2:00 pm
hello. it's 5:00 in new york city. this is the five. hillary clinton camp accused donald trump of pushing deranged conspiracy theories of his opponent's health. they may be forced to change that. clinton is recovering after appearing to collapse while departing new york's 9/11 memorial ceremony. her team initially said the democratic nominee overheated. they finally came clean that a doctor had given her an ammonia diagnosis two days before. clinton ally david axlerod said
2:01 pm
it was not good to keep that. her camp is expressing regret today. >> we could have provided more information more quickly. as soon as they got into the vehicle, she was alert the whole time and was telling staff that she was fine. i do think that in those 90 minutes that elapsed, we could have gotten more information out more quickly. that's on us. we regret that. >> did she ever actually lose consciousness? >> no, i don't think so. >> debatable. we will decide. we have a table of doctors here. just kidding. what did you think from a communications perspective? you have axlerod going on the offensive saying people who are not necessarily supporting hillary are thinking the same thing, why are you making more trouble for yourself? >> the interesting thing about him saying that is that when he
2:02 pm
was working with barak obama and they were challenging hillary clinton in the pry haimary in 2 they knew their opponent very well. he knows her team has this desire -- i think it comes from the top -- to try to keep everything very quiet. i had walking pneumonia two years ago on the show. if you remember, i coughed for six weeks. greg said, i don't think that's just a cough. sure enough. >> it seemed like ebola at the time. >> it was horrible. i felt okay. >> i saved your life. >> when he says it antibiotics can take care of pneumonia, not if it's viral. >> you can split this in different ways. go on webmd and try to figure it out. it wouldn't have been that big a deal for her team to come out friday night and say, she has been diagnosed with walking pneumonia or whatever it is. that would have explained things. they made it worse. they're good at that.
2:03 pm
>> it could -- if they had done it friday, they could have used that to explain the basket of deplorable. that's because she had pneumonia. they could have married it together. she's good at hiding an illness. she knows how to keep a secret if the secret is hers. i look at this -- i brought this here. i have -- i know i'm not the first person to notice this. but it's like this way to the hospital. i know other people have seen this. it's like a weird symbol that i think maybe they should change it. maybe it should -- no, no, no. hillary on the rise. that's much better. it's strange. the other thing -- >> strange like this show. >> the other point i want to make, what made this story? e-mail story moves slowly. but this happened because of a video. this is the way news works now. when there was a video, literally a viral video. >> who pushed the video?
2:04 pm
>> they can't fix that either. >> exactly. >> that was good. a nice opening from marcus welby, m.d. >> you claim to have saved dana's life. let's hear from dr. mcdreamy. >> let's not diagnose clinton. let's diagnose her campaign. we will look at 2005, she faints before a speech. '09 she falls and brains her elbow. 2011, falls, 2012, falls. in 2013, she needs special lens on her glasses to testify because of dizziness. february of this year, falls walking up the stairs. recently the coughing fits. >> can i add one thing? >> yeah. >> when she did her interview with the fbi, she actually said that she couldn't remember several types. you can add one more. >> i'm getting to that. we're not there yet. the coughing fit.
2:05 pm
she jokes about it being alle allergic reaction to donald trump. the campaign jokes and said -- doesn't joke anymore. the campaign covers. they say, she has had seasonal allergies even maybe even recommended she was taking antihistamine. then sunday -- dana is right, 40 type times she can't remember. sunday she blacks out. if you look at the video -- i have seen it 100 times. that right foot is dragged into the van. there's no way -- >> why would she -- >> there's no way she's conscious being brought into that van. her legs are staggering. >> here is the problem. >> 90 minutes it took the campaign to say it was overheating and then nine hours later. nine hours later they realize the video is out there. they got caught. they said, you know what? five days ago, four days ago we knew her being diagnosed with pneumonia. come on. they always revert to the lies. that's the natural reaction of the clintons and clinton campaign. i will tell you, she can't laugh
2:06 pm
it off anymore. i hope the secretary is okay. but her campaign is in free fall. she's not fit to run the country. >> what's going to happen to the polls? >> right. >> it didn't cover that. >> there you go. we heard from dr. meredith gray. you have to be mcsteam y yicste. what do you have to say? >> i may have got my cold from hillary. i was -- what is the truth? i wanted -- i thought you were building toe ining towards the . >> let's find out. >> you don't know the truth. but -- >> here is the truth. her campaign is in free fall. >> get out of town. let me say this. i think that what the real issue is the lack of transparency by the campaign. on friday, she did a lot of stuff. you saw it right here on the five. we had her meeting with the national security advisors. then she has a press conference. then she went on and did an
2:07 pm
interview with cnn. she was doing a lot of stuff even as she had -- we know people working through a cold. i can tell you i was doing that friday. >> you said it was allergy. >> i don't know what it was. i went home and i was taking claritin. i was asking dr. greg for advise. the reality is that she and her staff i think reacting to people like rudy giuliani saying, she has a concussion. or she's got low stamina. she can't do it. they were overly protective to the point of being stupid. then not telling anybody that the woman is sick. everybody gets sick. we're human. now it comes into, it's a serious issue because the people who are the birthers and the -- all those people with all their craziness, look at that video, hillary clinton, i don't know if she was out. she looked disabled. >> this is what i don't understand. you are running for president. you must have the best physician outside of barak obama.
2:08 pm
you must have the best person there who can tell you exactly what to do. it blows my mind how sloppy they treated this. >> you don't know. the doctor maybe said why don't you take a few days off. she said, i can't. it's the 9/11 memorial. >> she didn't want her -- the skeptics to be proven correct. by doing so, she proved them correct. by going and fulfilling -- she showed them that she's not well. it's interesting to watch the media. bend over backwards for this. msnbc, it was all about the humidity. how hot it was. how could she wear that jacket in that heat? then all of a sudden it was like how brave she had pneumonia and shefrs o she was out there. >> the most breeze we had here in new york in a long time. it was quite refreshing. >> here is the problem with this. the campaign can none of them just say, no, second, we need to co come clean? they knew friday at the latest.
2:09 pm
she was diagnosed earlier in the week. they knew friday that she had pneumonia from a few days prior. i would love to see if we can get an x-ray. we can see pneumonia. they know friday. >> i think we have dr. mcstuffens here. >> they try to hide. they hold reporters back. she has an episode. at that point they should have said, we need to come clean. she has pneumonia. they wait -- they say it was overheated. then they say nine hours later, guess what, it was -- we knew about it on friday. they are always willing to lie. >> what if it's not pneumonia? >> that would be a lie. >> you don't -- who do you trust? >> let me just say something. >> cable news. >> i think that dana was picking up on a moment ago. there are a lot of politicians -- i don't understand how they do it. the guys and women go on and on. they work crazy hours. i get tired covering them. if you are on a -- if you are in
2:10 pm
the press pool, you are in trouble. there was no press pool with her. >> i know. you probably got sick from making -- that's exhausting. >> i'm saying, seriously, i don't understand how they do it sometimes. they have think that it's a badge of courage if you are -- you got a cold, work through it. your stomach is upset, work through it. eat the chicken dinner. >> perhaps they should be worried about her health. are democrats worried? i don't know. maybe. it appears according to two journalists here is cokie roberts. >> the fact that it comes when polls are tightening and democrats are saying that hillary was the only candidate who could not beat trump and it's taking her off of the campaign trail, cancelling her trip to california today, it has them very nervously beginning to whisper about trying to having her step aside and finding another candidate. i think it's unlikely to be a real thing.
2:11 pm
i'm sure it's an overreaction of an already skittish party. >> interesting. a lot in there. david tweeted this from democratic operatives. expect emergency dnc meeting to consider a replacement. >> i was -- >> you are -- >> i would not be surprised. it could just be pneumonia. there's a lot of things going on that we don't know about. i think you have to consider joe biden. >> just pneumonia? 57,000 people in america -- >> if you are 69 with it. >> 57,000 people die from pneumonia. that's why it matters. it's not just just pneumonia. it could kill her. >> a lot of people get over pneumon pneumonia. >> a lot of people who are sick and whose immune systems get pneumonia and they die. ordinary people get sick. >> i'm just suggesting that not many ordinary people have this much instances of falling year after year after year.

back now to the questions swirls about hillary clinton's health. her campaign said she overheated while attending a 9/11 memorial. later admitted she had been diagnosed days before with pneumonia. jennifer griffin is outside her home. i'm sure you have been beseeieg with questions from people asking you what's the latest. now it's our turn. what's the latest? >> reporter: well, the latest is that we're told by her aides she's at home resting and that she's feeling better today. remember, she started the course of antibiotics friday. so those antibiotics should be working at this point. her doctor issued a statement last night that i really did a double take when i read. her doctor wrote that she had diagnosed her friday with pneumonia. when i first read that i thought that she had perhaps diagnosed her when she saw her after the incident yesterday. but in fact, it was on friday. of course, nobody from the
2:19 pm
campaign shared that with any of the traveling press. in fact, what was also worrisome -- you have talked about it -- is that the protective pool who was with her at 9/11, they were held for about $90 minut9 0 minutes. they didn't know where they were. they didn't know other than when our producer who had heard from rick leventhal that she left and stumbled to the car and had had some sort of medical incident, that protective pool was kept in the dark. today the campaign has said that they could have handled things better and they have apologized. >> kimberly is next. >> everyone wants to know what is the true story here in terms of any chronic illnesses she has, any kind of precursors to this. there's been records of deep ve thrombos thrombosis, clotting disorders. then, of course, a concussion years priors.
