hello, everyone. it's 5:00 in north city. this is "the five." two debates down, one to go and 29 days left before voters decide this race once and for all. the second showdown wasn't pretty. didn't start out with a handshake but it ended up with one. everything was on the table and on the line for donald trump after a tape released 48 hours prior to the debate nearly derailed his candidacy. trump needed to turn things out quickly. did he accomplish that? he faced questioned about his hot mike moment right out of the gate. apologized and then pivoted to

hillary clinton's husband's sordid pass. >> i hate it. it's locker room talk. it's one of those things. i will knock the hell out of isis. we will defeat isis. isis happened a number of years ago in a vacuum that was left because of bad judgment. i will tell you, i will take care of isis. >> what we all saw and heard on friday was donald talking about women, what he thinks about women, what he does to women. and he has said that the video doesn't represent who he is. but i think it's clear to anyone who heard it that it represents exactly who he is. >> if you look at bill clinton, far worse. mine are words and his was action. >> when i hear something like that, i am reminded of what my friend michelle obama advised us all. when they go low, you go high.

>> juan, do you think good response by donald trump, good apology and then good response by hillary? your thoughts? >> to me, big news out of yesterday is donald trump lives to fight another day. i hold him to a low bar. he got over the low bar. did he move the bar in terms of the election? no. i don't think he had much success in responding to the issue of the video. what he did have success in doing was putting on what looked to me like world wrestling association spectacular show. megyn kelly said at the start of the post-game last night, she said it was one of the low points, just dispiriting, depressing for americans to see such a spectacle. that's what i experienced. wow. this is what we have come to. >> can i point out two fun things that happened? boy, juan brought us all down. when he called her the devil.

that's the first time somebody literally demonized somebody. we talk about on shows -- they are demonizing people. he actually literally demon ic d ized her. >> was it when the fly landed on hillary? it is? >> i love the looming. when she's talking and donald was behind her, it was like they were in line at the bank and he is in a rush. get your card out. she's talking -- >> fill out the slip, lady. >> she's asking for a complimentary pen. he is going, goit ta go. it was ve >> do you think it was bullying? >> i think he was -- he is like a teenage boy. he doesn't know what to do when he is not doing anything. >> i thought it was he was -- how would you say? prowling the set and making it very clear he was the dominant male. >> he was making himself feel comfortable, when he needs to do something. everyone was saying, it's a disaster. he should drop out. all of that.

to tell you the truth, i enjoyed the debate. i like this. i like politics. i like watching debates. i think he had a huge hurdle to overcome and he think he exce exceeded and outperformed expectations. he was very measured in the first debate. he got after it in this debate, cl is not easy to do when you have that tape out with the things he said. i'm sure his wife was not happy with him. he was losing some support. he came up and he smashed it. you gotta give credit where credit is due. i don't think you will say anything positive. >> almost. in juan's world that was positive. >> i have a voe very low bar. >> like a snail. >> overall view? >> i think that she won the first half hour. he won the second half hour. the third half hour was a draw. i also feel like both of them, once again, were trying to win their primary again. they solidified their bases.

he needed to. right? in terms of what juan is saying, did that give republicans hope? i think he throuew away any pretense of civility. i'm going to throw it all out there. i wish would you hayou would ha me. i was here alone. there was nobody especially here. it was 11:00 here. i wanted to use a poker reference or a gambling one. you put it all on red and led it ride? >> that's roulette. >> i wasn't sure if it was correct. that was one of the things he wanted to do. he needed to change the subject, change the headline. he succeeded in that for four hours. then this morning, we have republican national committee officials, we have a united states senator who is actually now they are trying to explain what sexual assault is or is not. and this has been dominating their headlines all day. plus there's more to come in this show. i think that, sure, he had a

much better debate than the first one. but does it change anything for the trajectory of the race? probably not. >> let's move on to the next heated exchange. it was hillary clinton's turn to have her feet held to the fire. >> within hours, i said that i was sorry about the way i talked about that. because my argument is not with his supporters. it's with him. and with the hateful and divisive campaign he has run. >> we have a divided nation because people like her. believe me, she has tremendous hate in her heart. and when she said deplorables, she meant it. and when she said irredeemable -- they are irredeemable -- you didn't mention that. but when she said that, to me that might have been even worse. >> boxing reference. gloves came off last night. >> i know that one. i think that his supporters really wanted to see him stick it to her. in the primary, he would say,

during those debates, i am the one who can take it to hillary clinton. i will be the one that stands up to her. i will call her the devil and say she has hate in her heart. again, winning that primary over and over again. i just don't know if that gets you to the next step. in fact, i'm sure it doesn't. >> well, you know, it's interesting, when this is occurring how she just smiles. i think it was like -- here is another sports met for. she was so far ahead, she held on to the ball and just was hoping to run out the clock. if she didn't win, it didn't matter. she knew at the end of the day -- i said end of the day. sorry. she would be so far ahead it didn't matter. she kind of let him go and just waited it out. when i look at this -- this is team sport politics at its worst. if you were -- if trump were a dem, we would go at him like crazy. if she were a republican, the dems would go after her. they both have serious flaws that both sides would condemn.

they happen to be on your side. this is the most -- this is the perfect example right there of team sports. he is calling her names. she is calling him names. >> what i see is republicans -- the republican so-called establishment in turmoil over donald trump. >> i see that. >> that's the same team. you see the party just divided. yesterday when he had the pre-debate meeting with the four women who charged sexual misbehavior on the part of bill clinton, i'm telling you -- then the chair of the party had to stop trump from putting those four women in the family seating section. that -- >> let's be accurate. >> i thought it was family seating. >> hillary had senator mcckaske in there. >> you have republicans here in

an intereramural moment. what we see going on in terms of some of the people that dana is talking about saying, i can't back this guy. >> bill o'reilly said it this morning. this is a lot of republicans who stick their -- wet their finger and figure out which direction the wind is blowing and they will be behind him if it's blowing in his direction and fall out -- >> i don't think that's the case. i think that's wrong. there are a lot of people that are sticking to principles that were ideological conservatives who said this guy was not for us and because -- they are not fair weather friends. kasich, he never went there. there's a lot of people that didn't go there. >> those are people who never got in line. we're talking about the people who were in line and -- >> you were telling him, get behind. you better get in line now. you better get in line. now they're leaving. >> i honestly think that if you want a gop in the white house, you are going to have to get behind him. you are going to have to.

abortion will come to the supreme court level in the next four, eight years. gun laws are going to come up at the supreme court level. immigration will come to the supreme court if you have hillary clinton, we know, the list of donald trump supreme court nominees is conservative. >> we should have nominated an electable candidate. >> it's too late. >> you are right. it's too late. hillary is president. >> you want to weigh in on this? >> i think people like paul ryan and other individuals before he got super involved in making comments about this race, mitt romney, it's not their style. they're not the candidate that donald trump is. i don't think that paul ryan was ever super comfortable with this. his message is strong and clear. i'm going to go do all the events and the fund-raising and the -- go out to my constituents and the message to the rest is do what you need to do district to retain your seat or win your seat. that's a very specific focus

message. trump, who is happy i think many times to kind of be on his own and beat to his own drum will do what he does best. to me last night was no surprise. they were hitting him hard. obviously, those are clinton supporters. maybe more to come. this is not shocking to anybody. i never expected he wasn't going to go out there last night and try to crush it and punch back hard, because he was criticized widely for not doing so. dana makes a point, it's important that this is what his supporters want. there have been people waiting for someone to come and hit hard on the clintons and talk about this stuff that are in his group. they were like, that's what we were waiting for. that group is always going to be all in on him, no matter what other tapes or anything else comes out. i think that's like -- they are glued in to him, not just baked in. >> you know what the problem is for me? is that the criticism of hillary is so valid. the fact that a feminist smeared victims of sexual assault, is

unbelievable. her side doesn't hold her feet to the fire about what she did to those women. the problem also is trump isn't the right messenger for that. because he called billed accusers terrible, he called them unattractive. he called paula jones a loser. now we're supposed to say, good job. now that you are running -- >> no one says good job. no one at this table has said good job about some of the things he has said. what i'm saying -- maybe other people -- what i'm saying is, not good job. not as conservative as you would want. but the alternative right now is definitely what we don't want or what i would not want for the country. my son and my family. >> i would argue that if hillary is -- the key is to hold on to the house and senate at this point. i don't see trump winning. a compromise damaged hillary clinton is you can control. >> fair enough. >> one more. this topic was blowing up my twitter feed. the debate moderators were working against the republican

and iran were about defeating isis. i'm like, what? >> can i bring dana in here? mitt romney didn't push back on candy crawly when she made the comment about benghazi. donald trump didn't push back when she said i wasn't there. >> i think that the timing just -- in a debate like that, it might have been confusing. he would kn we know she was there because she writes about it in the book and how she said her position was to go ahead and bomb assad's base and the airplane so he could not do the things he ended up doing. she was willing to look at arming the rebels. she actually writes that in her book. she's not successful in and persuasive. neither was gates or the national security team because obama and biden decided to go their own way. that's when kerry took over. i don't think -- i think trump

threatening, that he didn't win the debate. he certainly didn't impress american women that he needs to expand his base beyond the 40% so he can win an election. >> bolling? >> that wasn't the most impressive part of the e-mail dump that we learned. for me, for the fun one was when doug ban told podesta chelsea clinton was acting like a spoiled child. don't bring up medical records. this one that no one reported. this sticks out because i've been tough on george stephanopoulos. i called him out for some of his history, whether he should be even interviewing these candidates. this one is an e-mail from clinton staffers regarding george stephanopoulos who just interviewed peter schweitzer. this is the e-mail, great work. this interview is perfect. he lands nothing and everything

is refuted. this part, mostly based on our work. which means that ferguson is a democratic operative, which means they were coordinating the democratic operatives and they were coordinating with george stephanopoulos sending them talking points to refute the book and n in an interview and stephanopoulos took the bait. >> reporters talk the campaign as they get ready for the interview. >> listen, that sounds really unethical. >> i can reiterate -- >> that's what reporters do. >> it suggests collusion. >> is knowing chelsea is a brat worth violating privacy? life is messy. humans are flawed. life is a rock. you pull it back, you see bugs. all of us have bugs. to me, i don't want to know that chelsea is a brat. i don't want to knowe-mails. >> delight that e-mail where i called you cute. >> i printed that out.

rumors swirled over what mike pence would do, whether he would withdraw. he put that idea out to pasture. >> i was false. the really story is that donald trump stepped up and won a debate last night that seeped to be against all odds. he stepped up. he showed humility. he showed strength. he expressed genuine contrition for the words that he had used on the video that became public. then he moved directly into the choice of the american people are facing. i'm just proud of the job he did, proud of my running mate. >> he put that to bed. no more questions. mike pence is in and it's 28 days. he is going to go the distance. kimberly, one of the things as a congressional ballot now has democrats at 49%, republicans at 42%. republicans in the senate have been doing pretty well, running ahead of donald trump in a couple of states. that looked good until recently.

ryan's job is to keep the majority he said today. i personally can't do it. you have to do what you can. that caused problems because there were people within the republican ranks that said, you gotta stick with donald trump. he said, you do what you need to do and you do what i need to do. what do you think? >> it's complicated. >> they're all friends. >> they're all friends. you know, he is in a tough position. but nevertheless, my god, there is a possibility donald trump could be president of the united states and he will have to work with paul ryan. think about that relationship and the congressional counselor that's going to have to come in. i understand that he also has a little bit of a different agenda. right? now he is worried that this is a house and a senate that has issues and needs to be shored up, because if hillary clinton is president, you need to make sure that you retain seats to be able to manage her and do what they need to do, which is probably try to go against executive orders, try and go

against her votes, exercise veto. there's a lot you want to do. they could have a tough time if she starts picking u.s. supreme court justices. there's a lot going on. at the same time, you can understand that trump would be upset to say, wow, this is a little fickle. you have never been enthusiastic, but this is not party unity when it's coming from the speaker. i don't know. >> rnc over the weekend halted some victory projects. priebus said publically that they will spend the money and do what they can. >> the reporting over the weekend was that kellyanne conway, campaign manager, was reluctant to continue. she refuted that this morning. mike pence refuted the fact someone said he was having reluctance as well. priebus, there was rumors that the rnc would divert money from the presidential campaign. he said, no, we're all in.

nothing changed. he said there's a very upbeat attitude after the debate. >> yeah. >> they are staying on board. they are right there. which is good new. i wish all of -- everyone would say, you know what, i have a problem with donald trump, i don't line the guy for whatever, name your reasons, but we would rather have him than hillary clinton and maybe get some of the party unity back where we don't risk the house -- i don't think we're risking the house, for the record. we don't risk the senate. maybe win the white house as well. >> donald trump has said he doesn't care about the down ballot. he is not worried about it. >> i kind of find this unity plea a little bit precious after this last year where we tore apart the republican party, went after experienced candidates because they were, quote, establishment. i think the conference call wasn't about last week. it's about -- or last weekend. it's about what's going to happen next. what happens? when is the other shoe going to drop? the campaign is like a car driving on the free way and they are running on empty and they're

donald trump. look at new hampshire. yeah, someone mike schumann could look up to. that is all over new hampshire now. you know what struck me was in the poll this morning from "the wall street journal," they have hillary clinton up by 11, i believe. i think that might be high. but the key here was, lower and lower rates of republicans were willing to stand with donald trump after the video on friday. i think that's a real troubling sign for the trump campaign. >> let's see after this debate the numbers and then after the vegas debate. >> vegas, baby. >> i never heard that before. >> we will be there. >> there were many awkward moments at last night's debate from the beginning until the very end. >> would either of you name one positive thing that you respect in one another? >> one nice thing and then one more thing coming up.
