christmas sweater. i have a whole wardrobe full of them. this morning we want you to sent in ugly christmas sweater photo. we will try on some later in the show. >> bells. we were talking about edible christmas sweaters the other day. >> one year i had edible christmas sweater. eat marshmallows off of it and s'mores. >> if you can combine two things, food and a sweater into one. see if you can top that off. >> we're going to try this morning. let's talk some politics this morning. the president, every year right before he goes on a 17-day vacation to hawaii. a postmortem of the year looking back at this year in his administration. it was a rough year for democrats. a really rough year. but he walked an interesting line in his assessment of what happened this year. blaming both russia but also a little bit of hillary clinton for the problems. listen. >> based on uniform intelligence assessments, the russians were

responsible for hacking the dnc. i can assure the public that there was not the kind of tampering with the voting process that was a concern, the votes that were cast were counted. they were counted appropriately. our goal continues to be to send a clear message to russia or others not to do this to us because we can do stuff to you. the thing we have to spend the most time on because it's the thing we have the most control over is how do we make sure that we are showing up in places where i think democratic policies are needed, where people feel as if they are not being hurt. and where democrats are characterized as coastal, liberal latte sipping, you know, politically correct

out-of-touch folks. we have to be in those communities. >> interesting. >> it was so interesting to hear president obama talk about it in that tone. saying we have got to move away from liberal latte sipping tone of ours because we are not connecting with the people who need our help. in his words, the most. that's exactly the message i have heard when i'm out talking to many of the democrats who ended up voting for mr. trump is we're sick of talk and no action here. when it came to hillary clinton she was not inspiring enough. she didn't give us a reason to want to go out and vote for her. let's put the russians aside for main and talk about what actually impacted this election the most. >> what if you have become latte sipping coastal liberal politically correct out-of-touch folks which so many of them have been. you can say that's what we have become and we need to go there and present a different message. what's the message they need to present especially when you need to learn from the elections. so far they are still pointing at the russians alluded a little bit to hillary clinton and reaching the constituencies.

when you are attacking postmortem what they failed to do hard to move forward. >> listen to the tease, if you are going to do something to us we're going to do something you. if i poke me we're going to poke you back. that was interesting when he was talking about the russians like unpack that a little bit. what was he saying? the votes were fine. we actually tallied everything up. he was talking about fake news. that that is actually more nefarious, somehow than hacking into databases. >> getting nothing but straight news for years. playing it down the middle from the "new york times." >> exactly. >> he wouldn't have had anything to contribute to the problem. >> they totally predicted the election outcome. >> which is fabulous. he did point it out saying it is our partisanship, in the media that is to blame what russia is doing. here is what he said about that. >> our vulnerability to russia and any other foreign

power is directly related to how divided partisan, dysfunctional our political process is if fake news that's being released by some foreign government is almost identical to reports that are being issued through partisan news venues, then it's not surprising that that foreign propaganda will have a greater effect. it doesn't seem that farfetched compared to some of the other stuff that folks are hearing from domestic propagandists. >> so foreign governments planting fake news in an effort to undermine the election. >> he is saying russia. that's who he is alluding

to. all these news stories and aalt right conservative stories people believed in them. never once in 90 minutes did he look in the cam rand ache at a credit or responsibility for the fact america is a pretty divided country. maybe it is his policies. maybe when you ram obamacare down america's throats with only democratic vote. set red lines and don't enforce them. terrible policies and people like it they react to. >> it that's a great point. >> you hear the clicking of cameras and the crowds and down in florida trump and pence on thank you tour. i-4 corridor is where all eyes were. >> i have done that i remember when my dad was running four years ago. i lived in florida. it's an important area. he was in orlando last night and that was obviously such an important state for him to win. >> huge. it's not the merry christmas tour. >> no. it's the american tour. but, also, he is very --

part of the reason some people appreciated mr. trump at this point in history was the fact that he pointed directly to political correctness and how he is anything but. and he is continuing to point fingers at the media. and he also was talking about "time's" person of the year. let's call it the man person of the year or woman person of the year. here is what he said last night. >> "time" magazine and the "financial times" big deal, just gave me person of the year. person. [cheers] >> they should give it to you because this is a movement, folks. this isn't me. so in the past it was called map of the year. now it's called personal of the year. so, here's the question what could do you like better, ready? do you like person of the year? [cheers and applause] well, they want to be politically correct. >> that is absolutely gold. >> he will have it framed and put on his office wall and put in trump tower. >> i bet it already is. >> and it should be. >> when you hear him talk about that at these rallies hear why people in the campaign connected to him. he makes them feel like he is their friend. wants their opinion. tweets out all morning long makes them feel they are important it him. >> trying to get messages out through the mainstream media that hasn't worked well for him. he doesn't need the mainstream media at all. >> he also speaks the way we speak around the table. >> big league. >> that's kind of garbage. why can't it be man of the year. if a woman wins, she is the woman of the year. you know it's political correctness and it bleedz through everything. lousy linemen in front of me. what kind of play will you expect from them the next time? i'm just stunned by this. >> that seems to be the message we are hearing from hillary clinton. she was speaking to some donors just two nights ago, talking about russia and basically putting the blame on that for her losing the election. here is what she said the other night. >> voters made their decisions in the final days, breaking against me because of the fbi letter from fbi director comey. and nate silver believes, i happen to believe this, that that letter most-likely made the difference in the outcome. vladimir putin himself directed the covert cyber attacks against our electoral system. against our democracy. apparently because he has a personal beef against me. this is not just an attack against me and my campaign,

although that may have added fuel to it, this is an attack against our country. >> as you said, governor, it's been a tough year for democrats. and when you don't look in the mirror and see the blame that might actually be yourself and maybe the policies you were putting forward, you point fingers at everybody else. we also heard from michelle obama. she spoke with oprah i think it was yesterday or the day before. she was basically talking about how after this election what it feels like when americans have no hope. here's what she said. >> your husband's administration everything, the election was all about hope. do you think that this administration achieved that? >> yes. i do. because we feel the difference now. >> yeah. >> see, now we're feeling whatnot having hope feels like. you know. hope is necessary. it's a necessary concept. and barack just didn't talk

about hope because he thought it was just a nice slogan to get votes. i mean, he and i and so many believe that -- what else do you have if you don't have hope? >> governor, what is she saying there? >> you know, with all due respect to the first lady, i am sitting in d.c. this morning. and i thought about when i came up here yesterday that i needed to take shots to make sure i don't get infected whatever it is gets into people they're completely out of touch from the reality of living in this bubble. the fact is if you look at what has happened since the election. the dow is hipght hitting almost 20,000. people going back to work. companies like ford and carrier sitting down with the president-elect. the man hasn't even taken office yet and already talking about how they can bring jobs back there is a real sense of optimism and hope about people going back to work and having control of our borders again. i'm just stunned when i hear her say that, you know, everything has been coming up roses for eight years and

from washington, d.c. with more on the president's final news conference of the year. good morning, garrett. >> good morning, y'all. the president certainly covered a lot of ground in his final end of the year press conference. front and center was russia's interference in our election. both republican and democrat lawmakers have been critical of president obama's handling of the russian directed cyber hacking campaign. but yesterday mr. obama defended his administration's response which he said actually began back in september when he met with russian president vladimir putin on the sidelines of the g-20 summit and warned him there would be serious consequences if russia didn't, quote, cut it out. >> our goal continues to be to send a clear message to russia or others not to do this to us because we can do stuff to you. but, it is also important for us to do that in a thoughtful, methodical way. some of it we do publicly. some of it in a way they

sad news. an officer is shot after a traffic stop turns deadly. the scene unfolding in a wal-mart parking lot in dallas, oregon. officials are saying three officers pulled over the suspect on suspicion of a dui. the suspect then turned his gun on an officer shooting him in the leg. he was rushed to the hospital where he is now recovering this morning. state police say the suspect was shot and did die on the scene. and the stun of terrorists of usama bin laden denied into egypt. omar bin laden and his wife arriving in cairo international airport this morning. after checking his saudi airport security officials found his name on a list banned from entering the country. both deported to turkey couple also denied entry back in 2008. and the obama mass landing in hawaii just a short time ago for their last vacation as the first family. president obama holding melania's hand a --maliyah's had them.

the trump bump. look at the feeling. look at the animal spirit in america. look at the return of a feeling that we can achieve or we have a shot at starting a business. those are the things. you want to talk about job growth, how about job loss by small businesses. more failing, less started. now with trump we'll see what happens. >> what about that side of it, richard, this idea that we're seeing a rally, the dow hitting 20,000. small businesses getting excited about what a trump presidency might mean for their bottom lines? isn't that a form of hope? >> i think, listen, don't get me wrong, i said at the beginning and i said in my talking points that i sent over to the producers. here's the thing. 50% of america who likes donald trump. 50% of america who doesn't like donald trump. what this election shows us is that our country is divided. you don't need talking points to see that talk to the american people and figure that out. now, what we -- what donald trump has got to do over the next four years in his first 100 days is find a way to bring americans together. and bashing the first lady, which donald trump didn't

intelligence community is talking about the scope, nature, and intent. what does that mean? we don't know what that means because david nunez, the chairman of the house intelligence committee has asked the intelligence agencies to appear and tell inte what they know. but they have refused because there is a fierce battle going on behind the scenes among the 17 agencies about actually what happened. you know, this is all kind of smoke and mirrors. when you stop to think about the cia didn't know that india and pakistan got nuclear weapons. they didn't know about the fall of the soviet union. they missed everything, including the weapons of mass destruction. now they're saying they know for sure? they don't know for sure. >> and the fbi disagrees. >> that's right. >> and there is disagreement interriblely as you said. also don't know whether the intent as you mentioned was it throw the election for

donald trump or to discredit our system. if indeed they did hack it, what they were trying to do. >> i have been told that, you know, on the one hand that president obama is putting kind of a calm, no drama obama face in front of the american public but line the scenes what we are really seeing is what we saw with michelle when she was interviewed by oprah winfrey saying hope is all lost. there is a lot of sense of anger inside the white house. and i think they put the pressure on comey at the, director of the fbi to get on the team. i think knowing how comey behaves because is he a very political guy he said okay. i'll get on the team but let's actually find out whether putin really had

it out warning. so, he went with that one. look, the problem here is -- i don't mean to be glib on this because this is very, very serious. do you have to be appropriate in your response. particularly in this world that we live in today with cyber security issues. part of the problem with cyber warfare. however you want to refer to it is the attribution. identifying the points of origin. then you have got to figure out what is on par? what is a response? because these things can escalate and we are in a new world now, where this is new territory for all the countries out there. so he is right. the president is right in the sense that you have to be very cautious. but the problem with president obama's situation is he has lost all leverage with putin and the russian government over the past few years. he doesn't have, from their perspective, he doesn't have any credibility. so they don't, you know, when he sits down and says have you got to cut it out, there is going to be cobs sequences. they already watched him. they rolle rolled in to georgia and ukraine and took crimea.

they watched what has happened in syria as russians and iranians have built up their influence over the past several years. they don't believe it when he says "cut it out." >> that's a great segue way at the press conference yesterday that president obama held, he also talked about america standing in the world. i want to play a really quick clip and get to you respond. >> almost every country on earth sees america as stronger and more respected today than they did eight years ago. nerd, by so many measures, our country is stronger and more prosperous than it was when we started. it's a situation that i'm proud to leave for my successor. >> hold on, mike, he says we are stronger over the last eight years. a little different tune than what you were just saying. >> yeah. i guess the president and i disagree on this one. look, i respect that he's trying to set the table for his legacy as he walks out the door. that's what every president does. but, i don't understand which world he's living in right now.

because, you know, if you travel overseas or you just sit and objectively study what's happening overseas in the various areas where we have crises and hot spots now, it's hard to back up that argument with actual facts or evidence. we have had a foreign policy over the last several years during the course of this current administration that's been inconsistent in its messaging. it has not followed through. and that creates chaos. and as we have tried to back off the world stage, as the president obama has tried to say, look, rightly so if the sense of course you want to focus on here at home. of course we want to focus on america. he has been backing off of world leadership. when you do that somebody is going to try to take that topped off position. and you create chaos and create opportunity for countries that do not have our best interest the at heart. >> absolutely. mike baker, former cia operative. you know these things well. well-said. lack of leadership creates a vacuum. >> thank you.

>> no, i don't think hillary clinton is completely unfit to be president. i think she is imminently qualified. she also won the popular vote by 3 million. so, no. i certainly would not be opposing that. >> you are an elector. you are going to be voting on monday for mr. trump. how do you respond to this petition? i hear you have received thousands of letters of threats, right? >> yeah. well, it's out of hand when you have such a minority group of people, such a small group of people that are pushing so hard against a system where millions, if not hundreds of millions of people still appreciate this whole system of democracy. you know, daniel said that his opinion is that hillary clinton is more qualified. well, that's why we vote. you know, they often forget that electoral college when you look at a state like arizona we have 11 electoral college members, these 11 votes are going to donald trump because he won the popular vote in arizona. he won the popular vote in most of the states is why he is up to 306. not just a few of these

and i think he was spot on. i think, you know, it was a reflection, you know, needing to get in these communities. liberals need to go out in communities and talk to voters this those areas. used to be liberal strongholds, west virginia. what happened there? that was bill clinton territory. >> we whin we talk about economics. i think the party wins who talks more about economics. if we both talk about economics. both republicans and democrats. i feel like democrats have the best chance at winning and, again, it doesn't mean you have to give up your progressive values or change a position on a progressive issue. it just means the emphasis needs to be on what's on people's minds. and what's on people's minds is their own economic status. their own wages, their own pension, their own security. healthcare, whatnot. when we talk about those issues, we win in places like west virginia. we got beat by 28% in rural communities. that's not accept. >> well, when you listen to mr. trump, he will say you also need the right messenger to talk about the issues that the american people cares about. >> that surprises me that

donald trump would say that. >> i know. but when you look at the democratic bench and who is sort of next up to lead the party to success, and when asked people in the party who their top choices are the average age is 75. that's a little bit high. >> joe biden. >> bernie sanders. >> elizabeth warren? >> that's bit misleading those are the three most popular people biden was vice president. bernie sanders ran for president. and elizabeth warren has been a famous name before she even got into politics. it's a little bit skewed. >> who are the incoming people? >> i think you look at people like cory booker who is a great young leader. i think we have a huge stable in the house of representatives joe crowley our caucus chair great young leader emerging. others over the next year or two. >> you would say there is a bench? >> i want to ask you said the economic piece when you are talking economics. there is cultural aspect to this. you hear barack obama saying elite coastal, you know, politically correct. and then you hear -- you

watch a guy like donald trump say i'm going to say merry christmas. and why tonight we say man of the year? and your average american goes yeah, why are we bending to all of these political elite that tell me to be politically correct? how do you fix that? there is a sense that you are totally out of touch with people in america. >> i say merry christmas. >> your party doesn't. >> if you're jewish i'm not going to tell you merry christmas, right? and if i don't know what you are, i'm going to say happy holidays. i may say merry christmas too to people. that to me is not a major issue. i say merry christmas. a lot of democrats say merry christmas. i think that's one issue that just tries to divide everybody up. but the reality of it is. >> or radical islamic terrorism or other aspects of political correctness goes awry. now you are saying extremist as opposed to calling the enemy what it is. isn't that a disconnect for people. >> it could be on some instances. i think most of all, regardless of what we're talking about on those issues, if you are talking about bread and butter issues, people don't really care about whether you're bay or straight.

they want to know how you are going to feed your family. looking at people in youngstown, ohio how am i going to feed my family. can i have a secure pension? can i afford to send my kids to college. >> barack obama saying after eight years more prosperous than we were. safer and prosperous. yet they lost the election. i don't understand we f. we were more prosperous and better off than we were eight years ago. we are healed now. people have jobs. did you believe that or do you disagree with the president? >> the aggregate we are doing better off. if you have money in the stock market and it's almost at 20,000, you're doing better off. >> not a lot of democrats make the wall street arguments. trying to make a middle class argument. >> well, that was my next caveat is that most people don't have money in the stock market. most people in my congressional district don't have money in the stock market. they can't even save. they are living paycheck to paycheck. 75% of americans are living paycheck to paycheck. if they lose one paycheck they're, their life comes completely unraveled. in that sense we haven't

secretary. >> can you announce your own? i guess you could, yeah. all right, news about russia, president obama vowing retaliation against russia for election hacking. blasting the media for obsessing over the e-mail scandal as a result. >> live for us in washington, d.c. with more on the president's final news conference of the year before off to hawaii now for 17 days, good morning, garrett. >> good morning, abby, pete and clayton. yeah, usually these end of the year press conferences are where the president will take a victory lap of sorts and list out everything his administration has accomplished overed year. this year though in president obama's final end of the year press conference it was almost entirely about russia. in particularly, the kremlin's interference in our election. the president said the cyber hacking campaign was orchestrated at the highest levels of the russian government. and without specifically pointing the finger at president vladimir putin, he added that almost nothing happens in russia without putin's approval.

>> our goal continues to be to send a clear message to russia, or others, not to do this to us. because we can do stuff to you. but it is also important for us to do it in a thoughtful, methodical way. some of it we do publicly. some of it we will do in a way that they know but not everybody will. >> president obama defended his administration's response to the cyber hacking and said it began back in september when he met with russian president vladimir putin on the sidelines of the g20 summit and warned him there would be serious consequences if russia didn't, quote, cut it out. mr. obama also had some harsh words for the media's coverage of the hacks during the election. and for focusing so much on the leaked e-mails, which he described as an obsession. >> i'm finding it a little curious that everybody's suddenly acting surprised that this looked like it was

disadvantaging hillary clinton because you guys wrote about it every day. every single leak about every little juicy tidbit of political gossip. this was an obsession that dominated the news coverage. >> and president obama was also asked on his way out if this was his last press conference before he leaves office next month, and he said he'll have to think about it. until then though, as you mentioned, the president and his first family will be in hawaii over the next two weeks for their christmas vacation. and looking outside who wouldn't want to be there now? >> i know. we'll have a lot of time to think about it over there, 17 days. >> thank you, garrett. >> thanks, garrett. we want to bring in sean spicer this morning. we've been talking about him all morning. there he is. is that a christmas tie, by the way? >> it is. >> an ugly christmas tie? >> an ugly sweater tie. >> it's a good one. >> i didn't say it. we want to get some news this morning, but we want to first talk about what the president said yesterday at this news

conference in talking about hacking and basically said three months ago i went to vladimir putin and said cut it out. and it's a big problem interference in the u.s. presidential election. and we should look at it. what's your response? >> well, i agree. i mean, no foreign entity should ever be interfering with our elections or undermining the integrity of them. but it's a very interesting story how it's evolved. prior to the election it was the department of homeland security briefing us and the campaigns saying, you know, we have high confidence in our election systems, the way that we vote, ie, various systems throughout the country, paper ballots, machines, et cetera, are such that no one could interfere with an election and we need everyone to stand firm. and then donald trump comes out and has a resounding win and suddenly the tune changes real quick because the presumed coronation of hillary clinton didn't go as planned. so, look, i think we can all condemn any entity from

interfering but there's zero evidence it had any effect on the outcome. donald trump won resoundingly with 306 electoral votes, 223 counties throughout this country including multiple that president obama carried handily. so i'm a little concerned at how the left is trying to focus on delegitimizing the election. they lost. they lost because they didn't have an effective message like donald trump. and i think that they should instead of focusing on that, you know, are trying to deflect and talk about this whole issue. >> there's a lot of attempts to discredit, no doubt. >> i wanted your thoughts because mr. trump was up tweeting early this morning slamming china's seizure of a u.s. drone. china steals united states navy research drone in international waters, rips it out of the water and takes it to china in unprecedented act. chris murphy tweets, a 7:30 a.m. saturday escalation of

diplomatic crisis with china via twitter with misspelling. when you're talking about something as sensitive as our relationship to china, is that how things should be handled? as you know, one tweet could set off serious alarm bells in that relationship. >> well, it's a fact. i mean, it's a fact. he tweeted out what happened. something that was reported in the media yesterday. i'm somewhat shocked that people are surprised that he's tweeting exactly what happened. china came along, took an asset of the united states government's and brought it to china. i think mr. trump is rightly expressing the concerns and frustrations of our government right now -- or just as a citizen, frankly. i think we should all be outraged and i don't think it's anything different than reported in the media yesterday. >> there's a sense over the years that things like this overt or covert have been ignored. enemies in iran also taking people hostage. now they're taking drones, other instances where we've been slighted. what does a tweet like this say about how president-elect trump

will handle these types of flash points? because i think it's easy to dismiss and say it's twitter, it's terrible. i mean, there's thought behind these things. how would he react differently than president obama has? >> well, you saw it with the carrier instance as well. i mean, he's not going to sit back and just let stuff happen either domestically or internationally. he is going to pick up the phone. he's going to get things done. you saw how he saved those jobs out in indiana for carrier. he's the kind of guy that's going to end business as usual and get things done. he's a man of action. i think we've seen it already through the transition. and we're going to see it really forcefully on january 20th going forward. >> i want to get your take on something hillary clinton said on thursday night. she was meeting with a group of donors to thank them for their support during her campaign. and she seems like inside we had ed klein on earlier and he seemed to suggest that sort of inside that bubble that there's no way that they are taking responsibility for losing this election. and she said to those people in the room the other night she said, look, james comey

releasing that letter definitely changed some votes in those swing states and that is probably why we lost this election. what do you make of that? >> i mean, i think they're probably at stage eight in their 12 step program of grief. look, this all happened because hillary had -- i mean, if she hadn't had a server, if she hadn't written what she wrote, i think there's a denial of responsibility on her part for doing some of the things that caused this. comey wouldn't have been investigating her for the secret server if she hadn't evaded government regulations in the first place. if she hadn't set up the server. there is a degree of personal responsibility that hillary clinton and her team have to take. but, you know, look, if this is how they want to focus on it, you know, so be it. but i just think that if you want to look at it objectively, at some point they need to take responsibility for their actions. >> all right. we do have a fox news alert to get to about mr. trump

nominating congressman -- director of the office of management and budget. first we thought we were going to have you onto announce you were going to become the next press secretary, but your thoughts quickly on this latest news? >> mick mulvaney is a fiscal hawk, fighting against government waste, efficiency. this is somebody keeping in line with what you've seen with the rest of the trump picks for his cabinet. he's going to get things done, he's going to tackle the $20 trillion budget deficit that we have right now and start to chip away to get rid of government efficiencies, find outdated projects and plans and government waste. but he is going to be a real champion of the american taxpayer in that office. >> what about press secretary? you as press secretary, if that were true would you as press secretary make your own announcement. >> right here on "fox & friends". >> right here wearing a christmas tie? >> well, there's been no

terrorist, osama bin laden, is denied entry into egypt. omar bin laden and his wife arriving at cairo international airport this morning from qatar. but after checking his saudi passport, security officials found his name on a list of those banned pr entering the country. both were deported to turkey. the couple was also denied entry back in 2008. and the obama family in hawaii just a short time ago for last vacation as the first family. president obama holding malia's hands as they walk down the steps of air force one with sasha and mrs. obama behind them. the first family visits hawaii for christmas every year. visiting where the president grew up. they will be there for a full 17 days. i love this story, a christmas wreath for heroes who paid the ultimate price thanks to generous viewers like you happening right now, wreaths across america placing christmas wreaths on every headstone in arlington national cemetery. that is more than 400,000 graves. the whole thing made possible after the group asked for donations on our show and you

we have a lot of snow still to deal with and some freezing rain that's really problematic across the road. so it's saturday, if you can stay off the roads at all, especially across areas of the mid atlantic into the northeast, do so you'll be saving yourself a lot of trouble. we have all kinds of winter weather advisories in effect across the central part of the country around the great lakes in toward part areas the northeast. some spots five to eight inches of snow across northern areas of new england. but the cold air is what we've been dealing with for such a long time. it's that pink color, feels like minus 39 in billings, minus 24 in fargo. you get the idea. i want to take us through the next couple days. cold air still in place here across the plains. go to sunday, still here around the great lakes. and then by monday it starts to retreat back up into canada where we'd like to see it going to tuesday, wednesday, you get the idea. the worst of it that pink, that very cold air goes away and we have what is going to be a much warmer like 30 is warmer in minnesota for much of this coming week. >> yeah, i'll take it. >> incredibly cold air gone. >> there's nothing like going to your car which i do many times

prosperous now than we were when president obama came into office. >> in a way that's disingenuous. we were in the throes of a major, major economic meltdown that kind of happens once every 50 to 100 years. i think it's unfortunate that barack obama would want to use that as, you know, his hallmark. in other words he wants to compare his presidency to the worst period in like three generations instead of saying, hey, compared to just typical when a president gets a chance to govern our nation for eight years, what usually happens? i'll tell you what didn't happen. we didn't get one year of 3% growth. i'll tell you what else happened. millions and millions of people left the job market. we did create jobs, but a lot of them are low paying jobs. in fact, people who lost their jobs at the beginning of the great recession often got a job later that didn't even pay as much as the one they had before. so -- >> you're saying it's the size and the pace. there were jobs that were added -- >> sure, there's no doubt about that. >> temporary and not as many. >> we've got the most amazing

economy in the history of mankind. let's never forget that. and it's elastic. the way it's designed the way it's always worked sometimes the worse something gets, the stronger it comes back. this time it got really bad, and it only creeped back. for instance he's talking about the inflection point in poverty last year. of course it finally had a big move, but look where it is overall. it went down every single year under his presidency until last year. >> talk about trump likes to pay lip service to this we're going to bring jobs back, but a lot of those jobs as you know are automated jobs and they're not coming back. so they're being replaced by robots. even if you did bring the manufacturing back, the robots would be doing that. how do we confront this new economy? >> this week the ceo of ibm wrote a letter, ginny, she essentially says, listen, forget about blue collar jobs and white collar jobs. there are going to be millions of jobs created by necessarily

don't need a four-year degrees, these are the quote/unquote vocational jobs of next century, people who learn how to code. people can fix those robots, people who can do may want nans on those robots. those empty factories have been to retro fitted to fit in those robots. amazing opportunity, but the big complaint and big fear is we may not have the right workforce to do it right now. >> and you need the regulatory environment and the tax environment so the companies want to do those types of things here as opposed to elsewhere. >> there's no doubt about it. this is what we're seeing with the stock market and the sentiment across the board whether it's manufacturing, whether it's home building, all has to do with the fact that people believe -- professionals, not just folks who are out there, you know, going to political rallies, but professionals in several industries to your point that because you have a republican president who's promised some dramatic changes and a republican congress, we're going to get those through. so that part should be the low hanging fruit. that should be the low hanging fruit. that's why the stock market is up through the roof.
