back on the big day before the big day with this alert as we await for donald trump to make an appearance in colorado springs. we're going to hear from him just moments away. that's mike flynn who's at the podium as he gets ready to introduce him. a little while ago the president spoke about donald trump, said he wasn't going to make any comments about the election, but then he couldn't resist i guess and thought that donald trump was whining about the rigged election issue. so look for some reaction to that in a few minutes from

colorado springs. in the meantime, a man in body armor stormed into a starbucks with a loaded rifle, pointed it at police officers in an apparent ambush. what we're learning now about the possible motive in this case, very disturbing stuff. trace gallagher joins us live with more on that. hi, trace. >> reporter: hey, martha, this is in vallejo. two police officers were sitting in star bucks on a break having coffee. adam powell appeared wearing full body armor, carrying a modified military assault weapon. he pointed the weapon at police and allegedly tried to fire but the gun jammed and the suspect fled. that's when the officers pulled out their guns and gave chase, opening fire on powell at a nearby intersection. powell was struck three times and is hospitalized with life threatening injuries. investigators are now looking at the surveillance videos trying to piece together exactly what

happen happened. the vallejo police chief says it appears to him the suspect was, in fact, targeting police. watch. >> at this point, we know the suspect drove by starbucks approximately six minutes before this confrontation, so we presume that this was a pretated ambush. >> reporter: the motive remains unclear but just a before powell allegedly tried to shot those police officers, authorities were called to his home because powell's two-year-old son suffered a gunshot wound. police say the child's shooting appears to have been accidental or self-inflicted, but all possibilities are being investigated because just before police arrived at the scene of the child's shooting, adam powell left his home and was not seen again until he showed up at starbucks later that evening. the two-year-old, we should note, remains in critical condition. >> awful. what a terrible story. trace, thank you very much.
