thanksgiving. a lot to get to right now. let start with peter doocy who is live in palm beach. peter, good afternoon. to we know if ben carson plans to take on a formal role or informal role with the trump administration? >> reporter: we're trying to read the tea leaves, but dr. carson is already explaining why he thinks he would be good at the job of housing and urban development secretary without actually coming out and saying that he's already accepted the position offered by the president-elect. so part of a facebook statement this afternoon from dr. carson says that, quote, after serious discussions with the trump transition team, i feel that i can make a significant contribution particularly to making our inner cities great for everyone. which was of course a focus of several weeks in the summer of trump's campaign. dr. carson has been a long time ally of trump, but the other -- one of the other high profile additions has not been. dr. nikki haley was offered and

accepted ambassador to the u.n. she says when the president believes and you have major contribution to make to the welfare of our nation and to our nation's standing in the world, that is a calling that is important to heed. and in a statement the president calls haley a deal maker, he says that when she's representing the u.s. at the u.n., they will make a lot of deals. >> peter, thank you. so do we know -- i want to ask you about betsy devoss, why he picked her as education secretary? >> she's been pushing for nationwide school vouchers for a long time and the president-elect says that under her leadership, we will reform the u.s. education system and break the bureaucracy that is holding our children back so that we can deliver world class education and school choice to all families. i'm pleased to nominate betsy as secretary of the department of education. she at one time ran the gop in michigan, she's very well-known as being a billionaire, very

involved with charity there. and she soon could be a public servant as the department of education secretary if the senate gives her a thumbs up. >> peter doocy, enjoy that florida weather and happy thanksgiving to you. well, for more on all this, let's bring in chris plant and also chuck rosha, president of solidarity strategies. chris, let's start with you. let's talk about betty devos. she's well-known in michigan republican circles, but also a major advocate for school choice. the nea quickly saying she represents cookie cutter solutions to education reform. she supports vouchers, but interesting she and donald trump don't agree on the issue of common core. so how would they work that one out? >> well, first as for the nea

sending their condemnation out, that i is praise by other means. if you're talk about cookie cutter solutions, they have cookie cutter problems. the ne aechlt doesna doesn't ha stand on because the education nationwide is a disaster. i'm fine with people disagreeing with donald trump on issues, but school choice is a big one creating competition for the government monopoly on education is very important. and the left of course is dead set against all of this. and as conservatives, as americans, choice is good, competition is good, and the school system certainly need as good dose of it. on some other issues, trillion be disagreements. there are big problems, let's fight them out. >> this is a big one, though. chuck, if she is for common core, donald trump is against it, i'm wondering if she pulls donald trump more to her view

point kind of like general matta seems to have done with waterboarding, who will pull who to which side? >> well, she serves at the will of the president. and i think that will be the overarching theme of this. i think that she has been very loyal to her conservative values. i'm not sure that this would be choice of any democrat, but when you're elected president, you get to surround yourself with a team. and it will be interesting to see which way she takes our education system. so when i get the win, you get to pick. >> we've seen donald trump put his arms around people who criticized him. she is one of them. she said i don't think i represents the republican party. and that gets us to our next cabinet level pick, which is -- well, not cabinet level, but am

bats door to t ambassador to the u.n., very important, just came out today nikki haley. what do you think of that selection? >> honestly i think she's a wonderful pick. she's a first generation american, both of her parents immigrated from india, they are very successful. her father is a ph.d., her mother a successful business woman. nickki haley has weathered stor, angered some conservatives and a lot of liberals. i think she's a rising star in american politics. and this will be a great platform for her to show her stuff. i'm looking forward to having her there. >> but that is one heck of a job going before the united nations that does not largely like the united states. we have a lot of big issues on our plate dealing with north korea, russia and syria. so what is it that she's getting herself into? >> i think it will be an tough job. it's a tough job for any american.

and for a democrat, this gives us heartburn to see a very successful woman of color who has ran a state exposing herself to the national level and be working on world events. and you just mark what i say as somebody who has been rubbing c running campaigns for 25 years, she would be the worst nightmare for democrats when she starts to have a national exposure. >> so both giving her the thumbs up. an finally thet tadalai lama sa this about donald trump. listen. >> sometimes i feel during election the candidate have more freedom. once they are elected, having their responsibility, then they have to their vision, their works according to reality. so i am looking forward to

him out it. so the dalai lama may be on to something here. >> chris, chuck, thank you so much and have a terrific thanksgiving. the holiday rush has started as countless americans hit the road for the holiday. early indicators show traffic could be a bit dicey around the country. millions more in fact about a million more americans will be driving this year over the holiday weekend. and lower gas prices could be the reason why. connell mcshane is outside the holland tunnel with that. what can we expect from the roads today? >> reporter: it's already picking up out of new york city as people try to get out into new jersey, beeping their horns in unison and hoping that will help the traffic flow. that has already begun. and the projections from aaa, most people drive. that is the thing that we sometimes forget with all the attention at the airports around a busy travel day like this. about 9 out of 10 drive. and many who have no choice drive at what turns out to be

the worst time. we'll get to that in a moment. but to your point about gas prices, $2.13 is the national average. about 8 cents higher than last year, but gas prices have certainly helped out with travel. i think the projection is like 48.7 million americans will travel for this thanksgiving holiday season, 43.5 million in the car. and google maps has put together some data, i don't know if it helps any of the drivers at the holland tunnel, but it is interesting. of the best and worst times you should be traveling on a holiday weekend like this, and they say here in new york the worst time to travel is like an hour from now, 3:00 eastern time. same thing if we look at the map in atlanta, you go out to the middle of the country, chicago is 5:00, 2:00 in phoenix. and 5:00 out in l.a. so i think the point is hopefully people who are watching us right new are where they're supposed to be because the best place to have been going to where you're going is

like really early this morning like 6:00 in the morning before any of these people got on the road. >> and that is another day off work. i'm seeing a lot of red taillights behind you, so things moving pretty slowly out of manhattan today. and you just heard about the roads. what about the skies? we have every avenue covered for your holiday travel. plus mitt romney reportedly on mr. trump's short list for the secretary of state. and that reportedly has some members of his transition team very uneasy. >> i think the vast majority of trump's supporters will initially be very unhappy and will be reminded of all the things that romney said over the year. and, two, because romney does represent a very different viewpoint authentically.

donald trump. so what do you think about that opponent, about mr. romney potentially being the secretary of state? >> i think it was a little bit of a surprise considering some of the nastiness that went on in the campaign. but i think it really speaks to the character of donald trump. he is definitely putting america first and i wants to surrounds himself with the best people. so i don't know how the interview went, but obviously he is in the running. >> do you sthee as potentially alienating some of his supporters? >> i think trump is leading by example. personally, i didn't understand why so many in the establishment and in leadership roles disavowed trump in the way they did. obviously he was our candidate. that is wouis who we needed to support. so i was highly disappointed at governor romney and some of the others who didn't back trump in the way that they should have, but now moving forward it's about unifying the country, the

party and doing what is best for america. so again, the donald trump that i m in private meetings was this type of person. he is not going to let personal vendettas get in the way of constructive progress. >> and mitt romney certainly has had quite a bit of overseas experience having dealt with the olympic committee and cleaning up that mess years ago. also he correctly highlighted the concern of russia foyer yurs ago and he faced a lot of criticism from obama and the media. is he the right person for the job? >> there are several great choices. romney can bring a lot to the table as can others and i think the team needs to get together and see who they think can best represent us. >> so sounds like you're not completely sold. newt gingrich has been advocating for rudy giuliani. let me ask you about david

petraeus. he was on the bbc saying that he would be ready to serve our nation. listen to this. >> i've been in a position before where a president has turned to me in the oval office in a difficult moment and turned without any pleasant fridays and said i'm asking you as your president and commander in chief to take command of thefridays a said i'm asking you as your president and commander in chief to take command of the forces in afghanistan. the only response can be yes, mr. president. >> do you think general petraeus would be serving under a trump administration? >> one of our great military minds, for question about it. the dealings that i've had with general petraeus, he's very professional and i think with the nature of the last campaign, people are more concerned with results than some of the maybe past indiscretions that they hear about in the news. so there is no tois no doubt ge d petraeus is a brilliant man. >> and you're from chattanooga n and you recently faced a

horrible disaster, five schoolchildren died in that bus accident. we want to express our condolences to the community for that. is there anything that you can tell us that the families need right now? >> their support, their prayers. chattanooga is a community that has dealt with similar tragedies. just a year and a half ago, we had the homegrown terrorist attack that killed five military men and women. so it's a community that knows how to come together and heal. and certainly there is never a good time for something like this, but around the holidays makes it doubly franlgic and all of us who are parents feel deally fdeal deally deeply for these families. but nothing can prepare for you this type of accident. >> we're thinking of those families and praying for them and still children in the hospital, so wishing them a very speedy recovery. congressman, thank you so much for joining us and have a happy thanksgiving. >> you, too. you may already be on your way like the turkey travelers.

goodness, look at that. they are dressed in style. either way, we'll have the latest on airport delays and also some traffic jams. and then a familiar chant heard at trump rallies, lock her up, now the president-elect is saying something else entirely that has his democrat rivals, well, thrilled. but not everyone on the right agrees.

the world's tallest water

slide will be torn down after a deadly accident took place over the summer. the water park in kansas city says it will slow tclose the ri have it mismantled once the investigation is complete and that something will be built to replace the slide. take a look at this, airports across the country revving up for a record number of travelers this holiday weekend. it is projected to be the busiest thanksgiving since 2007 with some 27 million people flying. adam shapiro is live in new jersey. how are things looking there today? >> reporter: i'm going to tell you, if you have to get out of dodge and you happen to be flying out of new york liberty and on united, you're in luck. do you see anyone in line? of course not. now, the line is here, we just can't show you. tchl tsa and the port authority

doesn't want to us show you the security area. but the line is less than 30 minutes to get through tsa. so that is a good sign. however, there are lines across the country as you would expect because so many millions of americans are going to be flying. the 27 million expected to fly over a 12 day period which starts before thanksgiving, through the holiday and then after, 49 million americans will be traveling either by car, bus, train or plane according to aaa. 2.about 2.8 million will fly on the sunday after thanksgiving. but the tsa now has automated tsa lines. you still go through security, but the carts in which you dump all your stuff come through an automated system which speeds the line up in atlanta as much as 30 minutes off your wait time. but again here at newark liberty, i'm watch taking line over there and it is literally people going through in less than 30 minutes. that is a good sign. one other thing, if you're

coming to the new york area, we have two of the five busiest airports in the country. if you're flying into laguardia, you're better off walking. what a mess that is. >> then i'm glad you're in new jersey then. by the way people returning home, what are they saying about how bad in a might be? >> the return home is going to be because you have so many people on one day either driving or flying. in the congested areas around chicago, los angeles, new york metropolitan area a, that will be a nightmare if you're in the car. 2.8 million people just on sunday.a nightmare if you're in car. 2.8 million people just on sunday. a lot of people and a lot of peanuts to be handing out on the airlines. >> i like staying home this year. thank you. after saying he would put her in jail, a post election donald trump is having second thoughts about prosecuting hillary clinton. but not everyone agrees. we'll talk to a former u.s.

major issue this weekend. at least perhaps in some smarts of the country. rick reichmuth has the forecast. north versus south? >> i'm in one of those bad driving states. i can't believe it. but -- actually, i've driven there so i do believe it. but weather is so often so good in arizona, why people live there. we have troubles on you beingut west. a couple systems will bring rain and snow. we won't complain about it, the west has had the drought forever. any kind of moisture we can get at the beginning here of rainy season is all good news. here across parts of the lower mississippi river valley into the ohio river valley, we have the other storm. looks worse on radar than it is. and the snow not that bad either. i think that we'll probably see maybe 3 to 5 inches of snow being a could you please lating for a few spots northern wisconsin in towards the u.p. of michigan. and airport delays, we have a little bit of a delay in newark

and l.a.x. just due to volume. the northeast is good. chicago is fine. atlanta, the other big airport looking good. here is what happens with this storm. most of the energy moves toward the north. unfortunately, not getting the precipitation to the south. but this will cause a little bit of delays at least on the roids around parts of the western great lakes and ohio valley today. and tomorrow, that system moves a little bit towards the east. so we might see a delay around chicago later on, some delays in the pacific northwest. tomorrow mostly driving, problems out across the west coast with those storms moving on in. and the east, the storm will pull off across the east coast, so scattered showers, a little bit of drizzle. nothing that should cause any big problems. but will just get you in the mood for what is coming the day after thanksgiving which is christmas. >> and we'll talk about that one another time. rick reichmuth, thank you so in

promise to prosecute hillary clinton sparking uproar among many conservatives. reince priebus explaining that prosecuting her and the clinton foundation simply not a top priority. >> i'm sure if something comes around that is some kind of, you know, bomb that we don't know about, we'll have to take a look at it. but his point is he's looking forward to leading this country, he's not looking to further injure the clintons. >> judicial watch taking major issue with that stating, quote, president-elect trump should focus on healing the broken justice system, affirm the rule of law and appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the clinton scandals. with me now former prosecutor. joe, welcome. we talked about three weeks ago about this very subject and at the time you felt strongly that the department of justice should see through this investigation as should the fbi. where are you today?

>> well, it's a governance decision trump has made. i believe that the rule of law has been left aside by this justice department with loretta lynch and i believe that the way it to deal with the rule of law now is to clean house at the department of justice. but donald trump has made a decision that he wants to be magnanimous. mrs. xlclinton is an undeservin recipient, but i respect donald trump's decision. he doesn't want his presidency to be touched by the tawdry resid sue up of the clinton criminality and they should count her blessing. but i respect the president's decision. i think it's a good one. and as reince priebus said, if new information comes up, i'm sure the president can change his mind. but to use the chief law -- >> joe, to those who know you and you had served as independent counsel, prosecutor. you're a guy who likes to follow the rule of the law.

putting politics aside for a second, why is it not important to investigate a potential -- well, the investigation is still continuing, but why is it not to prioritize a pay to play allegation from the clinton foundation? >> well, first of all, i agree with that. and i'm not sure that the clinton foundation is not still under investigation. we cannot tell from the public statements made by either president-elect trump or kellyanne conway or anybody else what is still under investigation. for example, bill clinton took $6.2 million from foreign corporations that had business before the state department while his wife was secretary of state. as far as i'm concerned, those were bribs. they should be investigated. the companies that gave the money should be investigated and so should former president clinton. but that is a decision for trump to make and i respect his decision. but i would go forward. >> let me ask you about this. why not then name an independent counsel, somebody who would step in independently, take charge of it, so that donald trump doesn't have to weigh in on it?

>> i would accept that. i would prefer that. that would be my choice if i were president. but let me just say this. this is what trump said yesterday, that he doesn't want to do this. i am not one who thinks that he might not change his mind and decide after talking with a few people that at least he can just appoint a special counsel and then get out of it. but make no mistake about it, he's the chief law enforcement officer and this is his decision. but i personally would favor an independent counsel. >> congress still has a role in this and congressman chaffetz said that congress could find something and then what happens? >> well, obviously we'll have a new justice department. the one that we have now is politically corrupt. loretta lynch, sally yates, all of these people who have thrown these cases away by not investigating them properly and thoroughly. we'll have a flew group of people at the justice department. if jason chaffetz and them find

evidence of perjury and make new referrals, i'm certain that the justice department will investigate them now. i don't think there is any doubt about that. >> let me ask you lastly, i know you still have contacts over at the fbi and at the department of justice. what is their take on donald trump's recent switch of position? >> the people at the fbi are -- this is the lowest morale in history that i've ever seen. they want comey to be gone. they think president trump should ask for comey's resignation and they want the new fbi director to be ray kelly, former police commissioner of new york who they believe is honest, full of integrity and would never cave. >> all right. joe, thank you so much for joining us. have a wonderful thanksgiving and safe travels to you. >> thank you. north carolina governor pat mckcrory demanding a recount in the battle to stay in office. his campaign filing papers for the recount as election

no way i'm cutting this habit cold turkey. that was pretty funny. thanksgiving is a chance to gather with loved ones, reflect on our many blessings and after a long campaign season finally turn our attention from polls to poultry. this year we're honored to be joined by two of the lucky ones who were raised by the domino family in iowa. tater and tot. tater is here in a backup role just in case tot can't fulfill his duties. so he's sort of like the vice turkey. we're working to getting him a pair of aviator glasses. and it is my great privilege,

well, my privilege, actually let's just say it's my job to grant them clemency this afternoon. as i do, i want to take a moment to recognize the brave turkeys who weren't so lucky who didn't get to ride the gravy train to freedom, who met their fate with courage and sacrifice and proved that they weren't chicken. [ crying baby ] >> it's not that bad now. come on. of course we have a lot to be thankful for this thanksgiving. six straight years of job creation, the longest streak ever. low unemployment, wages are rising again and equality is narrowing. the housing market is maling. the stock market has nearly tripled. high school graduation rate is at an all-time high and our uninsured straight an all-time low thanks to the 20 million americans who finally know the security of health insurance.

proud families -- [ applause ] >> that's worth gobbling about. proud families across the country are finally complete now that merge equality is the law of the land and there are many families of service members who had empty chairs at the table in recent years but who in this thanksgiving can celebrate with our brave troops and veterans whom we've welcomed home. thanksgiving is also reminder of the source of our national strength, that out of many we are one, that we're bound not by any one race or religion, but rather by adherence to a common creed, that all of us are created equal, and while accepting our differences and building a diverse society, it has never been easy or more important. we are a people that look out for one another and get each other's backs. we keep moving forward, defined by values and ideals that have

been alike to all humanity. we have to see ourselves in each other because we all have families that we love and hopes for their better future. and we lose sight of that sometimes and thanksgiving is a good time for us to remember that. we have a lot more no common than divides us. the holidays are also a time when it's more important to reach out to those who needjudge care for the sick, elderly, immigrant, refugee, everybody trying to get a second chance. i believe that in order to truly live up to those ideals, we have to continually fight discrimination in all its forms and always show the world that america is a generous and giving country. we should also make sure everyone has something to eat on thanksgiving. of course except the turkeys because they're already stuffed. so later today, the -- so later

today, the obama family will participate in our traditional thanksgiving service project and when somebody at your table tells that you you've been hogging all the side dishes and you can't have more, i hop you respond with the creed that sums up a spirit of hungry people. yes, we cran. that was good. you don't think that's funny? look, i know there are some bad ones in here, but this is the last time i'm doing this, so we're not leaving any room for leftovers. let me just say -- how am i doing, good? thumbs up? let me just say one last thing before i spare these turkeys' lives. so this thanksgiving, i want to express my sincere gratitude to the american people for the trust that you've placed in me over these last eight years and

commutation. >> there are two people on the radar he may or may not pardon before the days are up. one is headward snowden. edward snowden. and the other is hillary clinton. ed snowden has been charged with certain crimes. hillary clinton has not. we're talking about the former nsa contractor who leaked a bunch of information. he says he should be pardoned because he provided the world with a benefit. >> i think the president disagrees, but the president is getting around the issue of whether or not he should be pardoned, the president doesn't believe he had the authority to pardon ed snowden and i think the president is wrong there. >> maybe he is trying to mislead supporters because his supporters like the idea of pardoning him. they were against the whole nsa leak. so prison commutations, we have a bunch of drug offenders. the president calls them non-violent. tell that to any family facing drug addiction. >> the truth is those who had
