hello. it's 5:00 in new york city. this is the five. hillary clinton camp accused donald trump of pushing deranged conspiracy theories of his opponent's health. they may be forced to change that. clinton is recovering after appearing to collapse while departing new york's 9/11 memorial ceremony. her team initially said the democratic nominee overheated. they finally came clean that a doctor had given her an ammonia diagnosis two days before. clinton ally david axlerod said

it was not good to keep that. her camp is expressing regret today. >> we could have provided more information more quickly. as soon as they got into the vehicle, she was alert the whole time and was telling staff that she was fine. i do think that in those 90 minutes that elapsed, we could have gotten more information out more quickly. that's on us. we regret that. >> did she ever actually lose consciousness? >> no, i don't think so. >> debatable. we will decide. we have a table of doctors here. just kidding. what did you think from a communications perspective? you have axlerod going on the offensive saying people who are not necessarily supporting hillary are thinking the same thing, why are you making more trouble for yourself? >> the interesting thing about him saying that is that when he

was working with barak obama and they were challenging hillary clinton in the pry haimary in 2 they knew their opponent very well. he knows her team has this desire -- i think it comes from the top -- to try to keep everything very quiet. i had walking pneumonia two years ago on the show. if you remember, i coughed for six weeks. greg said, i don't think that's just a cough. sure enough. >> it seemed like ebola at the time. >> it was horrible. i felt okay. >> i saved your life. >> when he says it antibiotics can take care of pneumonia, not if it's viral. >> you can split this in different ways. go on webmd and try to figure it out. it wouldn't have been that big a deal for her team to come out friday night and say, she has been diagnosed with walking pneumonia or whatever it is. that would have explained things. they made it worse. they're good at that.

back now to the questions swirls about hillary clinton's health. her campaign said she overheated while attending a 9/11 memorial. later admitted she had been diagnosed days before with pneumonia. jennifer griffin is outside her home. i'm sure you have been beseeieg with questions from people asking you what's the latest. now it's our turn. what's the latest? >> reporter: well, the latest is that we're told by her aides she's at home resting and that she's feeling better today. remember, she started the course of antibiotics friday. so those antibiotics should be working at this point. her doctor issued a statement last night that i really did a double take when i read. her doctor wrote that she had diagnosed her friday with pneumonia. when i first read that i thought that she had perhaps diagnosed her when she saw her after the incident yesterday. but in fact, it was on friday. of course, nobody from the

campaign shared that with any of the traveling press. in fact, what was also worrisome -- you have talked about it -- is that the protective pool who was with her at 9/11, they were held for about $90 minut9 0 minutes. they didn't know where they were. they didn't know other than when our producer who had heard from rick leventhal that she left and stumbled to the car and had had some sort of medical incident, that protective pool was kept in the dark. today the campaign has said that they could have handled things better and they have apologized. >> kimberly is next. >> everyone wants to know what is the true story here in terms of any chronic illnesses she has, any kind of precursors to this. there's been records of deep ve thrombos thrombosis, clotting disorders. then, of course, a concussion years priors.

when are we going to get the real firm answer on this in the pressure is for them to release in more records. >> reporter: well, her spokesman was on the air today. he said that there is no undiscuss closed undisclosed condition other than pneumonia. she had a long-term coughing fit. we saw that. it was the result of allergies. it developed into fpneumonia. i heard from sources just a little while ago that there are top aides who have had some sort of bug, so serious that they have ended up several of them in the hospital in recent weeks. there's something going around campaign headquarters. a spokesman tells me that's not what happened to hillary clinton. they're not linking that bug. some of the campaign aides have been on the plane with us. i think the reason we know about the deep vein thrombosis and the

concussion is because she released some of her medical records. she's under pressure to release more. we understand from her spokesman that she will do so sometime in the coming weeks. >> we want to get everyone in here. keep it pretty pithy. >> jennifer, obviously, mrs. clinton was advised not to travel out to california. is she doing the fund-raisers by skype? is she cancelling them all together? >> reporter: no. they are not cancelling them. we learned bill clinton will fly out to los angeles. he will be at those two fund-raisers hosted by lionel richie and barry diller. she will call in by teleconference we're told tonight to the san francisco fund-raiser. she will not be flying. she will not be flying out to las vegas wednesday when she was supposed to give a speech, either. >> eric? >> jennifer, when stuff doesn't add up, usually it doesn't add up for a reason. here is the question i have. the campaign and hillary clinton know -- they know she has

pneumonia. on friday. they see her literally being carried into the van. they decide to go to chelsea's apartment rather than a hospital. rather than seeking immediate medical attention. there's trauma centers downtown. i know two major trauma centers down there they could have taken her to. why did they go to the apartment? number two, we didn't see bill clinton the whole weekend. why is that? >> reporter: bill clinton was here here today. in terms of why they went to chelsea's parnapartment, i don' know. i asked whether she went to the hospital on friday to get a chest x-ray. i have not gotten any response. it's clear that they were concerned about optics. after 90 minutes she walked out of the -- clhelsea's apartment. she looked good for someone who had the incident we have seen 90 minutes. she walked on her own. she didn't seem to be having trouble walking. i don't know why they didn't

take her -- they did what -- they did try do contact her doctor right away. they did get her on the phone. she also travels with a secret service agents who has medical training in addition to being on her service detail. >> does donald trump have be careful asking for transparency? it's a pre-emptive physical. it's to manage the information. does he have worry that her staff or campaign or the media could ask the same questions of him? >> reporter: salute absolutely. the public is demanding more transparency. the clinton campaign is fond of saying donald trump needs to release his medical records and his taxes. he wants her to release her e-mails as well as more of her medical information. there's mepressure to be

she divides people into baskets as though they were objects, not human beings. >> great line. that last line that he had in his speech. the thing is when hillary clinton starts to offer comments, she says, well, to just be grossly generalistic. that's a cue if you hear yourself say that, don't say whatever you are about to say. if you listen to the reaction of the crowd, she got laughs. so she's very comfortable in front of the crowd that barbara streisand was hosting, because that crowd is going to laugh at something like that. that's certainly not the hillary clinton that you saw giving a speech about the alt-right which was considered one of her best features of the campaign. for both of the candidates, who is the real person? not a good weekend for hillary clinton all around.

>> that's like saying -- this may sound racist but -- stop right there. i have a theory that this will have no affect. she's not offending anybody who will vote for her. the people that she insulted -- >> independents. >> are there some on the fence? >> there are. >> important votes out there the to get. independents is the key group that i think trump wants to get sway with. it's going to be key in battleground states as well. there's people quite frankly -- you have seen some out there where, for example, in states even like pennsylvania, they like bill clinton. they do not like hillary clinton. and have elected to go for donald trump. you can see this actually matter, especially when you see the polls tightening the way they are. now you see the battleground states mirroring the closeness of the nationwide polls. not a predictor of everything. there are trends you should pay attention to. also, keep in mind -- some of these are within 3% to 4% margin

of error. there's wiggle room there. when you are that close in a lot of these battleground states, you have to pull votes from her. perhaps you can. when you couple her comments with the problem and the doubt, the lingering doubt from everybody about her health, it may be enough to say, you know what, nobody is perfect and he has said some stuff, but he doesn't seem to be falling down on the trail. the guy does keep going. so maybe why not give him a chance? like his outreach with the minority communities and african-american communes. look what they have gotten you. >> is this comparable to -- >> i was writing that down. because we heard all weekend. it really is like that. she insulted -- let's do the math. she insulted -- he will get 60 million-plus voted. she insulted 30 million people. she insulted 25% of the

population. mit rom knt romney did the same. they saw him as tone deaf and not someone they would want to vote for. that's you where get the independents. her apology was, i wish i didn't say half. what did she mean by that? did she mean all of them? >> i can tell you, because i looked at the numbers. to me, it was important that she sharpened the focus on who trump is a couple weeks out from the debate. he is not a normal conservative. he's not a normal republican. this is a guy who according to a washington post poll is out today, 60% of the supporters are biased against minorities and women. 48% say, absolutely. 60% have an unfavorable view of muss lip lims and want to ban t contrary to our constitution. they think a third of trump's

have to worry about as much. whoever the next president is is going to need the support of all americans to figure out how do we fight this threat. the transition period will be very dicey. i think what dick cheney is saying the military option has to be on table. by taking it off the table, it weakens diplomacy. >> these guys brought down -- they killed thousands, 3,500, with box cutters. >> when you think about where we are now militarily in terms of a smaller force. we're overcommitted in so many areas. i think if you talk to anybody who works and is part of our elite special forces teams and units, they will tell you that one of the biggest problems they have right now are the rules of engagement that have hampered them and in many instances endangered their lives. that has been put forward by this administration. there's direct ties there in terms of it. you see any of the people talk about this extensively.

that's something they want to see dialed back. just that one thing alone i think is hugely problematic. you have an administration more concerned about collateral damage than they are at many points about the lives of the men and women, the soldiers on the ground. >> are we safer than we were in the last 15 years? >> absolutely. we're safer but we're never completely safe. you can never be completely safe. you know, the hard fact are that we have dhs, which didn't 15 years ago. i think the key point is not only have we killed bin laden, degraded al qaeda, beat down isis. look at financial transactions, we are a stronger country. i think it's dick cheney and the republicans who play on fear. just try to stir people up and use it as a political weapon. >> he's not in politics. >> he is in politics. >> he doesn't care about
