that's it from st. louis. great to be here. we'll see you back here tomorrow. matthew makes landfall in the united states as a category one hurricane. millions of americans still at risk from high winds and storm surge flooding. >> we're tracking matthew since the very beginning and will tell us where this destructive storm is headed next. janice? >> the legacy of this storm is happening right now with close to a foot of rainfall on the carolinas. we'll talk about it and the threat for tornados. stay tuned. the track of matthew is still to come. thank you for spending part of your saturday with us. i'm ed henry.
11:01 am
>> thank you so much for joining us. welcome to america's election headquarters from washington. we begin this hour with an election alert, gut check time for republicans scrambling to distance themselves from the latest donald trump bombshell with some seeven calling him to step aside. a 2005 video showing trump talk about women and their anatomy has rocked every wrung on his ladder. hillary clinton's closed door wall street speeches are embarrassing some democrats including speech experts in which she praises open borders and calls wall street executives the best to help reform the u.s. financial sector. a month away from election day, we've got team coverage on the fast-moving developments. jennifer griffin is in st. louis for tomorrow's big debate but we're going to begin with carl cameron. he is outside of trump tower in new york city. hi, carl. >> reporter: hi, elizabeth. well, that tape hit the news
11:02 am
yesterday late afternoon and it has completely consumed the campaign trail, particularly in advance of tomorrow night's big debate in st. louis. trump tower is effectively scandal central. the campaign is definitely playing defense. they expect that there may be more bombshells looming. there have been calls from members of congress, from governors, former rivals suggesting that trump should drop out of the race. he says absolutely not. there are assertions that mike pence should replace him at the top of ticket. pence hasn't commented publicly on that but insiders say he is staying on the ticket as the v.p. and all of this on a day when pence was supposed to be standing in for donald trump out in wisconsin with the house speaker, paul ryan, at wisconsin's fallfest. first trump said he wasn't going last night but pence would. then today pence announced that he's not going either and issued a statement that reads in part, quote, as a husband and a father i was offended by the words and actions described by donald trump in the 11-year-old video

11:03 am
released yesterday. i do not condone his remarks and cannot defend them. i'm grateful that he's expressed remorse and apologized to the american people. we pray for his family and look forward to the opportunity he has to show what is in his heart when he goes before the nation tomorrow night. very, very tough stuff. here's a little bit of what mr. trump put out in a statement last night on video in order to sort of put his side forth. listen. >> i've never said i'm a perfect person, nor pretended to be someone that i'm not. i've said and done things i regret, and the words released today on this more than a decade-old video are one of them. anyone who knows me knows these words don't reflect who i am. i said it. i was wrong, and i apologize. bill clinton has actually abused women and hillary has bullied, attacked, shamed and intimidated his victims. we will discuss this more in the coming days. see you at the debate on sunday.
11:04 am
>> tough stuff and the suggestion that trump is prepared to answer back with comments about bill clinton and hillary clinton and the former president's infidelity if he's challenged on this. tomorrow night is a town hall meeting in st. louis which means he'll be asked questions about the public, men and women. the moderators of course can also ask questions in such an event. it's hard to imagine that this won't be one of the first things he's asked. and for trump, the challenge could be particularly difficult if the question is asked by a woman in the audience who was offended. elizabeth, ed? >> carl cameron reporting live on a busy saturday in front of a very busy trump tower. thank you very much. >> i got a phone call from dr. ben carson, a trump surrogate. he said the candidate told him this morning he's not going anywhere, quote, he's staying in, oh, yeah, absolutely, mr. carson told me. dr. carson said democrats are worried about an enthusiasm gap and want to create doubt about
11:05 am
trump. he added, quote, they have more things, carson said, and they will drip them out. i think this morning and into this afternoon that is an interesting dimension as to what carl reported which is is there more coming out. others are going further and saying get out of the race, make way for mike pence. is there more stuff that's coming? >> which has been so fascinating. it's been a fractured g.o.p. and then now we're seeing the new fallout from a new controversy and we're seeing reaction on one side of the aisle. some lawmakers are saying you have to drop out, but other lawmakers are saying i may not support these type of comments but we need strength in numbers and need to support our candidate. fascina fascinatin fascinating. >> let's not forget team clinton has here own headaches. there's plenty of fresh ammunition heading into tomorrow night's town hall.
11:06 am
a lot happening there, jennifer. good to see you. >> reporter: good to see you, ed. the clinton campaign seized this trump's boys on the bus video tape as a gift before the debate tomorrow night. in fact, they're just trying to stay out of the way of the story line so that it keeps playing. tim kaine, her running mate, has left nevada. he said when he saw the tape last night it made him sick. >> any republican who has said they are for donald trump, they need to be asked by the press and others and by constituents right now, do you still think he's qualified to be president of the united states. do you still think he is. >> reporter: meanwhile the clinton campaign is facing some uncomfortable revelation itself after wikileaks posted online thousands of e-mails to and from campaign chairman john pa december sta showing some of the inner workings of the clinton campaign which is blaming the hack on a sophisticated russian disinformation campaign designed to throw the u.k. election.
11:07 am
quote, it should concern every american that russia is willing to engage in such hostile acts in order to help donald trump become president of the united states. the e-mails released by wikileaks contain potentially damaging excerpts from clinton's wall street speeches, showing she is actually in favor of free trade deals, the keystone xl pipeline and open borders and a single payer healthcare system. clinton's spokesman brian fallon criticized the media for playing into the hands of the russians by publishing the males. quote, striking how quickly concern of rish's undermining of the illegal haks gave way dig you through the fruits of hack. as carl mentioned, it may not be the questions from the moderators that are so tough but the questions from women in the audience to trump and then also clinton facing questions about her e-mails. back to you. >> exactly. jennifer griffin live on the
11:08 am
ground for us, the hits keep on coming. that they do. there's a lot of discussion surrounding donald trump's toxic remarks. can he redeem himself before election day? poster robert jeffers is a member of trump's safe advisory council and is sticking by the g.o.p. nominee and joins us now from our dallas bureau. sir, thank you for joining us. you've been defending donald trump from the very beginning but how do you defend the most recent audio leak that we've seen? >> let me be very clear about this. these statements were lewd, offensive, and indefensible, but they're not enough to make me vote for hillary clinton. last week i was in trump tower. i moderated a meeting between mr. trump and religious leaders. and i said with trump seated to my left, i said, look, i might not choose this man to be a sunday school teacher in my church but that's not what this election is about. it's about being the best leader to reverse the downward spiral. >> it's also about electing
11:09 am
someone with character and judgment. he mentioned comments that he's learned a lot after ten years. he was still 60 years old when these comments were made. how much growth do you do between 60 and 70 years old? has his judgment really changed since then? >> well, let me agree with you. i do think character is a very important issue when it comes to leadership. but when people suggest that trump is now disqualified because of his character, they're assuming that hillary clinton has a better character. and yet here's a woman who destroyed 33,000 e-mails. she attacked those victims of her husband's sexual assaults, and she supports the dismembering of babies through partial birth abortions. that's hardly the high moral ground. >> we are going to do entire segments about hillary clinton on this show today but right now you are speaking out on behalf of donald trump. you also lead a congregation. how do you convince those people that this man supports traditional family values when you hear comments like this?
11:10 am
>> well, first of all, i don't defend the actions or the words. i also talked about the fact that the bible teaches we are all sinners who all need christ's forgiveness. but when it comes to family values, i would just say that the issue, i think, for conservative christians in this next election is the supreme court. usa today said last friday that the next president is going to shape the supreme court and therefore shape america for generations to come. donald trump is the only candidate who said he will appoint justices who interpret the constitution using the law rather than political correctness. i just think, elizabeth, as despicable as these comments are, i really believe conservative christians need to keep their eye on what the real issue is in this campaign. >> okay, well you talk about shaping the supreme court of the united states with a number of other factors but in order to get there you need the support of your party. right now the g.o.p. is compl e
11:11 am
completely fractured, especially after these comments, and we're seeing lawmakers rescinding their support of the nominee. so how do you steer the ship from here? >> well, i think it's going to be difficult. i think mr. trump, for example in the debate tomorrow night, when he's asked about this -- and i think for sure he's going to be asked about this -- he needs to demonstrate genuine humility and contriteness for what he has done. he's got to say he was sorry. he needs to repeat what he did last night, that he is a changed person. so i think genuine humility is very important, but then i do think, after he demonstrates that, he needs to pivot to what the real issue is. and look, i'm not going to berate people who say they have trouble with supporting the ticket right now because of this, but i really do believe this is a binary choice between trump and clinton and i don't believe a vote for hillary clinton is a vote for moral character when you look at her record. >> one last question for you, pastor. you said he needs to exhibit
11:12 am
genuine humility. can he promise the american people that this was just a one off, that we can expect nothing like this again? >> you've been reporting and i think it's probably true there are other things from his past that will come out as well. but i think what he can do is say i'm ashamed of what i've said. it doesn't represent who i am, and i'm a changed person and i will never exhibit this behavior from this point on. >> pastor, thank you so much for joining us. we appreciate it. >> thank you. and as we mentioned, donald trump and hillary clinton will face off in st. louis, missouri tomorrow night for the second of three big debates. we're going to have special coverage from the debate spin room on media buzz at 11:00 a.m. eastern. here in washington we'll get insight on fox news sunday. bret baier and megyn kelly will be in the arena for the latest both before and after the showdown. don't miss tv, that's for sure. >> big-time. hurricane matthew finally
11:13 am
makes landfall on u.s. soil. some good news, it is now a category one. it just landed in south carolina with 75 miles per hour winds, spaund tornado watches for the carolin carolinas. the hurricane is being blamed for at least four u.s. deaths. utility crews are working to restore power to more than 1 million residents and more than 2 million people have evacuated florida, georgia and the carolinas. janice dean is at the fox weather center. she has did today's forecast. what are we seeing right now, janice? >> probably the worst of the storm right now is happening right now across north and south carolina where we have flood emergencies going on and incredible amounts of rain on the order of five to six inches an hour. and this is going to be devastating for them and very dangerous and potentially life threatening. so the flooding is ongoing and
11:14 am
we will continue to monitor it because we are getting epic rainfall totals within the last couple of hours. also the threat of tornados. certainly we've had a tornado watch out for the last couple of hours and will continue until at least 4:00 p.m.. we don't have any tornado warnings, but look at all of the rain that is falling right now that continues to fall over the same areas. this is the radar estimated precipitation over the last 48 hours, but much of this has just come within the last two or three hours, and that's why we have big concerns across the carolinas this evening and overnight tonight. eventually the storm is going to exit, but for now it continues to rain on top of areas where we have saturated ground that cannot take anymore rainfall, and we are predicting in some cases a foot to a foot and a half of rain. so this could be the worst part of the storm even though it is
11:15 am
just a category one. that's what happens, the dead deadliest part of these hurricanes is not the wind but the water, the surge and the flooding, and that is occurring right now. we have many millions of people under flash flood warnings or flash flood emergencies including the myrtle beach area. i am really nervous to get pictures out of myrtle beach right now. people need to go to higher ground. wind gusts still way over 50, 60 miles per hour along the coast. the storm is still hanging around. we are hopeful that within the next 12 to 24 hours it will exit the coastline, but i'm afraid the legacy of matthew is going to be the extreme flooding across the carolinas as we go through the next couple of days. back to you. >> janice dean, some sobering news right there. thanks for bringing it to us. we'll get back to you later in the hour. hurricane matthew is bringing some of the highest tides on record to south carolina.
11:16 am
the big concern is the threat of flooding from the storm surge. jonathan joining us from folly beach in north carolina. >> reporter: elizabeth, the rains have stopped where we are but you can see there are still some gusty winds and that storm surge that janice dean was talking about has been causing major problems on the main land. charleston experienced a storm surge of 9.29 feet. that's the third highest in recorded history and the largest storm surge they've experienced since hurricane hugo in 1989. now, residents understandably are anxious to get back and check on their property. those who were evacuated from low-lying areas, but governor nikki haley warned that many structures are unsafe. many of the roads have trees on them, other debris, and state-wide more than half a million customers are without power. state officials have also learned that there's been some
11:17 am
insult to injury, that people in the path of the storm have become the targets of online scammers. listen. >> we have a cyber situation that is going on in that people will start receiving e-mails and they will tell you that they have updates on outages and if you want to know the updates on outages, click here. once you click there, they get into your computer. >> so in other words, if you get one of these e-mails, you don't recognize the sender, don't click on the link, just delete it. back to you. >> jonathan, thank you so much for bringing this story. we appreciate it. early warnings and hurricane prep paid off in the u.s. but there is utter devastation in parts of haiti and other caribbean islands. a check on matthew's death toll and damage straight ahead. price gouging customers. why the makers of epipen have another scandal to contend with.

mylan, the drug company that makes the epipen, now has to pay a whopping $465 million
11:22 am
settlement to the justice department over how the drug is classified. the settlement comes about a month after mylan's chief executive was grilled at a congressional hearing over the massive price hikes since the company acquired the epipen in 2007. we're off. it's a month before election day and donald trump has been on a roll. now he stumbled. his, quote, locker room talk has a growing number of republicans demanding he step aside. the stakes could not be any higher ahead of tomorrow's town hall debate in st. louis. jim osmond, welcome this afternoon. play devil's advocate for a second. when john kasich and other establishment republicans are coming out now today and saying i'm never going to vote for donald trump, we already knew
11:23 am
that. at what point will the dam break? if kasich says i don't vote him, i don't think that breaks the dam. what is the pressure point? >> i think speaker paul ryan, if he came out and said, you know, i will not support him in any way, i think that that may be it. we're seeing hour by hour more folks coming out. we saw hugh hewitt, the congresswoman from alabama. he's very significant. the congresswoman out of alabama, red republican state, i think that the more that we see those today, this could be a totally different story by tomorrow. >> in a normal election year you would have establishment republicans coming out against a republican nominee with this force and you would say he's got to get out, but this is not a normal election year, and i wonder if the trump supporters, the blue collar workers out there who support him might dig in more when they see
11:24 am
establishment republicans in washington saying i don't like donald trump. there are people across the country who might like that. >> well, i mean, i've seen it on facebook today. people i know who are ardent trump supporters who were doubling down and saying, well, it wasn't as bad as what bill clinton said, on and on and on. i think that's it. i think his supporters weren't going anymore and it's maybe more in the middle. >> maybe that's why we're hearing donald trump saying i'm not going anywhere. we like having you on in part because of not just your insights but you bring the electoral map. you were looking very closely at the polling in these key battle grounds and the picture was not good for donald trump even before this weekend. >> it wasn't and i think you asked me why and i think one of the reasons, the hispanic vote and the women vote. the republican party in 2012 did a postmortem um and basically said we need to do better with women and hispanic and they're
11:25 am
not. this makes it all that much more worse. florida, pennsylvania, the suburbs of philadelphia, montgomery county, a lot of those women have bailed on them already. he was already 40 points difference between hillary and donald trump. you may see further erosion. there are quite a few women who are republicans and have voted republican that i think will either vote for hillary or stay home. >> i think very interesting and on top of that the most interesting statement we've gotten today is from mike pence, his running mate who says he was offended by the words. we've heard other republicans say that but the last line, quote, we pray for his family and look forward to the opportunity he has to show what is in his heart when he goes before the nation tomorrow night. my point being, what's remarkable is what mike pence does not say. he does not say i still support the man at the top of the ticket. if anything, jim, it seems like he's putting more pressure on donald trump, i want to hear
11:26 am
what he says before the american people tomorrow night. >> and do you know what that sounds like, that statement, somebody that's running for president in 2020, just like the debate the other night, right? that's the announcement of somebody that may think donald trump is going to lose and he's going to want to run in 2020. i think it puts a lot of pressure on trump tomorrow night and it makes me wonder -- there's talk about will trump drop out. has anybody asked the question will pence say see ya. >> what about what donald trump does today? mike pence putting the pressure, what will you tell the american people tomorrow night. we had dana perino on a short time ago, a former white house press secretary saying maybe he should come out and talk and then move on. >> the problem is that he cannot give an apology without making an excuse. there's a ben franklin quote, don't ruin an apology with an excuse, and that's what he's done. he cannot come out and just say, listen, i'm asking for your
11:27 am
forgiveness. there's a difference between an apology and i'm asking for your forgiveness. and i think that's what he needs to do without then saying, and by the way, i'm going to bring up bill clinton. >> there's also a saying, i can't remember who said it, but when you're in a hole, stop digging. jim, bringing a lot of great analyses and insights. >> thank you. after the break, look at this year, taking a look at writesville beach on the north carolina/south carolina border. we're waiting a briefing. and what to expect when the gloves come off and will the loser keep this promise the day after the election on november 9th. >> sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. but i certainly will support the outcome of this election. >> the answer is if she wins, i will absolutely support her. many sleep-aids have pain medicine

shortly before the break we showed you live pictures out of writesville, beach and now you're looking live at the university of north carolina. we are expecting governor pat mccrory to give an update on hurricane matthew any minute now. as you know, the storm made landfall this morning in south carolina.
11:33 am
it is creeping up the east coast and also heading east. we will bring you updates as we see the governor approach the podium. well, no shortage of news. two more october surprises. a wikileaks e-mail dump containing alleged exerpts from speeches of hillary clinton as she gave them to wall street executives appearing to promote free trade, a stance she has backed away from. but e-mails are overshadowed by donald trump controversy, a 2005 reporting of trump making lewd comments about women. the fallout has been swift and fierce with a string of rescinded endorsements an calls from g.o.p. leaders to drop out of the race. all of this just one day before the second presidential debate. here to weigh in for a fair and balanced debate, doug smith, a democratic strategic with kent strategies, and kevin share done, a republican strategist and former director for 2012
11:34 am
v.p. nominee paul ryan. gentlemen, no shortage of topics here. kevin, i want to start with you. the debate is a town hall style. it's not if these audio remarks are going to come up, it's when they come up. how does the candidate handle it, and what type of fallout could we see? >> he's got to get through the next 24 hours. >> you think he's going to come out tonight? >> at some point he'll come out in the next day. i don't know if that's with his wife, with his daughter. i think we're yet to hear from them. i think there's going to be -- >> i know this is rude. you don't do it in real life but we have to do it for television. we're going to dip in and listen to pat mccrory right now giving an update on hurricane matthew and we'll come back to the discussion. thank you guys. >> at this point in time there are deadly conditions from raleigh east at this point in time. very serious flooding, very serious winds. as a result of that, we've already had loss of life, and we don't want any more loss of life in north carolina due to this very, very serious storm, because conditions are going to
11:35 am
get worse from raleigh east and the central part of the state. we have not reached the peak yet. it will probably start slowing down around midnight. in the central part of the state, from fayetteville to raleigh across piedmont and even the greensboro area got hit with some of this hard rain, three or four inches more than anticipated. i want to warn the people on the coastal areas. i've been talking to a lot of mayors and county commissioners during the day. i believe that some of the people there, not the leaders, they clearly understand it, but some of the people go, well, it's not that bad at this point in time. what we need to clearly explain, this storm went inland, and as it curved around wilmington, much of the scattered storm went to west, to north carolina. as a result of that, there's a lot more rain, scattered rain, but very intense rain that is
11:36 am
doing some major flooding. that storm is going to move back east and back to the coast between now and midnight, and the coastal areas will get very high winds and a lot of rain and precipitation in the coastal areas. going by the outer banks, by moorehead city and again hitting almost every beach area of north carolina. so i think they assume it just went straight to them, but it's actually curved to the left and then it's coming back down again during the dead of night where they won't be able to see the very dangerous conditions on the coastal areas. so everywhere between raleigh and those coastal areas throughout the night could be extremely dangerous conditions. just here in raleigh, for example, coming from the executive residence to the operation center, there are a lot of downed trees.
11:37 am
wade avenue right now is blocked in raleigh and there are a lot of other roads being blocked at this point in time. there are already a lot of power outages. i think we have over 200,000 people with power outages right now in north carolina, and it's probably going to get a lot worse. my own house in charlotte, my wife just called and said our power is out at our house. so from charlotte west and east we're seeing some major power outages. again, as we warned earlier, this is a deadly storm, and so far in north carolina i'm sad to report that we have had three fatalities from this hurricane up to this point in time. we lost a person in samson county due to hydroplaning. very, very treacherous road conditions. we've lost two people in bladen county with a submerged vehicle.
11:38 am
and i need to wake everyone up here if you're driving from raleigh east right now. there are already conditions, even here in raleigh just a few blocks from this emergency operation center, which the roads are closed at this point in time. so we do not want you to be driving, and we have already lost two lives tragically. >> you have been listening live to governor pat mccrory in north carolina at the emergency operation center telling residents that they are not completely out of the woods, that this storm is curving left, coming back, and it's going to be hitting down in the dead of the night. he said coastal areas will get hit, specifically the outer banks and other coastal regions. he is telling folks that they are not out of the woods yet. unfortunately, three lives have already been lost in that storm and he wants everyone to stay safe as storm conditions continue. we have an e-mail address for hurricane victims who need help with support services, finding local fema centers, getting food and water and even finding

11:44 am
it. but look, before that happens, he's going to have to come out and show some campaign unity. he's going to have to show that his wife and his daughter still support his candidacy. he's going to have to demonstrate that there's some real support that continues to be behind his campaign because right now all we've seen today, this morning we saw the snowballing effect of everybody from hugh hewitt, the radio host, to five senators, members of the house, all jumping off the campaign. >> that's what i wanted to ask you, doug, is how does he portray strength and unity when he's already working with a fractured g.o.p. and now we're looking at continued fallout. as we've talked about, members on the hill have said, listen, we're going to rescind our support for you. >> i don't think he can. i think there are two significant death nells that have happened today. john kasich is pulling his support. ohio is critical for trump and for kasich to back out is terrible. politico is running a story
