mediabuzz@foxnews.com. i'll be on her after the debate. you can check me out with megyn kelly. we are back in washington next su sunday. check us out then for the latest buzz. it is high noon in new york city. it's 11:00 a.m. in st. louis, and 9 hours from now it is trump versus clinton, round 2. both candidates getting ready. hillary clinton's plane took off from new york last hour, and the controversy of the last 36 hours makes this must-see tv. hello, everyone. we're live in america's newsr m newsroom. good day to you, martha. >> we're live from washington university in st. louis, the glorious site of tonight's big debate. trump's back is again the wall. he needs a knock out, hail mary, whatever you want to call it tonight to try to get this thing
9:01 am
back on track for his campaign. how will hillary clinton use all of this against him tonight? only two people truly know the answer to question. so far neither of them is talking, bill. >> kellyanne conway, reince priebus, repochris christie all scheduled to appear this morning and they were all replaced by mayor rudy giuliani. i appeared on all five major news. >> i'm not here to defend his comments. if he were here, he wouldn't be defending his comments. his comments were wrong, they were very wrong, and reprehensible. he has said that. he's the candidate that's much better suited to run the country than hillary clinton who has her own set of flaws. >> and speaking of hillary clinton, dealing with controversy of her own from over the weekend. these leaked speeches to wall street showing a different side to the candidate. more on that in a moment. first i want to start with john
9:02 am
roberts back there live in st. louis who is following the trump team. john, let's start there. good day. >> reporter: bill, good afternoon to you. donald trump, not surprisingly, defiant in the face of calls for him to step down. yesterday outside of trump tower actually leaving trump tower, going out onto the sidewalk on fifth avenue. i have been out there on fifth avenue so many days to cover this campaign, and he has never walked out front but a throng of people to show his support. he's waving to the crowd, thank you very much, we're going to continue on. in the face of people like kelly ayotte and john mccain, john thune, the leadership saying they will no longer support donald trump and that he should probably step down. donald trump issued this tweet, quote, so many skelf-righteous hypocrites watch their poll numbers and elections go down. the strategy at least in the early going before the debate tonight is to disavow donald trump's remarks and then say, hey, let's get past it. listen to what his wife melania said in a release yesterday. quote, the words my husband used are unacceptable and offensive
9:03 am
to me. this does not represent the man that i know. he has the heart and mind of a leader. i hope people will accept his apology as i have and focus on the important issues facing our nation and the world. beyond that now leading toward the debate they are focusing in on hillary clinton. the contents of these e-mails from john podesta that were hacked accusing her of saying one ning in public and then pursuing very different policies behind closed doors. listen to what rudy giuliani told chris wallace earlier this morning. >> we have two candidates that have flaws. now, let's get to the issues. who are going to be better on the issues? she fought so hard to keep those secret and we now know why. if she had run the way she ran on those tapes for all those bankers -- she got paid millions of dollars for saying that stuff. this is stuff she got paid for. she would not be the candidate. >> bill, you mentioned the elephant in the room, and there is some information out there that the first thing that the
9:04 am
moderators will talk about at tonight's debate at washington university is that tape from 2005. donald trump has to have a really good answer for that or it's going to be all downhill from there. so we'll see what he says. >> he's been tweeting up a storm this morning, john. >> reporter: he has. >> and retweeting as well. there were stories written last night that there was turmoil inside of trump tower. what can you say about that reporting from inside? >> reporter: well, i mean, clearly, bill, when something like this happens, it's going to cause turmoil and you have to know this probably hit them harder than they ever thought that it would. on friday calls were being made from trump officials to various news organizations. i fielded one of them. kind of gauging the temperature of just how big a story this was going to be. you know, there were reports that mike pence was thinking of leaving. reports that kelly ann con wisconsin was thinking of
9:05 am
leaving. right now the team remains in place but it's still early hours. i think a lot will turn on how good a performance donald trump puts in tonight. there are many people who believe if he is to survive another day, he's got to have the performance of his night tonight. >> pence referred to that as getting this thing back on track again. thank you. john roberts live in st. louis. back to martha now. >> all of this, of course, makes the stakes tremendous tonight for both of these candidates. trump may now be dealing with the big gest challenge he has faced yet. chris, what does he have to do tonight and can he save it? >> first of all, isn't this a hell of an election. >> unbelievable. >> i did not think in my life -- i have not lived a good enough life to deserve to get to cover an election this crazy. >> we know that. >> that is a clear fact. but, lordy day. what does he need to do tonight to get back on track? i think what he needs to do tonight to get back on track is to be humane, kind, gentlemanly,
9:06 am
and decent. >> but how does he dispatch with the elephant in the room? >> he has to say it. you have to eat the whole elephant. you have to say, i'm sorry, i was wrong. remember here, the controversy isn't about him using locker room talk. the controversy here is about him bragging, and that he is no evidence that he did it, but him br bragging about what would be potentially a criminal offense. if he really did what he said he did, it would be a huge deal. he needs to apologize, take ownership, and then he needs to be kind. he needs to be humane and he needs to be decent. but the signals coming out of trump and trump tower right now are full mont monte, accuse bil clinton of rape, talk about huma abedin. >> his campaign always gets on better ground when he talks about the issues, about the people of america, when he talks about the borders, when he talks
9:07 am
about jobs. when he talks about regulations in this country. that's where he's on the stronger ground. if he wastes his time going into territory that's been unsuccessful for him before -- >> right. >> -- can he succeed doing that this time? >> no. so the mutually assured destruction -- trump has been threatening, threatening, threatening, if you talk about me of course i'm going to talk about you. he made the thinly veiled threat when he was on stage at hofstra, he said there are things i wanted to say but i just couldn't do it because they're so terrible. well, now we come to the moment where not the worst thing imaginable but a very bad thing has been put out on donald trump and now he has to choose. does he take his medicine, say i'm sorry again, he has to repeat i'm sorry, move on and be gracious. he has a very winning way about him when he chooses to be, a winsome, kind, slightly self-effacing. if you remember the interview he did with megyn kelly, he was quite charming in that interview.
9:08 am
if he was bring that here tonight, yeah, he could do something good. >> here is the problem for him. he could come out tonight and say, look, america, i'm that guy. i'm that obnoxious guy. you know me. >> uncle don. juf >> you have a friend like me. you have someone in your family like me. i want to make everybody laugh and stay stuff that is really awful -- >> but i would never do that. >> right. but the only way he can say that is if there's nothing worse or if there's not a woman who is going to come out and say, yes, he did that to me. if he's good on all that other stuff, he could say i'm that guy, and let's move on. >> we've heard from ben carson and now heard threats there's more and more and more that's going to keep coming up out and that's the problem. so that's why you've got -- look, in politics the thing about dealing with a scandal is you have to deal with it all the way through. you have to take it all the way down to the bottom of the line and be finished with it. witness hillary clinton's
9:09 am
failure to deal with her e-mail scandal. she tried to blow it off, and it has just hounded her as a consequence. >> is this masterful clinton opo we're seeing here? look at the timing. you have the miss universe thing -- >> that was good. that was a clinton kablooey. >> and he didn't resist. >> there's been a pattern. her we can canikileaks comes ou. there could be more. she may have something in her quiver for every single thing they're going to come out with. >> the other thing here is whether this was intentional or planned or whatever, doesn't matter because it's so salacious. it's got sex in it. it's got famous people in it. it's got celebrity. it's got all of that stuff. this is just catnip, and the problem for trump is the wikileaks story stays within the universe of politics. if you understand politics well enough to be offended by what
9:10 am
john podesta wrote allegedly in an e-mail, your vote is already spoken for. this story, stories about sex and power, those stories go everywhere and it goes into the broader medium, and it reaches voters who don't pay attention and that's -- >> and it's all about the one categorydogged him since the beginning, and that's women. you think about the question megyn asked him about in the beginning. this is one group he needs more than any other group and he did make traction with women at one point. >> he did. and you turned the corner in september and he started to come around and it was because he was acting humane and because he was acting more steady -- >> talking about the issues. >> and now we will see. his campaign comes to the crossroads and so does in a lot of ways this country. >> fascinating and important. all of it. >> yeah. >> great to see you as always. back to you in new york. >> there was an exodus in new york yesterday. about three dozen republicans

doing public, pulling their endorsement of donald trump in some cases. in other cases they frankly did not support trump to begin with. alabama senator jeff sessions has, and he's standing by trump offering a bit of advice to mr. trump and warning people about writing him off too soon when he said that. >> he needs to be himself. he needs to apologize clearly. he needs for the american people to know that he understands this kind of talk is unacceptable, and he has to stop it. and then he's got to refocus this whole question on what you want for america. twice he's been down. twice he's come back to lead. now he's down again presumably. i think he can move toward november on these issues. >> that from earlier today and our political report for real clear politics with me now. good day to you. >> good day. >> happy sunday. he's been down twice and he's come back to lead. and we were just talking about the posture for trump now. you see him, as i see him, over
9:12 am
the past several hours as going back on offense. frame that. >> absolutely. so we saw in the apology video that the campaign issued friday night. he did apologize but then quickly moved to change the subject to bill clinton and hillary clinton, and we've seen through rudy giuliani's interviews today and also trump's tweets overnight that that's where he wants to take this, and now this is something that lots of republicans don't want him to go down that avenue, going after hillary clinton for her husband's infidelities and her alleged involvement in covering or moving -- trying to move past those as well. republicans have seen in polling that that will backfire. they've seen the reverse effect, republicans moving closer or at least sympathizing with clinton in ways when they bring that up. >> rudy giuliani said today he did not think he would bring up bill clinton but he suggested he may refer to hillary's reaction
9:13 am
to female accusers in the past. in the video he said hillary has attacked, shamed, and bullied the victims. see more in the debate on sunday night. there's a clue in there. >> exactly. we've talked about this before, trump, when he's attacked and he feels like he is being attacked right now, we saw in the tweets yesterday, he said the media and republicans want me to get out. i'm never leaving this race. he was also tweeting today about republicans who were leaving the campaign who were not supporting him, withdrawing endorsements and asking him to leave the ticket saying that they will face a backlash of their own. so he is in a very aggressive posture right now, and he feels like he is being attacked. and i was talking to a lot of his supporters outside trump tower yesterday, and a lot of them were saying the same kind of thing, that the media is blowing this up and so forth. and so that's kind of where he's taking comfort in those supporters. the problem though is that lots of other people want him to be
9:14 am
more sincere and apologize further and get this conversation back on issues. >> here are some of the tweets from earlier today. so many self-righteous hypocrites referring to, i would imagine, republicans and others on screen. he said so many self-righteous hypocrites. watch their poll numbers and elections go down. another one, tremendous support except for some republican leadership. thank you. referring to the support. >> exactly. a lot of these republicans, you know, trump wasn't their first choice, but a lot of them are asking him to leave the ticket. now, of course, we know from talking to experts that that is not possible. ballots have been printed. people are already voting. early voting has begun in several states so that is not possible. but you're seeing a hemorrhaging of support from the trump campaign which is significant. campaigns are about addition and not subtraction. trump has been falling behind before all this in key
9:15 am
battleground states and nationally, and his goal was to gain more support, and by losing the republican party, that makes it all the more difficult. >> flip this around a little bit. if he does go there, how is she prepared to respond? >> well, we've seen -- >> what does she say? >> we've seen a couple kind of practice runs, so to speak. she was asked during a new hampshire town hall last year about this, and she said people who -- accusers should be believed until they're disbelieved and that was how she handled it. also she's talked about, you know, people have talked about her defending her family during that, and so i think she has the potential to flip that around and take a more -- have people sympathize with her more on that. i think it's a really tough road for trump to go down because she can then turn the tables back on him and talk about all these other things going around. >> you have 30 days left. giuliani said we have two candidates who have flaws, let's get back to the issues and figure out who is a better
9:16 am
candidate and who will be a better president. last word. >> these are two very unpopular candidates but we've seen trump since the first debate, since the end of the first debate, not able to get out from under himself, and i think that's really been key. for a lot of these republicans who are leaving, this instance was really the straw that broke the camels back. they have been watching the candidate over the past year but more specifically over the past week really falter at key moments, and so i think it's very difficult for him to rebound, and that's why i think all eyes will be watching tonight for the future of trump and also the future of the republican party. >> kaitlyn, thanks. real clear politics with us in studio. i'll be watching. >> yes. >> so will you. back to st. louis and more with martha from there. >> so much at stake tonight. great points there. as we get ready for the big debate tonight, it is very highly anticipated as we've all been talking about, but now it could be the most important moment in the campaign for both of these candidates, and that can just not be overstated. we're going to talk about it

we're getting a sneak peek of the room where it will all happen tonight for the town hall at washington university in the fieldhouse. it's been converted to this set, circular space where they're checking the microphones, getting everything ready. the schools are wrapped where they will be perched and walking around this space in an important night for them both. the microphone is at the ready for the questioners, the lucky people who get to represent really america as they sit and ask these two candidates the things that are the most burning issues on their minds.
9:22 am
there could be some very tense moments in this room. we've seen that before. the moderator is over here to the right will be seated where they're checking everything and making sure it all works. one thing we know about the town hall environment debate is that viewers at home tend to stick with it longer. the stitcher podium debate people generally hang with it for about 30 minutes but this format seems to keep them engaged longer so tonight is very important for how they react to people. there's a split screen with the questioner and the candidate so you can see the person's face. you can see whether or not they think their question is actually being answered or whether they like the answer or not and that gets felt very profoundly at home as well. we've seen some past debates in this environment. so tonight is where it's all going to happen, in this room as hillary clinton and donald trump get ready for what may be a decisive night in election 2016. we got in there right before they did the final lockdown and got a look at that room where that action will take place, bill, and it is -- it's very

small. it's very intimate in there. donald trump is a big guy, a tall guy, and hillary clinton, as we know, is shorter, and it's going to be an interesting dynamic to watch the two of them in those sort of close quarters, especially given the content of what we have seen play out over the last 48 hours. it's going to be something else, bill. >> the nonverbal, martha, and that physical interaction is very interesting. we had 85 million for debate number one. i don't know how many will watch tonight. i don't know if the events of the last two dates will drive that viewership higher or turn some people away but we shall see 30 days out. how did this school get that debate? >> they've had it several times before. in fact, they did the first one in 1992, which was first town hall debate, and that was george bush and bill clinton, and, in fact, the clinton folks said, hey, let's do a town hall debate and they were surprised that the bush people said yes, let's do something like that.
9:24 am
it was an arena bill clinton had used a lot in his primary campaigns and it worked well for him. they both walked into it. it was the one where george bush looked at his watch in the middle of it. i was talking to frank yesterday and he said as soon as george bush looked at his watch, he said, we can go home. this is over. >> not good. >> it was a tough introduction but they have a lot of experience with it. this is the fourth time they have done it and they are handling it really well. really well organized and everything is going great here. >> just remember, you're always on camera. martha, see new a moment. we have some breaking news out of california. want to get to that in a moment. there was a manhunt in palm springs, california, ending earlier today with the arrest of a man suspected of killing two police officers. they were responding to a domestic dispute when the suspect allegedly pulled out a gun, opened fire. a third officer wounded. he's now in the hospital. will carr in l.a. picks up our coverage from there.
