diplomatic crisis in taiwan. trump risks show down with china after call with taiwan. >> chris murphy tweeting this, what has happened the last 48 hours is not a shift. these are major pivots in foreign policy without any plan, that's how wars start. donald trump defending. this this was just a phone call. she called me to congratulate me on becoming president of the united states. it was a simple, nice phone call. he said this the president of taiwan called me today to wish me congratulations on winning the presidency. he also congratulated her on becoming the president. >> he also noted in the second tweet how the u.s. sells taiwan billions of dollars of military equipment but i should not accept a congratulatory call? china isn't recognized. taiwan is independent island. taiwan wants more freedom from china. it's very complicated. >> we defended their sovereignty in the past. a guy like chris maury i murphye fancies himself as -- he is

the president-elect. taking phone calls from world leaders. not going to start world war iii. having a conversation with people reaching out to him. >> i spent a lot of time living over in beijing. i think everyone needs to calm down. an example of what has played out the entire campaign. the minute donald trump does something a little different than someone in the past which is also one of the reasons people like mr. trump. they go on this frnsy and make it sound like this world is coming to an end starting world war 3. let me clarify we are not going to war. nothing is probably going to happen from. this if anything, i think many people find this sort of thing refreshing from president-elect donald trump. you think about taiwan and their values and how they are much more lioned up with american values. that being said, is he not sworn in yet. better understanding of china, taiwan. it is a very delicate balance. number one trading partner. >> he was critical of china

throughout the entire campaign. media wants to paint him as a little bit of a loose cannon. going to take phone calls from taiwan now? this is out of control. >> this headline trump sides with free democratic country, small d democratic country communists freak out. in what world is that a bad thing? i understand the trading partner side. they are trying to discredit him which is exactly what it is. he is taking phone calls and engaging in conversation. little bit of uncertain at this and shuffle. is he a negotiator. you don't want china to think you are going to fall into the old patterns. i think that's part of it, too. he is not taking this phone call by accident. receiving, appreciate it, i'm sure. he and his advisors know what they're doing. >> how about when president obama renewed relationships with cuba, remember that recently? was there this hysteria. i always try to put mr. trump in someone's past shoes to get a better sense of hypocrisy. >> let's do that on this next story. >> over the past few days

the carrier story out of indiana has made headlines. interesting to watch how the left has responded to this story. because this is particularly the area where the left praised president obama in sort of picking winners in jobs. >> solyndra. >> picking different solar companies. and the left, i have seen, over the past few days has actually been praising president-elect trump for this move carrier plants. then you have people like sarah palin coming out writing opinion pieces slamming president-elect trump for this move trying to save jobs. saying this is crony capitalism. that the government should not be in the business of picking winners and losers in these sort of back room deals. president-elect trump is at it again with another company this morning. >> no. listen, you can make arguments both ways. and people have. but the reality is donald trump became president-elect and carrier keep jobs here and people like that and want that. they want those jobs here. he tweeted yesterday about another company in indiana which is about a mile down the road from carrier called

rexnord. i believe they manufacture roll herbal bearings of indiana is moving to mexico and rather viciously firing all of its 300 workers. this is happening all over our country. no more. he hasn't talked more about what that's going to mean. the signal is still clear. >> that's right. >> we're going to change the policies and i will interfeign individually with companies to make sure they stay here and to the american worker and people who elected them. >> these 1100 carrier employees this like christmas to them. >> they thought they werelessing their jobs. >> they don't have to worry about losing their jobs and know how they are going to put christmas presents under the tree this year this holiday season. it's interesting to see what sort of deals. is the president-elect going to be doing this all over the country individually with different companies? you have sarah palin saying this is not the president's job to pick out winners and losers. >> you have to figure out the best value. you want to incentivize companies to keep jobs here. you don't want to threaten.

>> but how? because when you look at the company that runs carrier, they have defense contracts. if you going to move these 1100 jobs to mexico, well, you know that defense contract that you were going to be receiving millions of dollars in, that will dry up. >> trump is siding on the side of business not regulation. so what you had with obama before was ideological interest on climate change and regulatory interests that he was focused. it wasn't a pro-business agenda and shoe horning things. trump says i want to open it up and make it competitive. i want to make sure rexnord and carrier have a competitive environment so they don't go to to mexico and pay 2.50 an hour. he is trying to stem the tide. >> what he was tweeting about and what we are faced with today are lost jobs. you think from 2,000 we have lost 5 million manufacturing jobs. that's because they have gone overseas also because of robots taking over a lot of jobs that people have done for years and years. that's going to be one of mr. trump's biggest challenges. how do you get these companies to keep these jobs

speaking friday with the president of taiwan. first president to do this in nearly four decades that. >> phone call now has many on the left in an uproar. gate tenney in washington with the reaction on this phone call. good morning, garrett. >> hey, good morning, clayton, abby and pete. this is the latest example of president-elect donald trump fulfilling his promise to shake things up in washington. on its face it may seem like a bit of an uproar over a simple phone call. this is the first time since 1979 that a u.s. president or president-elect has spoken to a taiwanese leader. are central relationship with china. china regards the island as part of its territory while taiwan claims its independence. and since 1979, the u.s.' official position is somewhere in the middle. the concern among some democrats and foreign policy experts is that china could interpret yesterday's phone call with taiwa taiwanese presit change on the issue.

yesterday patrick murphy tweeted his criticisms saying what has happened in the last 48 hours is not a shift. these are major pivots in foreign policy without any plan. that's how wars start. the president-elect responded to his critics tweeting the president of taiwan called me today to wish me congratulations on winning the presidency. thank you. he continued interesting how the u.s. sells taiwan billions of dollars of military equipment but i should not accept a congratulatory call. now the trump transition team has not indicated if this phone call with taiwan is any indication of future changes in u.s. policy. but stressed that mr. trump is taking calls from leaders across the globe. clayton, abby, pete. >> all right. thank you, garrett. >> look at these headlines last night. like all of these -- all of the major mainstream media websites last night were thinking we're like literally on the brink of war. here is the "new york times" on this phone call how

like a normal politician would do. and so when this case did he do something different. it hasn't been done in years and years. this is a very sensitive relationship. i spent a lot of years living in china. and i do think that going forward he is notten -- it's okay he made that call just saying thank you. about as harmless as it gets. >> you want these relationships in the world no doubt. >> most important trading issue that we have. you have to make sure we walk that line more delicately. he will figure that out in time once he gets to office. >> delicate balance of jobs and trade has been forefront plaintiff trump's candace. sapping jobs from the united states. mexico is pulling jobs from the united states. he, of course, during the campaign went after carrier. you remember the company out of indiana that was about to send thousands of jobs to mexico. we know what unfolded over the past few days. he went, in intervened and saved those thousand jobs that are there. he has his eyes on a new company about a mile down the road from carrier. >> turns out folks protesting at a company called rexnord we are losing

jobs as well. rexnord of indiana is moving to mexico and rather viciously firing allful its 300 workers. this is happening all over our country no more. he uses the word viciously. remember the video of the carrier employees leaving. it is a heartless process. he says it is happening at rexnord may be helping elsewhere. county policies be put in place so over time the economic environment changes so these companies make this decision on their own. >> that's a great point to. his tweet there, we are losing a lot of jobs. whether it's to overseas or to robots or other things. he has to figure out a way to talk to these ceos. we have heard that ford is now talking about working with mr. trump. making it so they are incent phase advised. verses. everyone has egos involved in these conversations, right? >> that's a great point. the threatening versus the underlying economics. right now is he not even president yet. it's like putting a band-aid on a wound right now, it seems. he tweeted this the other

day. or he said this, mr. trump did. companies are not going it leave the u.s. anymore without consequences. so there will be consequences. what are those consequences. in the case of carrier. critics are saying look, the carrier. what happen do you think closed doors meetings meant. defense contracts could dry up if you want to send these jobs. it's probably in their best interest to keep those thousand jobs here so that big defense contracts don't dry up. those would be the consequences he is perhaps talking about. that is the wound, that is the band-aid there needs to be a broader solution beyond just that ban band-aid. >> sea pro-business. that's a good thing. if you want jobs to stay in this country, new sheriff is in town who is going to have over time the opportunity to enact those policies. right now is he dealing with very antibusiness, pro-regulatory environment pushing jobs overseas. he will have the chance to

change that if american companies are keeping people here that's a good thing. >> one thing can he do as president that's a huge thing. we have heard from some of these employees at carrier to. hear the personal side. you were asking about christmas coming up and saying my job was saved. my family is going to have a real christmas this year. that's when it is real and you realize how many jobs are on the line out there. many jobs that have been lost. >> jobs were a big topic of this election. the debate happened just a couple days ago at harvard as well. kennedy school of government. i went there. went to some these types of forums where they discuss in debate what happened at the election. every four years the gains come and discuss about the fallout of the election. kellyanne conway was there jen palmiery was there they debated why did donald trump win and why did hillary clinton lose? and usually is a polite nice discussion among folks. it wasn't. it blew up. and this is the back and forth that happened.

taking a vast amount of water out of the international waters or waters where there is a right of innocent passage and making it into chinese territorial waters. they are trying to put their hands around the throats of the economies of japan, south korea, taiwan and others. it's a direct impact on the united states. they also think taiwan is a province. you want to talk about provinces, china? we'll talk. >> and why this is so central though is because china is our number one trading partner in the world. on that point, where do you stand on the tpp. obviously that's a big one for mr. trump. is it such a bad thing to increase trade with our asian partners? >> he said that he is going to pull the plug on tpp at the beginning. i would have to say not having been involved in it at all, even back in the bush administration, the advantage of tpp as it was sold at the beginning was strategic. that this was an alternative to increasing chinese influence in the region. yet, tpp, as i read it, as negotiated, is just another managed trade agreement. donald trump said repeatedly during the campaign he

critically important job secretary of state. you want to see people go through that. bob corker is also on that list. conservatives like certain people. insiders like others. and so this process gives him a chance almost to vet in realtime in the public space something that he is comfortable with. and he has shown as executive he is willing to do. so no one knows who is going to be picked other than the president-elect. and that's very clear. >> you saw that with mike pence. >> okay with this process. >> saw that in the 11th hour with mike pence. who is going to get the vice president in no one knew. no one knew but trump. >> three things i think that they're probably looking at for secretary of state. one is can they get through confirmation most importantly? two is are they going to be loyal to me? and three, maybe most importantly is are they good -- are they best at cooking that job? so you look at that list we just laid out. it looks like all of them have something that they can't get past. >> they also all come with assets. >> some sort of assets. >> yeah. but also some.

great and already the position he is taking. he is doing it his way. we love it and if he says that governor romney is the person he needs, we can disagree with it but we'll support it. >> when is he going to pick state, do you think? next week? >> i believe you will see it next week. that's going to be up to president-elect trump. but, yeah, we know who is the four final i.s are and it's a tough decision. there is all of them have pluses and minuses. they are all qualified. and, you know, that's requesting to be his call. who does he think he can work best with. and we'll all support him in that. >> representative, you mentioned how the media dubbed it in disarray two weeks ago. they are trying to find ways to poke holes in the process. it's the richest cabinet. billionaires in the cabinet potentially. what do you say to the critics saying wow, the rich guys from new york stocked into the cabinet? >> well, i would say we have smart, accomplished, in many cases entrepreneurial, private sector individuals coming in to the cabinet. that would be the dream

great to see both of you this morning. richard, i want to start with you. you hear that argument back and forth that the reason that trump won was because they gave a platform to white supremacists. do you buy that? >> >> well, there were a lot of reasons. although i have to say i was listening to your commentary earlier and you talk about how trump crushed hillary? it's an odd term to use about somebody who got 2.5 million fewer votes, who got under 47% of the vote, less than mitt romney got. it's a funny way to talk about crushing somebody. i will say this though. you know, we heard this term alt right. that's kind of an alt reality the notion that trump did the crushing. look, there are facts, clayton, trump tapped into the birther movement. he talked about muslims and mexicans. it's no coincidence that there have been hundreds and hundreds of racists and bigoted incidents ever since the election and people saying trump, trump, trump, as the backbone for what they're doing. >> den measure -- >> -- look, trump retweeted

white supremacists. how is that not tapping into white supremacy. i don't get it how is that even an argument. >> den issue in, does richard have a point here that trump didn't do anything to quell those individuals whose voices may be representative by the white supremacy movement and others? what do you say to that? >> well, this kind of white supremacy allegation is part of the modern democratic playbook. i remember in 1980 people dragged out five toothless white supremacists and said to reagan, you know, you are catering to white supremacies these guys are endorsed you. you notice they may have endorsed me but i haven't endorsed them. and i think this is the key issue that the democratic party historically has been the party of white supremacy. all the institutions of white supremacy from slavery to segregation, the ku klux klan, lynching, these were created, promoted and sustained by the democratic party. from the wikileaks revelations we have seen that democrats even now talk privately about blacks,

about hispanics, even about catholics in a way that you never see republicans talk. there is nothing eequivalent on the republican side. so this is a scapegoat to try to explain an election result that is very embarrassing for the democratic party. they had more money, they had the organization, the republican party was divided and still trump won. that leaves these guys with a lot of explaining to do. >> richard, did the democrats get the message losing 200 counties that had once gone to barack obama in areas where this used to come the bac backbone of the democratic party in west virginia and in pennsylvania and michigan? >> first of all, i have to say to den measure, you know, these incidents, these hundreds of incidents around the country where people are saying build a wall against hispanic basketball players at a high school. that's not something that democrats are making up. this is reality. i'm sorry. look, to answer your question, clayton, obviously there was a message problem

that democrats had. they see the ones. they're the ones who on trade deals are standing up for labor rights. they are the ones standing up for osha for health and safety regulations when there is an effort to tear down regulations. they believe that they are the ones who have stood up for blue collar, these white voters who they lost. no question they lost them. and i think the democrats have to figure out a way to reframe what they are doing to make sure people know that just like trump is taking credit for thousand jobs and poo pooing the 3.4 million jobs that were saved or created during the stimulus program. >> den 9/11 -- den >>-de >> >> the reason we have seen white working class is due to the combined forces of technology, globalization, and immigration. trump was the only candidate directly addressing those issues. he said i will do something about immigration. i will do something about

rules of engagement to win decisively in the battle. he is a warrior. he understands that he also understands that the department of defense too bureaucratic, too top heavy on the front end. and we need a warrior to cut through that red tape and reform, refit the department of defense. which will have a larger view today than it does. >> speaking of the red tape. congress has to pass a waiver. if you have served less than seven years before taking this position and kristin gillibrand as i just mentioned is one of them who may make it challenging for him. how is that going to play out and shouldn't it ultimately be who is best for that job? >> well, certainly the president should have his choice of who he wants to pick in the department of defense. this is a critical job. and it will have a broad influence because you look at where we are in the world today, our coalition partners, our allies need to be sured up and make sure that we know they know that we are going to hold our

commitments. on the hill, you know, i think it's outrageous that someone would go out the gates and say i'm going to prevent donald trump from picking his guy, which the military is absolutely behind jim mattis. on the basis of a waiver. this exactly what's wrong with washington. >> the swamp strikes back for sure. let's say the waiver does happen. is there any conflict on confirmation? what could or would the democrats try to bring up against mad dog mattis? >> well, probably he is not politically correct. and in my view, that's a strength. probably that he is a reluctant warrior but when he goes to war, he is serious about it. again, i fought with him in fallujah. he understands also that the backbone of our military is a sergeant and a chief petty officer. we want to make sure that our troops are sured up and the troops have what they need. is he a great, great pick. >> tell us more about him. because you are one of the individuals that has been with him more on a personal level. tell us more about him as a

yesterday chris murphy summarized a lot of the criticism in this tweet saying, what has happened in the last 48 hours is not a shift. these are major pivots in foreign policy without any plan. that's wars start. now, taiwan is one of the most sensitive issues in the u.s.'s relationship with china. the communist nation regards taiwan as part of its territory while the island, which is only 100 yards offshore from mainland china, maintains its independence. and since 1979 the u.s. has walked a diplomatic tight rope with an official position that's somewhere in the middle. since 1979 no american president or president-elect has spoken to a taiwanese leader until yesterday. and the president-elect is defending his phone call tweeting, the president of taiwan called me today to wish me congratulations on winning the presidency. thank you. he continued saying, interesting how the u.s. sells taiwan billions of dollars of military equipment, but i should not accept a congratulatory call.

you'll remember mr. trump had plenty of strong words for china on the campaign trail, though his transition team has not indicated that this phone call with taiwan's president is any kind of foreshadowing of broader changes in u.s. policy. but it does clearly indicate that it will not be business as usual in the next administration. abby, pete. >> you heard geraldo's voice over here. we have to bring geraldo in. >> good morning. >> enough talking about squash soup with you, but we will be with her dad in a bit. but is there hypocrisy here? when president obama normalizes relations with cuba, first international flight flying there last week, and then the president-elect is now being criticized for taking a call from a democracy, the president of a democratically elected government in taiwan -- >> yeah, but -- >> where was the outrage on the other side? >> taiwan, which was the sole representative of china for decades in american policy, the island for most off the chinese

coast with the nationalist fled when the communist took over, pete knows the military history very well, at some point nixon went to china, big china, said you are the sole representative of the chinese people. taiwan then became kind of a political outlier and our policy was to deal with china, republic of china. to take the call from the president of taiwan, to take the call from the renegade island, so to speak, is a major dis for the people in the republic of china with all their hundreds of millions of people. so, you know, i was just thinking about it, it is so outrageous an act in terms of the diplomacy. it might be brilliant. it might be a way to jump start new phase of u.s.-chinese relations. >> i don't know if you caught ambassador on the show earlier this morning who agrees with you. he thinks it's time for a shakeup. and at the end of the day we send over $100 billion in weaponry to taiwan. so sort of doing this fake dance. >> but here's the thing, you read the headlines last night and if you were on twitter at all, it felt as if we were

heading into world war iii. just some of these headlines, there's "new york times," how trump's calls to world leaders are upsetting decades of diplomacy. goes on and on. think about what actually happened, geraldo, this was just basically a call congratulating him to which he responded thank you. you're wondering why there's so much outrage not to mention he's not even sworn-in yet. >> well, i'm curious, abby, to see what your dad, former ambassador, says about it. to me this is why you need the pros around. you need someone to say, you know, if you do that -- >> he wouldn't have just decided to accept a call. someone probably counselled him. >> i don't know. >> i'd hope. i'd hope. i don't know. knowing him -- i've known for four decades. i love the guy. and particularly these, you know, the last six weeks of celebrity apprentice i was with him every day. he's the kind of guy say, yeah, screw it, i'm going to talk to him. go do some -- shuffle some

>> so it's a shakeup. but there's another shakeup we want to talk about on the democratic side. howard dean pulled his name out leaving -- information come out now about radical things he's said in the past about israel. things he said about a racial state many, many years ago, what's your take on keith ellison being kind of the standard bear for the democratic party? >> i think that keith ellison was a big bernie sanders supporter, so i think keith ellison is their guy if they want a very hard left, at times even radical democrat. he is one of the only two muslims in the congress, but they say that's not the issue. the real issue with keith ellison -- and it's not even his support of the million man march back in the day of louis farrakhan and things he said like creating homeland within the united states for african-americans and things like that, you can attribute a

lot of that to just being a kid. but his statements more recently about israel. israel is the, you know, it's to be nuanced in your support of israel, to be very at all from a hard pro-israel line is extremely difficult in this country. and i think that you have a situation here where he is equivocating his support for israel. i believe in a two-state solution. i'm take e talking geraldo now. i believe that israeli sett settlements in the west bank are an impediment -- >> he's talking about conspiracies that israel controlled foreign policy -- >> discovered by the antidefamation league made as recently as 2010 indicates he believes israel is trampling on the rights of palestinians and so forth and i think that might doom his candidacy. and in any case he's not the guy to unite the broader democratic

party. >> what do the democrats do now? who do they have? where do they go? i mean, this holiday season for them right now has to be some deep soul searching. >> i mean, they have lost if you think about the congress, 2010, 2012, 2014 and now 2016. what is the root of the problem? >> i think the root of the problem is they got too arrogant in terms of their organization at the state and local level. that's where when you have the state houses and the state legislatures drawing up what the districts look like -- and they're all controlled by republicans or two-thirds of them are controlled by republicans, the congressional districts favor the republicans. so you have a situation where you have donald trump can win with 2 million fewer votes than hillary clinton got. the democrats have to start a grassroots organizing campaign. now, going back to ellison, the adl now opposes ellison, but chuck schumer, who is now the minority leader of the united

states senate or soon will be, supports him. so you see the beginnings of a civil war within the democratic party. you know, to answer your question, clayton, where do they go? they have they have to get a guy, or woman, with tremendous charisma and strength to organize. and nancy pelosi won't be able to -- >> isn't it message? what do they stand for? >> the biggest problem with hillary clinton is why is she running, what is her actual message? >> and bernie sanders' message was resonating why they were so angry hillary was their standard bear. >> you just mentioned three different positions there and could also be are they the party of color, are they the party of urban america. there are so many different strokes that they have to pick a lane really. unions -- >> i think metalists -- >> i think the only -- it is sad to say that the only democrat with that kind of, you know, stature is joe biden.

what an interesting story this is. two days after president-elect trump got carrier to keep 1,100 jobs from going to mexico, trump sending a new message to another company last night, rexnord is the name of the company in indiana, trump tweeting rexnord of indiana is moving to mexico and rather viciously firing all 300 workers. this is happening all over our country. no more. trump's comments coming as ford now saying it's willing to work with trump to keep jobs in the u.s. so what's going on here? let's bring in the host of "making money" on the fox news network, charles payne, the one and only charles payne. great to see you this morning. >> good morning. >> so president obama over the summer back in june at a town hall event said there's no magic wand. you can't just wave a magic wand and keep 1,100 jobs here.

and yet it was interesting because that was precisely what he was trying to do with solyndra and picking different companies. and now president-elect trump has done this with carrier. so what is the role of the federal government in saving these jobs? >> well, i think the role of the federal government is to create an economic backdrop so that companies don't even think about leaving. in other words, not the whole thing carrot and stick approach. one thing barack obama did as president is he lavished us every year with billions of dollars in new regulations, higher taxes, all of the things that make it hard to run a business. in fact, business creation itself went to an all-time low. so the first thing the president does is create an economic backdrop so their businesses want to stay here. but also help if you had an economy that was moving. a booming economy. this is the first time we ever had a president who didn't achieve 3% economic growth. i think that's the main role right there. now, contrast that with the role of business. the role of business is to return money to shareholders.

typically that's what a business does. you try to bolster the bottom line and try to stay in business. >> so when you look at, you know, sarah palin wrote an opinion piece, i thought it was interesting you have a lot of liberals coming out praising the president-elect for saving these jobs and then conservative sarah palin saying this is crony capitalism and the role of the federal government should not be picking winners and losers, same being leveled at president obama for picking solyndra and other companies. so does she have a point here? >> well, a lot of conservative economic purists bristle at this still, the notion that the president-elect trump put this in place. i would say in this particular case donald trump felt the need to fulfill a campaign promise, and also a need to spur on this momentum of hope, this momentum of excitement -- it was partially symbolic, partially keeping a promise, but partially

also the intangible part of a great economy is having people believe in the economy in the first place. we saw middle america, particularly in the rust belt and other areas where people had given up in part because they'd been forgotten. they feel like they're part of the process right now. so for donald trump's economic policies to work, for any president's economic policies to work, ultimately we must buy into it. so what he did i think was a brilliant stroke of genius. i think it's going to help dramatically. i thought the thank you tour coupled with that was phenomenal. but there are going to be some issues. you mentioned ford in the read, they're still going to move jobs to mexico. there are other elements besides cheap labor they have some great trade. they have great trade deals with mexico and the rest of the world that we don't. we know we have a president who cares, and i'd like to see more than the carrot than the stick though sometimes they both work. >> charles, great to see you. >> thank you so much. our next guest created water boarding and spentd thousands of hours -- how does he feel about

aspects of 9/11. but the issue of the day is does water boarding work. something you know firsthand. first of all, does it work and did it lead to intelligence to prevent another attack? >> well, eits were certainly necessary to get information from detainees that allowed us to prevent another attack. so in some cases water boarding was the appropriate thing to do. in other cases it wasn't as effective. but i think it's less about water boarding because it was never a central part of the cia's interrogation program, and it was only done on three detainees. less important than water boarding itself, because the media seems to be obsessed with it, is the fact that at some point we are going to need some kind of legal coercion and that's a conversation that i think america needs to have. >> indeed. so great point. you can't conflate water boarding and enhanced interrogation techniques. it's a menu of options through

coercion. >> right. >> do we need more at our disposal in light of the enemy we're facing right now? have we walked too far back and we're not able to interrogate the way we need to against a vicious enemy? >> our primary problem is we're going to run into the worst of the worst. khalid sheikh mohammad had secrets he wanted to protect and didn't in conversation for two days in interrogation before he was sent to the black side. he's not going to give them up unless being coerced. the lesson is, yes, we need something. the army field manual wouldn't work on him. he needed to be coerced. >> fascinating information in that book as you mentioned. only three faced water boarding due to a process used very rarely. get your take on donald trump's new nomination of the secretary of defense james mattis, known as a war fighter that doesn't

mince words but also says disagrees with the technique of water boarding. here's president-elect trump talking some audio about his take on general mattis and this particular technique. take a listen. >> general mattis is a strong, highly dignified man. i met with him at length and i asked him that question. i said what do you think of water boarding? he said, i was surprised. he said i've never found it to be useful. >> and he goes onto say that he could get more with a six-pack of beer. do you agree with that? >> well, i have a lot of respect for general mattis. from what i hear he's a heck of a warrior. but i have had many years of experience interrogating top al qaeda terrorists, the senior leaders. and so what i would respectively ask general mattis is, as a senior leader, if you were being held by our enemies, would you give up information that would allow them to capture and kill americans and to disrupt our efforts to protect ourselves for

that means his plane crashed. >> that comment made seconds before a live report. cnn issuing a statement reading this, we have apologized to the trump transition team and producer has been disciplined. and an embarrassing flaw in a u.s. immigration system so bad that it now has all new citizenship ceremonies on hold. the chairman of the house judiciary committee bob goodlatte demanding immediate investigation after immigration officials found what's being called a major security flaw in the electronic system used for background checks. apparently that system failed for a number of people seeking citizenship. goodlatte is now asking homeland security to find out just how many people have slipped through the cracks. this is a story that sparked national outrage, the college that banned the american flag from campus now flying our symbol of freedom once again. the president of hamshire college in massachusetts first lowered the flag to mourn hillary clinton's election loss and then later took down the flag after it was set on fire when president-elect trump won.

recovered her. >> but we have you here on an interesting morning because we don't often talk about china on this show. we don't often talk about taiwan. >> right. >> a center of your expertise of course. >> former ambassador. >> former ambassador to china for the united states. this phone call that donald trump received from the president of taiwan has sparked outrage over the night that we're undoing 30 years, 40 years of diplomatic relations with china. what is your take? >> can i say abby lived in taiwan twice and having lived in china once there's a little too much hyperventilating about this one. so you've got fairly recently elected president in taiwan, she represents the democratic progressive party. second time for that party to be in power. she puts in a call to the president-elect. a fairly unconventional president-elect. he's going to do things differently, that's to be expected. he takes the call which shouldn't surprise anybody and they have a conversation. look at the response out of beijing out of the foreign

ministry and i'm pretty much an expert at responses out of the foreign ministry because i used to get dragged in as am baz bass dor when things went wrong, but they're not making it too big a deal. the issue should be this, does taiwan deserve more space? we share values. we have a big economy. we trade. they have a civil society that is large and robust and mature. and we ought to be giving them a little more space. >> interesting. >> if that kind of comes out of this whole discussion that people recognize that taiwan may be a little different than they thought, then maybe that should kind of create a template for the way that the new trump administration sees the ree jon. but let's remember this, just finally, the last time a member of the dpp was in power, back in the '80s, things got so hot we ended up sending in two carrier battle groups and it was a very dangerous moment. so whatever you do has to be in the context of a one-china policy. but you can find some flexibility there. >> we only have a minute left. i could ask for ten minutes more about that and your future in politics, whether you want to do

we are cooking with friends and getting to know the huntsmans this morning. they were chatting with us earlier stories from abby's childhood. and now ready to show us their famous butternut squash soup. so what goes into this soup? is this a longstanding family recipe? >> this is a basic recipe added with all the condiments that the huntsmans like. especially my u husband. you can't make anything without jalapeno and lemon and sriracha. >> a lot of heat. i like that. >> basic butternut squash. >> yeah, we start with the basics, sauteed onions, celery. >> a cup of onions. >> this is a hard recipe to make. my wife makes this when the kids weren't eating the other night she said do you know how hard mommy worked on this? using the blender, they didn't care. >> we did it twice a week. you can put it on top of ravioli, cheese ravioli. >> that's true. so versatile in terms of using it. but we started with the basic

burger recipe and in the spirit of american innovation. >> we changed it. >> you cook it -- >> cook it together? what's it like? >> it's a research and development laboratory. >> we get out of the kitchen when he's cooking. >> after you cook that for awhile, you add the chicken stock to it. chicken broth. let that cook for a little while. and then you add the butternut squash that you cooked at 400 for about 35, 40 minutes. >> we have a sample here. >> so, dad, tell people how you top it. that's sort of what makes this different, right? >> well, how do you top it? >> this we put at the end not called for. >> some more peppers over there. >> grab some of those real peppers. >> my dad has no taste buds left -- the pepper goes in. >> oh, there we go. >> the pepper goes in. and then you put -- yeah.
