declared in florida as hurricane matthew continues to barrel through the caribbeans. >> tens of thousands of people ordered to evacuate by this afternoon. >> jackie is live on merit island. what's the latest? >> good morning to you. mandatory evacuations here in brevard county while a lot of residents trying to protect their homes. you can see the storm shutters right behind me. we have seen these all across this neighborhood here as well as businesses trying to protect their stuff as well. we have also seen water pumps here along the street. now our area is expected to feel hurricane matthew sometime tomorrow afternoon. the category 3 storm covers an area as big as the state of texas. as the winds continue to top 120 miles per hour as it makes land fall here in the coast of florida. we can see winds as strong as 100 miles per hour.

the mandatory evacuations that will start this afternoon cocoa beach and merrit island. they started evacuating yesterday afternoon and they will continue to doing that. we have seen a long line of residents picking up sandbags. some people waiting more than 4 hours just to pick up 10 sandbags that's as much you can take per vehicle. they will be giving out more sandbags today as well. they gave out more than 10,000 sandbags just yesterday in one location. so again a lot of folks out hear preparing trying to get their batteries, generators selling out fast as well. we are under a hurricane watch right now. especially as hurricane matthew continues to head our way. back to you in new york. >> jackie orozco thank you for that update. stay safe.
