that's why "the times" is failing. i went up to see him three weeks ago. and i had a great meeting. everything was great but they'll never change. they'll never change, jeff, no matter what you do. >> i should have prefaced that clip, properly. most of the speech was about policy. he should we say merry christmas or man of the year, but then he also hit back against paul krugman and "new york times" for some things they said about him. >> paul tweeted this. he writes a weekly column for "the new york times." rightly a cloud of illit jit maes. interesting incentives for trump. some other large-scale attack could legitimize trump. everyone would come together and be rallied around him. >> there's a lot to unpack in

those 47 characters because not a lot of words you can get into a tweet. he was taking a shot at president bush and saying -- these are words you should never be saying. >> he said he would induce one or create one or do -- in order to bolster his own polling numbers. if his numbers don't look good, then maybe donald trump is so off his rocker, he will create an international incident to make himself look legitimate. >> if you try to insight violence or something with china or something with russia and trying to stoke that fire and that would somehow legitimize him as president. >> democrats saying some of the same things and trying to rally now these electors. of course, tomorrow is the big vote. the electoral college vote tomorrow. you saw hollywood message trying

to get those electors at the last minute change their vote saying be a kaunsh yenshs object objector. >> this is an election you normally hear nothing about. the electoral college vote happens at every state across the country. but for the next 24 hours. you turn on any other network, it's all you're going to hear. you hear all the news talking about fake news. this is fake news. 38 electors to change. and yet tens of thousands of people are huresing these electors with death threats. >> the one person who said they would change would change for another republican, not for hillary. this one republican saying i might switch by vote and vote in another republican in the ticket not hillary clinton. >> we talked to a number of electors on the show getting these notes and thousands and thousands of e-mails.

terrible, terrible things said about them and their family and things they want to do them. that's a sad situation. you also have john podesta who was the chairman of hillary clinton's campaign. you think the election is over and go on vacation and start enjoying their life a little bit, but he's out there still talking about what happened. the election is over and the damage is done, but the threat from russia and other potential aggressors remain urgent and demand the serious and sustained response. the administration should brief members of the electoral college on the extent and manner of russia's interference in our election before they vote tomorrow on december 19th. >> more pointing the finger on russia and we have to hear what russia did here because they are to blame for the fact that hillary clinton ran a terrible campaign and lost. this is what she said. >> first of all, the investigation isn't even over. so, i think it's impossible to characterize it in any one way or the other.

i don't know where mr. podesta is obtaining the information. >> he said a long "new york times" story. >> because of his involvement in the campaign he will have a certain interest in this and a certain view of that. again, i allow him his opinion. everyone has a great deal of respect for him. i allow him that opinion, but i disagree with that, if that is, in fact, the characterization he's trying to make. >> so, she's standing by the fbi and the decisions that they made and how james comey handled this. when this all broke, behind the scenes a lot of disconnect and disagreement and now she's saying, no, no, no. i'll back what they did. >> for some analysis on this. newt gingrich has been looking at this and he had this take on john podesta's comment. listen to newt gingrich. >> by hacking into the e-mails, they let the american people know things that were true, i

mean the russians didn't write the e-mails. hillary clinton did. john podesta did. everything that is really embarrassing and damaging came either from bill clinton, hillary clinton, their top staff or john podesta their campaign manager. their argument is really what they wrote is really embarrassing not their fault it became public and for making public how bad what they were doing was. you're a judge, i'm not a lawyer, but it strikes me, i wouldn't want to take their case into court and try to defend their logic. >> such a great point. the russians to force hillary clinton to put a server in her basement or john podesta to click on a link but we know they have been doing this and every other country is trying to get information from us. >> i don't think anyone wants those conversations and not fun for them to experience, but to your point, whose fault was this at the end of the day? who is to blame? >> look what we saw from debbie

among those injured a 4-year-old girl fighting for her life this morning. >> it was like a scene in a movie. the tree was slowly coming down and whoever was under it running straight through it not moving to the side. >> so scary. at least e20 people were trapped by falling branches. it may have been weakened by a five-year drought. to some extreme weather now continues this morning. deadly ice covered roads and heavy snow hammering the midwest causing hundreds of car wrecks. in baltimore a deadly 67-car pileup killing two people, including the driver of that tanker that exploded when it flipped over. the storm has killed 13 people since tuesday. after more than 300 rounds of golf, what is one more. president obama is in hawaii for his last christmas vacation as president of the united states. and to no one's surprise he wasted no time rallying up his full motorcade and heading to the golf course to tee up.

back. he is also saying we need to be tough with china. isn't that the kind of thing we want out of a president? >> i think being tough is fine. i think making sure america and that usa is at the forefront of everything that goes on around the world and not being the world's policemen but making sure we're there in a really respected way. they just lost the election where they got 2.5 more votes than the republicans. a lot of people who will continue to throw madness. but i think the country needs to come together now. we need to make sure americas right out in the front and watching and making sure everything is going to be merry. >> what do our presidents do? do we want a president to be strong with china? >> yeah, absolutely. i think this is a unifier for the country. this is an early test for president-elect trump. he has not yet taken the oath of office, obviously. but this problem is going to linger into the beginning part of his presidency. president bush had a similar type of challenge and the dictators all over the world and the authoritarians and the

jobs could be saved, as well. in order to keep your severance package you would have to train your mexican replacement. what is the status of your job and how do you respond to what michelle obama had to say that there is no hope? >> well, the first lady is entitled to her opinion. i know the campaign was hope and change. we've seen a lot of hope. we've seen a lot of change. and that being american workers' jobs are being outsourced to other countries. so, i'm not going to down the first lady. she's entitled to her opinion. but right now i'm one of the ones that's living on hope. >> why are you living on hope? i mean, christmas is right around the corner. how are you feeling at this moment? >> honestly, very depressed. >> well, but, yet, it's in limbo what will happen ultimately.

severance packages. are you going to have your job? even though what happened down the road at carrier a lot of jobs were saved. hope is not a reality, it is the idea that something could change. if it's not your job, it's other jobs in this country that donald trump can help bring back. >> a lot of places in this country are facing the same dilemma. so, yeah, we're all working on hope, praying for hope. we're hoping for a change in the attitude of the ceos of these corporations that are out for nothing but corporate greed and the almighty dollar. i know mr. trump has mentioned our name at various times. as a group, yes, we're still holding on. we still have a few months left that maybe he can intervene. but if it doesn't happen, it doesn't map happen.

some big changes coming for almost everybody and a lot of people are going to be happy about this. your actual air temperature. minus 34 air temperature. omaha minus 10 and factor in some wind and and how about that. not feeling good at all. it's been big changes over the last 24 hours. this is your temperature change in the last 24 hours. all about the wind direction and that is brought in down the major cold all the way down across parts of texas and in towards the deep south. warming up all along the eastern s seaboard temporarily. rain will move through with a couple potential thunderstorms and look how quickly temperatures drop off throughout the northeast today. down in the southeast, pick your city and take a look at what happens. we start out warm in places like atlanta and birmingham and then the bottom drops out and very cold by 9:00 p.m. tonight. you're at 15 in tulsa, oklahoma. into the northern plains we're starting off really, really cold throughout the day. we warm up a little bit getting

breaking america's security laws. in 2013, an investigation into perez's activities was launched while he was replacing eric holder as u.s. attorney general. that investigation found perez used his personal e-mail account more than 1,200 times, including to leak nonpublic information to "new york times" and planned parenthood. he fought the investigations every step of the way refusing to supply a subpoena. in all, congress will review 34 of those private e-mails but still found he likely violated the spirit and record of the federal act. 12 separate individuals on that private account. in a statement, the rnc slammed perez calling him a "left wing radical that would put the dnc further out of touch with average americans." >> more complications.

we are back with a cool story that will make you proud to be an american. a gold star mother making it her mission to honor her fallen son. in 2012, that man, marine corporal philip mcgee killed in action fighting in afghanistan. he promised to finish college upon his return. that never happened. his mom was not about to let his wish go unfulfilled. she decided to go back to school for both of them. phyllis mcgee just graduated from ut arlington on friday. she's got a smile on her face. rightfully so. she joins us now. phyllis, what an amazing story. first, tell us about your son who fought for our country. >> philip was a strong, health conscious as far as his bodybuilder and a great love of our family. >> so it was just, i believe,

ten days before he was scheduled to come home and no one can imagine how that feels. when did you decide, hey, i'm going to overcome this tragedy and i want to go to school and finish what he started? >> probably from day one when they told me -- i refused to sit down. i stayed standing. i knew my son would never have sat down. as the months progressed, i needed to do something to keep me busy. i decided if philip hadn't gotten to finish college and i never finished college raising my seven children, that i would go back to school and finish for the both of us. >> on the screen right there, there's a picture of three marines. i should note you had three sons in the marine. the other two also serving in the marine corps. service runs deep in your family, obviously. >> i have two sons still active duty serving.

and my husband is 24-year retired master sergeant for the united states air force. >> wow. i'd say it does run in your family. >> tell us what it felt like to walk across the stage and get that degree and fulfill the promise that you made. >> it was overwhelming. the response to my the most memory of philip and for my gold star moms out there so i could lift them up was absolutely wonderful. i wanted to do it and i succeeded. it feels absolutely fantastic. >> you sure did. >> what was your degree in? and what do you want to do with it? >> my degree was in interdisciplinary studies with a minor in political science and a minor in political justice. due to the fact that i've been mentoring my gold star moms that i have been mentoring since my son was killed, i had would like to go into further work, i've

steve mnuchin is going to shepherd through tax cuts for individuals and business. in a sense you're right, when you lower tax rates, initially the government takes in less money. that's initially. but the whole point of the tax cuts is that eventually, very quickly, actually, you start to grow the economy. as you grow the economy, more people are at work, wages better, in comes more money to the treasury, cancels it out. in fact, you grow treasury revenues as opposed to shrink them. what this cabinet is going to do is reverse all of the major policy initiatives of president obama. tom price is going to health and human services. he's going to reverse obamacare. steve mnuchin goes to treasury, he's reversing tax increases and -- he's going to reverse costly green regulations. rick perry is going to energy. reverse restrictions on domestic

energy production. >> or close it. >> long, long, list. all this is designed to stimulate the economy, juice it, get some growth there. we've had 2% growth for eight long years. you've got the prospect now of 4% growth in a not too distant future. >> it's not like he hasn't been talking to people from both sides of the aisle. if you watch trump tower all day long, he's got a lot of liberals talking about energy and economy. he wanted to hear both sides. who he's picking are obviously more conservative. >> we've seen al gore, rahm emanuel, leonardo dicaprio. people from the left have walked through trump tower, given their advice, he's heard their opinion. but mr. trump has hired conservatives across the board. it's a very conservative cabinet. >> you mentioned energy. how key is unleashing energy to the kind of economy we need? >> it's extremely important. president-elect trump wants to bring back manufacturing jobs.

james clapper, the director ever national intelligence, asking for an intel briefing on russian hacking before they vote. 80 electors but only one of them is a republican, 79 of them are democrat. it seems pretty transparently an effort by democrats and democratic electors to overturn the election and get someone other than trump to be the next president or even if he's going to be the president to somehow undercut his credibility. this is the only area in which i disagree with pete. that is still a news story. even if something isn't going to happen, the fact there are democratic electors and john podesta has joined it and hollywood celebrities have joined, it's still news. >> where does it go after this? let's say it goes the way folks think it's going to. what's the next firewall? >> that would be it. then in early january, when the new congress comes in, then

there's a -- they count the votes and joint session of congress and it's the vice president who presides over that. that was most infamous or most sort of touching back in 2001 when it was al gore who had to count the votes that certified that george w. bush had beaten him by a single electoral vote. the other question is, what would happen if in fact -- they don't have to vote for somebody who even ran. they can vote for anybody they wanted. if nobody got 270 electoral votes, it goes to the house of representatives. it's kind of an interesting constitutional things, what the founders set up. each state delegation would get one vote and obviously if it was a majority republican vote they would vote for the republican. so trump would probably win anyway. we're going to have an elector and white house chief of staff --

over to the xs and os and what's going to happen next. right after that, they take a knee and do this little postgame chant and it's been a tradition for years that the students right after that lead out on the lord's prayer. and just so happens the coach was on his knee during that time and didn't feel it was respectful to pull away during that time. shockingly the freedom from religion foundation decided to send a threatening letter to an otherwise great school district there in panhandle of florida. and as a result of that, i think the school district was put in a bind and i feel horribly for that school district because you can line up ten judges and five of them will go one way and another way but this is a gray area that they made it sound like it was a done deal. >> here's the statement, they say coach metcalfe's conduct is is unconstitutional because he endorses and promotes religion

when acting in his official capacity as a school district employee. eddie, we just showed footage of you kneeling with your players and you look at that from afar and think, what a nice moment, after the game coming together in unity and thinking about something beyond yourself. what is your reaction to all of this? >> i come from a very close knit community. i love my staff and love the school system that i work for and superintendent and i have known each other for 25 years, he's a great guy and caught between a rock and hard place. i would just like to be able to show respect to my players as they exercise their freedom of religion. >> eddie, what are players saying about this? what has their reaction been? >> they are supportive. they are very supportive. i have some good kids. >> have you since then continued to kneel down and pray after a game? >> no, ma'am, superintendent has

senator chris murphy tweeting this is madness, a 7:30 saturday escalation of diplomatic crisis with china via twitter. shouldn't they be more concerned about china's actions, 2008 presidential candidate, dennis kucinich. what's your take on this situation overall, china seizes a drone, donald trump reacts, what's your take? >> china is giving the drone back. that's a good thing. freedom of navigation in the south china sea is an issue and something that's going to have to be dealt with diplomatically. i think this being a season of peace on earth and goodwill towards all, perfect time to practice deescalation. >> it only it was a season of peace on earth. we have a lot of things going on around the world, a lot of hot spots and president obama has said the last eight years are more peaceful. in the south china sea, iran,

syria, elsewhere, there's a lot of problems. is it not time to step up and draw lines and say you can't take our drones anymore? >> drawing the line in the water is difficult when it's 5,000 west of honolulu. but we need to practice dehe is ka lags, and i'm glad that china is returning the drone. that's what they should do. and i think our new president should come to an understanding that you don't have to comment on everything that happens in the world. sometimes the power of the presidency comes from not saying anything. >> but a tweet is also not a gun and south china sea is international waters, hotly contested by china that's building islands right under our nose. they said they aren't going to militaryize them and now they are.

trillions of dollars of trade go through the waters. is donald trump saying america is back, we're not going to take it anymore? >> america has always had a pretty strong military presence around the world. america is not weak militarily by anymeans. we need to remember there are solutions other than military solutions and dealing with difficulties with people who have been allies. don't forget china trade, it was a major trade agreement that the u.s. signed. there's a lot of economic relationship between the united states and china. we have corporate america with very deeply involved in china. we should be able to settle our differences without trying to escalate it and to flex our muscles. look, who is going to challenge the united states militarily? no one. >> the question is could an opening be created where that's possible. real quick, we only have 15 seconds, is your assertion that trump's reflex is going to be
