trump's inner circle than mitt romney. the long-time rivals met for over an hour and the president-elect's longest meeting of the day and we're told it was a wide-ranging discussion. despite their history of bashing one another romney is said to be one of a number of people to serve as secretary of state. after their meeting mr. trump yelled to reporters that it went great. romney wouldn't say if he was offered any position, but he had this to say about the meeting. >> i appreciate the chance to speak with the president-elect and look forward to the coming administration. >> we had a far-reaching conversation with regards to the various theaters in the world where there are interests of the united states of real significance. >> now, mr. trump had a number of meetings yesterday, including with the former chancellor of d.c. public schools who was

mentioned as a potential pick and met with robert woodson who works on anti-poverty programs and tod ricketts an owner of the chicago cubs. with retired marine general james m who is a strong candidate for secretary of defense. after their meeting, trump was clearly impressed, as well. >> all i can say is he is the real deal. just a brilliant, wonderful man. what a career and we're going to see what happens. >> now, mr. trump went on to say that we will likely hear some news later today about additional picks for his cabinet, as well. keep your eyes and ears out for that. >> garrett, thank you. >> maybe he'll make the announcement on our show. s. >> we'll look for it. it is interesting. folks are coming to new jersey and greeting him. have you seen anything like this

intelligence james clapper asking him to appear before congress to discuss that report. rogers is rumored to be a lead contender to replace clapper as the director of national intelligence in the trump administration. and blatant disrespect for our military. the gold star family of sergeant john perry of california booed by passengers onboard a united airlines flight while they were on their way to bring his remains home. the family claims that the family to make sure they made their connecting flight. perry was one of four americans that was killed when he stopped a homicide attacking just short of their target. likely saving hundreds of soldiers lives. that is a horrible story. >> really is. > he is. it is freezing out there this morning, rick. you really felt it. >> it is chilly, though hp had to break out the coat.

trump? he called donald trump a fraud and a phony. >> it isn't even just the name calling, i think, that will have donald trump maybe not necessarily putting him in his cabinet. he also actively opposed him, didn't really help him when he was threatened over in utah by a third party candidate. but he may, perhaps, throw him a bone and ambassadorship and maybe go further perhaps with the problems. >> maybe there is a middle step here. >> but, mike, this idea of a team of rivals. barack obama tried it when i was covering that transition, 2008 to 2009. did it work out with hillary clinton? >> i think it did. i don't think it worked out for clinton's subsequent presidential aspirations. >> but having that division within the cabinet. >> i think the bigger position to disagree with my colleague. the bigger the position romney is offered, the bigger person president-elect trump looks like. all the name calling and all the nastiness, that was yesterday. you get to rewrite history and recast it because that was a

i don't know much about general michael flynn, but my knowledge is very clear that islam is not a political ideology. islamism is. that's a very important distinction. someone like general flynn can be forgiven because we really haven't made that distinction in the united states and looking at it with fresh eyes, hopefully with our new president may give us that opportunity. unlike president obama who went to the beginning of his first presidency to cairo to give a speech. i think our new president should go to places like louisville, kentucky, home of one of the greatest muslims in america in history. muhammad ali or home of the biggest muslim communities in the united states and engage with us just as he's engaged with every other american through this process. >> speaking of that. when you look back at the past eight years, what has president obama gotten wrong when it comes to fighting terrorism and labeling it for what it is and what can mr. trump learn from

these past eight years, inn your opinion, to get it right? >> so, i think one of the key things that has been very difficult for a muslim like me, observing islam, devoting to combatting islamism is to find a space to talk about this. that's hindered by people not understanding the language and a previous president or a president about to leave the white house not encouraging that conversation. that empowers only those who would masquerade as muslims. only those who support a radical ideology that is not a religion, but a political to talterrorism. >> for those who are main stream, you would want that distinction. otherwise you have this sort of, you have a joining of the two that you wouldn't want. how do you draw that distinction? >> that's a great point, pete. that's where muslims like me can come and help and making that distinction. islam is a very simple faith.

ci achlt director and adviser to president-elect jim woolsey. thanks for joining us this morning. let's start with the cia director. tell us why he's a great pick. >> i talked to him yesterday at some length. i had not known him before. but it looks to be an excellent choice. first class at west point, distinguished military career, distinguished legal career. i think he's going to be an excellent director of the cia. >> jim, tell me, you know the ins and outs of the cia. what needs to change? >> the cia now, after the '04 reorganization, following 9/11 and all of that, are -- it's a somewhat different agency than it was and it's also been seen a great deal of reorganization from its current director.

so that answer to that question is a bit in flux. in part, it's going to be what the president wants. covert action, for example. you don't do anything to events way or another -- that's not something the cia does on its own to put it mildly. as far as intelligence analysis and reports are concerned, the d and i is under the system, the chief intelligence adviser to the president. but he or she needs to take the arrangements to report to the president from his point of view. for example, neither president clinton nor president reagan had briefings in the morning. they read intelligence because they didn't want to take the

time to have somebody read it out tloud them. differentments have done that different ways. they need to spend a little bit of time shaking down the way they're going to work together. it will probably work well. >> how about general flynn, how do you anticipate his pick changing that agency. >> that's i think also an excellent choice. one of the things i like about mike is he has a history and background of calling it straight. he's seen some opposition to put it mildly. when he does call it straight. that's the first principal job of an intelligence analyst or intelligence executive. not to get bogged down in trying to please people. i think that is also what you want to see in the u.n. ambassador. i hope it's somebody like k.t.

now, george wallace, during the times was one of the most racist people in our history. yet, through love, through communication and through resisting nonviolently, george wallace repented. i believe the heart of the servant leader can draw that out of anybody. that's why i'm looking at mr. trump, his administration, his choices. what would jesus do? what can i say that will heal? i'm encouraging mr. trump and his picks not to go on the defensive but to assert we want to heal america. we want to work together for america. that's the voice that has to continue insanity. the media did not -- kellyanne conway is right, did not prepare fours a trump win. now we have that. are we going to keep splintering and dividing or are we going to come together. that's a great point. i want your thoughts on this story we've been covering for the past 24 hours. the play hamilton.

gave a lecture to vice president-elect mike pence. he went there with his family to enjoy a friday night out lectures him about politics at the end of the show. even get boos from the audience. what is your reaction to that? >> that was a seize the day moment. so the lecture came and i think that vice president-elect pence from my understanding kind of quietly got up and went out waited until he heard the whole rant or chastisement. i believe that if i had purchased a ticket and i was just part of the general audience, i would have expected to see a great performance. i might not have wanted to buy an opportunity to hear a lecture. so perhaps that was a seize the day, seize the moment. much of america is fearful. so i believe now is the time to say we are going to make america great. we're going to heal america.

today. as somebody who worked with jeff sessions closely when you were attorney general. he served a long time on the judiciary committee. is this kind of criticism of him fair? >> well, listen, the confirmation process is intended to look at everything about someone's past. accomplishments and challenges and what i would say is i think the senate and the american people, quite frankly, need to look at the entire record of jeff sessions. not only what he may have said or may have done 30 years ago, but what he's done since then as state attorney general as a member of the judiciary committee to ensure that the civil rights laws that exist on the books today are applied evenly and fairly to people of all races. again, i think it's perfectly appropriate to look at everyone's record. we expect that when you're nominated to a key position like this. that everything is fair game to be looked at. let's look at the entire record. that's only fair for senator jeff sessions. >> to your point, the fact that a lot of democrats are leaving out, it was jeff sessions who

helped desegregate the schools. you can bet republicans will talk about that. what about some of the racially charged comments he aldsly made decades ago. is that fair game as well? >> again, this was looked at before in connection with his confirmation as a federal judge. i suspect, yes, anything in your background is fair game. but i think it's very, very important that the entire record be evaluated. that's only fair for senator sessions, only fair for president-elect trump. listen, we just went through a divisive campaign. there were charges of racism during this campaign and i think in this kind of environment it is very important to make sure we have an attorney general that everyone feels comfortable and confident is going to apply the laws fairly, equally to individuals irrespective of their skin color, their last name or zip code. >> judge, i've got 30 seconds. you've said this transition feels different than 2000 when you were intimately involved.

let's get right down to business, secretary of state is a pivotal job and early speculation centered on rudy giuliani and chris wallace reporting this morning he spoke to a transition official who says the mitt romney meeting went better than expected yesterday and he is seriously in contention here. "the new york times" reporting that he was maybe promoting himself too much for secretary of state and that might have hurt his chances. can you clear this up for us? >> first of all it's an honor to work with president elect trump and if you look and i'm answering the question even though you may think i'm not. it all fits together. we have a president-elect who started out this last wednesday morning talking about bringing all americans tonight. no matter who you are and what your background or race or ethnicity, he wants you to be proud of the work we're going to do but also wants people to understand that he's for everybody.

what you're seeing over the course of the last several days is everyone coming together in our party. you saw ted cruz come in and mitt romney come -- seeing all sorts of folks from the most incredible backgrounds and generals and innovators and women, all races. so what i think people should take from this initially is number one, we have someone that is actually speaking to america saying i'm your president, no matter who you are, whether we fought in the president, whether we were friends in the past. we are going to work together and move america forward. as far as the mitt romney meeting went, it was personal and gracious and substantive discussion all over the map from politics to foreign policy. it was a good meeting but i'll also tell you that rudy giuliani is in the mix as well. that's what you should take, talking to the best and brighter across the country. >> you might have been right the first time when you said you

weren't answering my question. i'm saying that politely -- but was the president-elect upset that rudy giuliani appeared to be promoting himself for secretary of state or can you deny that? >> i can deny that. i'm here 15 hours a day -- not at all. rudy has been a great supporter and incredible man and an american hero. and international star. so that's not true. it's a matter of making sure the right decisions are being made. >> reince, we're upset we didn't get asked to host fox and friends at the golf course. it's like one of the most beautiful places i've ever seen. >> it is incredible. unbelievable place. >> one of the other big names he's meeting with today, governor chris christie, help us understand what has been going on as much as you can behind the scenes and he was a big player throughout the entire campaign and leading the transition team and now moved aside.

and talk about a potential cabinet position and what's going on there, is he being looked at for something? >> well, sure, he's a good friend and he's also a great governor and he's been loyal and he's incredibly smart and gifted and talented. so why wouldn't we bring him in and he's been part of the team. so i think obviously, that speaks for itself. and as far as being pushed aside. that's not the case. the reality is, vice president-elect pence is playing a lead role in the transition. he'll play a lead role on capitol hill. everybody loves him in the house and senate. it was only natural for him to lead the process moving forward and chris christie did a great job getting us to this place and still involved and you notice obviously that he's coming in today. >> mr. chairman, a big position open, we see meetings on it yesterday, secretary of defense and general mattis walk out with the president-elect. who's the front runner in that position? >> well, i can't tell you who

the front-runner is but can tell you that we've been very impressed with the folks we've spoken to. tom cotton has come in and others, jack keen and general mattis, another person who brings all americans together, you look at general mad dog mattis and say to yourself, holy smokes, this guy is a leader. one thing that president-elect trump loves are winners and leaders and certainly general mattis is that all in one. >> what do you think about the report suggesting that president obama has been reaching out to the president-elect and saying let's make this as smooth as possible but now there's a report saying after the election he's going to take the gloves off and ready to stay on the stage and attack president-elect trump? >> yeah, that's not consistent with what we're seeing from president obama. he has been gracious. and so has president-elect trump, another indication for

all americans that we have a president-elect that is reaching out across the aisle. they've been having good conversations and they've been all positive. so that's not consistent with what we've been dealing with in regards -- >> do you think the president-elect will fire back if president obama is going to break with tradition andth geor president elect ready to fire back? >> we'll wait and see what happens but i don't think president-elect trump will change who he is. he's not going to sit here and take punches but the truth is that's again, it's not what we're feeling and not what we're seeing from the white house and from dennis mcdone noug and president obama. and so far people should be encouraged. >> big announcement today, any hints there? >> we're not sure. we'll wait and see but certainly everyone should see how hard we're working and bringing people in. it's going to be -- there's going to be more people in and out of here today than there were yesterday and that's good sign for americans. >> thanks for making time for us

administration. >> and as you mentioned, mr. trump had a number of meetings yesterday with outside advisers and potential cabinet picks, including michelle reed, mentioned as a potential pick for education secretary and also met with robert woodson who works on anti-poverty programs and todd ricketts and james mattis, who senior transition officials tell us is a very strong candidate. commander of u.s. central command and oversaw all military operations in iraq and afghanistan until he retired in 2013. after their meeting trump was clearly impressed with mattis. >> we think he's a great guy. he's some great man. we have some things tomorrow i think.
