>> she's a hero. >> thanks for watching. please remember the spin stops here because we're looking out for you. stops here because we're looking out for you. breaking tonight, america's top diplomat delivering some harsh words to our most critical ally in the middle east. setting up a diplomatic showdown of historic proportions, less than four weeks until the current administration heads for the exits. welcome to the kelly file. i'm sandra smith in for megin kelley. secretary of state john kerry launched into a blistering speech following the u.n. vote on israeli settlements. launching into his own pointed rebuke, a little over an hour

after mr. kerry wrapped up his speech. using words like hard truths. tensions that were bubbling under the surface are now bubbling over into the public forum. >> we both need to tell each other the hard truths and friendships require mutual respect. they fail to realize that the united states of america, has done more to support israel than any other country. >> in a speech about the israeli and palestinians, secretary kerry paid lip service to the unremitting war against the palestinians for nearly a century. >> floor a similar number of jews and palestinians living between the jordan river and the mediterranean sea. they have a choice. they can choose to live together

in one state or they can separate into two states. but here is a fundamental rea y reali reality, if the choice is one state, israel can either be democratic or jewish, it cannot be both. >> allowings tos live in their historic homeland. >> the israeli prime minister publicly supports a two-state solution. but his current coalition is the most right wing in israeli history with an agenda driven by the most streextreme elements. >> i don't seek applause, i seek prosperity and a future of the jewish state.

israelis do not need to be lectured about peace by foreign leaders. >> ultimately it will be up to the israeli people to decide whether the unusually heated attacks that israeli officials have directed toward this administration best served israel's national interests and it's relationship with an ally that's been steadfast in its support. >> palestinian rejection of israel in support for terror are what the nations of the world should focus on if they truly want to advance peace. and i can only express my regret and say that it's a shame that secretary kerry does not see this simple truth. >> the israeli ambassador to the u.s. joins us in moments. and later famed harvard law professor allan dershowitz says that the israeli administration

set this whole thing up. tonight's speech is perhaps the climax of several days of fierce political battle and fiery political rhetoric over friday's up resolution vote and there's been no love loss between israeli benjamin netanyahu and secretary of state john kerry. along with prime minister netanyahu, other really leaders are also firing back against secretary of state kerry, one israeli official told me that while the middle east burns, secretary of state kerry talks about home construction and another senior israeli official said he questioned whether the obama administration truly understands what's happening on the ground here. palestinian leaders are also sounding off about the future of peace talks, mahmoud abbas says that palestinian is ready to

resume talks if israel ceases all settlement activities. the palestinians also say they want the negotiations to be based on friday's resolution and that alone may be a nonstarter for israeli leaders. that said a palestinian delegation will attend a middle east piece conference aimed at restarting talks between the israelis and palestinians a conference that israeli officials, one senior official told me is a sham just to hurt israel's credibility and that israel will not be attending. >> joining me now to react, the israeli ambassador to the united states, ambassador, thank you for being here tonight. we're hear from you, one of the first reactions from you to the secretary of state's speech today, it was a long speech, he was clearly showing his

frustrations. we have heard benjamin netanyahu respond, john kerry lashing out at the so-called settler agenda. your response? >> well, look, first of all, this is not new. i have been in this capacity as ambassador for over three years, before that i was the senior advisor to the prime minister. we have been working with this administration for eight years and in 2009 we had a crisis over the whole question of settlem t settlements. this administration, president barack obama came into office thinking that the whole reason why we don't have peace with the pla palestinians is because of the question of settlements. i remember we had just finished this war in gaza where we had thousands of rockets soaring over our heads. and they uprooted 21

settlements, in the early days of the administration, the prime minister came to washington and said this is the be all and end all. and said you have to stop settlements. so this is not a new story, this is not the building up of all sorts of years in some new policy. it was deeply disappointing that this administration in its waning days failed to -- this was a 72-minute speech and yet they did not discuss that israel made a sweepi ining peace offer 2000 that was met by palestinian rejection and claimed 1,000 israeli lives. they did not mention that in 2008, another israeli prime minister made a sweeping peace offer that was also rejected by the palestinians. the reason why we don't have peace is that the palestinians have rejected the stake of the jewish people in any boundary.

and until we deal with the root of the conflict, we're never going to have any peace. i hope this is the closing chapter to the wrong approach to peace and that soon we'll open a new chapter that will take the right road to peace. because we in israel want it more than anyone. >> clearly you are already developing and have developed a relationship with the incoming trump administration. what does the israeli-united states relationship look like under the trump administration? >> well, first of all, i don't think this is a battle between israel and the united states. we were very heartened that president-elect was against this move at the u.n. security council, that he wants to work closely with israel to harden this alliance. and we were also heartened by the fact that leading members of both parties, republicans and democrats alike oppose this solution. our most important ally in the world that we're fighting the same enemies and we have the

same goals. and i believe with a new administration, with bipartisan support in congress, i do not think there will be daylight between the u.s. and israel and we look forward to having that conversation, and see what we can do to get about the business of actually advancing peace, which has. happened in the last eight years, because we haven't had a palestinian leadership that wants to make paeace. and the u.s. has blamed the wrong party for there not being peace. >> secretary kerry said it was skewed against israel it said it obsessively dealt with -- palestinian opposition to a jewish state in any boundaries and we also had our brain room big into the speech, hezbollah was mentioned four times, terrorism seven times,

occupations six times, settlements 26 times to the point of your prime minister. >> obviously that was just a continuation of the policy for many years in this obsessive focus on the settlements. i'll tell you the one thing that bothered me more than anything else in the speech. i heard the secretary of state go after this coalition as the most right wing coalition in u.s. history and that's why we don't have peace. there's another coalition and it's a coalition of the palestinian authority with hamas, who's charter calls for the murder of jews worldwide. you would think in a 72-minute speech, the secretary of state might have mentioned that as being one of the reasons why we don't have peace, or the fact that you have a palestinian authority that glorifies violence and terrorism. he touched on that with a couples of sentences in a 72-minute speech. but that raises their children

to hate jews, this is why we don't have peace, the refuse kl to recognize the right of jews to have a homeland a land. >> u.s. senator chuck schumer, a leading democrat in this country has just responded a few minutes ago, putting out while secretary kerry mentioned gaza in his speech, he seems to have forgotten the history the settlements in gas sachlt while he may not have intended it, i fear secretary kerry in his speech and action at the u.n. has emboldened extremists on both sides. ambassador? >> the extremists on the palestinian side are terrorists and they're in the government. when we have any acts of terrorism in israel, all our political leaders, national

leaders, we condemn it. we don't those terrorists into pariahs. but i want to thank senator schumer, i want to thank him for his strong stance in coming out against this and basically calling on president obama to veto this resolution, and he's exactly right in terms of what happened in gaza. we withdrew to the '67 borders, we uprooted all of those citizens. hoping to achieve peace, instead we got thousands of rockets. this is the reality that israelis live day after day. we are responsible for the consequences of the decisions that are made elsewhere. and that shouldn't be the case. the prime minister said it today, and it's important. it's one thing that most infuriates the israeli people. we are a sovereign nation, we

have to make the tough choices that affect our own security and our own lives. we want peace more than anyone else in the world because it's our children who go into battle to defend our country, and we would like to see that day come where we can have peace with all our neighbors, it's not going to happen with a vote in new york, it's not going to have in a con fence of nations. we have a so republican nation, respect the will of the israeli voters to affect our future and our children's future. we're the ones who have the most skin in the game, we're the ones who most want peace. >> you and the prime minister have blamed obama as being behind the push for this resolution, do you still support that idea? >> absolutely. >> and you're putting that out there, and that the prime minister is putting that out there as merely a distraction, as the deputy national security

advisor ben rhodes is now saying, if you have the evidence, which we're told you have ironclad evidence, why not turn it over right now, reveal this your people, reveal this to the american people. >> i'm not the master of fiction, ben rhodes is, we will present that to the new administration through the appropriate channels, it's sensitive information, i think a new administration will take a look at it. when a prime minister of israel goes on international tv and says he's got clear evidence, he's got clear evidence, i have never even heard him make such a game. we will give it to the new administration and they can d decide if they want to show it or choose to share it with the american people. >> ambassador, thank you for coming on tonight. breaking tonight, we received word a short time ago that oscar nominated actress debbie reynolds has died at the age of 84. tragically her death comes just one day after her daughter,

breaking tonight, reports now raising questions over questions a meeting secretary kerry had scheduled weeks ago with the palestinian diplomat. you heard the israeli ambassador to the u.s. calling the proof of kerry's collusion ironclad, a point prime minister netanyahu seconded today. >> we have on absolute incontestable evidence that the u.s. organized, advanced and blocked this resolution to the united nations security council. we'll share that information with the incoming administration. some of it is sensitive, it's all true, you saw some of it in the protocol released in egyptian paper, there's plenty more, it's the tip of the

iceberg. >> with more on how this story continues to develop, we go to trace gallagher in our newsroom. >> the white house says it abstained from the resolution because the undermines the peace process, but the -- claiming secretary of state john kerry discussed the u.n. resolution during a meeting with top palestinian officials, including the palestinian secretary general. a u.s. national spokesman called the report a fabrication, saying the meeting never occurred, though even the state department website say that the two were to meet around the time of the record. now that israeli prime minister netanyahu has upped the antesaying he has ironclad proof, the white house appears to be adjusting it's denial saying it did not draft or introduce the resolution, but today secretary kerry appeared

to indicate the u.s. was involved in negotiations about the resolutions. watch. >> we made clear to others including those on the security council that it was possible that if the resolution were to be balanced and if it were to include references to incitement and to terrorism, that it was possible the united states would then not block it. >> after kerry's speech, palestinian president mahmoud abbas released a statement that reads in part, the minute the israeli government agrees to cease all settlement activities, the palestinian leadership stands ready to resume permanent status negotiations. the prime minister called -- president-elect trump is gaining israeli support. today trump tweeted, quote, stay strong, israel, january 20 is fast approaching. in return, netanyahu wrote,

president-elect trump, thank you for your warm friendship and your clear-cut support for israel. you'll recall throughout the gop primary donald trump was criticized by his opponents as being anti-israel. joining me w law professor allan dershowitz. do you believe that there was collusion here? >> it's obvious, if the united states did not have any role in helping this go through, it would show -- of course they had a role and there will be congressional hearings and ben rhodes will have to raise his hand and swear under oath and when he is cross examined, he's going to acknowledge exactly what role he played, what role vice president biden played, what role the president played. this could not have happened without the complete support of the united states and this sets

back the peace process enormously. secretary kerry who i know well and who means well have now discouraged the palestinians from coming forward and negotiating. because what basically he said to them, it's not your fault, it's the israelis' fault and now the palestinians say they have a clever answer, we'll sit down and negotiate, but only under the security council resolution which means they start the negotiation with the western wall in their possession, the access road to hebrew university and the ha dprdaffa hospital. and as a result peace is going to be set back years because of this begotten resolution and this very bad speech by secretary kerry. >> it seems that netanyahu has already established a relationship with president-elect trump. he is promising a lot. >> president obama deliberately

and undemocratically tied the hands of his successor by having a security council resolution that cannot be undone because of the veto power. it's so undemocratic for a president to tie the hands of the incoming president. it's going to make peace much, much more difficult to achieve. and this speech today, that the idea that secretary kerry would talk about israel not wanting to make peace, not saying that it offered a peace agreement, numerous times, every time the palestinians have rejected it. this speech should win an academy award for best fictional presentation. >> and you have already gone on the record calling it meaningless and a tragic missed opportunity. >> it tells the palestinians,

you don't have to negotiate, you don't have to make painful compromises, we'll give you a state in paris, we'll give you a state at the u.n. the israelis have offered them open ended negotiations for the last several years, they have never taken them up on that. >> with just a few weeks left in the obama administration, you sat down and you said that president obama invited you to meet with him, before inauguration day. >> that's right. >> what was that meeting all about. >> he called me into the oval office for a half an hour and he assured me that he would always have israel's back, he obviously wanted my support, wanted me to express my support to voters, which i did. >> what was his plan? >> his plan was who knows whether he was deceiving me at the time or whether he changed his mind. i don't know what basis he would have for changing his mind. but i can tell you he deceived

me. >> what about the united nations, the ambassador has been calling it a says pool of anti-israel actions, what do you think there? >> first of all the united nations should -- it works, let me tell you what the saudis did a couple of years ago. the united nations said they were going to put them on a blacklist about how they treat child soldiers and the saudis said unless you take us off the blacklist, we'll stop funding the up. to the u.s. has to use it's economic leverage to turn the u.n. into an authentic forum. there are automatic votes against israel on every issue. israel is condemned more than all the other countries in the world combined. syria is murdering people, the russians are taking over the

ukraine and all anybody can talk about is israel making settlements. but the issue is will the palestinians recognize israel as the nation state of the jewish people and stop insent vising people to -- the obama white house has policy experts touting a new found closeness between president-elect trump and prime minister netanyahu. mr. trump tweeting earlier today, quote, we cannot let israel continue to be treated with such total disdpan and disrespect. they used to have a great friend in the u.s., but not anymore. the beginning of the end was the horrible iran deal, now this, u.n. stay strong israel, january 20th is fast approaching. here to debate whether a trump presidency will produce a thaw in the newly chilled relations.

katrina pierson is here. it does appear that things continue, the relationship here, it has worsened. and donald trump is making business promises, come january 20 hth when he gets there, but u just heard allan dershowitz say the damage has already been done. >> america has no better friend in the world than israel. and israel has no better friend than the united states of america. israel and the united states of america share many, many mutual values and israel is the only true democracy in the middle east. but i take very little comfort in the words of president-elect trump when he trying to sound quote israelis when he has outright anti-semitic crowds right there in the white house.

allan dershowitz was on right before the election, he said the reason why he would not want to see trump win the election is because a trump victory would hand victory to the alt-right movement. steve bannon, senior advisor the trump, took his kids out of school because there were too many jews in school. then he apologized. i take very little comfort in that. >> i'm sorry, sandra, really? we're talking about steve bannon now when we have a serious conflict in the middle east. it's pretty obvious by now that president-elect supports israel, our greatest ally in the middle east. and mr. dershowitz said he thought president obama was misleading him when the obama administration issued a one-two punch of betrayal from the iran deal that's funding terrorism right now, to this resolution, it's unconscionable to see this

outgoing administration take these kinds of actions, or inactions in abstaining from vetoing this ridiculous resolution, this is an insult to americans. >> he was challenged, donald trump was challenged on the campaign trail, i take you back to february 2016. marco rubio, ted cruz hit him on this hard. he was asked to pick sides in the conflict between israel and palestinian, he said, quote, let me be sort of a knneutral guy, have friends of mine who are really good negotiators and they say it's not doable. that stuck with him for a while. >> as a businessman, the art of the deal, he does want to -- the outgoing administration has moved the united states from being that facilitator to actually being an arbitrator for the palestinians. the fact that this is occurring less than a month before this

little bit of a corner, a so called political poison pill. another said it's sort of like sherman turning down atlanta on his way out of town. by any description, it should be a very tough start for mr. trump, thanks in part by what's left behind by mr. obama. joining us now, representative shaun duffy who was one of the first members of congress to support donald trump and matt bennett is the founder to third way. do you agree with president obama's decision here to retaliate against russia? >> i absolutely do agree with it. as he points out, you simply cannot stand by while a hostile foreign power tries to meddleal in our election, because the only thing that putin and strong leaders like him understand is force. if they're going to use it

against us, we need to retaliate, he's right to do it. >> do you think we need to respond, congressman? >> we should respond, but lindsey gram and republicans think if it's foul play we should engage with russia, this is not about putting trump in a box. president obama has been weak with russia, this is about barack obama trying to find a scapegoat for his election losses. he's blamed fox news, now he wants to blame russia and so eight years, he's been weak on russia so the last 24 days of his presidency, he's now going to get a backbone and push back with sanctions that he's not even going to be able to enforce because he's leaving office. let trump come in and deal with it as a new government. >> why do this now? why not wait for the incoming administration to deal with this, we still don't know what the actual details are,

something's supposed to come out tomorrow, we don't even know in what capacity or format, but until we see those details, you kind of wonder about the timing of this, there's three weeks of this administration. >> i don't wonder, there's three weeks left of this administration, i think it's taken too long as it is. three weeks ago we had all three intelligence agencies come out and say it was clearly the russians that was trying to impact the outcome of our election, this was clearly an appropriate action for our president to take. he is still president. he only have one president at a time in this country. if you listen to the president-elect, he said there's computers and -- i have no faith that donald trump will do anything and i think it's appropriate for the president to take action while he's still in office. >> we need to look at this, we need to find out and learn from it so that this doesn't become a

habitual problem and it doesn't happen again in the near future. >> that's why republicans myself included have stepped forward and said we have to engage in an investigation and hold russia accountable. but to say this involvement from russia s whether it was with the dnc or podesta's e-mails had any imagine of the american people. foreign policy, that's what drove them to the ballot box to make america great again. this was not anything that came out from the silly and foolish e-mails from the dnc, we didn't really care that the dnc was supporting hillary clinton over bernie sanders. so we're going to drive a story that russia actually influchenc

developing tonight, a political feud between once cordial former colleagues is now playing out in a bitter public showdown. last month, a "washington post" op-ed, titled i'm a muslim, a woman and an immigrant, i voted for trump. since then she says she's been verbally harassed by c. christine fair who's expressed outrage through a series of private twitter exchanges. quote, i have written you off as a human being, your vote helped

normalize nazis in d.c. i know you, you're a fame mongering clown show. the kelley file offered christine fair an opportunity to appear on this program to respond, but she politely said that -- saying in part, quote, i made it clear that i did not want to engage her, i have a right to disagree with a public figure who has defended as bravery what others like myself find undefensible. thanks for being here tonight. >> thank you. >> do you mind telling us a little bit about what happened here, this is somebody you used to know, you used to work with. you spoke out about this piece, showing your support for donald trump, and then she did what? >> well, you know, this feud as you call it, you know, is something that i think is playing out in so many homes and

so many families. so i chose to speak out because what happened is that christine fair wrote to me on facebook, that wonderful medium and said we're done, after i had published my piece. i said okay, that's fine. you know, i have lost a friend, but that's how it goes. but subsequently, she continued to start this barrage of messages, not public messages, but private messages. there are principles that we need to live by, one is service to humanity and the other is humility. we need to appeal to each other with decency, when i tried to do that, she told me to f-off. what we need to do is look into each other's heart and try to understand each other and speak to each other with civility.

>> we told you we invited her on the program tonight to get her side of the story as well. she was originally going to come on rpgs but she says she's now facing threats from trump supporters because of what she has done here and because of what you have said that she has done. she did give us an idea of where she would have gone. she said this has been a mob of violent crazed nutry based on an inaccurate telling of events. sit possible you see this as two different ways and it's being interpreted differently by both of you? >> this is the dynamics of bullying, a bully will always try to turn the facts so that they become the victim. and unfortunately that's what we have going on here. i appealed to georgetown university to intervene because this is not just a private citizen, this is an educator, and this is a place that i care about as an institution. this is a principle that we have to stand up for in all of our

families, in our communities and our workplaces that bullies cannot demean others. >> do you think should be fired? >> i would never go that far with anybody because i ultimately have hope for salvation and i ultimately have forgiveness in my heart and compassion. i know that the anger that many people feel over the election of donald trump comes from a place of pain. and i know that what we have to do as a country is find healing, but there's no excuse for demeaning others and that's what i wanted to stand up for. what i hope is that we can all be -- >> i want to know what your life has been like. this is obviously part of it, the story you're telling us tonight. since you openly showed your support for trump, as a woman, as a muslim. >> sandra, you know, i'm speaking to you, my breath sometimes stops at my task. because this is not a difficult conversation to be had. i have had many people who have

breaking earlier in the show we told you about the loss of a hollywood icon. legendary actress and singer debbie reynolds has died at the age of 84.

reynolds is known for the 1952 classic "singing in the rain" and an oscar nominated best actress performance in 1964 is the unsinkable molly brown. she was rushed to the hospital this afternoon after suffering a medical emergency. and passed hours later. tragically her death comes just one day after the loss of her daughter, carrie fisher. the actress, author, and mental health advocate suffered from heart failure on-board a flight and died yesterday at the age of 60. developing tonight. actress leah remini broke with the church of scientology and has become an outspoken critic. now making waves with the a & e docuseries leah remini, scientology and the aftermath. the focus turns to the fbi, alleged forced abortions and the potential for a lawsuit. but she says she welcomed.

trace gallagher reports from the west coast newsroom, hey trace. >> hey sandra, yeah, the docuseries, scientology and the aftermath leah remini is asking why they haven't done anything to investigate the allegations of abuse by leaders of the church of scientology. to make her point, remini recounts a story of mark and clara. former high rankings of c organization, corg is the most dedicated signtologists. after 30 years in the church. the headlies claimed they escaped in 2005 because of repeated physical and mental abuse. including coerced abortions, watch. >> if a woman got pregnant, he e she would be scheduled to go to get an abortion. if she refused in any manner, she would be segregated, not allowed to speak with her husband, put under security watch, put on heavy manual labor, and interrogated for her crimes. >> the couple claims they relaid their allegations to the fbi, even filed lawsuits against the
