has been dogging trump the most, his praise of russian president putin. saying his comments were not an endorsement of putin but an indictment of president obama. >> donald trump and i said the small and bullying president of russia was a strong leader on the world stage. that wasn't an endorsement of vladimir putin. that was an indictment of the weak and feckless leadership of this president and your running mate. >> as for trump, he spent the day in st. louis attending the funeral of conservative icon phyllis shapley. deplorables is one of the top trends on twitter. saying clinton just made the worst mistake of the entire political season and that for the first time in a long time her true feelings came out showing bigotry and hatred for millions of americas.

how can she be president of our country when she has such contempt and disdain for so many great americans. at the same type, many of trump's surrogates are now coming out and saying this is clinton's 47% moment, a reference to what mitt romney said in 2012, remember, he said that no matter what, 47% of american voters will not be voting for him because they are too reliant or depend on government handouts. a lot of people inside the trump campaign believe or at least are hoping that clinton's comment will be just as damaging. arthel. >> okay, we'll keep an eye on it. thank you. >> on the democratic side, hillary clinton walking back some of those comments, about donald trump supporters, that has a lot of those supporters hopping mad. mrs. clinton saying half of mr. trump's support could be grouped in that, quote, basket deplorable. there she is on camera. this happened during a fund-raiser last night. in the wake of the firestorm, what she said there, mrs. clinton is now saying she

regrets some of what she said. more details on that. >> hillary clinton issued the following, walking back, can't necessarily call it a full-blown apology, after she said half of trump supporters belong in a quote, basket of deplorables. last night i was grossly general ralistic and that's never a good idea. i regret saying half, that was wrong. i won't stop calling out bigotry and racist rhetoric in this campaign. as i said, many of trump's supporters are hard-working americans who just don't feel like the economy or our political system are working for them. clinton made the controversial comments at a fund-raising event here in new york city last night. she said half of trump supporters legitimately feel like the government and the economy have left them down and they're desperate for change. but listen to how she describes the other half of trump

govern. important to note, this isn't the first time she's referenced some trump supporters as the deplore be deplorab deplorables. politico reports she's been saying this line behind closed doors for weeks. erik. >> all right, bring byabryan, w how the trump supporters react. a breakthrough in the search for peace in syria it the u.s. and russia reaching a cease-fire deal after marathon negotiations in geneva between secretary of state john kerry and his russian counterpart. now, it comes amid reports of deadly air strikes around the city of aleppo that syrian opposition activists say killed at least 45 people. the cease-fire is supposed to take effect tomorrow night but after all this, the question is, will it hold. the plan also calls for the u.s. and russia to cooperate in the fight against isis as well as al qaeda's affiliate in syria.

mean wwhilemeanwhile, north slamming the u.s. for its criticism of its latest nuclear test. that has caused the united nations security council to begin immediately working on new sanctions. you just saw u.n. ambassador samantha power there. state media accuses of us, quote, nuclear blackmail against their nation. we will talk to an international security expert about these calculating threat from the regime and those intercontinental missiles, the development that some experts contend could actually, in a few years, hit most of our country. >> meanwhile, a surprise victory for a native american tribe protesting a pipeline project in north dakota. the tribe claiming the pipeline would pass through sacred tribal sites and pollute water. the federal government saying just minutes later that it would

voluntarily stop work on part of the pipeline. will carr is live from our los angeles bureau. where do things stand? >> arthel, that surprise victory caught everybody off guard including the tribe who called it a game changer. everything played out on friday afternoon when a federal judge ruled that the controversial project could move forward but then the army and the departments of justice and the interior suspended construction on part of the pipeline while they reconsider the project. the tribe says its voice has been heard after thousands showed up to protest. just last week, protesters clashed with construction crews and private security. we have audio of that interaction caught on a cell phone video. take a listen.

doctrine used to be with television stations. it was never enforced but it still cast a pall over everything so nervous program directors didn't use to cover controversial issues. the same here, there's some pastors who won't discuss politics just because they're 1 in 1,000 chance the irs will knock on their door. >> they rarely, rarely audit -- >> but you're still scared of them. >> oh, of course. why is it a hot button? >> this is precisely tailored to his audience. this is something they care about but it's not real known to the general public so it's a perfect issue to appeal to them. >> will it work? >> i think evangelical voters are the surprise thing among donald trump supporters. this is a guy from new york who admitted many socially liberal views for many years including on abortion, changed his mind, and what's really working for him, is in that audience, redemption is a big deal.

they've obviously decided that donald trump has redeemed himself on these issues. >> he also spoke about school choice to that audience. let's listen. >> school choice is at the center of the civil rights agenda. and my goal is to provide every single inner city child in america that is trapped in a failing government school the freedom to attend the school of their choice. competition. the schools will get better and better and better. >> civil rights issue. so who is mr. trump talking to here? >> well, he's trying to appeal to minority parents. he'll trying to appeal to white suburbanites who is worried donald trump makes them uncomfortable that he doesn't have a lot of minority supporters at his rallies. this is an attempt to paint himself more moderate, more all encompassing diversity tones. >> once again, people will point out the venue.

probably wouldn't have much diversity in that audience. >> he did the same thing in detroit though. to be fair, i think this is an issue where hillary clinton is vulnerable. hillary clinton frankly is in the pocket of the teachers unions. they don't like school choice. he's talking about it in a lot of terms people agree with. we fought to have the right to vote. we now have the right to have a good school, even if you don't live in the right zip code. >> we are in the 59-day homestretch. hold on. >> i'm tired, i'm tired. >> we still have time to go. of course this is an effort for donald trump to broaden his base. to get as many voters as he can. can he get this done in 59 days? >> i don't think he's broadening his base so much as i think he has to go to republicans, independents, who don't like hillary clinton and say i'm an acceptable choice. i'm not the kind of, you know, mad guy that you see on

the u.s. and russia hammering out a deal that could bring an end to the syria civil war. secretary of state john kerry and his russian counterpart reaching agreement that would allow military coordination between the two countries. it also calls for a nationwide truce. but within hours of that deal, at least 45 people from intense air strikes were killed on rebel held parts of aleppo. john huddy has more from our

middle east bureau. >> it's been called a possible breakthrough. a new cease-fire agreement to stop the vicious and brutal fighting in syria. it may come down to once again whether or not syria's government and opposition forces are willing to hold their fire. that said, secretary of state john kerry and russian foreign minister sergey lavrov announced the agreement early saturday. it will begin with a cease-fire to start at sundown monday. >> this requires halting all attacks including aerial bombardments. it requires uninpeted and sustained access to all of the besieged and the hard to reach areas, including aleppo.

north korea's latest nuclear test being condemned at the united nations and the world capitals. the nation claims it can make warheads small enough to fit on an intercontinental missile. even china publicly denouncing the latest explosion. but so far, there are no signs kim jong-un's regime will stop. how can we deter a nuclear north? joining us now is jim walsh, international security expert with m.i.t. security studies program. jim, calls for new sanctions, tighter sanctions, but the sanctions so far in the oil for food deals, you know, they've done zippo to stop their

program. >> i agree with that, erik. in this report we put out that "the wall street journal" highlighted, in some cases, the sanctions actually improve their, ironically, counterintuitively, improved their ability to procure wmd. what a difference a week makes. you and i spoke a week ago, you know, exactly at this time and now -- and we talked about the prospect of a test and now we have a test. >> you point out "the wall street journal" report, they say in the report today that, you know, there's a big huge gaping china loophole because they're not stopping all that trade with in north korea and if they just pull the plug on that, they can cut this stuff off now. >> in today's "wall street journal," they reference for example cutting off oil supplies. china isn't going to do that. it's not going to do that out of self-interest because as much as it hates north korea's nuclear weapons, it fears the prospect

of a collapsed north korea, a failed nuclear weapon state on its border, even more. we're going to practice that, we have to be smart about it. i think we have to get china and the u.s. on the same page where there's common interest. where is there common interest? going after the private chinese businesses that are helping north korea acquire nuclear missile technology. not necessarily causing the collapse of north korea by cutting off oil but going after those middle men who help them procure nuclear technology. the test is obviously bad news. if there's any good news it creates a moment where maybe we can get a reset here. >> let's hope there can be some reset because you got the experts saying within four years, byear s years, by the year 2020, there will be a nuclear missile armed warhead on a north korea missile

that can hit chicago, washington, d.c. they say there's going to be 100 warheads. this comes from the pentagon. that predicts that north korea can hit most of the united states. they have this smaller musadon missile that is on a launch ramp that they can hide that are harder for us to launch our missiles to blow them up before they leave the launch pad. >> yeah, a mobile launcher. >> so what dough wiwe do about ? >> i have a different estimate. i think it's going to take longer to build an intercontinental ballistic missile which is what we're talking about, but make no mistake, erik, you know, in the near term we have 20,000 u.s. forces, american, in south korea south kor and we have thousands of american forces in japan, and those folks are at risk right now, so if this isn't something that are four or eight years down the road, it's a thing we have to deal with right away. i'm just worried about our american servicemen in japan as

the days of dope discounts could be in the rearview mirror. retailers are looking for a way to cash in on better economic times. that could be weaning customers off of the coveted deals. mickey, good to see you. >> good afternoon. >> we know retailers are doing this to improve their bottom line and how are they going to make this happen? >> it is going to be difficult to get the american shopper to come back in the stores once they don't have big sales anymore. we got addicted to the sales since the great recession. and of course, they had small margins because of the sales and now they are going to have to get people to stop that mind set of missing the labor day sale, i will wait for the post labor day sale.

to year comparisons on total sales. there will be lower sales tax revenue and lower production line profits that are generated for everyone in the retail sales. it is also temporary and amazon is nipping at these guy's heel and they will have to discount the merchandise. i predict the big sales will be back in short periods. >> quickly tell us how it is working for the higher end stores. investors have for years concentrated on total sales for retailers and of course, a stock gets its value from the value of the profits that company generates and so with higher profit margins, investors are happy with that. and higher end stores will
