hello, i'm kimberly guilfoyle. it's 5:00 in new york city and this is "the five." ♪ a lot of news on the trump transition front. the president-elect has picked kc mac far land to be his national security adviser and don mcgahn as white house counsel. more on that later. first a heated battle is brewing about the secretary of state position. former massachusetts governor mitt romney is being considered for the job but some of the president-elect's closest supporters are expressing concerns about romney pointing to his sharp criticism of mr.
2:01 pm
trump during the election. kellyanne conway weighed in on twitter. kissinger and schultz flew around the world less, counseled po us the close to home more and were loyal. good checklist. >> he probably needs to say it more publically. a lot of the strife would dissipate at that point. what i love about the president-elect is that he's got a bridge open to everybody in the community. he sent a message to us at the executive transition level that we want a plus plus players on the team and governor romney is a player. >> communications are afoot. what do you make of the mixed messages, the press saying there is internal conflict over there. specifically hard-core trump loyal is saying this isn't someone you should pick. then you have the rudy camp, mitt camp. >> one of the things that's different is this is not done

behind-the-scenes. not like they are back stabbing. they are on the record saying this. that's a different way too do things. not like they are hiding their true feelings. they're on the record. if you tweet or go on fox news and say things, you are trying to weigh in. what i would imagine is that kind of argumentation is encouraged from the top. if donald trump were worried about them arguing it would stop. i imagine he's okay with it. >> he may want to see how people react. there is an understand blg reflection from the folks that have been pro trump to someone like romney who trashed him for so long. now he has the opportunity. i think it speaks to the president-elect. this is a guy who made decisions about moving out. governor christie, bringing in pence. he picked flynn and sessions. on this one he's probably

conflicted. he had a good meeting with romney. felt he was a smart guy but is loyal to rudy giuliani. then hears names lick general petraeus and kelly. he's probably saying i have a little bit of time. >> can i float on interesting theory. i don't know if i subscribe to it. >> it's friday. >> it's friday. i'm throwing it out. >> it's the holidays. >> it's possible he's leaving romney out there to dangle and be killed by a thousand cuts because romney was unkind to him, in his view, during the election. the reason is to make romney appear he's groveling for a job he never has any intention of giving mitt romney and he's having other people come out and talk about what a horrible human being mitt romney was to the president-elect and the president-elect knows he won't choose romney but romney is jumping through hoops to get the job. others like rudy giuliani aren't

acceptable. i don't think mitt romney will get the jo. i hope i'm wrong. >> it's the art of war lately. >> interesting theory but is he jumping through hoops? romney went in, took a meeting. >> he hasn't said anything. i don't think he should apologi apologize. he probably thought this is why i'm willing to work with him now. >> if he takes a job the first will be to set a confirmation hearing. governor romney, why did you think donald trump was unfit to be president of the united states and the horrible names you called him he has to say something that sounds like an apology. what has changed?
2:05 pm
why go to bed minister and shake the hand to try to interview with a man who's unqualified to be commander in chief. >> what's the answer? >> easy. if romney was himself and said this is what i think -- well, i don't know. i haven't talked to him or anybody on the team. it looked like a moment of patriotic grace. he won. in a fashion that i couldn't. if i believe in public service and governor romney does, he could come up with something that says, fine. he could answer all the questions in a confirmation hearing. have the democrats read it. now say i'm ready to serve. >> is that enough for an apology? >> i have no problem. >> i could do it.
2:06 pm
>> the department of interior wants all the parts. >> if you gave me the communication challenge and i believed it. it's not hard to do a press conference like that if you believe what i said. >> he could have that come across but donald trump is giving patriotic grace back to him. this is a guy who two and a half weeks in realize it is gravity, understands the gravity. someone trashed him. he wants to make america great again and be strong on the world stage. if he feels mitt romney is the guy to do it i think he's putting these things aside, willing to listen. >> i hope you're right. i do. >> can i make another point? i think donald trump is showing in this transition process a willingness to make that big

tent of the republican party a real thing. say you're donald trump and there are people uncomfortable with me. how can i solidify a bigger tent for the most support going forward for the presidency. bringing somebody like romney in. i think actually having him come by was worth it. he has a lot to offer the country for sure. why wouldn't you? if you're sincere and genuine and i believe he is about unifying the country, doing what he said he would do you want the best with you. spimt neutralized romney from the future. >> it's the right thing to do. it remains to be seen if he's going to give him a position. >> the rules are different. wouldn't say it about rubeo or cruz. the rules are different. they are holding romney to a

>> the communication to the japanese which is to say, yeah, okay. the campaign was the campaign. we're good japan. everything is okay. a moment of stability with allies. if that means mitt romney helps and they can help, great. it is interesting how quickly they could go with very strong campaign rhetoric. >> once you have the job you can see what the situation is. he's been getting the briefings and met with president obama. great to unify. >> we have heard kshs that mitt romney's are different. >> like russia. >> a guy with that stature with that known entity as your secretary of state you can get in front of the president a little bit. we have seen it where secretary of states are rogue or have a different position.

>> you don't know until she writes her book after she left. you can have a different position but carry through. >> with rudy giuliani he was the front runner for it. obviously trump loyalists are strong. we saw newt gingrich's comments as well. excellent background. a lot on foreign policy in terms of his experiences. what do you think of that choice? >> donald trump would be comfortable with him. that may not be what donald trump is looking for. maybe he does want to look for challenges. not that rudy giuliani wouldn't provide policy challenges. i think he would be tireless in his efforts. i think the signals they are getting from the hill is that the con miles an hour medication process wouldn't be as easy as they would like.
2:11 pm
>> if the president-elect had his choice he could put rudy giuliani in. >> i don't think donald trump is afraid to fight with the congress for nominees. he has to fight for some. sessions probably. i think it will be easier than we think. he has colleagues including chuck schumer from both sides. he'll have several fights with the democrats, for example, his supreme court nomination. how many fights. >> you pick your battles. the art of war. >> what do you think about the rudy giuliani. >> he would be a strong choice. you may face resistance in the congress. >> potentially democrat support. because they would acknowledge that elections have consequences. if this is who trump wants it's time to abide by that. >> i would sleep well at night. coming up, the latest developments on president-elect trump's new appointments to the administration when "the five" returns.

new selections today. k.t. macfarland you have seen here has been chosen as the deputy national security add vieszer and donald mac gahn, general counsel for trump's campaign has been tapped for white house counsel. retired lieutenant general mike flynn reacted to k.t.'s news on twitter saying, so proud and honored to have kt as part of the national security team. she'll help us make america great again. president trump will meet with eight people including milwaukee county sheriff david clark and is expected to select billionaire investor wilbur ross as the commerce secretary. kimberly, to you. news coming out they won't add more cabinet picks until monday. what do you make of the pick of macfarland? >> i love it. she's fantastic. i pause, listen, make sure to turn up the volume when she's speaking. she's knowledgeable. she has an amazing family that served the country faithfully
2:17 pm
including her daughters and the navy. really bright. gets national security. i feel very comfortable with her in that position. she served under president ronald reagan. she's been able to enjoy wide support and praise from all those that know her. this is a strong pick, one i would have made. >> when i look at it in combination with michael flynn, looks like the reagan realists are back. she was part of the weinberg doctrine which was a corner stone of reagan's approach, less interventionist. the white house counsel pick is a name of someone who's experienced in republican politics for a long time. being the white house counsel for donald trump you have been in the white house in that position. what will that mean? >> donald mac gahn was a campaign finance attorney at jones day. if he has that experience that's a huge check mark of you need that type of person. >> he's been vetted. >> because he's a campaign lawyer and a transition lawyer,
2:18 pm
he probably won't be surprised by many things. even the other day when donald trump was -- i'm sorry. the "new york times" interview and they were asking him about possible conflicts of interest you could see him saying, there is not a lot of clarity here on some of the things. so he will have to rely on don macgahn. that's a good pick. if i could say one thing about kt macfarland, one of the things people don't realize necessarily is the national security counsel one of your responsibilities is that counsel coordinates amongst all the national security agencies. you have a lot of constituencies. as you know, dod, state department, cia, dni, they don't always agree. >> they don't? >> you have to take everybody's input, go to the president with the decision-making -- with the decision, ask him, go back. make sure everybody is okay. i feel kt is a good person to help with that. she's a clear communicator,
2:19 pm
somebody who i think is a diplomat at heart. that's also a good choice. >> his national security team is forming. from your perspective, from the outside looking in what do you make of it? >> i love kt. i second what you said about her. the nice thing is she's temperamentally suited to a job like this. michael flynn, there are questions about his temperament, questions about how he can work across all sorts of different national security interests to have a cohesive message. i feel kt could balance that out. >> yeah. she's not just somebody who's been around washington a long time. so has michael flynn. she's fit for this kind of role. i hope she has some influence on her boss, michael flynn, to do that. kt is a real liist in conversations. a realist about russia which i consider to be a huge strategic threat. michael flynn has backed off on
2:20 pm
that because of his business interests with russia and other interests with russia. i hope she'll inject realism i know she has about that part of the world into the national security conversation. >> she has experience but is willing to look at the world through clear eyes and adjust. not everyone is willing and able to do that. >> she's traveled extensively as well. not just theorizing. she's been overseas. she's done the hard work, met with the leaders. she provided a lot of good communication. i think she's the best choice for the job. what i love about this pick is she was chosen because of the qualifications and extreme competency not because of her gender. that's the point. >> just a couple of days ago we were reading this is disarray. does it look like it to you? >> it is disarray on my show. kt mcfarland, when i heard the news, kt is the most respectable person ever to appear on my show. >> i take huge exception to
2:21 pm
that. i have been on your show many times. >> i was never asked. >> she's very high level. she loves coming on the show. i opened my phone, outlook, cancelled. she was supposed to be on monday. >> she couldn't wait to announce it? >> the rules should wait for red eye. that's the way it is. >> she's great. from the very beginning she's been on the show all year. she took trump seriously from the outset. when other panelists were laughing she said, don't laugh about donald trump. she he's coming. >> right. >> i had conversations with her early on. she was very thoughtful saying, listen to what he's saying and what people are frustrated about and the policies pursued in the past. david clark coming on monday. >> for an interview? >> lots of them making it into the building. what do you make of it? >> i don't know what he's looking at. there are law enforcement positions. there are great jobs you haven't even heard of yet that could be
2:22 pm
filled by position that is don't necessarily need senate confirmati confirmation. they are casting a wide net with people they know. >> absolutely. >> he's bringing in clark. clark was a big supporter from the beginning. he got national attention. he's a straight shooter, straight talker. i'm curious. given all the positions they have there would be something good. >> put him on the wall. >> you never know. >> he's a strong law enforcement supporter. >> he's casting a wide net of people he watches on this network. >> everybody mentioned -- no one called me. >> stand by the phone. will ber ross for commerce secretary. registered democrat. >> i like this pick. >> interesting pick as well. more news on that coming. president trump under fire for receiving only two classified intelligence briefings so far. his team responds to the critics when we respond.
2:27 pm
as we see mr. trump's team is disputing the report. his team said the president-elect is focused on the transition and still has time to get up to speed on the international affairs and security threats facing the nation. meantime with headlines in the news today on isis, russia and iran should president-elect trump put more focus on the briefings? i will come to you, dana. >> i don't know how many briefings he's had. i noticed the trump transition team pushed back saying this is coming from the intelligence community that has their noses bent out of shape because they didn't get jobs in the administration they wanted. i don't know if there is time to have assessed whether intel community people should have had
2:28 pm
jobs or not. i would hope that cooler heads could prevail for both sides because the president need it is trust of the intelligence community and vice versa. he's been getting briefings for a while. that will step up. the weight of the job requires it. >> do you know what's interesting? his people pushed back and said he's talking to foreign leaders. some sort of briefing. that's not the president's daily brief. that's him talking to foreign leaders for their assessment of what's going on. >> talking to foreign leaders is important. relationships are important. the first two countries you talked to in israel and the uk are a priority. >> he talked to teresa may, by the way. >> it is what it is. it's silly to say donald trump isn't taking national security seriously. >> it's not rooted in fact. you don't know if he's getting the briefing on his ipad as president obama did.
2:29 pm
president obama is in charge. he's potus until the transition. i would like you to know mike pence is receiving briefings daily and we would assume diskuging it with the president and the president-elect has promised to implement many policies within the first hundred days. he can't do it if he doesn't have people in place. it's a mix. you have to take it all into account. once again the washington post running away with it saying he's turning away is inaccurate. >> what he said to be clear, their pushback was essentially saying, well, these are disgruntled people saying this. not necessarily is fact that he's only had two are inaccurate. they are not disputing that at all. what do you think? >> they are disputing -- even the headline of the article that said he was turning away these -- catherine harris said a lot of other presidents-elect haven't started until november or december. that's a fact. >> late november. >> the article essentially is just an opinion, a perspective. they are saying he's not
2:30 pm
starting these soon enough. >> opinion for the main stream media again. >> i'm sorry. let me ask you -- >> let me say this. it doesn't trouble you whatsoever that he has no foreign policy experience at all and unlike -- >> does it probably you that president obama doesn't sit in on his daily briefingings and gets it on his ipad? >> he was a senator. >> on the battlefield when you transition there is instability. the vulnerabilities of this moment are largely of obama's making. set it aside he's weakened us. donald trump has to restore america's credibility in the world. he has limited experience in foreign affairs per se. that's why his big priority is the transition team and building the team which is what he's said in the articles as his primary pushback. let me talk to michael flynn, bring in kt mcfarland. you think he's not talking to those people about national security issue? he builds the team based on priorities. >> and mattis. >> to think he's not taking
2:31 pm
national security seriously is foolish. these are articles out there trying to discredit him, make him look small in an orderly otherwise process. >> i assume the president has more to deal with at any one time. shouldn't he also make room for this and other important things? >> it is true that president obama has come under criticism from the intelligence community about the president's daily brief. the whole issue is one where he referred to read it sometimes rather than meet with people. if you are in the intelligence community and the director of national intelligence is in charge of finding the right person to do the daily briefing. that's important. >> i remember the guy there for the second term of the bush white house. he was so wonderful. he was a genius. he traveled with us and would do briefings in the morning. he would be exactly what the president needs in terms of communication. i imagine in the intelligence community they are trying to
2:32 pm
figure out who that person would be that would be the best person to brief donald trump for the style he wants to be briefed in. >> finding the right running shoe. >> if you are complaining about obama not wanting briefings -- >> it's november 26. >> they are not thinking he doesn't want them. he's prioritizing certain things and has access to them. >> maybe it's just me that thinks he should prioritize foreign policy. we go inside a new book and a special guest joins us, too. don't go away.
