been another clown sighting in our area, this one in the greensbrogh area. as far as we know right now there was another clown sighting this one also in wooded area near apartment complex by greensborough and people wonder
8:38 am
if this is kind of a hoax and they are not showing any sign ifs this is a hoax or not, they are investigating thoroughly. police are increasing patrols in the area where the clown was sighted allegedly trying to lure kids into the woods. certainly, this is what everyone is talking about here. john: we have the map showing where the sightings are occurring. so far no hard evidence that any of the so-called clowns actually exist, right? >> exactly. that first sighting to have clown was sunday night around 8:30 p.m. and police got a call that two kids had been -- had seen a clown that was trying to lure them into the wodz using treats, so an adult did hear the clown apparently as soon as police arrived, they say there was nothing for them to find as far as any clown goes and that it wasn't until four hours later
8:39 am
they got another report of a clown sighting and that one was about 2 miles away from the first sighting and again they got there, they showed up and couldn't find anything. john: i know in greenville the chief of police is quoted saying that the clowning around has to stop. they are taking this seriously but police can want be everywhere and if there is somebody trying to lure kids into the woods u they haven't located that person, haven't put them in handcuffs yet. >> exactly. a good reminder for parents everywhere to go out and talk to kids about this. we don't want to insight more fear, confusion, at this point we don't have any reason to believe this is a hoax so it may be one of those things rather safe than sorry and talk to your kids and let them know this has been an issue and 30 miles away and definitely a concern for parents. john: there is apparently a film being released talking about
8:40 am
being kidnapped and speculation that this might all be party of some viral marketing campaign, have you had the chance or is there any indication that that's what's going on in here? >> police have not made any comment on that. all i can say they are taking this very seriously specially after what's been happening in south carolina and even for people here, you know, south carolina greenville area is about 200 miles away but still for a lot of people that felt way too close and now that it's been happening now three times now in our own backyards people are taking seriously. there are questions, wondering if this is a hoax but people not wanting to take that chance and wanting to take this very seriously. john: let's hope that's not children's imaginations run wild but it's very strange that it's happening in so many cities
8:41 am
hundreds of miles apart. sarah, if there's more information, get back to us, thank you. >> thank you. jenna: new information about common disorder among kids, adhd and impact them as adults. are too many kids getting diagnosed? lost in space no more. a space lander crashed onto a comet, it's now, well, you'll see, we will tell you after the break better buckle up.

john: european space agency has located lander nearly two years after it ghost lost in space. remember this, the lander crashed into a comet shortly
8:45 am
after launching from the rosetta space probe. it was supposed to anchor itself to the surface but there was a malfunction, the agency couldn't pin down the exact location until now when cameras from the orbiting probe captured pictures of it wedged into a crack in a deep shadow. rosetta launched in 2004. now the agency plans to send rosetta itself to join the lander and crash it into the comet. jenna: brand new research to attention deficit disorder, adhd, grown-ups with adhd are prone to bing eating or alcoholism, that's one of the news today. that study raises interesting questions about the diagnosis of adhd for all of us, but specifically for children. the author of a new book suggest that american children are being
8:46 am
misdiagnosis and mismedicated. nice to have you, alan. overdiagnosed, overmedicated. you like the term misdiagnosed and mismedicated, why is that? >> it focuses on the individual children who are being examined and considered and rather focus on population of kid which is an important consideration, what i'm trying to do is have people focus on here is a kid in front of us who is having problems, no doubt, okay, should he or she be diagnosed with adhd or are there other problems going on or are there other forces acting upon the consideration of this diagnosis. again again jenna: there's a lot of discussion about ahdhd. why were you interested in investigating this? >> i was an investigative reporter at "the new york times" and i had for about five years
8:47 am
been at the forefront of the investigation into football and sports concussions and i really focused on that for a long time. i felt like the job hasn't been done and i had heard that kids in my native we were snorting for academic pressure, i discover that had the diagnosis of adhd was being mishandled so badly, the data showed such a bad scenario. jenna: tell us about the data. what does the data show us? >> 15% of american children get diagnosed with adhd during their childhoods, 11% right now and by the time they turn 18, 15%, 20% of american boys, one in five and 30%, almost one in three
8:48 am
boys in some southern states get diagnosed what is generally called a life-time potentially devastating brain disorder and it simply can't be that prevalent. there are other forces work to go make this diagnosis. jenna: you're a parent. he's two year's old, you can see as they start to grow up how different whether in schools or family members want to label your child, and so if a parent had a child in school and the teacher says, hey, i think there's something going on with your kid, they should be tested for adhd. >> i think you've it on it perfectly. first of all, it's illegal for the teacher to utter the word adhd because she or he would not be a medical professional.
8:49 am
you can't do that anymore. the point is that there's no question the child is struggling in some ways and in some way that is they notice and in some ways the teachers or grown-ups notice and they should be evaluated for whether it's anxiety, whether it's bullying at school, there are a lot of reasons that kids have trouble focusing or hyperactive or impulsive beyond attention deficit hyperat this-- hyperactivity disorder. is it real or is it made up? okay, is it a real disorder or are we medicalizing childhood? let's put that aside for the moment and focus on whatever it is, whatever the diagnosis may represent it's not in 15% of children and 20% of boys.
8:50 am
we need to be a lot more careful and it's the responsibility of doctors, they're the ones with the prescription pads. big pharma has influence but they don't prescribe, doctors need to pay for attention whether they're pediatricians, whoever they may be, they need to realize that all the coughs are not bronchitis and all the cause is not adhd, some of it may be. that's great. i'm not going to argue against it but it ain't 15% of kids and 20% of boys. >> that is a shocking statistic. i'm glad we ended it there. medication being a part of so many lives. congratulationscongratulations with book. we look forward reading it. >> thank you very much. john: it has happened again a computer glitch hits another major airline leaving passengers
