>> 2012. >> he said that from the floor at senate, and you can't be held legally responsible for that. later, harry reid was asked, do you regret that? he said, absolutely not, romney didn't win, did he? fast forward to when mr. reid was -- >> so it's okay to lie. >> apparently if that -- >> if it helps you win. so this was the quote in "the huffington post" from harry reid. mitt romney is somebody i had respect for. i have none anymore. this is a man who came out big time against trump. oh, the things he said about trump. well, that's great, that's wonderful. either he wasn't telling the truth or he's a person with no character. after having said that, i go to do homage to do this guy he said awful things about. i don't think that shows much character. coming from the guy who lied about the taxes. >> so he lied about mitt romney, but he had respect for mitt romney until mitt romney started talking to donald trump about the secretary of state job. >> so romney responded strongly.
4:36 am
he says, as for mr. reid, i lost respect for him when he repeatedly lied about my taxes and later admitted to it cheerily. good riddance, mr. reid. the senate will be better served without you. >> he's learning from trump after those meetings. >> my hunch is after a couple of years when people forget about how bitter the rivalry was between them, even though donald trump is turning the page, his supporters will, i think he plays a role somewhere in there. >> maybe. >> we'll see. >> he's got plenty of time on his hands and loves public service. that right there, good riddance, harry reid, that's probably a banner we didn't think we'd ever see. but there this was. now it's gone. >> you know who's here? heather. you have something important. >> in fact, speaking of harry reid, that's what my first story is. harry reid says the reports of russian hacking are as big as the watergate scandal, and now he's calling for a 9/11 commission type panel to investigate that. nancy pelosi also says she wants

4:45 am
she says, my sister and her husband don't have money to buy christmas gifts for their four kids. i want to help without enabling them. how can i do this without harming our family dynamic? what do you say? >> well, meredith, i would suggest you sit down with your sister and just have a conversation. make sure that she's comfortable with you doing this. now, if she's not comfortable, you need to respect the boundaries. if she is, then that's great, but i would make sure to emphasize this is a gift and not a loan. >> that's a good way to point it out. so you're saying go ahead and give her the money so she can buy presents for her kids. >> yeah, it's a great gesture. it's good to be generous. and now, if this sister wasn't particularly good with money, maybe you could find out some gift ideas for the kids, go buy the toys, and then give it to the sister. >> and it'senabling the sister because it's giving the kids gifts. so it's helping them to celebrate. >> it's a win/win. meanwhile, from north carolina, thomas wrote in. he said, i'm getting a $15,000 holiday bonus. >> all right.

>> but i owe $18,000 in student loans and $24,000 to a family member, which i'm paying back at 3% interest over 15 years. that seems like a lot. >> wow. >> should i use the bonus toward my student loans or the family loan? all right, chris, what should he do? >> thomas, first of all, i want to congratulate you that you're being intentional with this holiday bonus. if i'm in your shoes, i would definitely attack the student loan first. it's only $18,000. if you pay 15 toward it, that's only going to leave you 3,000 left over. if you take on an extra job, you could have this student loan, you could get sally mae out of your life for good. now, the caveat to this is if this family loan is a low-pressure situation, then that's great. if your family is giving you grief about this, then maybe you would look at paying on the family loan first. >> but in general, you guys always talk about dave ramsey's show. i know you work for dave. y'all always talk about tackling the smaller loan first so you can get that out of the way. >> that's exactly right.
4:47 am
tackling the smallest debt first. what it does is helps us build momentum. getting out of debt has nothing to do with math or interest rates. it's about making progress. so always attack the smallest one first. >> i love the fact that a family member is giving a 3% loan. out in california, jane says this. my husband and i are both 63. he doesn't think we should put money into a 401(k) for only four years when he plans to retire. what do you think? >> that's a good question. >> well, this is a topic i'm very passionate about. i want to help people live their retirement dream. what i would do is definitely look at the 401(k). it's never too late to start saving. i talk to a lot of people on my podcast. they say, chris, is it too late? no, it's not too late, especially with your age. there are catch-up provisions that allow you to put in more than just the basic minimums. sit down with an investment professional. walk through this and understand all your options. you can do this, and you and

4:54 am
that we have received enough donations for every veteran's grave at arlington national cemetery to receive a wreath this year. >> fantastic. when you heard the news, what did you think? >> well, you know, this cause is so near and dear to my heart. any time, you know, we hear good news like this, i basically cry. if i wouldn't completely embarrass myself in the studio, i would do a few cartwheels. i won't do that to your viewers. >> what's the process of putting them out like? >> oh, it is -- it's kind of like a mixture of memorial day, fourth of july, and christmas. it's a time for us to pay our respects, to honor our service members, to you know, pay their sacrifice with the utmost respect. we really believe that the best way to honor the sacrifice of
4:55 am
our fallen service members is to take care of the families they left behind. this is a very tangible way for, you know, tens of thousands of americans to come together on that one day to do just that. >> i know you're putting them out on saturday. for the folks that are in that area, can they come out and help? >> absolutely. you know, we start early that saturday morning, and it's a free event open to the public. it's a very family friendly event. if you're in the washington, d.c., area, come on out to arlington cemetery. we also have locations -- you know, 1200 other locations throughout the country. visit the website to see if there's a location near you. >> what types of people come out? >> i'm sorry? >> what types of people come out to help you? >> oh, we have -- you know, arlington national cemetery and the national reach across america day is the one day where it doesn't matter your race, religion, sex. that day we are all americans. we are all americans saying thank you to our service members and to the gold star families.
4:56 am
>> well, thank you very much. you've made sure that every service member's grave at arlington is going to have a wreath. you're going to start that process very shortly. as you mentioned a moment ago, there are cemeteries all across the country you're also going to be visiting. do you have enough money to put wreaths on all those graves? >> unfortunately, we do not for those. so if people would like to donate, you know, there's still time to donate to those smaller cemeteries. hopefully next year, you know, we can focus a little bit more on that. regardless of where a veteran is buried, they deserve to be remembered at the holidays. i just really want to thank your viewers. "fox & friends," you all have been phenomenal. fox news has stepped up. any time that we've had a need, you all have stepped up in a big, big way. i just -- we truly appreciate it. it's not gone unnoticed. we really appreciate you. >> it's a message we love to share. bre, thank you. no soldier, no hero is going left behind on this holiday

5:02 am
wound up with 131 more votes than he did on election night. he was a happy man with good manners because he came back to say thank you, wisconsin, for making it all happen. >> that's exactly right. you know president obama on his holiday card t says happy holidays. he's saying, i'm putting merry christmas back in the holiday season. so it's right there on the podium. merry christmas and thank you. >> but i will say this. donald trump, i'm sure, is not focusing too much on it, but what the democrats are trying to do with trying to flip these electors, what they're trying to do with this russian thing and looking into that is flat out devious and destructive. >> donald trump's message to those folks is, you lost, too bad, i won, and i'm going to continue to win. listen. >> would anybody like to keep it the way it is? i don't think. we're going to win. we're going to win. we're going to win a lot. we're going to win so much you're going to go to paul ryan,

meanwhile, the thank you tour in wisconsin yesterday. it was time for republicans to come together. clearly they have, especially in wisconsin. in attendance, congressman duffy, senator ron johnson, reince priebus, and a guy named paul ryan who had some famous friction with donald trump. >> so donald trump -- are we going to hear him? >> any second. >> oh, no, i've come to appreciate him. speaker paul ryan. where is the speaker? where is he? he has been -- i'll tell you, he has been terrific. you know, honestly, he's like a fine wine. every day goes by, i get to appreciate his genius more and more. now, if he ever goes against me, i'm not going to say that. he's a great guy. we have some amazing things in store. we're going to work on taxes. we're going to work on

obamacare. he's going to lead the way, so thank you. we're going to work on the wall, paul. >> yeah, because paul has been very clear, he's not for the wall at this point. he's for securing the border. look, they had a terrible relationship before the election, just as he did with mitt romney. but in the name of unity, they have all come together, and now with particularly speaker ryan, they got to go to washington and get stuff done. >> i think they need each other. i think donald trump needs him to help him repeal and replace obamacare. he knows everything about obamacare. he likes this plan. i think he needs, paul ryan, kneads donald trump to help restore his reputation. a lot of people were angry with him. >> sadly, the republicans do not have a plan ready to go as of yet. mean while, governor rick perry got some good news a while ago. he probably knew it ahead of time. he'll be the next secretary of energy nominee if he passes the muster. congressman ryan zinke, the 23-year veteran of the navy

i thought what was unique on the stage last night was that donald trump was truly genuine in his affection and friendship with paul ryan. that friendship and that trust is going to be so important for both sides, the white house and the congress, to work together to get the policy right so we make america so sick of winning, they can't stand it anymore. and it's those two leaders that are going to be working together, helping make sure we take out those rough edges around the policy that we get this great agreement. >> there was a lot of speculation, would they ever be able to come together. if you know paul ryan like we know paul ryan, we had no doubt that this was going to happen because if you know paul ryan, you like him and you're impressed with how smart he is and how much he wants to get done. there was just a real clear sign of unity in wisconsin. >> he's a fine wine. >> right. that's important because trump wants to get a lot done and needs the speaker. all right. representative sean duffy and rachel campos-duffy joining us

people get from families a lot of times, from the traditional families you get a lot of them. that's not the case in a lot of these inner city situations. so you're looking at situations the way they are, not the way you want them to be, and you're trying to fix it. it's more than just money. you need a program. do you think that he's going to put the money behind your program to make it truly national and fully funded in a way that's going to make a massive impact? >> i think so. >> why? >> because we have probably the best program in the country. we have many years to point to. and we have many like-minded people that's behind it. so it's not like something new, something you have to research. all of that has been done. if the government steps in at this particular time and supports the private sector that we have, it'll be dine nynamite. >> right. and helping people help other people. it's more than just money.

this internal process keeps the va from the everyone gets a blue ribbon syndrome. it may be counterintuitive to the uninformed, but it works. the great stay great, the good get better. >> army vet and fox news contributor pete hegseth joins us live. so what's going on is apparently the va had this rating system that tells you whether or not a facility stinks. >> correct. >> apparently there are a bunch of them that stink, and they don't want to tell us which ones. >> and they don't want to reveal that to the american people. it looks like they're trying to do the right thing by vets. in reality, what they've got is a secret ratings system of veterans and hospitals that reveals that a lot of them are still one-star facilities. our veterans should not be going
5:48 am
to one-star facilities. and our veterans don't get to see this rating system. >> why wouldn't they want transparency so we can fix the problem? >> because this ratings system is built for bureaucrats. it's built for the va to protect itself. it says not everyone gets a blue ribbon. in fact, everyone does get a blue ribbon in this system because no one knows how bad it is, and the veterans are left wondering whether they're going to a good facility. if you put the vet at center, you make everything transparent. here's how long you're going to wait, here's how good your facility is, here's whether we have a doctor shortage. it's our job to serve you, not the other way around. >> you think they're just scared because they don't want the vets to be in an uproar when they find out their hospital or facility is the one? >> of course. it's covering your rear end. >> who's going to go to a one star when you drive 50 miles and you can go to a two or three star? >> that's the point. if you're stuck at a one star, you should have a choice to go to a private facility right next doo door to that va facility. >> going forward, what do we need to see in donald trump is the new president-elect.
5:49 am
he says he's going to be transparent, put everything on the table so we're all informed. what needs to be done? >> first thing you need to do is, in my humble opinion, not keep bob mcdonald. he's not been open and transparent about the failures of this department. then give veterans a choice. fire a whole lot of people who have been part of the this cover-up. then you need to make sure you investigate top to bottom where these problems have come from. >> when the va system was started, it was because people came back from war with unique injuries that the local guy couldn't take care of. that doesn't exist anymore with the exception of tbi and some specialized injuries. isn't it time just to forget about the va hospital and give everybody a card so they can go everywhere? >> you can give them a choice without cratering the va system. i think there are some great things, great facilities, great doctors. giving a private choice does not mean you privatize and shut down the entire system. it's a simple choice. veterans should have it. >> let's see what he does. thank you very much. next up on "fox & friends," a favorite is getting into the christmas spirit.
