donald trump is telling the world he's not going anywhere so the kelly ayottes and others who say he should, forget about it. we're back here. fox continues. good afternoon. welcome to a special saturday edition of "america's newsroom." there are two big storms unraveling this hour. one by mother nature, another on the campaign trail. screen left, hurricane matthew making landfall near myrtle beach, south carolina only moments ago after leaving more than a million without power in florida. also, there is a firestorm surrounding the race for the white house. minutes ago, donald trump telling the "wall street journal" there is zero chance he will quit his campaign for president. this after apologizing last night at midnight on video for vulgar comments caught on camera more than a decade ago. we are seeing also the first

leaks of hillary clinton's speeches on wall street. there is plenty to cover today as we say hello to you wherefor you are. i'm bill hemmer in new york city. how you doing, martha? >> doing great, bill. good morning to you. good morning. i'm martha maccallum live at washington university in st. louis, the site of the second presidential debate which will take place tomorrow night, and it now as a backdrop for a firestorm of controversy that is brewing around this election process with some 30 days to go. this is the site. it has been the scene four times before starting in 1992. the original town hall debate happened that year as well between bill clinton and george bush. it was an interesting format. they liked it, they stuck with it and that's what we will see here tomorrow night. but we have seen an enormous amount of controversy that has brewed in the last 24 hours. donald trump said it himself in a tweet a little while ago. well, it's been an interesting

24 hours. to that effect, what kind of reaction will he bring forward? will we hear from him in a serious way before he takes that stage tomorrow night? all of that becomes some of the big questions we are going to deal with and grapple with this morning on an absolutely beautiful day, on a beautiful campus in the middle of this toss-up state of missouri. both candidates head into this debate with a lot of new baggage. hillary clinton reeling after the wikileaks published transcripts of her paid wall street speeches and the trump campaign as we have said now reeling as well after a decade-old audiotape resurfaces. mr. trump has some work to do. all of it dealing in this particular case with his treatment of women. listen. >> i'm automatically attracted to beautiful -- i just -- kissing them like a magnet. when you're a star they let you do it. you can do anything. >> whatever you want. >> grab them by the [ bleep ]. you can do anything. >> so the fallout has been swift. it has been harsh from some.

in fact, we continue to hear from numerous republicans already today, pulling endorsements, others calling for trump to drop out. mr. trump releasing a video as i mentioned around midnight last night with this message of apology. >> i have never said i'm a perfect person, nor pretended to be someone that i'm not. i have said and done things i regret and the words released today on this more than a decade old video are one of them. anyone who knows me knows these words don't reflect who i am. i said it, i was wrong, and i apologize. >> in total, that apology runs about a minute and 30 seconds. you will hear all of it eventually during our program today. first want to go to senior national correspondent john roberts live in st. louis. a lot to catch up on. what are you hearing from the trump team? let's start there. >> reporter: good afternoon to you. donald trump is making the rounds now doing a lot of interviews and he is beginning to fight back now. you mentioned the "wall street

journal." he also told "the washington post" a short time ago he will never withdraw. the correspondent robert costa who interviewed donald trump saying in a couple of tweets they are not going to make me quit, they can't make me quit, also saying i have never quit in my life, i give you my word that i am never leaving. martha mentioned this a second ago. let's put it on the screen, the tweet from donald trump. this is the first time he's taken to twitter since releasing that apology last night, saying certainly has been an interesting 24 hours, exclamation point. how did we get to this point? it was in 2005 he was doing a piece for "access hollywood" traveling in a bus with the host billy bush. the two of them were miked up. we have seen this happen before. donald trump perhaps not thinking that he was being recorded when he said among other things this. >> i moved on her and i failed. i'll admit it. >> whoa! >> i did try and [ bleep ]. she was married. i moved on her very heavily. in fact, i took her out furniture shopping. i moved on her like [ bleep ]. i couldn't get there.

and she was married. and all of a sudden, i see her, she's now got the big phony [ bleep ] and she's totally changed her look. >> the consequences of this are instantaneous and far-reaching. one of the biggest casualties this afternoon, donald trump was supposed to make a highly publicized appearance onstage in elkhorn, wisconsin with the speaker of the house, paul ryan. this was a personal favor that the rnc chairman reince priebus called in with the speaker to say we have known each other for 20 years, i need to have the picture of you and donald trump and several other candidates on the stage at the same time. this whole thing blew up yesterday with the speaker disinviting donald trump. mike pence will now take his place. the speaker of the house saying quote, ai am shocked by what i heard today. women are to be championed and revered, not objectified. a number of republicans are abandoning trump. jason chaffetz from utah tweeted out quote, i can no longer endorse donald trump for the presidency. he has since been followed by

senator mike crapo of idaho, kelly ayotte and others. jon huntsman, former governor of utah, also presidential candidate, calling for trump to drop out of the race. some of the more usual suspects also joining that chorus. senator kirk, and carly fiorina who said trump should drop out and leave the door open for mike pence to become the nominee. trump and his campaign tried to stem the bleeding and it is profuse. it is an arterial wound, there's no question about that. more from last night's apology here now. >> i have gotten to know the great people of our country and i have been humbled by the faith they have placed in me. i pledge to be a better man tomorrow and will never, ever let you down. >> reporter: one of the big questions is speaker ryan completely done with donald trump or could he maintain his support, maybe even appear with him later in the campaign before the election. he may talk about that this afternoon when he appears in elkhorn at the fallfest in

wisconsin. another thing the trump campaign is trying to do to fight back against this is of course point out the contents of the leaked e-mails regarding hillary clinton's speeches. pointing out there were ten things hillary clinton did not want the world to know about. you can expect them to hammer that hard. >> looking at that right now. when is the next public appearance for trump now? given that this wisconsin event has been scaled back? >> reporter: i think you are going to see him in a lot or at least a few interviews today. you will hear him in interviews with newspapers. there's the chance he may do some television interviews as well. he wouldn't be doing any campaign events before tomorrow night's debate. one of the big questions, of course, is will this be a question that will be asked at the debate. i would expect that you would be remiss in your duties as a moderator if you didn't bring this up. >> thank you. they are taking -- stand by in st. louis. going back to martha here. they are taking questions from actual voters tomorrow night in st. louis.

that's the town hall format. that's been established for this. >> yeah. we will talk more about that and the dynamic of that, and the impact that might have on particularly this question, when women stand up and address donald trump and ask him about these comments, that could be some of the moments that we are going to see tomorrow night. throughout this campaign you have had many pundits who predicted the end of donald trump over and over, every time he made a misstep. so far, it has not stopped him as is very clear as we get this close to the election. he responded to this latest criticism from this leak saying that he believes the clintons have done far worse. watch. >> i have said some foolish things, but there's a big difference between the words and actions of other people. bill clinton has actually abused women and hillary has bullied, attacked, shamed and intimidated his victims. we will discuss this more in the coming days. see you at the debate on sunday.

>> wow. that was about midnight last night. steve hayes joins us now, senior writer for the weekly standard, and fox news contributor. welcome. what do you make of it? >> he's right. it's been an interesting 24 hours. >> yeah. >> this feels different than the other predictions of donald trump's demise, in particular because as john said, this is an arterial wound. you are seeing senior republicans, some of them stepping out publicly, withdrawing their endorsements from trump. virtually everybody condemning. it's hard to find people who will defend donald trump or try to put his arguments in context because it can't be done. beyond that, behind the scenes, what's taking place, what took place last night and is taking place right now all over the country is members of congress, republicans, strategists, elected officials, calling one another trying to figure out what the next step is. i think you are likely to see a number of additional republicans withdraw their support, potentially some very prominent republicans pull their support

from donald trump and urge the party as a party to take a different path. >> there's a couple ways to look at this. obviously the party's concerned about the down ballot races. so perhaps they look at it and say, you know what, we're not going to win the presidency this time around, just going through their thinking, so let's try to keep the integrity of the party and save as many of the races as we can. is that where you think they are right now? >> i think there are three considerations these officials are thinking about. that's one of them. maybe the top one. the second one is what does a post-trump republican party look like? a conservative movement that embraces donald trump is a republican party that embraces donald trump after this, in addition to his comments about the judge, all the other things we talked about all along, deserve to have much credibility after this. i think that's the second consideration. i think the third one, this is for some i think the real struggle is the personal, the personal integrity. what does it say personally if you are willing to stand up and defend somebody, if you are willing to say this guy's going

on, you know, talking about basically assaulting women, boasting about cheating, potentially cheating on his third wife, four months after he made that commitment, and i'm going to go and defend him to the world and say that he needs to be the leader of the free world. >> we have had presidents before who are not choir boys, okay? we have had bill clinton. anybody who read the history of john kennedy who was charming and much loved knows that he had many, many women in his life. nobody i think is going to excuse his behavior. i just raise the question does it equate to what's needed to speak to the presidency, right. you look at the people who have been mobilized across the country who believe that he's speaking for them and perhaps he owes them the biggest apology of all because they have been going along on this ride with him. so i think we look for a moment tonight, you know. i wonder if he sits down and does something very different. he need to do something very bold, whether it's a speech or

an interview, to deal with this subject before he gets in front of that town hall tomorrow night. >> i don't think he's going to do a speech. there's a chance he may sit down for a lengthy interview about this. but you talked about john kennedy. you talked about bill clinton and of course, the gennifer flowers allegations came out. he addressed those in the "60 minutes" interview. there's a double standard here. people are shocked that donald trump would talk like this. but they have known this is donald trump for decades now. >> absolutely. >> he's only confirming something that everybody suspected about him, yet supported him anyway. here's the thing. donald trump's core supporters don't give a dang about any of this. they will excoriate you if you say this disqualifies him for the presidency. it's women voters. that's the key here. >> absolutely. let's put up the poll. we have a poll that shows where those numbers stand right now. this obviously is before what happened last night. >> it's just, it's not anything new that anybody didn't suspect he might have said. it's just the fact he said it on an open mic when you have the

audio of it. you can think people say these things behind closed doors all you want but when you have it on audio it changes the whole texture. >> you have a question for these gentlemen? >> john, i'm looking at kelly ayotte in new hampshire who just put out a statement saying she won't vote for trump, she will write in mike pence's name for the presidency. you were just talking about down ballots here. when you look at how close this senate race will be for the majority, republicans could barely lose any of these in order to maintain the majority, and now, in a lot of cases, you could see a senate split 50/50. what's the sense you get when you travel out there about whether or not they are going on the coattails of trump or if this will be an election that really features a split ticket in a way we have not seen historically? >> i think split ticket probably is the way this is going to go. there are a number of people who will appear onstage with donald

trump and for example, the attorney general of nevada is one who did the other day, but i think there are a lot of republicans who are going to run for the hills thinking if they stay with donald trump, particularly after these latest revelations, that their down ballot race will be a loser. >> we will see where we are in the story come monday morning because you will have a debate in 36 hours and how that's digested and how it's consumed by voters, we will see. john, thank you. with martha in st. louis. there's another big story. want to get to that. only moments ago, this hurricane we have been watching now for days made landfall. hurricane matthew making landfall just south of myrtle beach, south carolina. category 1 storm, slamming coastal communities. you have a lot of rain and powerful winds and the state's governor warning that the danger is very real still. >> a lot is still going on, whether it's winds or rain, we are having flooding events very similar to like what we had last year. so it is very -- it's still a very serious situation and we

are not out of the woods. i know the storm is today starting to pass certain areas but all areas still remain dangerous that we have to be cautious with. >> team fox coverage. janice dean has not left work. good afternoon to you. jonathan serrie is near charleston, which was battered all night. the storm seems to be moving past you. what did you go through last r are much better than they were last night. the rain has let up and we are still getting gusty winds. over here you can see this tarp blowing in the wind. but last night there was this constant howling wind and battering rain, lots of rain overnight, and it knocked out power just before midnight to the entire island. in fact, across the entire state of south carolina, the governor tells us that more than 400,000

customers went without power. but their main concern is not so much the winds, but the storm surge. charleston harbor experienced the storm surge of 9.29 feet overnight. that's the third highest on record and the highest it's been since hurricane hugo back in 1989. now, another concern is that the governor acknowledges that residents who were evacuated from low-lying areas are anxious to get back to their homes, but she says that's dangerous because there are still downed power lines, downed trees, debris in the roads, unsafe structure. so she is urging residents who were evacuated out of these dangerous areas not to try to return today or tomorrow. listen. >> the anxiousness is when the storm is coming, when the storm hits, you're praying and then now the frustration sets in and what i'm going to ask for you is

patience. most injuries, most fatalities occur after a storm because people attempt to move in too soon. >> reporter: so it's not over yet. back to you. >> indeed. jonathan, thank you. on the beach there in south carolina. janice dean has the track in our weather center. what's happening now? >> it made landfall. that was something we thought might never happen as this continued to scrape the coastline of florida, really for a period of 24 to 36 hours. so we do have landfall. latest advisory has it as a category 1 storm, 75 mile per hour sustained winds but we still have to get through the next six to 12 hours and with that, the potential of weak tornadoes which could cause structural damage. we did have a tornado report on morehead city but they lifted that which is good news. that's going to be ongoing throughout the afternoon. the wind gusts still in excess of tropical storm force winds all along the coast here. 51 myrtle beach, we had reports of 87 miles per hour near hilton

head. hurricane warnings still in effect for millions of folks along the coast of south carolina and north carolina and now we are talking about rainfall on saturated ground. in some cases, we could see upwards of 18 inches. that would be a disaster for this area because the ground is saturated. it cannot take any more water. flash flooding is going to be a huge concern as we go through the next couple of days. this area actually has seen way too much rain to begin with. any more is going to be a dire situation. so we will be -- >> i have seen pictures from friends in hilton head. they have four feet of standing water in that town. >> listen, this could be the worst part of the storm, believe it or not. even before when it was a category 4. this could be the legacy of this storm. >> janice, thank you. we will be back with you a bit later. janice dean in the weather center. coverage of hurricane matthew continues. martha, we have been watching this storm all week. we will continue to keep an eye on that. we are on the ground in south carolina and in florida as the storm churns up the east coast.

christian union. here is brn bernie moment durine democratic primary season. watch. >> i kind of think if you get paid a couple hundred thousand dollars for a speech, must be a great speech. i think we should release it and let the american people see what that was. >> that was back in march. she refused to release the speeches. here is one of the leaks that came out last night. apparently she said the following. if everybody's watching, all the back room discussions and the deals, you know, then people get a little nervous, to say the least. so you need both a public and a private position, end quote. what does this do to her campaign? >> i don't think it does much of anything, to be honest. i mean, i think we knew leaks were coming and at this point, there's such a swirl of information, where it's coming from, connections to russia, all of this is again, part of a very sordid campaign season where

it's a lot of hearsay and here and there. look, hillary clinton has already been labeled as an insider. she's already been labeled as institutional, as part of the, you know, the problem in terms of politics as usual. i don't think this changes anything. i think it's more of the same. >> matt, how do you react to this? at first blush you think what? >> i disagree. we have only seen 1% of the e-mails. i think voters do make up their mind, most voters make up their mind or at least of those that are gettable in the middle make up their mind at the end. i think these type of revelations will have an impact on the voters. i do think the clinton campaign has more tricks up their sleeve. they will be trying to put as much out against donald trump as possible. looks like wikileaks will do the same thing. looks like we will talk about everything except the issues that matter the most to voters. >> so far it's been that way. trump tells the "wall street journal" zero chance he will quit. he went on to say the support i'm getting is unbelievable.

matt, your reaction to the tape, "access hollywood," billy bush, et cetera? >> terrible. i got five daughters. it's terrible. my wife has been in situations where it was hard for her to be an attractive woman at the workplace. it's terrible to have these types of statements and i think for republicans, you know, you want to condemn this inexcusable talk, but by the same token, we are faced with this -- with the other reality which is if donald trump fails to win the presidency, bill clinton, two for one. they always say you get two for one with the clintons. hillary clinton gets elected, bill clinton is right back in the oval office from whence he was impeached, disbarred, kept from going to the supreme court, had to pay $1 million in fees and fines and settlements. it's an unbelievable situation. >> reaction to this? >> it makes me speechless, anyone even defending or considering the idea. what he described was sexual

assault so let's not mince words or be gray about what he was saying. and any woman who has been the recipient of unwanted sexual advances, a married woman, by the way, who he's describing, is cringing. is physically reacting to what they heard. i'm horrified. i'm saddened and i cannot even believe at this point that we are even considering putting him in office knowing what we know. to your point, bill clinton, they tried to impeach him. >> they did impeach him. >> it is a stain. it is a stain. but he is not who we are trying to elect as president. we are trying to elect the first woman president. it's not right. none of it is. but it is also not right to think that we would elect someone who we know going in talks about sexually assaulting women, talks about women the way he does and i'm sorry, it's not okay. >> it's okay. take a moment. >> sorry. >> when you both consider the

events over the next 36 hours, you will have a debate on sunday night. >> that's right. >> so matt, where do you think in 48 hours we are in this campaign? >> first, i would like to say to marjorie, there's a lot of emotion and i just want to connect to the fact that i think these statements are repugnant. i think the fact is this. when you are a candidate at a moment like this, when you are going through a crisis, it's very rare that you have a big moment immediately on top of it and here we are going to be sunday night at the second debate, and it's all in donald trump's hands. he's either going to continue to own the fact that what he said was wrong and apologize as he did last night which i thought was a really good first step and connect to voters. in the end in a democracy the voters are going to decide whether or not they want him in this big job. >> to both of you, thanks. >> thank you. >> it's going to be okay. >> thank you.

a lot going on. a lot to talk about today. we are all over it. on location in st. louis as we get ready for that big debate you guys were just talking about. st. louis at washington university in st. louis. but there's a lot to come on our other big story as well. people who are in the path of danger, hurricane matthew making landfall just a little while ago in south carolina as a powerful category 1 storm, as millions take cover and as they hope for the best. plus the state of florida beginning the long road to recovery aftermath yu cau matth widespread devastation there. and the governor warns residents do not let your guard down. >> quite a few pockets of road damaged right along the coast. we still have a lot of flooding. we still have a lot of downed trees. talking about we still have a lot of people without power.

back with this fox news alert. we are just getting word that mike pence, the vice presidential candidate, who was expected to take donald trump's place at that wisconsin rally with paul ryan, is now also not going to wisconsin. mike pence will not be going to wisconsin today. it was supposed to be a big moment for paul ryan and donald trump to stand on the stage together in this really just several days now, 30 days to the election, to sort of bond and show a united gop party and overnight in 24 hours, all that has changed. trump not going to wisconsin now and neither is mike pence. we are working on getting another comment on that from the campaign to see why that is. when we get more information, we will bring it to you. 12:34 aun down the east coast and we are still dealing with matthew. more on our top story, that hurricane making landfall in myrtle beach, south carolina as a category 1, grinding its way

up the coast. it lost some wind power but the storm surge and push of ocean water will be significant. forecasters describing the scene as serious inland flooding. this as south carolina governor nikki haley urging people in her state not to be too careful. meanwhile, millions along florida's east coast starting a long road to recovery. matthew left at least five dead in that state, we are told. close to 500 in haiti. more than a million in the dark in florida now and a staggering path of devastation in its wake. we are live in jacksonville where folks are trying to get home and it depends on the rivers, how high they are. how are things? >> reporter: just this last half hour the evacuation orders for most of the coastal areas outside jacksonville were lifted so just now, folks are getting their first chance to come back home and really assess the damage. but the good news is for most of the state, particularly many of these coastal towns, the damage

is far less than what they were expecting. you can even see right where i'm standing, this record-breaking storm surge. this is quickly starting to disappear. take a look at this video we shot just a few hours ago, standing right here. we were walking through a couple of feet of water. then look back 24 hours ago, you can see with that storm surge in the middle of hurricane matthew, that storm surge, the ocean, the waves were pounding downtown jacksonville beach area. to give you an idea of just how strong and powerful the waves were in this storm as well, take a look at jacksonville beach pier. this is what it looks like this morning after hurricane matthew. 24 hours ago, that pier was about 100 yards longer than it is now. the biggest concern now is power. more than a million folks still across the state do not have power. the governor said a short time ago it could still be a couple of days before that power is restored to everyone. the other big concern, bill, is

that they were warning this could be catastrophic, historic and in many ways, it was, but the damage is not what they were thinking it could be. lots of folks didn't evacuate. the concern is that now after this, they kind of dodged the bullet, in the future more people will decide not to evacuate as well and that could lead to much higher fatalities. >> thank you. a lot of concern for the carolinas. for that part of the story, back to martha in st. louis. >> let's get to some more on this dangerous situation in south carolina as the category 1 storm moves ashore with torrential rain, powerful winds and storm surge. more than a million people are under mandatory evacuation orders. governor nikki haley urging people to hunker down and be patient. >> now the frustration sets in and what i'm going to ask for you is patience. most injuries, most fatalities occur after a storm because

people attempt to move in too soon. do not plan on going back home today or tomorrow. it is not going to be safe for you to go in. >> she's right about that. joining me on the phone, tom dunn, hilton head island, south carolina emergency management coordinator. welcome. good to have you with us. how are you all doing there? >> we are not doing too bad, thank you. >> tell me a little about the situation. what are you seeing in terms of flooding? >> at this point, we evacuated our entire force is off the island. all of our current assets, police, fire and ems, sheriff's department, fire and ems. we evacuated to locations off island and hunkered down there. we are just beginning to push our way back to the island and get an assessment where we are. >> you haven't seen what the

damage is there. do you think a lot of people stayed or did most people evacuate? what's your sense of it? >> our sense is that a lot of people stayed. that was a concern for us and a concern pushing back. we do have some crews that have reached the island now and they are working to get the hospitals back open and get to the hospital and get the facilities back up and then begin the process of damage assessment and recovery. >> so when you get out there, what's the first thing that you do? do you start cleaning the house or is there too much water to do that? >> the first thing is to get critical facilities open and get the fire stations back so we can -- that's our first priority. then we will start running calls. >> you are breaking up a little bit. just to let people know at home. in terms of where the storm is hitting and where it continues to hit, what can you tell us

still without power. georgia governor nathan diehl urged half a million people to evacuate and had this message for the evacuees in his state. >> i know you may be anxious to get home but be cautious, be careful. don't re-enter an area until you've been given the clearance by either local authorities or state authorities. >> janice dean is tracking matthew. but we start with caroline shively live in taibbi island, georgia. how does it look? >> reporter: we can show you. this is the first look anyone is getting of this island. they have been cut off completely since yesterday. they took on 94-mile-per-hour gusts of wind. this is the rest left behind. this used to be a parking lot and a playground in the middle of this island. a hundred souls decided they could ride this one out during the storm. the mayor called them, begged

them personally, anyone whose cell phone was working, last night he said this is your last chance, get out. we need you to leave. still those folks decided to go. the firefighters, the police, the public works folks, they couldn't get in yet. some of those folks are starting to trickle in. there's an ambulance. they are going door-to-door knocking on the houses saying are you in there, are you okay? we don't know how you're doing because we haven't been able to get through. you can see some of the other damage over here. this is what some of the houses, the folks here apparently got out. they heeded the warnings and got out of town. you heard governor nathan diehl saying most of our folks have left. in chatham county alone, 75% of the people decided to go. now, the last few, they're going door-to-door, are these folks okay? did they need medical carement we were in with a row of ambulances. they'll find out in the next few hours whether these folks are

okay. >> now to janice dean who has been watching the storm for a week. what's it doing now? >> caroline shively mentioned the winds, 94 miles per hour where she is. we got wind gusts of 107 miles per hour off the coast of cape canaveral. we're still watching the storm. it's still a hurricane and it's bringing incredible amounts of rain to the carolinas, very concerned with the potential of upwards of a foot, foot and a half of rain and the tornado threats as we go through the afternoon for south carolina and north carolina. this tornado watch until 4:00 p.m. no tornado warnings, but at any given moment we can have some rotation. you may not see it coming. we've seen already reports of over eight inches of rain around the myrtle beach area. they are into a flood emergency because the rain keeps coming. a flood emergency for several of these counties all along the path of matthew.

welcome. >> tell about the circumstances of this interview. it was done at his apartment in trump tower last evening. what can you tell us? >> the washington bureau of the "wall street journal" talked with donald trump, and it was really clear that he was doubling down. the conversation did not include any additional apology by him or explanation for his remarks. he basically said there's no way i'm going to drop out, and those republican office holders who have asked him either to step down or withdrawn their endorsement of him, he called them holier than,000 and he said this is why republicans don't win presidencies because they don't tough it out. it was an unrepentant donald trump at this interview. he said he's looking for tward the debate and will bring the at stack to hillary clinton. >> he said, quote, go behind closed doors as a whollier

than thou politicians and pundits and compared to them i look like a baby. >> his remarks are that they're standing by him and they're loyal. he says he's receiving a lot of support from his existing supporters. the issue here is that he's probably not going to alienate the real core of his base. trump's effort to bring women into his camp has been seriously hurt by this. the remarks were, kind of politely you would say lewd and crass, and more negatively you might say even violent and worthy of kind of a look at whether or not this is assault. some of the language was pretty strong. given that fact, i think he's probably going to sort of run into trouble with the very group he's trying this last sort of weeks of the campaign to attract into his camp. >> he also told the journal he may make a speech tonight.

we will be watching. john, thank you. >> you bet. >> back to you, bill. matthew making landfall in south carolina, barreling toward north carolina as we speak. florida is starting the long road to recovery. you think about the hundreds of miles on the atlantic coast affected by this storm. the fury that matthew left five dead, more than a million without power in florida alone and a path of devastation in its wake. governor rick scott warning folks in his state that they are not out of the woods quite yet. here is what he said a short time ago. >> the biggest thing we can do is keep everybody safe. let's think about where we are now. we have a lot of downed power lines. don't touch them. talk to your kids, talk to your grandkids. if they're outside, do not let them get close to a power line. if there's standing water. we have standing water and downed trees, be careful. >> leland investigators is live

in daytona beach. what's happening now with the sun out here behind you. >> reporter: the sun is out and it certainly is a nice day in daytona, a nice day to clean up. as the governor pointed out, there are a lot of dangers. a number of those puddles of standing water are rectified by the downed power lines and can be deadly very, very quickly. there's a lot of other dangers. take, for example, this one gas station behind us that was destroyed by hurricane matthew. not only do you have everything here, it threw off hundreds if not thousands of pieces of sheet metal like this all with razor sharp edges. imagine driving over that. speaking of driving, most of the big roadways, a 1a and atlantic avenue field with debris, sheet metal, siding, and also a number of boards we saw with nails sticking straight out of them.

further north, 20, 30, 50 miles as you get up to st. augustine, massive flooding there. of course, the cleanup has to begin once the water recedes. one of the big dangers after these kinds of storms is the high water. people venturing out in it. people trying to get out of their homes. as we know, bill, people trying to drive through that water not realizing how deep it is and getting swept away and drowning. >> good morning down there leland, to you and the whole crew, thank you. craig fugate, administrator of the federal emergency management agency for the country, welcome. good to have you with us this morning. >> thank you. >> give us an update -- this storm looked like it was going to do more damage initially than it did perhaps. is that an accurate statement? >> well, we know it could have been much worse. we're in the recovery phase and doing assessments on those impacts. as we got further north, we saw

more storm surge. we're still dealing with an ongoing threat with heavy rainfall and flash flooding in the carolinas. as we begin to cleanup in florida, we're still in a very dangerous situation in the carolinas from heavy rainfall and flash flooding. >> give us a sense of how people are doing in south carolina and what your concerns are there. >> well, the big concern is right now heavy, heavy rain across south carolina in to north carolina. matthew is actually interacting with a cold front that was coming down. this is setting up a very significant rainfall event. we're already seeing some forecast record flooding and potentially some record flooding along rivers that have flooded previously in south carolina. so we're watching this very closely. we want local officials, people listening to local officials and the weather service. with flash flooding, there may be areas that weren't in evacuation zones that need to move to higher ground rapidly as these rivers are starting to rise rapidly.

we may look at potential of everything from failures and dam systems that we saw last year with some of the flooding. >> what is fema's biggest responsibility right now? what do people need from you guys? and what are you finding yourselves the most october paid with at this stage of the game? >> right now it's commodities and getting those out to where the states are setting that up. we're also focused very much on response and rescue operations and any supports that the states may need with current threat from matthew. as we begin the assessments and start the recovery in florida, we're very much supporting response operations further north. >> thank you, craig few gait, for what you're doing and we wish everybody well in the path of this storm and the cleanup process as well. >> thanks. donald trump says he will not go anywhere and several republicans jump ship.

drop out. trump says that won't happen. chris stirewalt, fox news digital policy editor and dana perino co-host of "the five." hello to both of you. mike pence's statement, we pray for his family and look forward to the opportunity for him to show what is in his heart when he goes before the nation tomorrow night. so then, if you're donald trump in st. louis, what would you say? >> i think there are two different things, what i might advise him to say and rumors out of the trump tower today about what they are planning to do which is -- start with the rumor first and follow up with how i would change it. they plan to go full bore after hillary clinton and bill clinton's prior infidelities and how she treated some of the women who were involved in all of that. that apparently is one of the strategies that they're talking about. maybe that's a head fake.

i think that last night's apology was not heartfelt. i don't think he really meant it. i think he only did that apology because he realized, oh, my gosh, it's really serious this time. today what he's been saying is he has tons of support. everything is good. this is just not good. and a chastened zrm who takes it on initially, answers it fully one time and says i am sorry, that is not how i want to be remembered and i promise you as president of the united states, i would never talk like that again. >> what does he say tomorrow night? >> he already telegraphed what he's going to say. this is the problem with the statement. i thought he was doing a great job in the statement right up until he said, and i'm going to attack hillary clinton's husband. you have to -- when it comes to damage control and politics, first you have to control the damage. before you can get to the pivot, before you get to the next thing, you have to first consume this -- what we like to say is

you've got to eat the frog first, if you have to eat the frog. don't have ice cream sundae first. he didn't. he tried to pivot too quickly to attack hillary clinton. what donald trump needs more than anything else is to convince married women, especially married women, suburban women, that he is okay, he has a contrite heart, that he is not some kind of a monster. the way you do that is by leveling with people and saying, i'm sorry, i made a mistake, not her husband is a rapist. >> i think it's hard for him to say he made a mistake. one of the things that's important about these leaked audios, even though i don't like talking about leaks, it shows you who you are when you think no one else is listening. that happens to hillary clinton as well. what he said is bordering on assault, you can do this to women because you're powerful, whether you're politics, celebrity or management. that's not just offensive to women. >> he sent a tweet, certainly

has been an interesting 24 hours. >> a truer tweet has never been sent. >> i think that will likely continue. now you have wikileaks do dockmentes released, how hillary clinton said you have to have a public position and a private position. what does she say tomorrow night knowing that more of this could come out. >> on the part where she says she's distanced from the middle class, she can answer that fairly well by saying, i grew up in the middle class and never forgotten it. obviously after we left the white house, we became very wealt wealthy. on the other piece about a public position and private position, this is exactly what people that don't like her or don't trust her have been worried about and complaining about for a long time. they think she says one thing in order to get their votes but cut deals with goldman sachs in the

dr. carson. >> it's coming from ed henry. i wanted to bring it to the viewers at home and get response from chris and dana as well. ben carson and donald trump spoke, according to an interview that ed henry did with ben carson, and they believe that there's more to come, that there will be other bombshells like what we heard last night. if that is the case -- they may be just trying to prepare for it and think there might be something else out there and trying to prepare the american people for it. if this is part of a waterfall that keeps coming, what's the impact? >> martha, i heard something similar today and that they believe there is more and it is worse. hue hugh it who had been fairly supportive of donald trump for a long time said today he should withdraw. the reason he gives is there's more and worse to come. >> but here is the problem, if there's more and worse to come, these republicans who are now saying donald trump should drop out, he should step aside, he

can't go anywhere. he can't get off the ballot except maybe in a handful of states. get real people, your party made a choice and you're going to live with it. >> earlier on the she you had byron york saying this could be a stampede of republicans leaving donald trump. you don't see democrats doing that to hillary clinton. elizabeth warren who probably dislikes what she said in those leaked transcripts, they're not walking away from her. some republicans are walking away from donald trump and quickly. >> i'll tell you what, you've got a lot to talk about today. >> i like the way martha says it best. >> you know what? >> you know what? looking forward to seeing you later. in the meantime, hillary clinton and donald trump will take the stage on this campus tomorrow night for a town hall where real people can stand up and ask

it's going to be interesting tomorrow night's matchup in st. louis taking a different tone than the first debate. hillary clinton and donald trump will face off in a town hall and it gives them a chance to take questions directly from undecided voters in the audience, also some from the internet. it's a more relaxed style but also a challenge for these two as well. let's bring in the co-chairman for the commission on presidential debates. very big job. nice to have you here, frank. >> nice to be here. >> it's a different feel tomorrow night. >> totally different. in fact, as you know, we've always felt that podiums act as almost walls sometimes and we like vice-presidential debate. this is different. the candidates can get up, walk around, can go up to the questions that are coming from regular citizens, and so it's a totally different dynamic. >> the fact that they can move sometimes creates some interesting personal space issues. watch this moment when al gore stepped into george bush's space.

>> it's not only what's your philosophy and what's your position on issues but can you get things done. and i believe i can. >> that's one of my personal favorites. i just love that look up and down, what are you doing, buddy. >> and the reaction of the citizens that were in the audience, they were the people who were there to question. >> they'll be able to react tonight, right? >> right. >> quiet, you don't get the feel but that makes a big difference. >> makes a very big difference. >> you also have that look on the person's face, you get the split screen, and that's something i think all americans can relate to if the look on their face says you're not answering my question. >> town hall has become time and time again the favorite debate format to the average american person. i think they like the idea that a fellow citizen is there to ask the question, although we have to spend some time with them. many of these people have never held a microphone and when we go through with them, like we will

tomorrow, they're like this. >> john mccain did a little wandering around on the stage which didn't bode too well for him. let's take a look at this. you got to figure out kind of what to do with yourself out there. >> i have read about him and he's not -- he's not -- he's a -- he's an arab. he is not -- no. >> no, ma'am, no, ma'am. he's a decent family man, citizen, that i just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues and that's what this campaign is all about. he's not. thank you. >> that's a different moment than the one that i was referring to but it's also a very important moment. john mccain handled that question very well. but awkward moments can happen in this environment as well. >> absolutely. i mean, it's going to be very, very interesting to see how both of these candidates handle what happens here. this is different. remember it used to be in the town hall meetings, it's only
