first from the fox news desk, at lealast it's friday. president-elect trump scheduled to leave for new jersey to meet with former republican nominee mitt romney tomorrow. this after the president-elect today tapped through conservatives for top positions in his administration. jeff sessions, retired general michael flynn for national security adviser, and the kansas republican congressman mike pompeo to head up the cia. all three have slammed president obama's counterterrorism and national security policies. they also have long careers in public service. senator sessions was one of the president-elect's earliest supporters during the campaign. he's been in congress nearly two decades. he serves on the senate judiciary committee and other panels. senator sessions has also faced quite a bit of controversy. former president ronald reagan nominate him to be a federal judge in the 1980s when he was a

u.s. attorney in alabama. the senate rejected now-senator sessions after people who worked with him accused him of being a blatant racist. one african-american assistant u.s. attorney testified that sessions called him "boy" and said sessions thought that kkk members were " ookay" until he learned they smoked marijuana. a trump adviser said the transition team does not anticipate that being a problem this time around. retired lieutenant general michael flynn does not need senate confirmation to be a national security adviser. the general was another of trump's most loyal supporters during the campaign. general flynn spent more than three decades in the military. he's a registered democrat and serves as director of defense intelligence agency under president obama. the retired general stepped down from that position in 2014 or was forced out. he says obama administration officials forced him out because he disagreed with their approach to fighting terrorism. critics claimed he mismanaged that agency. they also accuse him of

insummiting muslims repeated -- insulting muslims repeatedly. he tweeted, "fear of muslims is rational. please forward this to others. the truth fears no questions." the tweet included a link to a youtube video about radical islam. congressman mike pompeo will face a senate confirmation process to become cia director. the kansas republican joined the house in 2011. analysts call him one of the most conservative members of the freshman class. he serves on intelligence, energy, and commerce committees and the house select committee on benghazi. the former cia and nsa director, michael hayden, calls congressman pompeo a serious man and says he is heartened at the selection to be america's spy chief. analysts say the latest selections may show president-elect trump is good on his campaign promise to be a conservative commander in chief. you may remember before the election, some republicans accused donald trump of not being a true conservative. his old gop rival, ted cruz, called him a rich new york liberal and compared him to

hillary clinton. doug mckelway at trump tower where trump will be hitting the road in a minute. doug? >> reporter: hi, and given some of nation sessions' remarks from long ago and given mike pompeo's remarks and tea party affiliation, democrats who were so badly wound ed on election night not happy with the confirmation process. we're hearing that will be the case. the soon-to-be minority leader chuck schumer said in statement today, i'm quoting now, "i know senator sessions, and we have worked out in the gym. the fact that he is a senator does not absolve flim answering tough questions in the confirmation process. given some of his past statements and thoughts on immigration reform, i am very concerned about what he would do with the civil rights division at the justice department." senator majority leader mitch mcconnell is standing by his man and issued a statement following up saying, "when it was collaborating with senator

durbin to address sentencing disparities or keeping up with ted kennedy to combat sexual assault in prison, jeff has always looked out for the safety, security, and freedoms of his constituents and the nation." now to the cattle call. senator tomc cotton of arkansas is seen as a potential candidate for secretary of defense. form governor mike huckabee of arkansas also here. considered to be a candidate for any number of potential cabinet positions. also here today, our boss, rupert murdoch. i ran for the truck when i saw that. >> it's always best. doug, good to see you. thank you. chris wallace, anchor of "fox news sunday" live from the capitol hill newsroom. let's go through these starting with senator sessions. he has detractors. >> oh, absolutely. a couple of things. first of all, there is the 1986 of -- he was a u.s. attorney as you mentioned, he was named to the federal court, the district court by ronald reagan in 1986.

he had to go for senate confirmation, and the senate refus refused. it was almost entirely about this issue of civil rights. he had made a number of statements at the time. he had said he believed the naacp was un-american. the aclu un-american, and he also brought up voter fraud against some civil rights workers who had registered a lot of african-americans. now this was 30 years ago. you can be sure that democrats in the senate are -- i did an interview with chuck schumer, democratic leader. he made it clear there's not going to be the senate boys club here. they're going to be tough on him both on a civil rights record and also much more recently in terms of immigration. he's been one of the leading spokesmen against immigration reform in the senate. so i'm not sure that they're going to be able to block him, but they're going to make things tough for sessions during his

confirmation hearing. >> then there's general michael flynn. and frankly, chris, people on both sides of the aisle are expressing -- not everyone, but a lot of people on both sides of the aisle are expressing deep concern. >> well, look, he very much mirrors donald trump. and he was the first major general national security official support trump and trump and he were very much in tune on foreign policy. on two main issues -- first of all, a very hard line against islam, and a somewhat softer line -- when i say islam, i should say radical islamic terrorism. he as he said in the tweet that you showed, has raised questions about islam saying it's natural to fear islam. that's going to raise eyebrows. also he's been softer as has trump when it comes to russia. in fact over for a big gala

celebrating r.t., it the russian sponsored run television network, english language television network in moscow this year and performance seat alongside vladimir putin. they get along on that. that job is not subject to senate confirmation. that's a white house staff job. people can grumble all they want. that's who donald trump wants at his right hand. >> speaking outside the golden elevators. let's listen -- >> what our meeting was about, it really should come from him. what's that? and elections have consequences, to republicans when he became president. that's what donald trump can say. he's very conservative, was a member of house intelligence botch was a member of the house benghazi committee and one of the tougher questioners of hillary clinton during that 11-hour marathon hearing. but solid credentials. and i suspect he'll have very little trouble getting through as the cia director. let me quickly say, you talk about the fact that he's going to be spending the weekend at his golf club in bed minister, new jersey, a place i've never been fortunate enough to be. and a big meeting with mitt romney. these guys said terrible things about each other during the primary campaign. stow very least, it shows trump's not nursing a grudge, that he wants to have inclusiveness among republicans and democrats. there's talk about him as a potential secretary of state. i frankly doubt it. not just because of the things they've said about each other, but also because trump and romney have very different views

kushner was behind demoting chris christie in the transition chairman and kicking his allies off the team. the campaign denies that. there's good reason to believe it. we have more on this. trace, kushner and christie, they have a bit of a history. >> reporter: they do. in 2004 while he was the u.s. attorney for new jersey, chris christie prosecuted the case against jared kushner's father, charles, for tax evasion, witness tampering. charles kushner, a prominent democratic donor, was convicted and sentenced to two years. the case made huge headlines and helped launch chris christie into the republican elite. the trump team flatly denies that jared kushner was behind the perjurying of christie and his -- purging of christie and his allies from the transition team. >> couldn't be further from the truth. jared did a fantastic job with the campaign. obviously the president-elect respects his counsel very much.

and a number of people who he's had the opportunity to work with during the campaign. >> reporter: the transition team says lobbyists are the only ones being kicked off and that's to make good on a trump campaign promise. >> jared kushner's getting a lot of attention for a guy who doesn't like the spotlight at all. >> kushner is calm, composed, and camera shy. the president-elect says his son-in-law is very good at politics, despite the fact that he has zero political experience. and really had no official position with the trump campaign. but kushner is making his own mark in business. he owns a skyscraper on 5th avenue in man a few blocks from trump you toer it. ten years ago at 25 years old, jared kushner bought "new york observer newspaper." the orthodox jew even used the editorial section to defend donald trump against accusations of anti-semitism. it's unclear what advisory role if any jared kushner will take on during the trump

supported him or not. let's bring in erin zitner, national politics editor for the "washington journal." the video doesn't get erased. i mean, they're aware we were watching, right? >> boy, to be a fly on the wall when mitt romney meets donald trump or maybe a caddy in the clubhouse because they'll meet at bedminister, the golf club in new jersey. they're not rivals, they're not adversari adversaries. mitt romney and trump are political enemies, if you spin back to when mitt romney stepped up and done what many in the party thought that the other -- the other candidates for the nomination should do and said, do not nominate this guy. called him ay and a fraudy and . at a time when the primaries were rolling. that's a -- it's a lot of bread to break, to resolve that conflict. >> yeah. you've said that it's possible

if not floobl some of of this is -- probable that some of this is show. >> that's right y. do you have a range of people come in? you want to show if you're the president-elect that you're being judicious, you're considering all kinds of people. that you're casting a wide net. to some degree, that you're mending rifts in the party. you bring in ted cruz and nikki haley and mitt romney. it will be interesting to see if any of them do get swept -- selected for a trump is administration, and that would be contrary to the early signs we're seeing so far from the kinds of people he's selected. >> we hear about that for secretary of state and see rudy giuliani for secretary of state. giuliani, no matter what you think about rudy giuliani, he backed him from word one, from jump in this campaign. if you were to select mitt romney over rudy giuliani, that -- that unweird, wouldn't it? >> well, it does seem unlikely. and -- so far, we haven't really got a serious contender for any job with mike pompeo for cia being the lone exception.

he endorsed marco rubio in the primaries. we haven't seen a jeb bush brought into the administration and certainly not any democrat. remember barack obama brought in ray lahood. >> yeah. >> a republican congressman, to be transportation secretary. a show of some bipartisanship. we're not there yet with donald trump. >> wait, it looks like david petraeus is running for secretary of state, doesn't it? >> that's right. and that would be interesting, too. so look, so far, as you've heard in your show so far, the biographies of these gentleman. they've either been with donald trump from the beginning, as mr. flynn and mr. bannon and jeff sessions have been, or they're very ideologically attuned to the sharper ideological edges of trump's policy ideas. they're either sharply against iran or very eager to fight what they call islamic fundamentalist terrorism. >> yeah. david zitner from the "wall street journal," national politics editor. great to see you, thank you.

got a call from my friend, bill ford, chairman of ford, who advised me that he will be keeping the lincoln plant in kentucky. no mexico." he continued, "i worked hard with bill ford to keep the lincoln plant in kentucky. i owed it to the great state of kentucky for their confidence in me." associated press and others report, that auto giant was never going to transfer. it was actually going to transfer production of one vehicle, the lincoln mkc, so it could boost production of more popular models, the ford escape. company representatives apparently said there were no plans to cut even one single u.s. job. in an e-mail to the a.p., a ford spokeswoman would not con firm that executive -- when executives made the decision or when president-elect trump influenced the decision. she wrote, "we are encouraged that president-elect trump and the new congress will pursue policies that will improve u.s. competitiveness to make it possible to keep production of this vehicle here in the united states." john busse is the associate editor for the "wall street journal" and here with us on the

deck. he didn't actually do what he said he did. >> yeah. john stool and christina rogers of our detroit bureau have a great sort of play by play of what actually happened. it's in our website. and you're right, the number of jobs that that plant employs before and after this announcement are unchanged. as you point out, all they were going do is that they had already announced to the uaw they were going to move production of the lincoln crossover suv to mexico so they could boost production of the ford escape which is also made at that plant. that's all that was going to happen. no jobs were going to be lost. no jobs were going to be gained. the plant was going operate as usual. but the language that -- that donald trump is using is, hey, i already have -- i'm already showing you, i'm keeping jobs in the united states. from ford's side of this, in is their way of tossing him an easy way. he can claim they kept the

lincoln production in the united states. as far as that affecting jobs, no effect. >> it's similar to kind of things that happened during the campaign. we seem to be in a world where where you can say whatever you want because you can. >> it's weird. >> yeah, this twisting of the truth or twisting it to my advantage or telling an untruth entirely, that was a problem in the campaign. either he misunderstood what was happeninga this -- >> possible -- >> completely possible, but the notion we're keep think plant in kentucky, you know, is just like a way overstatement. ford is moving ahead with everything it's plan, to build a $1.6 billion plant in mexico to make the ford focus. that's being made in michigan now, a money loser. they'll make a small car in mexico. what they've said to workers, we're going to move in suv
