planks of celebrities as the cameras rolled. today donald trump punched the media and we learned eight not as fun when you're the victim. here's what happened. donald trump's campaign announced he would be holding a news conference, first news conference on any matter in two months. this one on his past statements about the president from -- not being born in america, statements not true. instant stead of the news conference he did an eight, minute lifestyle commercial for his new hotel in washington, then brought out american heros to extol his greatness and said the first black president of the real estatey an america citizen and never gave a reason for his change in position, then said hillary clinton started it, which she tide not. he blamed hillary clinton for contracting the birther conspiracy theory. she did not. the comments came from that new hotel of his just blocks away from the white house.

the race for the white house getting tighter with seven weeks until election day. brand new polls show voters are still mostly split when it comes to which candidate they like. the pollinates show voters think trump would do a better job with the economy and stopping government corruption and it's a virtual tie on terrorism. voters split on who is more qualified to nominate the next supreme court justices and say clinton would do a better job of handling immigration policy and race relations.

chris wall lace joins us. any revealing in these polls, chris? >> shep, the fact they're so close on so many of these issues and also that the polls have tightened both nationally and in swing states. there was a time right after the democratic convention when hillary clinton had a solid -- not a huge but solid seven to ten-point lead in the polls and on a lot of these issues. she doesn't anymore. this race is really tightened up. >> do the polls grandfather you an indication of when and why that happened? was it this last few days of clinton absence during illness? something specific in the internals there? >> not so much that but certainly in timing. it proceeds these last few days and the whole pneumonia incident. i think there are two issues. then trump positive side over the last month since he got the new campaign team he has been a better candidate. i don't know if he is listening to them or simply saw the polls

and realized he would lose if the didn't clean up his act. but has been more disciplined. sticks more to the teleprompter, been more policy oriented in the last week on his child care plan -- >> who is responsibility for that? any way to know? >> i'm not inside to know. my guess is it's a combination of the new team and that we be kelly anne conway and steve ban nan and they showed in the polls you'll lose and lose big. we know trump doesn't like that. now, that's the positive side for trump. the neglectsive side for clinton is it a been just been a steady drum beat on the i'm eels, 15,000 new ones from the fbi, the cozy relationshipthe clintoe clinton state department and then of course, the health incident. less the health than the fail our of transparency. the fact she didn't come clean for a few days.

period. so that's different. and may in fact help him limit the political damage. >> it feels like there's a blowback on this, though. a lot of people who have been sitting around listening to these lies for a long time are coming forward going, what are you doing? this was never an issue. this was a made-up thing from the very beginning. it was politics and ugly politics and you heard the members of the cbc going, this is just racism at its core. that's what they said. >> well, look, it certainly has hurt him with african-americans. no question about that. you do see in the polls a number of them saying that for trump, to question the americanism of president barack obama, the first african-american president, they view it also racist and there's no question that it hurt him and there was one point when trump was at literally one percent african-american support in the polls. he has made an effort to try to
