when it's all about news, when is it not about donald trump? they released that videotape and the audio recording from 2005 which resulted in this incredible reaction from members of the republican party. even malania trump saying she did not like what he said but she's willing to forgive and it's time to move on. yesterday donald trump took the impression, i've been out in front of trump towers so many days and he never comes out front. yesterday he had to do some debate prep at trump towers. there he is with the secret service entourage out on fifth avenue right out on in front of trump tower. all this talk about whether or not he would drop out of the race and so many calls from so many republicans and listen to

rudy giuliani who spent the day in debate prep said about all that yesterday. >> there is nothing going to cause something to happen. that day wishful thinking of the clinton campaign. and those people who have opposed him for a long time. >> so, for most of the last couple of days donald trump has been engaged in debate prep at trump tower along with giuliani and chris christie. this was wildly seen as getting him used to the town hall format, which he hasn't done a lot of. chris christie is the master of the town hall. they thought he would be a good person to bring in. body language and how to pivot to a different answer. but all bets are off as to how this thing is going to go tonight because will the first question utoout of the box be at this recording from 2005. >> if it's not, donald trump

things about clinton that, you know, perhaps she didn't want out there in the public. talking about it's important to have two different positions. a public position and private position on things like the banks and suggesting that wall street would be best reformed by wall street insiders and that will make bernie sanders and his supporters crazy. also talking about open borders. her campaign is not confirming the authenticity of these e-mails. not denying he was hacked and this stuff was stolen. reaction to donald trump's latest controversy and reaction tonight from the latest from wikileaks about whether she's saying certain things to the banks behind closed doors. >> that's one of the things that donald trump has been practicing yesterday. yesterday they put out ten things hillary clinton didn't want to have revealed. plus, donald trump will talk about that a lot, as well. >> welcome to st. louis.

drop out? actually, no, the republican establishment that they weren't standing by the man at the top of the tick lt. >> everyone i talked to said it's repulsive what he said 11 years ago. many people are saying we need to move forward and forgive, just like john roberts was talking about. if you compare his record to hillary clinton record, four people are dead in benghazi. they were begging for help, and she didn't help. you have her lying about the e-mails and her vilifying women who came out and said her husband assaulted them. you have to decide when you go to the polls, who is better for the country? >> you have to look at that and that wit set up a pretty emotional, passionate debate tonight. the question is, what sels coming out? donald trump indicated to ben carson tonight that there are more tapes coming. from what he said on the howard stern show, especially if people don't know the howard stern

show. unlike hillary clinton, you can't give them questions. when hillary clinton goes on the steve harvey show, she says to steve harvey, this is how i want the segment to run. when you're on that show, when you're not running for president. a lot of crazy stuff came at me. i'm sure that's going to be front and for today. i think it's very interesting and conspicuous how the clinton camp has kept entirely silent. my sense is tonight they're going to open up with bazookas going after them. >> it was smart of her not to say anything yet because tonight everyone is going to be watching because they want to hear her reaction. >> yeah, you know, the big lead talking about had the donald trump had not been leaked by somebody at nbc, wikileaks dropped 2,000 of the john podeta, wikileaks says we have

50,000, here's 2,000. so far what we've seen makes hillary look pretty bad. her campaign research director a fellow by the name of tony cart who was so worried about the impact of this sent some headlines in the press that might come out. clinton admits she's out of touch. one headline. clinton says you need to have a private policy and a public policy on things. clinton remarks are pro-trade. so, what we're starting to see, this is just the beginning, this is just the tip of the iceberg, doesn't look good for her. >> she's a career politician, steve. she is saying one thing in public and one thing in private. she's grown up, learning about politics. there is a stark contrast between donald trump and hillary clinton. you have to decide what she wants. >> open borders, globalests. exactly the opposite of what she's saying.

that leaked tape of donald trump's comments was all over the networks yesterday morning. look at this. >> we have to start with donald trump. these comments, any other person could make them. it would torpedo their campaign. >> it's uncoverable. >> it sound like donald trump could very well bring down the entire gop. >> he could. >> total disbelief. not just belief that donald trump could say such a thing, but just belief that it was out there. >> that apology will not be enough because i've seen more authenticity in hostage videos. >> so, how did the coverage compare to hillary clinton's wall street transcripts and the e-mail dump by a wikileaks. what role will this play in tonight's debate? conservative talk show host and psychology expert dr. gina loudon joins us live. good morning. >> good to be here with you. what did you think of what we saw donald trump, that video of

him coming out and saying, i'm sorry. what did you think about that? >> i think that's a good start with the american people. the american people, they want to be forgiving. i also think that the american people realize that donald trump is not a career politician. this isn't what he's always done and he's been pretty forthright saying my life is entirely different, but this is something i want to do for america because zee a candidate that contrasts who is literally admitting to goldman sachs and she was talking about open borders and open trade. >> two things. >> she's admitting she's will g willingly deleavideceiving the n people. >> his life before this. really what you're saying, before he became a politician in the last year and before he went out on the road and he started meeting thousands and thousands of people, he had one point of view. are you saying he's a changed person? >> this is what i do know.

my background in psychology. i counseled people who have been through campaigns and spent most of my adult life who was a state finisher right here in missouri and campaigns are humbling. steve, it really, it's a completely refining experience. and i'm saying that i know that mr. trump has been humbled when i talk to people who say, this is a spiritual transformation for him. i think that's something for mr. trump to talk about. >> this is your department. he's already given one apology and you said that is a good first step. what should he say? what should he try to work into his answers here tonight? >> contrition. i think that's very important. i also think, though, that just being really honest who he is, who he was. what has happened to him personally on this journey. this has to be so different from anything else he's ever done. he is a real person. i think we forget that about our

good morning. welcome back to "fox & friends." some breaking news overnight. a cop killer has now been captured after a tense 12-hour standoff. police say that known gang member john felix opened fire on two police officers in palm springs, california, during a domestic disturbance callple one of those officer os is a brand-new mother to a 4-month-old baby girl and the other officer killed jose vega a 35-year veteran and father of eight. a third officer was also injured and he is recovering in the hospital, we're told this

morning. felix is now facing two counts of murdering a police officer. another fox news alert to bring you right now. matthew has just been downgraded to a post-tropical storm. heavy winds still carving a path of destruction and a stranded driver and her child were rescued. you can see it right here from a hood of a car. one of the many scenes playing out from scenes. it has killed at least ten people in the united states in its path. head over to ainsley who has a look at the politics. >> the polls showing a tight race in key battleground states. the real clear politics average showing hillary clinton leading donald trump in michigan and wisconsin. so, what does it state here? here to break it all down for us is the president scott

rasmusson. i'm going to let you do this because you're better at it. >> like fighting over the remote. we talk about this campaign and you get by all the issues and the personalities and it does come down to the college votes. >> so, if he wins all the red, that gives him a total of 206. how many does he need to win? 270. >> total of 270. he's not going to win in california or, by the way, no democrat is going to win wyoming. we're down to 13 states that people thought were battleground. these are the competitive states. again, trump needs to win north carolina, arizona and finds four more electoral college votes. the biggest of the battlegrounds. 235. and then he has to win ohio.

253 and ainsley, we can talk about this any way you want. if he doesn't win those two states, there is no chance. >> let's say he wins those two states. he still doesn't have the 270. where does he get the last one? what if he were to win michigan? 269 to 269 tie. >> could you imagine? >> i would say this is impossible, but this is a crazy year. the events of the weekend show you have no idea what is going to happen next. the house of representatives then picks the president, but they don't vote as individuals, they vote by state. the texas allegation and the iowa delegation only get one vote. probably that would lead to a republican victory. but, look, while we're talking about this. wisconsin and michigan are thought to be at the upper end of the republican hope. at this year, democratic states for a generation and democratic

by more than the national average. it's very difficult to see how donald trump wins these states, given where we are right now. there was some appeal for those lost workers or the displaced workers that we thought would help in the rust belt. but right now these states would be a real surprise for donald trump to win. so, what do you get back to? we're still in the same place. we start with 206. we win florida. you win ohio. and if he can do that, he still needs 17 electoral college votes. one possibility we'll talk about is pennsylvania. the great white whale for republican candidates for a generation. another path to iowa and nevada and new hampshire. but what we can see is if there's no major fallout from trump comments the other day, he'st in a competitive position in these two states and, just needs a little bit more. >> thank you, scott, for being

but a lot of people say the reason this is making their jump and the other problems and controversies didn't is because republicans are scared they're going to lose women forever where they never really had the majority of the hispanic vote or the african-american vote. but they always had women and now this could be fatal, they feel, with these comments. >> yeah. i mean, maybe. there are three things going on that nobody is saying. one, there have some, that's legitimate as far as i'm concerned. two, they're just flat out embarrassed of the guy. i mean, truly. and, three, they don't like him. they've wanted to do, they feel he's a threat to them and they wanted to distance them selves for a long time. actually on a political calculation what you get is legitimate. but the frame it adds. the moral and immoral is really offputting we may have different interests here.

louis to see how people viewed the police here. >> that's right. wee were out talking yesterday. there's a divide across the city and the country. my first stop was the st. louis police headquarters. i caught up with the police chief to find out how the police officers are dealing with the rise in tension. after that, we hit the streets. take a look. >> how are your relations and your department's relations with the black lives matter? >> after ferguson, we've made a conscious effort to invest in improving that dialog. i think ferguson made the law enforcement profession around the country realize how big the risk was in communities and especially the communities of color. >> are we putting the fault on the officer that revealed that

that never happened. do you feel like there's a frustration in your force from police officers that the narrative upon which this whole thing has developed is not a fact-based narrative? >> it is. it is. but i don't want to get stuck on it. what i want to get focused on is that the conversation is happening now. we had an officer involved shooting here in st. louis a week ago, a week ago sunday. i walked into a neighborhood and met with people in the neighborhood and said this is what i know right now. here are the facts. i think that helps. so we've learned as a profession, the more information we can share the more quickly it fills a void that's there. >> this is one of our cameras. these are the cameras we put out into the community. i'm a proponent of having eyes in a neighborhood or a business

in florida but first we're going to check in with rick tracking the every move. >> 2.5 million people without power and six iffatalities in t stay of north carolina. we saw almost 18 inches of rain in savannah, georgia and we have water rescues going on this morning across parts of north carolina, town of pine tops, going with helicopter putting people out of the homes because the entire town is submerged under water because of about 12 to 18 inches of rain that fell across parts of north carolina. the rivers are at record crests. it's going to take a long time for water to go down. we'll see those rivers probably cresting by tonight and tomorrow in a lot of cases. if you think you don't have flooding now, doesn't mean the river will not rise as it gets toward your area. winds are extreme, in the 40 to 50-mile-per-hour range across the shores here in coast
