sandra: fox news alert. ohio state saying shelter in place warning has been lifted and scene is secure after reports of an active shooter on campus. the fire department says seven people were rushed to the hospital. latest reports two are in stable condition. no word on the others. after osu, one of america's largest universities, incident a series of tweets telling students to healther in place, and quote, run, hide, fight. correspondent rob schmitt joins us live from the newsroom. we're getting word the situation is secure but we're still waiting to hear anything about this shooter and his motive. reporter: sandra, so many conflicts reports at this point. we're not sure if we're dealing with one suspect here or more than one. we're not sure if the suspect or suspects are dead at this point. we've heard an array of conflicting reports. we can tell you the most important thing as you said the scene is now over, it's secure.
9:01 am
i shouldn't say over, but it is secure. the shelter in place has been ended. you can now leave where you are if you've been hiding from this. and saying that the scene is secure and everything is safe now. that is the most important thing especially for parent watching on television to see if they're okay. if you're talking to them, now everything, according to police that everything is safe. massive campus on north side of columbus, ohio, 60,000 students go to this school. it's a huge big 10 school. we have had reports of a suspect opening fire. we have had reports of a suspect driving a car or two suspects in a car, driving a vehicle into a crowd of people outside of a hall. we have read things like a fire alarm was pulled. all of this unconfirmed. we've had reports of a knife being used in this attack as well. right now we can tell you that your number of seven people taken to the hospital may or may not be correct. it may be eight at this point. we're not sure.
9:02 am
but it is somewhere in that area there. we heard reports of one person in critical condition. of a vehicle running down people. this happening at watts hall, which is materials, science and engineering building. the shelter in place has now been lifted. classes have been canceled for the rest of the day you but sounds like it was just mayhem at this watts hall on the north side of the campus earlier, later this morning i should say when this all rang out. some students reported hearing something like a bomb going off. so again just an array of reports coming in at this time and i think what is going to happen as police start to speak to the media, now that the scene is secured we'll get definitive answer what is happened here f there was a vehicle involved. if we have two suspects or one. we have seen reports saying that the suspects have been arrested. we have reported that a suspect has been killed. that has come out from a number of different news agencies from that area.
9:03 am
of course all of this still unconfirmed at this time but we do know something big has happened here and that a number of students have been injured and taken to a number of, couple local hospital there is at ohio state in central ohio, as you see the split screen there. campus should hopefully, start to calm down a little bit. classes were canceled. latest. we'll send it back to you. sandra: rob, also the emergency management system osu still tweeting out instructions to students the areas that are closed around campus, the buildings that are closed. additional information is yet to be offered. what are you hearing about the ability for students to reach out to their parents, reach out to anybody trying to get in touch with them? where are we at as far as coordinated efforts with the police, with the students and their ability to let everybody know they're safe on campus as this situation is clearly ongoing? reporter: you're wondering if that facebook, safety alert
9:04 am
facebook has has been set up. we're not certain of that. the cell phone is the best bet. they said don't call the police department trying to find out if your kids are safe or if someone you know is safe because that ties up the phone lines. they needed that at the time to manage the situation here. if you have any information that could help them figure out what is going on the campus this is disorienting thing on this campus. this is a massive campus. a lot of people all in one place. they're trying to figure out what is going on. they're trying to secure it. sandra: rob, thank you very much. we have new information. we want to go to rod wheeler, former d.c. homicide detective very familiar with the investigation as it continues. we're now learning 10 people have been transported to the local hospital there. one of those people are listed in critical condition. rod wheeler, how would you describe the situation right now? >> well, right now i would clearly describe the situation as being contained. the police department is actually tweeted out that the situation is under control. what does that mean?
9:05 am
that just simply means they do believe if there was more than one suspect they no longer believe that. there is just one individual. some reports are saying that that the one individual was killed by police. a lot of this is unconfirmed. i can tell you and the viewers it appears the area around watts hall, a area i'm familiar with, 19th and college avenue, so viewers know. north side of the campus. it is very easy for people to drive on the university campus from on the street, so that you know that. it isn't one of the areas that is really contained. it is an area anybody can drive on to the police. massive police response of the columbus police department, osu police department and franklin county sheriff's department did a tremendous job getting in there. they practiced for this type of situation and appears they have taken it under control. sandra: do we know anything about the shooter or shooters or the suspects involved in this? we really don't have much to report on that front.
9:06 am
is that unusual at this point in the investigation? >> no. right, that is an excellent question, sandra, and no, it is not unusual. here is the thing, in these active shooter situations you get so much information from various sources. some people say one shooter, two shooters, some people say it was a knife, a gun. in a situation like this the best thing to do is wait until the investigators get in there. the investigators right now are interviewing victims of the situation, they're interviewing other students. they're trying to determine whether or not the shooter was a student at university or maybe somebody that wandered on to the campus. these are all unanswered questions. we'll have answers probably before the end of today. sandra: what does that investigation look like? we're looking at images of this campus. you can imagine these are students ho just returned from their thanksgiving holiday weekend with their families. >> right. sandra: they get back to campus. this happens. i can imagine it is a chaotic
9:07 am
scene. what does the investigation look like on campus at this point? are they shutting things down completely for some time? >> well the entire campus, all of the classes have been canceled for today. i have relatives, nieces and nephews that attend ohio state currently. i'm an alumni of ohio state. i had classes when i went to ohio state in watts hall. to give a perspective the area, there is a lot of students around the area be so clams room buildings in that area. it is not unusual to have a large number of people in that area. what i'm a little surprised by if a gun was used in the situation, sounds is like it was, more people wasn't hurt. i guess the good news in all of that is the response by the police department. the investigators, their first responsibility is to try to determine who was the shooter, where did he get the weapons, what was his motivation and whether or not there may be any other victims out there, maybe at another crime scene or something like that, so that is the the typical way we investigate these case, sandra.
9:08 am
sandra: okay. also coming into our newsroom in addition what we're learning from the fire department that 10 people have been sent to the hospital and one listed in critical condition, this just coming in according to the columbus fires department, the suspect is deceased and the body is still at the scene. again that is just coming in. rod, your thoughts with that coming in? >> sounds like the individuals that were taken to the hospital were probably taken to the ohio state university hospital. now why is that important? the hospital, sandra, is only about three to four blocks away from watts hall. that is very critical. not only that, but the osu hospital is a level-one trauma center. which means they have everybody on duty, ready for these types of situations. as a matter of fact, just this past saturday, they were already staged and prepared for mass casualties because of the major football game we just had there. so that is good news in all of this. the fact that the suspect is at the scene sounds to me like the police took him out right away and they got rid of that threat
9:09 am
and everyone at that point became safe. sandra: rod, this is something that universities across this country are having to prepare for and do prepare for actively. >> that's right. sandra: from what you have seen today, how have the efforts of the university working with local police, how has that played out? >> you know, i think from my perspective, and i actually teach a course in active shooters for colleges and for students, i'll tell you from what i saw, i've been following this all day, the police there did a tremendous job. their response was excellent. but i'll tell you one other thing real quickly, sandra, not enough college campuses prepare for situations like this. they need to. they need to work with the local police. they need to work with security representatives and they need to prepare for situations like this because what it will do, it will save lives at the end of the day. i think that is what we saw here today at ohio state. my alma mater. they saved a lot of lives. sandra: rod, i want everybody to know, i will report once again, that the columbus fire department is reporting that a suspect is in custody.
9:10 am
the suspect is he deceased and the body is still at the scene. kennedy wants to jump in with a question. kennedy: unfortunately we learn a lot from these unfortunate mass casualties, do you learn something like this where the police response and response where the school has been successful as you do from incidents like virginia tech? >> unfortunately, we learn from the worst situations obviously. virginia tech, washington navy yard, you know what we try to do, kennedy? we try to learn from the situations and improve upon them in case this situation happens again. so looking at situation today, to be specific we learned a lot about our response as a police department, working with the students, working with the faculty, so that if this situation were to happen again, and hopefully it won't but it robly will, our response will be better and lives will be saved. >> rod, it is pete hegseth. got a quick question. >> hey, pete.
9:11 am
>> i heard reports from a friend in columbus, from a trusted source that it was a vehicle running people over and potentially a knife and a weapon as well. if that were to be the case, that is speculation, unconfirmed reports is the type of attack tell us about motive or who might be? is there anything we can glean from what we know right now about motive or approach on this attack? >> you know that is an excellent question, pete. i can tell you at this point we really don't want to speculate too much because we need to wait and see exactly what happened. some people say there were gunshot victims. one thing i can tell you real quickly, pete, on the north side of ohio state campus there is a lot of ways on to the campus grounds. anybody from the street or from the city can come on to the campus. a lot of dormitories are right there on the campus in that area. so i think at this point it is better to wait until we get all the facts to learn exactly what happened. i don't want to speculate too much on that aspect, pete. sandra: rod, i don't want to look too much into the wording
9:12 am
of this but perhaps could reveal something, maybe not. the wording from the police, the fire department, a suspect is deceased and body is still at the scene. at this point we can't rule out there is more than one suspect? >> that is exactly right. that is exactly we as investigators look at. i know we don't have a lot of time, the other victim transported to was one or more of them involved in this, which don't know yet. was there another crime scene somewhere, we don't know that yet. if a vehicle was used it could indicate this is somewhat of a personal attack someone had. we don't know if it was a student or somebody in the community. again, at this stage, since the suspect is down we don't need to speculate. let's wait to see exactly hot person was and why they carried out what they decided to carry out. sandra: after reports of an active shooter at the ohio state university in columbus, hire. >> that's right.
9:13 am
sandra: rod wheeler, thank you for your time and jumping in on the breaking news. >> sure. sandra: at that the suspect is dead, a suspect is dead and still at scene. 10 have been transported to area hospital. one victim in critical condition. we learned nine others are in stable condition. all this after a shelter in place warning has now been lifted at the university. that all happening at ohio state university today, one of the largest universities in this country. all right, we'll jump you now, we're going to go to break. for lower back pain sufferers,

state of minnesota they decided they will not play for middle america. they will not try to win back the working class voter, white, brown, black or otherwise, doesn't matter. that is dealing with the economy we're in right now, that donald trump has spoken to. right now they're going through the crisis republicans went through before and they're shading toward going further left which would make them much more of a coast party than they already are right now. meghan: i find some liberals i know have such a disdain for the middle of the country. i'm not surprised they're represented by people only on the coasts and massachusetts. dagen: great unwashed. sandra: fox news alert. we have word that the president of ohio state university is stepping up to a microphone. let's listen. >> our thoughts and prayers and hopes and wishes for speedy recovery for all those injured. we prepare for situations like this but always hope never to have one. so we're going to be able to visit people injured a little later on this afternoon. i want to tell them all and their families how much we are

community there was an emergency. many officers from various different jurisdictions all over the county and outside of the county responded immediately. by 11:00 a.m. the shelter in place notification was lifted. and law enforcement personnel in the area continue to investigate multiple other things. there are a you few buildings that are still closed. we don't have any reports of anything else. we believe that the threat was ended when the officer engaged the suspect. very fortunate that an osu-pd officer was there and took action and we believe injuries were minimized as a result of that. we'll probably continue to have an active crime scene throughout the rest of the day. we'll have more updates for you later on those things. we do have a few buildings just shut down as a precaution as we go through and sweep those but we do believe the threatened right when the officer engaged the suspect. >> like to have andy thomas come
