so what do they show? also, if you need a break from politics, how about this. you'll hear from the stunt man who pulled an evel knievel and rocketed over a canyon. let get too it. good merchandise afternoon from -- good monday afternoon from the deck. the moist powerful elect elected republican has given up on donald trump winning the white house. paul ryan held a conference call, said the leader told members he will not defend trump, will not campaign with him during the final weeks of the election. that source says speaker ryan announced he will spend all of his energy making sure hillary clinton doesn't got what we called a blank check with a democratic controlled congress and he also gave republican house members the cover to abandon trough as well, advising. the, quoting now, you need to do what is best for you and your districts.
12:02 pm
truth be told this isn't that big a walkback for paul ryan because paul ryan never really went there. remember, back in early summer, speaker ryan in june finally did announce he would vote for the party's nominee. the house speaker wrote a column in his hometown newspaper that read in part, and i quote, it's no secret we have our differences if won't pretend otherwise. when i feel the need toy'll continue to speak my mind. but the reality the speaker wrote, on the issues is that we have more common ground than disagreement. speaker ryan never endorsed anyone. never used the word endorse, never said the word endorsement and we reported here no ebb doorsment was given because it was not. then ryan's communication director tweeted, and i quote, feel free to call that endorsement. but we don't get to feel. he never issued an endorse: here's how speaker ryan
12:03 pm
explained that decision in an interview back then with abc news. >> i believe he is pit better hillary clinton. here's the question i asked. do i believe that these principles and policies have a better chance of making the law with donald trump and hillary clinton? absolute live die beli think ths necessary to save the country. >> endorse is an easy word. never did. today representatives for speaker ryan responded to what he said on the conference call this morning and said he is not, quote, unendorsing donald trump or conceding hillary clinton will be the next president. of course. not. hi -- he never endorsed. speaker ryan has been very clear, the republican currently closed to the white house just abandoned the republican seeking the presidency and told other republicans it's okay for them to do the same.
12:04 pm
that's never happened. most recently, dozens have deserted donald trump in response to that leaked video in which trump brags he can grope women, sexually assault women whenever he wants because he is a celebrity. at the delat last night when asked three times by anderson cooper trump said he had never done so, even though he admit he had done so in the audio record. trump and speaker ryan have never appeared together on the campaign trail. they were both supposed to speak at a rally in wisconsin. the big come-together of establishment leader and would-be president but did not happen because speaker ryan uninvited the billionaire candidate after the video went public. unfriend, anyone? where do things stand now. the latest national poll has secretary clinton with her biggest national lead, double digits, and republicans clear clearly in disarray.
12:05 pm
we have team fox coverage. carl cameron in pennsylvania and peter barnes is live. donald trump now responding to what speaker ryan said on the conference call. is that right? >> reporter: that's right. trump tweeted 9 minutes ago, quote, paul ryan should spend more time on balancing the budget, jobs and illegal immigration, and not waste his time on fighting republican nominee. but it is trump who is fighting to rebuild support among voters following that video on friday. a new "the wall street journal" nbc news poll of likely voters taken of the weekend before the debate shows clinton's lead over trump growing nationally. now 46% to 35%. when the two third-party candidates are included. most significantly her lead among women voters jumped to 21% in this new poll, up from a 12% lead over trump in the journal poll in september. >> back to the conference call.
12:06 pm
a regular thing that paul ryan does. reporters not on the call. what else have you learned. >> reporter: ryan made clear he is willing to take political heat from his own party for this position that he announced today. some pro trump house republicans said that after this weekend and after the debate, that while they condemned trump's lewd comments, republicans need to maintain their support for their nominee to help defeat hillary clinton. >> like many others i was disappointed when the video came forward. something he said 11 years ago, but the binary choice america faces, a future of next four years of barack obama if hillary clinton won the future of the supreme court. versus donald trump, the change agent. >> reporter: one thing some republicans are worried about now is a double hit because of trump. on he one hand there play be some republican voters who stay
12:07 pm
home because the don't like trump. which could cut votes for other republicans on the ballot, and on the other hand might be some republican voters who are trump supporters who won't vote for the congressional republicans in their district because of the anti-trump views of the washington establishment g.o.p.ars. >> a complicated student reality. donald trump set to hold a rally minutes from now in pennsylvania. so important that one. where both candidates need to win over undecidedded women voters, especially in the suburbs of the big city. philadelphia and pittsburgh. according to the real clear average of the polls, hillary clinton is well ahead of trump, up nine points in theodicean state. these poll numbers are taken before the debate. carl cameron is live in allentown pennsylvania. what are you hearing from g.o.p. officials about speaker ryan's comments this morning?
12:08 pm
>> reporter: well, some republicans in the house who, by winning their primary, have efolktively won the seat because of gerrymandering, the way in which districts put in cooky maps to maximize advantage. some republicans think this is an -- that the speaker of the house has an obligation to support the republican nominee. technically spoking the speaker of the house is supposed to represent both parties and resolving conflicts over regs to come to bills and send them to the president in the last 20 years the speakership is much more partisan than it was back in the day. having said that, there are a lot of republicans who are really, really worried about this. the debate performance last night, went over pretty well with republicans but republican candidates recognize that in order to win their elections for the senate, for for, for alderman, council and dog catcher, they're going to probably need something more than republican conservative

votes. moderates, swing votes, independents, lyber tareans and green party candidates, and trump probable live didn't make a lot of -- make up a lot of ground with them. the other aspect is the polls out today, "the wall street "tht journal" nbc pole shows a double did lead for clinton nationwide, and trump didn't use the word, sorry, last night he turned around and attack hillary clinton and did see effectively. more focused then the first debate and will staunch the bleeding for those republicans who were really, really waiverring but doesn't make up any ground for them when it comes to nong.o.p. conservative votes and that is necessary for these other candidates and they've got 30 days to find them. not much ground game in the trump campaign. not a lot of cash left for

advertising. and not a lot of time to change that. so there is significant heartburn amongst republicans and that's what you saw with paul ryan's move and trump slapped him for it so situation normal. >> in the debate last night, clear live donald trump threw his running meat under the bus on syria, today we sea the running meat and wouldn't have known it from hills attitude. >> reporter: no. seems to be back on the trump train. proud to be with donald trump and ryan and mike peps are thinking not only for this election but pence, as the vice presidential running mate, should trump loose, he is sort of next in line to ascend having been the running mate. paul ryan took a pass on that this year. he could have run. instead he chose to be speaker of the house. mike pence, governor of indiana,
12:11 pm
has other alternatives but could have an opportunity to compete in 2020. if donald trump goes down, pence could go with him or perhaps rise again in next four years. that's why pence is back on the campaign trail. has to remain loyal. to turn his back on trump would do him in any terms terms of fus separation for higher office. >> the reporting is interesting to me na that for weeks carl has been reporting is that what donald trump needs to do is get in that debate, be contrite, show contrition, say he is sorry, and then move on to issues that will attract women voters especially from the suburbs in pennsylvania some these other swing states. but he didn't do that. he shored up his base but didn't to for anymore. the base is 40%. he didn't go after the bunch he needs if he wants to win the presidency. why not? is something else up? and if so what is it?

and we'll make college affordable. now, i got to tell you, we don't really get any ideas that will help anybody else from my opponent. last night he admitted he hasn't paid a dime in federal income tax for years.
