mr. trump to protect him as well. weighs loyal throughout the campaign. this is a personal thing for individuals and families to go through. are you going to get this job are you not? so public. we are all gossipping about it all. a way for mr. trump said look i don't know you are going to be the pick for secretary of state. maybe it's the right thing to do to remove yourself to make it look like you stepped away from it? there was one position rudy giuliani wanted for better or worse secretary of state. he didn't want dhs and other positions. it locks like he made that clear upfront and said hey, this is what i'm interested in. campaigned for it a little bit. some say may have heard him upfront. once he realized that wasn't in the cards it appeared he stepped out. >> interesting thing to be sort of campaigning out there. yeah, i that job. i want that job. on the other hand, there are other people who allegedly have been like leaking their names to be involved in this process. no, there is three people on our list. how is it now there are 10. >> people just walk in trump tower and asking for a

meeting. i'm thinking about that myself. walking in the door. >> abby now walking this trump tower asking for secretary of state. rex tillerson reportedly now moving up the list for secretary of state job along with mitt romney. i don't know, rex tillerson now. >> there are reports is he actually the frontrunner. is he meeting again with president-elect trump this weekend. he is the ceo of arguably the largest company in the world. >> goes back and forth between apple and exxon. >> clearly well respected on international stage. >> it's a different and interesting. there have been other businessmen that have been secretary of state. it would be an outside the box kind of reorientation. recognition, too, trump has used we're open for business. america is open for business. you can see that on the world stage, too. you have a businessman who has ties across the world. including to putin and russia, which is something trump has been criticized for and the middle east. you can see an opportunity to open up more opportunities for american businesses, potentially. if that's the orientation

christianity does not have a monopoly on those things. you can have a great time don't need to stick and continue doing things that you don't believe anymore just because there there is societal pressure to do those things. >> david, what was your response when you saw that billboard? >> the first response was i appreciate that they put christmas on the bool board. that was the first motivation we had for signs of christmas is what even christians were not recognizing christmas. was not recognizing the celebration of the birth of jesus christ, so we are appreciative to see anyone christmas. and the second thing that i wanted to say is without the atheists i wouldn't be on fox news right now. so i appreciate the opportunity to get on fox news and promote signs of christmas and to, you know, show respect for people of any belief.

julie, i'm going to start with you, is this just more sour grapes here? when are we going to stop pointing to someone else for the defeat of hillary clinton. >> i'm surprised to hear, pete that republicans are now saying that russians are great and there is no way heaven forbid that vladimir putin would do anything to destabilize the west. what i think donald trump said is incredibly dangerous. intelligence emanating from the cia is disqualified because of iraq. that's a world view that you can take and that's fine. when president trump has to rely on the cia and on their intelligence assessments to sell a particular foreign policy. those words may come back to bite him. that's something he needs to stop thinking about and part of the perspective. stop thinking as a president who is going to have to govern and use the ci. >> a as a tool. >> this came out of a "the washington post" article. in the article it went on to say there were disagreements among intelligence officials about the assessment. some questions remain unanswered. kremlin, shows some officials inside the kremlin

did not necessarily direct it but may have been associated. so there is some confusion in the intelligence. do you think it's fair the democrats to now be pointing to russia. remember when mitt romney said ignored. >> he was right. >> he was right, right? >> mitt romney was totally right. i will tell you something, what this says is mike pompeo can't take over the cia soon enough. this is a disaster. this is what the people were looking for. hillary clinton didn't lose because of the russians. hillary clinton lost because of two thirds of americans thought she was dishonest. when you look at the exit polls on the throw most important issues of the day, change, the economy, national security. donald trump had significant advantage over her on those issues. and that's why donald trump won. >> aaron, what do you think? >> well, lock, obviously donald trump is going to be leading these agencies so he has to walk a fine line here and doesn't want to undermine the agency. so we do want to see what the results are of the study. it may be that we shouldn't have heard about this investigation until after it

was concluded. >> sure, well, it was leaked. we don't always know why things are leaked to the "the washington post." >> that's true. >> it came alongside the same day that barack obama is saying we're going to investigate these elections and the russian influence in them potentially. >> he obviously needs to be legitimate president. he has to say this didn't really throw off the results of the election. but do you have to walk a really fine line. we do need to know if there was hacking. >> i also want to say i don't think democrats are blaming the russians for why she lost. i think both sides and this doesn't just include democrats, mike mccullough the chairman of the homeland security committee. chairman of the intention committee in the house. lindsey graham, john mccain, i can go on and on. republicans and democrats all agree the russians most likely had something to do with this. the government should release national intelligence estimate as declassified as they can make it to tell us exactly what transpired. this should not be a partisan issue. one day, one day, when crump's behavior they will do the same to him.

>> one day could release emails of the republican rnc. >> no doubt. >> there were disagreements, there is no overall intelligence assessment. they disagreed. barack obama came out two days after the election said there is no evidence of tampering at all. >> barack obama should have taken action long, long ago on the russians and their hacking. i'm not exexcusing barack obama on this. intelligence disagrees whether the russian government or people allied with the russian government. >> which is a big difference, right. >> actually it's not a big difference. somebody who knows something about the russian government and how they behave. just because vladimir putin is not doing this from the kremlin doesn't mean he is not controlling levers associated with him. wikileaks and julian assange said we didn't get this from the russian government. that may be de facto and legally true, that doesn't pass the last test plenty of people. >> doesn't pass the laugh test. >> i believe it's a joke. >> republicans too. >> for the democrats to still be pushing this issue and saying suspects why she

lost. >> i don't think anybody is saying that. >> i'm a democrat. i'm not saying that. >> i get that. >> they are muddying the waters though. >> at the end of the day what they are trying to do similar to what they did to george w. bush in 2000. trying to discredit his presidency. that's what they're trying to do with donald trump. it's going to back fire on the democrats and back fire on them again because you know what? donald trump's numbers have increased significantly since election day. his approval rating now as president-elect. >> talk to mike mccaul, talk to john mccain and lindsey graham. none of them are democrats and all of them agree that the russians most likely had something to do with this and we need to do something about it you keep saying the democrats. >> directly by or orchestrated with frump and the trump white house. >> nobody is suggesting trump is responsible for this. >> plenty of people. >> that's crazy. we have no evidence of that. >> the russians are telling me the segment has got to be over. we are a team on the battlefield, today it is a war between the army and navy. it's something that the cadets prepare for all year. as you mentioned 117 games so far. starting in 1890. the navy is going for its 15th game winning strategic. we have won 14 of the last games. navy has won 60 in the past. army has only won 49. today we do have a special guest. it is a tradition that oftentimes the commander-in-chief, the president, attends the games. today we have learned that the president-elect, the commander-in-chief elect donald trump will be here on the army side for the first half of the game and then come over to the navy game, as far as i'm concerned probably because he wants to watch us win. now, i'm here with the the very special guest here today. one of my naval academy class mates. you can see we are both wearing flight jackets. josh kinneer. naval academy graduate class of 97 with me. helicopter pilot. here as the coordinator for

with. but it's also important that if it is tillerson that he surrounds himself with people who have a real deep handling on policy. >> there was contention during the campaign you will recall, of course, with house speaker paul ryan. >> um. >>um and the trump campaign. and he had marshalled really republicans in the house to sort of keep their eye on their own paper and really focus on their own campaign. >> great way to put it, put your eye on your paper. >> met with donald trump recently and asked about this opposition during the election season. i think it's a good would you have to play here. take a listen. >> why was it so hard -- >> -- even nominee. >> i was basically focused on keeping the house republican. i was very concerned on b. whether or not we could lose the house republican majority. as you know, speaker of the house, your primary responsibility is to save house republicans. my biggest fear, the black swan event we were worried about was just think of having a hillary clinton presidency, a democrat senate run by chuck schumer and a democratic house run by nancy pelosi.

sympathetic. he promised us that he would end sanctuary cities. he promised us that he would build a wall and stop the flood of illegal immigrants. the joke was that the closer hillary came to winning the election, there were as many illegals coming over the border as there were gun sales in the united states. i'm not trying to make a parallel to that but it was kind of funny. but the bottom line was he is a very compassionate guy. when you talk to him in person, he looks you in the eye. when he tells you something, i believe that. it's pretty credible. >> we are learning that oakland has asked the governor's office in california because they already have laws in the books there in oakland which bar law enforcement from doing immigration raids and basically deporting any illegal immigrants. they are asking the governor's office to make

california now a sanctuary state. when you heard that, what did you think? >> you know, i think it's a last move of desperation for the open borders sanctuary city people i think if you look at the data, probably 70% of the united states do not want sanctuary cities. so, i think it's just, you know, publicity. it's not going to happen. i think the thing that disturbs me the most though is that the district attorney in los angeles is not willing to give the cali gang data base to the federal government. and what that is, basically, is it's the data that they have been accumulating over the past 10 years of gang members. >> happened to your daughter, ray? >ray? ray, are you able to hear

me? >> yes. >> you can tell us the story? what happened to your daughter? >> >> well, her and her friend were just out, you know, getting a pack of gum at 10:00 at night. and she was rear ended by a young man who was an illegal immigrant who had several other violations in the tide water area and released. he had a fake florida drivers license. he had absolutely no insurance. he was three times the legal limit of alcohol abuse. and the speed limit on the boulevard was 45 miles per hour. the girls were sitting at a stoplight just chatting and liiving to the radio. and he hit them from behind at 75 miles per hour and killed them immediately. >> what would you want people who are supportive of sanctuary cities to know this morning? >> well, i would have to say

that the real, the real impact is the story that i just told you. it happens every day. they worry more splitting their families up they talk a lot about tearing up families. but the people who are victims of illegal immigrant crimes i can't describe how it tears up our families. i mean, in the case of sanctuary cities, if someone is deported, i know, the families are separated. but ultimately, no one dies. >> right. >> in our case, we have funerals. and we never get to see our family again. so i don't see how you can compare the two. and i think the ledge lay legis,

the military civilian oversight? >> well, you know, pete, think about the fact that barack obama had three generals right out of the chute in his administration. denny blair at dni. he had rick sem shreky at the veterans affairs and jim jones as national security advisor. there was never a complaint. look, being a retired general, having a successful military career should not be a penalty. remember that these people are civilians now. so, you know, i think that this whole thing is just a lot to do over nothing. >> colonel shaffer, to his point, is it just generals or is it the wrong generals from the left? as he pointed out, there were throw generals at the beginning for barack obama. if any general who is competent. look, this is the end of the high school debate team being in charge of national security. the current crew ben rhodes completely incompetent. they have been the stewards of the bad foreign policy.

jeh johnson at dhs is a freaking lawyer for goodness sake. look what's going on dod with ash carter. is a career bureaucrat. what has to be done is clear. they have to repair the past 8 years of neglect, malfeasance and incompetence. so you have got to bring in people who actually have an understanding of the issues. who have studied them their entire life and frankly these are the right generals at the right time as general boynton pointed out they are retired. they are like us. they have the right to be employed. kudos to mr. trump for hiring veterans. >> staff sergeant, as someone who has walked the ground, what does it say to the ground pounder that this president is choosing war fighters like this at the top? >> well, you know, it says everything. general mattis, specifically, when that secretary of defense has to make some tough decisions the men and women on the ground will know he has fought for them all the way to the end. if it's a tough decision they will believe in that decision. morale is huge when it comes to winning a war. morale is huge when it comes

to securing this country. the general specifically that have been chosen so far, general kelly has given everything to this country. we're talking about generals who have spent 20 to 30 years in active combat and understand the cost of war and the cost of securing this country. they haven't, you know, this is 2016, we have been at war for 15, 16 years. and, you know, if you count the late 90s, some of the generals have been operational for most of their career. that's important. they have experience. when you talk about draining the swamp, where else can you go to find a nonpolitical person that's competent in these roles. i think these are amazing picks. and absolutely, i think when you just have to have something to argue about, argue about what they did in their past career. >> great points. unfortunately, we have to leave it right there. there is also reports out this morning that the pelc is drawing up stronger plans, pulling power away from the white house to the pentagon to execute the fight against isis. i think something all of us can agree, less politicians and speech writers and more generals and operators involved in the process.

mr. mayor, good to see you. >> good morning. how are you? >> we learned over the past few days that you had taken your name out of the running. >> i did. >> for secretary of state. but that happened weeks ago. we didn't know about it. >> november 28th, i think. november 28th. i decided that first of all i'm very happy in what i do. a lot of people say that. they don't mean it. i do. >> what do you do. >> i run a security company all over the world as you know. that's one of the issues. pause i did a lot of work for 10 different governments. still do. and i also run part of a law firm that does cyber security, which is a passion of mine. and i run a cyber security practice. so, when someone said to me you are going to travel a lot as secretary of state. i showed them my travel schedule i said no, probably less. he had good choices. my objective in joining the campaign was never to get a job. it was the last thing in my mind. it was for my country. i didn't want to see this country slip into socialism. i didn't want to see us

become some kind of european second rate country. i thought that's where we were headed. and i thought only donald trump could stop us. also i knew him for 28 years. is he a close, personal friend. and i knew what america is now finding out what a great president he could become. >> yeah. >> so i did it with a great deal of passion. and the idea secretary of state sort of entered my mind toward the end. when i thought about and it i saw the choices that he had and the difficult position he was in because of his loyalty to me and friendship, best thing for me is to take myself out of it. >> was that a difficult thing to do? >> a little bit but not that difficult. because i kne choices. if i thought he didn't have a great choice, and thought he needed only me, which is probably never true that they need only you. but if i thought that i would do it in a minute. >> there are a lot of names in the mix, including rex tillerson. >> i think rex tillerson is an excellent choice. i think josh bolten -- had i

been president in 2008, i probably would have appointed him as secretary of state. i mean, josh bolten is superior. i think mitt romney, i mean, i voted for him, i supported him. i thought he would have been a much better president than barack obama. i do think like mike huckabee does he should apologize or at least he should explain what he meant by some of the comments that hurt me greatly when i was campaigning for my friend donald trump. i think actually donald is less troubled by it than all. >> other people are angry about it. >> like sometimes your wife gets angrier when someone assaults you and you get over it. >> president bush said i have been the son of a president and the president myself. it's much harder to be the son of a president. you take it so personally. you mentioned being hurt by this. >> i was hurt by what mitt did. i supported mitt maybe not as much as i did donald. but i sur gaited for him auto times. i introduced him to people. i helped to raise money for

him. i was deeply involved in his campaign. is he wasn't like sitting out on the sidelines like jeb bush and a few others who i didn't like either. i thought they should have been. at least they weren't putting out some really terrible things that he said about them. >> were you worried at all about the -- you mentioned off the top here that that could have been a concern working with 10 governments like you have. and your cyber security role. would that have been a problem? >> no. actually what i did was, before i dropped out, i had myself completely vetted. i set vet me for the job. i don't know, just in case you want to use me for a mission five years from now or two years from now or three years from now. i was completely vetted. i passed 100 percent. not a single -- the mistake that the media made was, they thought i represented these governments in washington. i didn't. i did work for them. for example, the other night i got an award from the brazillian government for reducing crime by 48%. they had a dinner at the brazilian embassy in

washington for 2800 people. that's the kind of work i do. i do crime reduction, terrorist reduction. that's the kind of work i do. >> why did you wait two weeks to come out. >> for good reason. >> you everywhere behind closed doors making this decision. >> because i didn't want to put the campaign requested that we withhold it. plus they didn't accept it immediately. they said they wanted to keep me in the running. i said i don't want to be but they said they wanted to keep me in the running. so we agreed that i will wait until you are ready. when you're ready, then we can announce it. >> business interests or connections have, you know, were reported that that might be a complication for you. >> not only that i checked with several key members of the senate republican and democrat, and i think i. >> on that rex tillerson, exxon mobil ceo his name has risen to the top. is he an international businessman, do you think that helps him? >> what are we going to do appoint people who don't know the world.

put together the securities -- he appointed him because somebody who understands the industry will understand how to regulate it best. and blamp else you think of joseph kennedy he established the sec and i did a lot of prosecutions with him. again, who are you going to appoint to oversee financial institutions than someone who knows about financial institutions? you going to go appoint some person who a techy who knows all about computers but not about financial institutions. the kind of forecast they want to put together would be business. in a business, you put the people with skills here, here, and here. they are going to have those prior skills. the question is what's their motivation? the best people for me on the securities prosecutions that i did and i did a lot of them. you might remember. boski, wall street won. that's the better movie because it's about me. wall street one.

general. the president, of course, is thes about of the attorney general. and i was in the post watergate justice department. the way we separated that was the president gets to run policy. the attorney general makes prosecutorial decisions. the white house should never get involved in a prosecutorial decision. unless somehow it would affect national security or it would be a terrible blow to the united states. so, he has got a great attorney general. jeff sessions is a close friend of mine. he used to introduce me at our rallies as he used to be my boss. because jeff was the u.s. attorney in alabama when i was associate attorney general. jeff will make the right decision. >> yeah. >> jeff will make the right decision. that should rest on the attorney general and i promise you, jeff will not go meet someone on a tarmac before he makes the decision. >> we have got to leave it right there but you are going to the army navy game today, right? >> yes. >> who are you rooting for? >> i can't. >> you told me west point. >> go army, beat navy. there we go.

comfort because, of course, when donald trump was meeting with al gore, some among the common sense free market environmental movementy a little bit worried. they are putting the pedal to the metal. i wrote culture of corruption in 2009 that the obama administration itself was very responsible for kicking people out, foirg them, pushing out people who dared to air any dissent on the climate change issue. ask alan carlan a senior e.p.a. mustled because he was drawing attention to the outdated data that the liberal e.p.a. wassousing to justify massive regulations that would cause businesses and taxpayers huge amounts of money. >> yeah, in any department. that's what the bureaucracy counts on is the long-term staff, whether they agree with who is in charge a few appointees or not. the ability to subvert things they don't agree with

could stop us. also i knew him for 28 years, he's a close personal friend. and i knew what america is now finding out what a great president he could become. so i did it with a great deal of passion. and the idea of secretary of state sort of entered my mind toward the end. when i thought about it and saw the choices he had and the difficult position he was in because of his loyalty to me and friendship, i said best thing to me is take myself out of it. and there was no other job -- >> was that a difficult thing to do? >> a little bit, but not that difficult because i knew he had good choices. if i thought he didn't have a great choice and thought he needed only me, which is probably never true they need only you, but if i thought that, i would do it in a minute. >> there you go. >> he did say if there was like a golf position in the administration. >> let's bring in that voice you hear. the great geraldo rivera joining us this morning. >> does the golden doodle have webbed feet? that's key. if he doesn't have webbed feet, because i made a lab and a pug, and the dog i got was grotesque

and lovable but did not have webbed feet. >> did you call it a lug? >> why not? >> we're going to -- i would love to talk about dogs all morning, but i want to talk about the cabinet picks. you heard mayor rudy giuliani talk about his reasoning for taking his name out of the running. what do you think the story is here? >> well, i don't know, i like mayor giuliani very much. i've known him for years since he was a prosecutor in the southern district. i think in my opinion, and i don't portend to any inside information, i think the mayor got too hyperpartisan in terms of his demeanor change from being america's mayor, appealing broadly, to being if you remember the republican national convention and some of the appearances in the campaign he was so fervent and so emotional and big-eyed and different than he had been in public life. and i just didn't have the -- and, again, i love the guy, but the gravitas seemed to me, the

dig ani the gravitas seemed to me, the dig anty that mitt romney does have, i think the same as mayor giuliani, he was so fervent in his opposition to donald trump that i think both of them kind of excluded themselves. >> rudy was a loyalist. >> too loyalist. >> but many, some have suggested why are the loyalists not there in the cabinet. do you think that hurt him at the end is what you're saying? >> i do. i really do. and i think it's tarnished general flynn also. i think if he were to be facing a senate confirmation at national security advisor, he'd have a very, very rough time of it. i just think trump is transitioning into the statesman. now he still has the ferve, the reverence, the twitter account, he's going to be very different stylistically, but i think what he's trying to do is surround himself with people who've been in government who have international reputation who is are not controversial, you know,

the oklahoma a.g. aside who are -- and i guess the labor secretary designate also, but it seems to me this is a cabinet that appeals to real traditional conservative republicans in a way that it would reflect a reagan cabinet or a nixon cabinet. i think that it's a very traditional conservative cabinet. >> because it's interesting, i mean, we know how much he does value loyalty. but you look at some of them who've been the most loyal to him, newt gingrich, mike huckabee or mayor giuliani, and he's making it clear that just because you are loyal to me doesn't mean you're automatically going to get the job you want. i'm looking for the best person for that role. and i think some people see that as refreshing. >> trump and i -- i've known the president-elect for a long time. he does value loyalty. and he extends friendship and warmth in a way that is very, very personal. and you appreciate it. i got a note last night, you

know, i wrote back immediately and said -- >> from mr. trump. >> how excited erica, my wife, and our 11-year-old was to hear from you, mr. president-elect. but that's different. who he invites to his parties or the inauguration or he likes to hang out with or he has a warm feeling for, i think is different. he's a businessman. and i think he's going to run this administration -- he's going to be ceo of america. the whole thing about "celebrity apprentice" so interesting having been on the final cast of "celebrity apprentice," wrapped taping in march of 2015, obviously he had decided but hadn't announced it, he's going to handle the presidency as "celebrity apprentice" times 1,000, times a million. he ran it in a business like way. he was flamboyant on the air, or he had that persona on the air that was very well known to people over the seasons. but he also controlled the program in a way that was very business aware.

he was intimately familiar with the ratings performance, with the revenue from the show. he knew everything about that show. and, you know, he's going to run the country. people will mock the comparison, but remember what i said. that style will be how he runs -- it's a microcosm. >> i want to ask you about something else rudy giuliani said because he hasn't done a lot of interviews on this question and specifically around hillary clinton, seems that president-elect trump has turned the page on hillary clinton, mentioning on "60 minutes" wanting to move past that. kellyanne conway said the same thing. so we asked the mayor if called upon to be a special prosecutor and if attorney general sessions asked him to do this, would he do it, here was his response. >> i think several times i offered at various speeches when i probably was a little emoti emotion emotional, i would do it for nothing. i don't know. let's see if we ever get there. >> did you agree with his decision not to prosecute at

this point? >> yes, i agreed that it was good to put it behind us. i think it's good for him to get himself out of it. i told him and we discussed this during the campaign that really isn't the right decision for the president. that's for the attorney general. >> so we turned the page on this? >> i certainly hope so, clayton. and i am delighted that the president-elect has made that decision. why are we going to go back over that sorry ground again? >> there's a lot of sorry ground. >> but, you know, i'm not so sure, pete, as you know i have been extremely skeptical about i think that remembering back to what the majority leader and the house republicans mccarthy said about, you know, the best thing about these hearings is it's diminishing hillary clinton's poll numbers. i think it was really -- politics. there's bigger fish for the justice department to fry. a much more concerned about these allegations were russians really messing with our elections. i want to explore that.

i think that there is real substance there. >> and rudy giuliani agrees with you on that. >> yeah, you can't have people messing with the elections. just because we like the way this one turned out, that doesn't mean we forgive a foreign power for meddling in our elections. i think that's very serious. what if it had gone the other way? what if we didn't like the way it turned out? >> do you reject the idea some are trying to delegitimize trump's election as a result? >> you can investigate without doing that, right? >> the whole electoral college, majority vote and all the rest of it i think people will effort the delegitimatization of the -- but it doesn't matter. he will be the 45th president of the united states. it's not a question of the trump train anymore that we're jumping on. it's america's train. we root for his success. and if you are obstructing that or trying to undermine the president, i think shame on you. but still, that doesn't alter the fact that if the russians messed with our elections we should know about it.

with him, he's going to make that announcement, he'll let the team know. but until then he's going to continue to talk to these individuals until he feels a level of comfort that the right person has been selected. >> is the ceo of exxon, rex tillerson, is he number one choice right now? if you were a betting man. >> i honestly don't know. i don't know where the horse race is. he's definitely a highly qualified individual and someone who made a huge impression on mr. trump. bru e but where that horse race is only president-elect trump knows. i mean, these people are coming decision, he keeps his counsel very close, but he's definitely someone that would be on any short list and high up there because of the immense qualifications that he brings to the table. >> all right. want to get your take on russia, the cia and the tweet that you put out there a few hours ago. you say the rnc just to clarify was not hacked. "new york times" was told and chose to ignore exhibit number one in fake news. >> yeah, actually, the second

one was wait for their next exclusive this morning that elvis is riding a unicorn over a rainbow. they were told -- they were told, high up within "new york times" that this was not true, that intelligence agencies that we are working with confirmed that we have not been hacked. and yet they chose to ignore that because they wanted to write a story that fit a different narrative. the fact of the matter is that they're using unknown, unnamed sources to support a narrative they want to put out there. but the fact is where are the named sources? where are the agency sns how come cia won't go on the record? it's amazing how they want to talk about fake news and bash the right, well, you look at the so-called great institution, the "new york times," they were told very privately that -- and we were willing to give them access to certain things to prove it and yet they chose to ignore it. this is reprehensible. the "new york times" should be ashamed and the american people need to know when you read

about fake news. and i would never suggest this is a fake poll, but i would suggest that i have no idea what to make of it. i don't know where the relevance is. and i'm not sure what the authors of it would really have us conclude. i think, as i understand the data, and i'm certainly not a statistician, but we're going back to the depression. and we're looking at the rate with which kids have outearned their parents over the last 70 and 80 and 90 years. and obviously there's a dropoff. when we started keeping track of this kind of thing, the country was depressed and then it was recessed and then we had the post war boom and then, you know, it's just mathematically i don't understand how it's reasonable to assume that every generation is going to out earn the last one. but my bigger problem with it, modest, but it's foundation. hyperfocused on the individual. so we don't look at, you know, dozens of millions of people and how much they're earning this month versus that month. we try to focus on work ethic. we focus on jobs that actually exist. we focus on training and from

what i've seen, the dream is not dead. the dream is alive and well. but, again, look, the premise is it's a dream. >> right. >> the degree to which we hope for things to happen. >> exactly. >> what do you conclude? >> we do a lot of stories on this show about higher education, universities and colleges and safe spaces and trigger warnings and bubble world, are we preparing kids to go out and achieve the american dream like their parents did? >> well, you know, i think the obvious answer is no, but the clever answer is yes if you really look at a dream for what it actually is, a fantasy, a hope. you know, a dream job is this thing that we've told millions and millions of kids is not only out there for them but is the proximate cause of their happiness. so if you don't get your dream job, you're always going to feel vaguely dissettled and unhappy. kind of like not finding your soul mate, right? it's a snipe hunt, it's hard to

go out into the world with that level of expectations. again, it's so much more interesting to me to look at an individual and say are you willing to do a hard thing? that's what "dirty job" was, that is still for sale. >> are they willing to do that? is this younger generation willing to get their hands dirty, mow those 60 lawns a day for the landscaping job to go out there and do the dirty jobs in order to move this economy? >> honestly, with great respect, that's a trick question for me. because if i say yes, i just passed judgment on 40 million people. if i say no, i'm a pessimist and i'm not a pessimist. i honestly believe that the opportunities are better than they ever have been for the precise reason that the reverse commute is more lucrative than it's ever been because more people are looking around and concluding erroneously in my humble opinion, that opportunity is dead. if you really want to distill this down into two most simple

parts in my view, the country is right now divided but not in the ways we typically discuss. it's divided over here by people who are absolutely convinced the hope is dead, opportunity is dead and the dream is dead. and over here people have a different view. we're being divided through optimism and pessimism. and if we don't look a little harder at the numbers that come over the transom, my fear is we're going to conclude something completely upsidedown. >> we also live in this world where you can follow people's instagram accounts and seems like everyone else's life is perfect, right? or you can launch a youtube channel and they become famous within 24 hours. everyone is wanting to be famous today. and you lose sight of humility and service and hard work, and that's what i worry about. that is still the american dream and it should be. >> well, think about reality as it applies both to the american dream and to that particular vertical of tv with which we've become obsessed. my favorite moment in reality television, aside from the ones

i participated in, are those early episodes of "american idol," where you see a 20 or 22-year-old or 18-year-old auditioning and learning somewhat tragically but for the first time in their life that they can't sing. >> right. that they're not good. >> for the first time in their life nobody ever told them, no, look, hey, maybe your dreams and your particular set of skills would be better served over here. and so that's the disconnect. we have 5.8 million jobs available right now. nobody's standing in line to audition for them. >> great point. and we need them. >> do you think a study like this, a reflection kids aren't making what their parents did at that age is part of what trump is tapping into, this sense we're falling behind. we had greater days, they can be great again going forward? >> i think politicians have to say things that confirm the kinds of studies you're talking about and acknowledge the sort of big fat global trends that do in fact exist. but i believe that fundamentally

opportunity lives in the cracks. and in many, many ways the more dire it looks for the masses, the more interesting it becomes for the entrepreneur, the aspiring small business person, but most importantly for the individual who's willing to learn a skill that's actually in demand. we've trained 500 welders. they're killing it right now. they're killing it. steam fitters, pipe fitters, i can go down the list. >> and those in a down economy -- what we talk about on the show, those in a down economy keep that same paycheck, they're in demand, always going to need carpenters, those welders, those skill sets, but what do you think about automati automation? this idea that we're going to bring these jobs back to the united states i think is pretty much a fallacy because those jobs are gone to begin with. now we have robots doing a lot of those jobs. >> right. >> yeah, i think you're right. i mean, look, it's glib to say somebody's going to have to make a road bus. it's true.

i'll defer to huxly said the greatest threat to freedom is total anarchy, the second greatest threat is total efficiency. i think we've confused efficiency with effectiveness in some fundamental ways. one of the tenants of "dirty jobs" was to find people dedicated their work ethos to becoming effective and as a result there was not this obsession with always ringing every last dollar or penny of efficiency out of the model. it was just -- it seemed the simplest thing, but of course i know how naive that sounds. efficiency does push the greater market. and my very first job that anybody ever paid me for was tearing tickets at united artist tv, one of those multiplexes in a mall. i went back today, the usher is gone. the tickets you buy automatically and behind the concession stand you get your popcorn from a machine too. so, you know, we probably don't want to get into the minimum wage, but when you talk about the unintended consequences of moving all that up, you're

the u.s. naval academy band, over my right shoulder you have midshipmen and cadets gearing up getting ready for this fight. now, most of the time in the army and navy we are a team when we go to war, but this is the one day a year when the army and navy are at war. this tradition started in the 1890s and got so heated at one point that an admiral and a general almost got into a duel. it's been a game played almost every year since 1930. now, because the president is also the commander in chief, sometimes we have the president attend the game. this may be the first time that the president-elect is attending the game, as donald trump will be here today. and in fact this morning he tweeted about it saying, quote, as a show of support for our armed forces, i'm going to be at the army-navy game today. looking forward to it. it should be fun. and mr. trump, if you're listening, i can promise you it will be fun. this is an incredible event. there's going to be a fly-by of four f-35s, the hottest jets in the navy and marine corps today.

there's going to be so much festivities around us as well. this whole week leading up to this event midshipmen at the naval academy, cadets at west point have been having bonfires, pep rallies and a lot of spirited shenanigans between the two teams. so it's going to be a wonderful time. exciting starting at 3:00 p.m. today. and, you know, i know we're supposed to be fair and balanced here at fox news, but this is the one day that i am bias. so i have to say go navy, beat army. >> you are super bias, lea, but you do a great job for us. >> i think this might be my favorite football game. army versus navy, so much spirit behind it. >> so much tradition army uniforms today are modeled after the paratroopers in world war ii of the 82nd airborne. >> really? >> yeah, netting on the helmets modeled after their uniforms, very cool. so much tradition with the game. >> love it. we'll be watching. secretary of state list gets shorter this morning. rudy giuliani out. so where could trump go from here to fill that cabinet post? our own karl rove, there he is, here to weigh in next. he's my own.

the secretary of state list getting a little shorter as america's mayor, rudy giuliani, drops out of the race. joining us now is former senior advisor to president george w. bush and fox news contributor karl rove. merry christmas, karl. thanks for joining us this morning. >> merry christmas. >> indeed. we had the mayor on earlier in the show confirm that indeed he did take his name out of the running actually back in late november. what do you make of that and how does that reshuffle the consideration for secretary of state? >> well, look, it probably doesn't reshuffle it because he did make it in late november. so donald trump has known this for look this happens all the

time in transitions. happened to us several times in transition that somebody was under consideration, withdrew their name in 2000, 2001, but we know about it now because this transition has been so public. donald trump has decided, you know, interview people publicly. summons them to trump tower. and i think it's helped him because it's given people a sense of who he is, he's a magnanimous individual putting things behind him, looking for the best person, giving it serious consideration. i think this doesn't really change the reality of it much. he's got a tough decision to make. he's taking his time. and he's going to come up with whom he thinks is going to be the best partner to him as secretary of state. >> who do you think is at the top of that list? a name we've been talking about this morning ceo of exxon, rex tillerson, do you think that's the most likely outcome here? >> well, it's the latest one. and he's a terrific person. he's a personal friend of mine. i know him well. i had lunch with him last week. he is a great individual. and we've got others, we've had

mitt romney, jim -- the admiral. we've got david petraeus. look, here's the deal, this is a very personal decision. we can talk all we want about this, but there's one person who's going through an enormous set of very elaborate calculations as to who he wants and that's donald j. trump. only he knows what the ratings are right now. >> quickly, only 30 seconds to go, karl, i want your thoughts on a new bloomberg poll out showing president-elect trump's popularity at 50%, highest it's ever been nationally. >> look, fox news exit poll on election night 38 favorable, 61 unfavorable. i like looking at averages of polls. if you take the six most recent december, only in december, it's now 45-55, that's a change. in one month up positive 7, down on the negative 11. i suspect that we'll start shortly having more polls here that have donald trump above 50% and his favorables higher than unfavorables by the time he gets sworn in. >> great karl rove.
