megyn's new book is a new york times best seller now, "settle for more". thank you for watching tonight. ly see you at 9:00 in the morning. the kelly file. see you later. tonight president-elect donald trump meets with washington political elites but should be very careful. newt gingrich will react. >> is he still under consideration? >> yes, he is. >> does he have a chance to become secretary of state? >> he does. >> then the president-elect says mitt romney is still considered for secretary of state. trump transition members weigh in. and time magazine names donald trump person of the year, but they take a shot and call him the president of the divided states of america. >> when you say divided states of america, i didn't divide them. they're divided now. >> we'll have reaction, plus
10:01 pm
more on sanctuary cities. "hannity" starts right now. >> welcome to "hannity." neat gingrich will be here in a minute, but first the people of washington d.c. and the political elites are not president-elect donald trump's friends and they never will be and that's tonight's opening monologue. donald trump has been meeting with the likes of mitt romney, the chicago mayor, people like al gore. my advice to the president-elect tonight is be very careful. while president-elect trump considers romney for secretary of state, he should remember all the vicious and nasty and horrible things that he said about him on the campaign trail. >> if we reasons choose donald trump as our nominee, the prospects for a staf and prosperous future are greatly diminished. donald trump tells us he is very, very smart.
10:02 pm
[ laughter ] >> i'm afraid that when it comes to foreign policy, he is very, very not smart. dishonesty is donald trump's hallmark. think of donald trump's personal qualities. the bullying, the greed, the showing off, the misogyny, the absurd third grade thee at rakes. here's what i know. donald trump is a phony, a fraud. his promises are as worthless as a degree from trump university. >> it's pretty vicious. do you want him in your cabinet? then there's the mayor of chicago. he has deep political ties to obama and the clintons. he was at trump tower earlier today playing nice, but recently he said he will oppose donald trump on sanctuary cities. take a look. >> to be clear about what chicago is, it always will be a sanctuary city. now, administrations may change, but our values and principles as
10:03 pm
it relates to inclusion does not. >> then you have global warming alarmist, al gore. he was at trump tower earlier this week. however, we have to remember the campaign attacks that came from the former vice president. and all the crazy stuff he said like watch this. >> hillary clinton will make solving the climate crisis a top national priority. her opponent based on the ideas that he has presented, would take us to war climate catastrophe. we face a genuine planetary emergency. we cannot just talk about it. we have to act on it. the planet has a fever. if your baby has a fever, you go to the doctor. if the doctor says you need to intervene here, you don't say well, i read a science fiction novel that tells me it's not a problem. >> they are in favor of affirmative action if you can
10:04 pm
dunk the basketball or sink a three-point shot, but they're not in favor of it if you merely have the potential to be a leader in your community and bring people together. don't tell me we've got a color blind society. >> of course republicans are racist as global warming and fear mongering. early this morning on the today show, donald trump talked about his relationship with the current commander in chief. >> i've now gotten to know president obama. i really like him. we have, i think, i can say at least for myself, i can't say for him, but we have a really good chemistry together. we talk. he loves the country. he wants to do right by the country, and for the country, and and i will tell you, we very much disdagree on certain policies and things but i really like him as a person. >> president obama has been one of the worst presidents in american history. that's just a fact. the president-elect, i
10:05 pm
understand he's taking the high road here, and i guess probably he should to bring the country together. but to me it's pretty obvious that president obama is putting on a front in front of the country. now, our own ed henry is reporting the president is planning a farewell tour to try to alter the political narrative. as we've said before, there's no way that president obama will follow in jorge w. bush's foot steps and not criticize the next commander in chief. president obama is a radical lift wing ied log. once he's out of office, he'll be going after donald trump the same way he did on the campaign trail. we might remember this. >> this is somebody who spent 70 years on this earth showing no respect for working people. this is somebody who vilifies minorities and immigrants,
10:06 pm
vilifies people of muslim faith. if you disrespect women before you are elected president, you will disrespect women when you're in office. if you accept the support of klan sympathizers, the klan, and hesitate when asked about that support, then you'll tolerate that support when you're in office. >> and finally, there's the republican leadership in washington d.c. now, i'm glad to see late in the game finally coming around and supporting donald trump. but i'm an old reagan guy. i think it's worth remembering his admonition, his famous line trust was verify. my recommendation to the president-elect is set the agenda and push for the legislation that he wants first and then republicans in congress can do what they want later on. now, washington, it might seem like a nice place, but as trump as said, it's a swamp, and as soon as things get even a little bit tough, those people, those
10:07 pm
new-found friends, the political class, they will turn on him on a dime. so if the president-elect wants any real friends in washington, i heard he just got a dog called patent. if he wants two friends, get two dogs. joining us newt gingrich. anything you disagree with there? >> i don't know. look, i think that -- >> i love when you laugh at me. go ahead. take your shot. >> no. it's not a shot. i mean, i think, first of all, he did a very good job of putting together a montage that shows these guys were all deeply anti-trump. which is i think a useful reminder. i wish he had said to the mayor of chicago, what's your plan for saving lives in chicago? over 4,000 people have been shot in chicago. over 700 have been killed. the mayor recently pledged $1 million to help illegals fight against deportation. it would be nice if he'd taken
10:08 pm
that money and spent it in south side chicago saving american lives. i think a lot of things that the president-elect could talk to these guys about that might be sort of useful. i think part of this, you're right, this is a bring the country together, i am president of the whole country. i think that's fine. and i think it's just, as you were pointing out, it's really important to distinguish between courtesy and cooperation. every major thing president-elect trump wants to achieve, these people are going to oppose. he needs to understand that. and if he wants to get these things done, he's going to need to be prepared to fight many of the people he's currently making nice with. >> well, i read from congressman florez who was talking about paul ryan's agenda. and it kind of bothered me. what he suggested is well, let's do the things we all agree on first, and then the controversial things like the wall and imdwrags and maybe
10:09 pm
vetting refugees and maybe some of the harder parts of trump's agenda, i got the impression let's work it out later means you get the tax increase but never the spending cut. you get the amnesty but not the wall. i think they're trying to set trump up to go along with their agenda, not his. >> remember when bush came to down. they created a bigger washington bureaucracy because that's what teddy kennedy wanted. trump needs to understand these are smart people. they believe in big government and radical left values. they believe in controlling your life through bureaucrats, and if that's what he's willing to do, they'll love him. but if he remains the donald trump we see on the road talking to people, these huge crowds that continue to turn out, that donald trump is going to be
10:10 pm
taking these guys head on, because he stands for a dramatically different america than they do, and i think we just have to keep reminding ourselves and he has to remind people that's the case. but the things i read, the things i talk to the transition team about, they're moving in the direction of a very trumpian world, not in the direction of a chuck schumer al gore kind of world. >> mitt romney? >> romney is somebody you and i both oppose. i've watched the president-elect. he has expanded the number of people he's looking at. he has a very serious approach to finding the right secretary of state. if he ends up picking romney, which i hope he doesn't, but if he does, i'll support him. i think the president-elect is allowed to have the cabinet he thinks will help him best, but given the people he's interviewing, given the range of
10:11 pm
people he's brought in, i don't get a sense he's rushing to pick mitt romney. i get a sense he's looking for an alternative, and he's found first rate people who i think would be dramatically better as secretary of state. we'll see what he does. by the way, i like the fact that he's being disciplined and calm and doing it in a very serious way. >> all right. now, do you have an official role with president-elect trump? >> i'm a vice chairman of the transitionf that counts. >> no. i meant for when he becomes president on january 20th, and you knew exactly what i meant when you answered that. >> no, i didn't. >> yes, you did. i've known you since 1990. >> my goal is to be the chief strategist putting together what the -- the principles of trumpism and helping people from state legislature to governor to the state and senate and to the executive branch all move in th

here's the problem. when you've got a detainer and the locals are releasing somebody, although the feds have a detainer, the issue is whether or not they can force the locals to do their job. they can't. but what the federal -- >> are they aiding and abetting in the breaking of law? >> you're not going to win that argument. what you can argue -- >> so they can release people that are criminal aliens that have broken american law and just release them and they are not held accountable. >> there's a sovereignty they have. but they have to give us the information. they can say we're not going to give you anything that tells you they're illegal. but congress can force them, and we can stop the money going to them, and they have to tell us. that's the end of it. >> sheriff clarke, i know you met with donald trump. i don't know if you talked about a position.
10:50 pm
maybe, there have clarke, put him in charge of ice and i see a lot of good things happening. i don't think you'd like this go uncontested. >> i wouldn't. first of all, president-elect owes me nothing. i supported him because i thought he was best for the country. either we're going to be a sovereign nation and enforce or boarders or we're not. the problem is getting worse. we need zero tolerance for people crossing illegal and setting up residents. the cities are not going to comply, and they really deponent ha -- don't have, but under a federal statute, there are criminal laws for people who provide safe havens. we don't enforce that law. congress will deal with immigration reform when they come back. there are things on the statutes that we have to endorse otherwise this problem is going to continue to get worse. >> if we know about them.
10:51 pm
>> allen west, you met with the president-elect. how did that go? >> it went well. i actually met with the vice president elect. >> anything going to come of that that you can share with me? >> just proud to continue to serve this great nation as four generations in my family have done. >> what do you make of the issue of sanctuary cities? how should it be handled? >> simply. this is not in defiance of the trump administration. it's in being defiant of the constitutional law. and if we don't have sovereignty as a nation regardless of what you see happening at the city, then we have a breakdown of the rule of law, and this accomplishment of this republican. i think the representative of texas has created a means by which we can seize the funding to the cities. they cannot continue to act and
10:52 pm
defy us. when you talk about political optics, this is not a winning argument for the democratic party. >> they say these laws are unjust federal immigration laws and they're bigoted. here's the bottom line. these are federal laws. they are meant to be followed. we have the ability to enforce those laws and it's about time we did. president-elect donald trump will do that. obama did not do that. and the mayor of chicago is warning one of the most violent cities in the country. >> i would like to know if the president-elect said what are you going to do from keeping innocent people from getting shot in your city. >> when we look at national security, we have to understand who the immigrants are, and are they part of the problem in the country. >> sheriff? >> sanctuary cities are havens for criminal activity. they crave on people knowing they can't report it to the
10:53 pm
police for fear of being found in the country ill leely. we have unreported and unreported serious crime, rapes, child abuse, as a result of sonkt ware cities. >> i just can't understand. to me, and i think the average person, hearing that cities can defy federal law this way and help those who don't support our laws and get relief and don't get sent back, it's mind numbing. they're willing to gamble with the lives and the safety of the american people. i don't understand it. >> well, you're right. and it shows you where their priorities and concerns are. go and talk to kate stainly's family and ask them how they feel about it. i'm sure that story is repeated across the united states of america. when you look at the democratic party, it's actually as representative tim ryan said, becoming a story of coastal

urban elites. this is the serious policy issue. it's a serious rule of law issue. if the mayors decide they don't want to be part of the constitution republic, there are means to be held accountable. >> great to see all of you. i can see all three of you in the trump administration. you're all three of my friends, and none of you tell me anything. that's how deep our friendship is? >> you probably know more than us. >> coming up, an important question of the day right ahead. stay with us.

"time" magazine just reminded it exists by naming president-elect donald trump as person of the year. fair enough. hard to think of anyone more news worthy this year than donald trump. but to many on the left "times'" cover is a reminder that trump is indeed going to be a president and was therefore a trigger. here is one person who feels that way a congressional democrat from california. thanks for joining us tonight. >> thanks for having me. >> a tweet you sent out after seeing the cover on "the today show" this morning and you wrote. this adolf hitler was
