our work, we are telling the terrorists, you are murderers full of hatred. but you will not determine how we live and want to live. we are free, compassionate, and open. abby: and of course this comes just shortly after that attack at the christmas market there in germany. you say that she still has some lessons to learn. what are those? >> well, yes, i mean, this speech, there's a name for this in the mental health profession. it's called cognitive dissidents. it's when an individual holds two completely contradictory things to be true at the same time, abbey. and you can't have your cake and eat it when it comes to these two issues. you cannot say we will have unfettered immigration from war zones and places where jihadis are active and also be safe. we've seen it before. this isn't the first time. we've seen it again and again and again that the attacks in europe connected to immigrants. in some cases, immigrants who had asylum status, refugee

status. even here in the united states, there was a congressional report recently. we have prosecuted about 500 people for terrorism since 9/11 here in the united states. half of them were not born here and many of them were on visas that had expired or were actually asylum seekers here in the united states. so you can't have national security and as much immigration as you want. abby: right and we're seeing this play out all over the place. most recently in istanbul, turkey. but we've already seen it in our own backyard. you think about the nightclub attack in orlando just this past year. how do we here at home live in reality? how do we get this right when it comes to fighting terrorism and handling a refugee crisis? >> well, first thing's already happened. the american people have spoken. so on november 8th, we've elected somebody who gets it. who understands that having borders, having real vetting, not the false kind of, you

know, smoke in mirrors that we have today is absolutely nonnegotiable. donald trump is going to change how we do this. we're going to see numbers decrease. and also, one of the big things we have to do is follow the lead of the nypd. the nypd after 9/11 felt the fed betrayed them and developed intelligence. we have to have the capacity for law enforcement to profile and to go into the places where they're undercover assets, where the bad guys are. political correctness has to stop if we're going to save american lives. abby: yeah, i think that's well said as we go into a new year, we have got to get right. dr. sebastion, good to see you this morning. >> all the best. abby: have a good day. republicans winning so much, it is destroying democracy. that's a controversial claim from a professor in north carolina. that professor is joining us live next.

. >> welcome back. a political science professor at the university of north carolina says the state is no longer a democracy partly because the statewide republican party has been too successful at winning. andrew reynolds writing a column saying in part north carolina's overall electoral integrity places us alongside authoritarian states and pseudodemocrats like cuba, i notice nearby a. but is this really a fair assessment? joining us now the professor behind that column, andrew reynolds. professor, thanks for joining us this morning. really appreciate it.

so your argument is there's been such a consolidation control of elected positions in north carolina that north carolina barrel quantifies as a democracy. is that what you're saying? >> well, let me start by saying this is not a partisan issue. it's not about republicans winning elections or democrats winning elections. this is about the rules of the game. and the electoral integrity project, which i reported upon was saying that if you look at the election moment, that one discrete part of democracy, north carolina had actually atrophied to sort of middle-ranging state. it wasn't fully functioning as a democracy anymore. but what i did was try to add that to some other indicators that we use in political science and basically look to other. so the courts had ruled unconstitutional in north carolina. the courts have blocked the recent moves on the executive legislative power in north carolina. and the courts have said that

there was a targeted precision targeting to african-american voters to exclude them. so what i'm saying is that if you add all of these pieces together, what you've got is an unhealthy democracy. >> okay. >> so this is really a call to try to think about how we can improve. >> so, professor. >> how we return ourselves to a democracy. >> you're saying one thing unhealthy. redistricting and all of that for both republicans and democrats have put themselves on scale for a lot of states for a long time. but you go far in the alter. you want to read one excerpt. you say north carolina is not only the worst state in the u.s. for unfair districting but the worst entity in the world ever analyzed by the electoral integrity project. we're talking about states like iran and saudi arabia where entire classes of people are not allowed to drive or -- second-class citizenship. how do you make that -- can't you see how a lot of us look at that and say that's going way too far. >> no. i think you have to
5:55 am
look at the specifics of what we're talking about. we're taking the vital signs of a patient, and we're looking at one specific element, which are the drawing of district boundaries. now, there are many authoritarian regimes where the boundaries mean nothing. but when you have a democracy, when you draw the lines to allow voters to choose their representatives, then you actually have to have a system that gives a fair shot to every side to win or loz. and our problem in north carolina is that we have lost competition from the system. and that hurts democrats, and it hurts republicans. >> so that's not just north carolina; right? >> no longer -- absolutely. >> california, and new york state and -- so you make a very good point. one point tearing with very much so in the article is nonpartisan redistricting jerry mannedderring squashes one side or the other, have insured jerry mannedderring levels the playing field. so this is not just republicans doing this. this is a system that's rigged
5:56 am
by the side in power. >> absolutely. and that's absolutely true and democrats as i've said in other pieces have been as culpable as republicans in the lines. that's part of the system. it's an inherit problem of the system that we have today. so i think one step is nonpartisan independent district commissions. but there are lots of other steps to be taken. we have a handful of seats in carolina that are competitive. so what happens then is you get bills passed that are not approved by the population, per se. hp2 has a 55% -- >> yeah. but ultimately. the representatives of that bill or other, they're still accountable to the people. there wily be another election cycle. people are running away from that issue. how do we say that's undemocratic? there's been backlash, so they're responding. >> they are accountable to their core party voters.
5:57 am
so a representative like many other states is primarily accountable to his or her party but also to the voters that are perhaps a little bit more on the extreme. if you had redistricting, you would actually have representatives appearing to the modern center. >> professor, we're running out of time. i would love to keep this going. there are intellectual everywhere but doesn't make us the same as venezuela. we'll have to agree to disagree. more fox and friends moments awy what's the best way to get two servings of veggies? v8 or a fancy juice store? ready, go! hi, juice universe? one large rutabaga, with eggplant... done! that's not fair. glad i had a v8. the original way to fuel your day.
