tv   Shepard Smith Reporting  FOX News  January 6, 2017 12:00pm-1:01pm PST

12:00 pm
we can't know that for now. we wait for authorities, we know these authorities in broward county very well. they are often very good about informing us. today apparently they can't. >> it's 3:00 where there's an incident now. two hours ago now, alone gunman injured the baggage claim area at terminal 2 and began firing. according to a witness with whom i spoke, this gunman who was in his 30s, he was described in no other way by that by our witness. began firing at people and most people hit in the head according to witness john schlicher. john and his wife and mother-in-law were there in baggage claim as people began to fall around him. he heard shot after shot after shot. witnesses say the man emptied
12:01 pm
his gun and reloaded shot after shot after shot. according to senator bill nelson, reloaded for a third round. according to john schlicher that witnessed this, the man began walking away. authorities screamed at him to get down on the ground. he did get down. he was taken into custody. he was interviewed by authorities. we learned from authorities five people are dead. another eight people wounded and taken to what used to be called broward health now. and then i'd say 2:20 this afternoon, 40 minutes ago, a second eruption of emotion, this time in the parking garage, which is across the street, if you will, from this baggage area. a second terminal, terminal one was evacuated where they allowed planes to land. now there's a full ground stop. people scattering like ants. hundreds and hundreds of people
12:02 pm
running across the tarmac. some going across the railroad tracks. now ambulances screaming through. this is broward fire rescue coming through in one of the familiar to everyone in south florida, and now officially from the transportation security administration, there's an active shooter situation. is there an active shooter situation? we don't know. they're conducting themselves in that way. they're reporting there's an active shooter. i report to you what they report to us. active shooter. everything is at a standstill. no cars in, no cars out no planes in, no planes out. complete ground stop. anybody headed to this airport via interstate 595 or 95 or the florida turnpike, which is inland from there, anybody headed in that direction is in full stop. the ambulances are lined up.
12:03 pm
full stop. they're conducting themselves as if there's an active shooter right now inside. the first report was the garage there. then they started emptying out terminal one. so whether there is an active shooter or not, they're treating this situation as an active shooter situation. that means nobody in and out. i've gotten news, new information, this is from the broward county mayor, barbara sharief that said a loud noise was heard in the garage and they're clearing out in caution. at the moment, no indication of a second shorter or an ongoing active shooter. yet, the transportation security administration has informed us otherwise. i can tell you -- phil keating is with a witness. what do you have? >> i'm here with william hazelgrove. he's here with his wife and two daughters that are scared to death here. you were in terminal one trying to head back to chicago.
12:04 pm
you were on the inside of tsa. so you had gone through security. this is more than 1 1/2 hours after the initial shooting in terminal two, baggage claim. you heard how many shots? >> probably four or five inside, further down inside the terminal. everybody started running. >> people were in absolute panic. sprinting outside of terminal one. >> yes. >> prior to that, all of the action was at terminal two. >> yeah. down here. so everybody assumed up there they were safe. bam, bam, bam. everybody started running for the doors. >> no idea as to who was pulling the trigger? >> none. >> law enforcement or whether it was suspect number 2? >> no idea. just that it was inside and that everybody started running this way outside. then seemed like it happened one more time again. i didn't hear the shots. everybody took off again. >> a second wave of everybody sprinting. if you were outside, that's when everybody was screaming all the way over to the other side of
12:05 pm
the tarmac. you can see people just running full sprint with their carry-on bags or whatever they had all the way to the north side of the airport. you can see them by the three private jets, the hanger over there. these people just pour across the runways. shep, as you said, the initial shooting with five dead, an additional eight taken to the hospital wounded, that happened at roughly 1:00 p.m. this afternoon at the ft. lauderdale hollywood international airport. then a lull. then planes coming in, taking off. people were seemingly, orderly moving back in. the initial suspect was in custody. and then i saw about 15 armed cops with long rifles in the air, running into the terminal two garage. reports of a second shooting in there. and then everybody that was near
12:06 pm
the garage upper deck, lower deck, running northbound and hiding behind every single car they could. there were armed cops with guns drawn. that's how you ended up to where you are now. >> right. exactly. we ran out, into the street. my wife and kids hid under bushes here. we were there. we got separated. then, you know, texts back and forth, got them back. then my son was missing. we found him down here. >> i can tell you, your daughters are incredibly scared right now. i feel terrible -- >> terrorized would be the word. terrorized. >> unbelievable. >> it is. she looks like she may be hyperventilating she's so scared. she's not the only one. basically that's the state of affairs amongst everybody i've seen. >> a lot of people. >> one of the most serious attitudes and situations. there's not a single smile on anyone's face. nobody really knows what is
12:07 pm
happening. >> and these are all vacationers. everybody is coming back from a cruise or vacation and heading home. >> do you have any hopes that you'll get out of here tonight? >> probably not tonight. >> airport is on lockdown. >> probably not tonight. probably stay in florida a little longer. >> i-595, the main interstate to get to the airport, it's a parking lot. >> and i went back to terminal one to look for them. it was a ghost town. nobody in there at all. nobody. >> maybe 35 minutes ago i ran up to the crest of the hill to look inside terminal one to see what i could find. people had evacuated already, lined up against the railing. calm, sitting down. as they got to the crest, the gates, the doors to get into terminal one, suddenly dozens of people just streaming out of there. not screaming vocally, but screaming in speed, running in panic. >> right, right. i went behind a cab over here. a woman and her baby came and
12:08 pm
hid behind the same cab for a little bit. then i went back to find my wife and kids as well. so we were all trying to find where everybody was. >> william hazelgrove, thanks very much. wish you the best, to you, your wife and kids. >> thank you. >> hope it works out for everybody. >> thanks so much. >> thank you. just a seriously uncertain situation here at the ft. lauderdale airport, shep. >> been working lots of different sources, media sources down there, while you were speaking, phil. i think we have a better handle on this second report. there were two things happening at once. a united later lines pilot got -- remember, this is in terminal two. that's where this happened. terminal two, the big terminal. terminal one after this was over, a united pilot is getting off his plane in terminal one. so the next terminal over, way away, said he smelled gunpowder, which panicked people a little
12:09 pm
bit. that began to empty out terminal one. then there was a report of gun fire. a report of gun fire in the parking garage outside terminal two. when you get a report of gun fire, for instance, you call 911. i say shots fired. then 911 will dispatch to the officers, shots fired. ft. lauderdale hollywood international airport in the parking garage. i'm confident the reports was shots fired. i'm confident the police reported what was said to them. shots fired. i'm confident tsa issued an active shooter situation. there's a report of a shooter. there's just been a shooting here. if there's another report of a shooting, we have to take it seriously. be with history as our guide in the aftermath of major events, there are always, i say "always", 90% of the time, another report of something that turned out not to be true. but they had to act on it as if
12:10 pm
it was because obvious. it feels like that's what's happened now. i take this after gathering news from ten trusted sources around, enough facts coming together there was a report of a second shooter, nobody reported seeing one. they heard noises that sounded like shots fired. there was a mass panic. it was reported to authorities that there were shots fired. so they believe -- they have to report that. what i think what we have is a panic aftermath. i hope i'm wrong. maybe not. i think what we have from all of the facts i can bring together is a report of a second shooting but no second shooting. you can see what panic does in the aftermath of an event like this. it appeared to me people were very calm at 1:30 this afternoon, 1:40. john schlicher on the floor, watching people die around him, was extraordinarily calm. he admitted my wife and i may still be in shock. my wife and mother-in-law.
12:11 pm
he said it was eerily quiet in the aftermath of this shooting. people are so stunned. they realize it's over. then he said there was some sobbing, but remarkably extraordinarily quiet. then the second panic. and that's when emotions ran so high. that's when people have heart attacks. that's when kids get run over. when horrible accidents happen, in the panic, the aftermath of an event. it's very easy to sit 1,000 mails away in an air conditioned television studio and say keep the calm. if authorities could talk to people, that's what they would say. that's what's come over the public address system. you can see authorities are now spooked again. these cops are on the run checking out another report. it is certainly our hope that this is the panic aftermath of an extraordinary event.history lot. we all know where in a slightly different world than we're used to.
12:12 pm
we're warned every time if you're around a shooting, get away because there could be a second. we know it happened in paris. you know? you have your first explosion. we have nothing to indicate what this is. we don't know anything about motivation. nobody mentioned a conspiracy, nobody mentioned an organized group, nobody characterized this in any way. what we have is alone gunman that he reloaded two or three times, shot a lot of people. the latest word is 13 to hospitals. the number is wrong, i think, because we have eight injuries and five dead. five and eight is 13. be that as it may, a lot has gone down today. to compound this with more tragedy here in the aftermath would be remarkably awful. but because of this second panic, there's no movement. people who have been
12:13 pm
traumatized, you heard john schlicher mentioned there's people around him covered in blood. listen to this witness talking. >> she just called me and said they're in a hanger. they won't let them board or anything. >> what is she saying? did she see anyone shoot something. >> no, she didn't see anything. heard the gun shots. >> what did she say about the area she is now? >> they're outside. they're not in the hanger. they're outside and she said it was starting to run. they're outside. that's all i know really. it's pretty frightening down here. i can hear everybody crying, pretty upset. i can imagine -- >> what did you hear? >> i heard crying. people were -- earlier they were running. now it's commotion. yeah. >> did she tell you she saw any police officer? >> lots of police officers down there. the police are directing them.
12:14 pm
there's lots of police officers. they're showing them which way to go. they're all around. >> so you were able to talk to her? >> i have. she's very upset. she's not hurt. it's frightening. it's frightening. >> did she say how many people she's with? >> no. i'm not sure just how many people there are. in our family, there's four. four of us that are down there. and then what is up here now. >> you were traveling to and -- >> yeah, back home to detroit. we came here for a cruise. just leaving. we went to the cruise and just got back today. we were going back home. yeah. >> remarkable pictures coming to us from 7 sky force, the name of the chopper in our location station down there. you saw the access roads around the water, leading off by the train tracks. people walking with their bags.
12:15 pm
that scene reminded me of black-out day in new york. i happened to be at an airport. you couldn't move. there was no way in and out of the terminals like these people are experiencing. there's no cabs, no movement. what do you do? you don't want to be there where you've seen something unthinkable. you want to get away. so they walk. people walking away from the airport. largely industrial area. there's a port. the port where the cruise ships go out from broward. it's near -- these are live pictures outside the airport. the bureau of alcohol and firearms there, the atf on scene in large numbers. miami -- miami international airport security there as well, this is terminal one. this shooting happened in terminal two. there was a panic at terminal one partly maybe because the united airlines pilot said he thought he smelled gunpowder. then this report of shots fired in a parking garage. again, nothing new on that. no suspect, no gunman, no second
12:16 pm
gunman. there's a picture -- do they have the picture in the booth? a picture of a guy being taken into custody. this is that picture coming here from wsvn. the picture that you'll see, this is a man being taken into custody or being handcuffed at terminal one. now, you know, this picture does not tell the story. it's possible there was just confusion and they put a man in handcuffs. we know there's is great activity there. now atf is there, they're on scene. all of these people on the runway. you heard them say it's raining. we haven't seen it. it's 3:00 p.m. in south florida. the chances of rain are good. a slight sprinkle. nobody has anywhere to go. this happened more than two hours ago. so they sit around. we've seen multiple people with babies, nothing to do with them. there's no transportation to take. no one is allowed to or from.
12:17 pm
not even ambulances. they are staging outside the airport. they have to act under a protocol. they're in an active shooter situation. whether or not there's an active shooter doesn't matter. there's protocol to go with an active shooter situation. that means all stops. nobody is moving. flights coming into ft. lauderdale have been rerouted. no flights are taking off for now from ft. lauderdale. the mayor of broward county, the county in which ft. lauderdale was on cnn before we came on air saying we'll have things up and running in just a matter of a few hours. except for the one affected area where the shootings happened. instead, this paralysis. phil keating is there. the calm has been restored, it would appear, phil. at least out on the tarmac, phil. phil keating out front, can you hear me?
12:18 pm
he's coming running now. i see him. phil has been in a dead sprint to get to his camera man. he was doing reporting for us. when he catches his breath. phil, anything? go to the walk-along shot of phil. this is outside terminal one. the walk-along, a man with a camera on his shoulder walking. that's phil keating. listen in. >> i'm still scared. they just went by with a guns and armor. i thought okay, what's going on? we don't have a clear out here. >> what is your name? >> i'm sheryl. >> the only information you've heard is on the p.a. system saying there's an emergency, everybody leave the terminal? >> yes, that's it. we haven't heard anything else. yeah. i think we're all wondering what is going on. we're scared. >> seems every person i run into is quite scared. >> with good run. >> absolutely.
12:19 pm
absolutely. did you hear any shots inside terminal one? >> i did not. well, no, i did. this is terminal one. i thought i heard a shot. that's what scared me. they said, you know, there's a shot. cover. i went behind like the kiosk thing. they said "get out, get out." so i started running. i don't have luggage, my i.d., nothing. i just ran. >> you left it all inside. >> yeah. if you're dead, who cares? >> yeah. i was looking through the windows here at terminal one. you can see suitcases everywhere. just people ran and abandoned their suitcases. just another out here on the curb. nobody know what's the situation is. we saw 12 running with their bulletproof vests on and heavily weaponized arms, running out.
12:20 pm
nobody would take to me. they're in a no nonsense mood. >> right, right. yeah. so none of us know what's going on. we're just all -- you know, should we get -- >> i don't want to interrupt, but i need to talk, phil. >> they told us to run across the street. >> phil keating -- can you hear me? i think we lost communications to phil. i just got a media notice from broward sheriff that they'll have a news conference now on the upper level between terminals 1 and 2 at 3:20 p.m. while you work your way towards that, i've just gotten confirmation on the second report. here's the official word from broward sheriff's office. about an hour ago -- the first shooting -- the only shooting i know about happened at 1:00 p.m. 1 hour and 45 minutes later, at
12:21 pm
the same time, broward sheriff's received two separate reports. one was a report from the parking garage outside terminal two of shots fired. that's not to say there were shots fired but there were shots. at the same time, they got a report from terminal one where phil is of shots fired. it's not confirmed that there were shots but that was the report they got. they got the two reports at the same time. so if you're sitting in dispatch in broward sheriff's office and five people lay dead and eight in the hospital after a gunman went on a shooting rampage and you get multiple reports at the same time that there's an on going shooter situation, you don't sit on this information. they sent that information out and all hell broke loose. people went into full panic mode. you're not to take a knock on anybody now, but terminal one, the sirens going off, it's adding to a level of panic that
12:22 pm
is unhelpful. there's sirens going off and creates a environment that you're not a customed and it ratchets up the volume. it would appear that's where we are now. so you have the two things working at the same time. we don't have any con formation of any more shots fired. we know the action they're in. so we're in this horrible predicament where they can't get people in and out of there. they can't move people. they have to act as if there's an ongoing shooter situation and there's paralysis and panic. law enforcement officers are moving in with long guns, trying to secure areas. you can see there's minor movement of traffic now. that's brand new. so maybe they're starting to move things along a little bit. we're waiting for a new briefs from broward sheriff's office in just a second. but this second -- we now have
12:23 pm
word, for instance, this is rippling across the nation now. the port authority of new york and new jersey has just reported they're stepping up security. port authority of new york and new jersey runs all the airports. the seaports, the bridges and the tunnels. the world trade center site. the port authority of new york and new jersey. one of the largest budgeted organizations of its kind anywhere in the country is beefing up security. this is happening across the nation. we know that the gunman that said to be 26 years old according to the report of rick leventhal, esteban santiago, carrying a military i.d. the branches of the military are investigating whether he was in each branch. the navy has reported no, he's not. the coast guard is reporting no, he's not. no, the coast guard is still checking. the national guard is checking. if he was in -- if he was actually in the military, we haven't confirmed that. just that he has a military i.d.
12:24 pm
striking about his posture today was the calmness with which he executed this attack. according to -- john schlicher, one of the more remarkable men i've spoken with, was on the ground, on the floor in baggage claim where he just watched people die. he described seeing someone next to him with no vital signs. his wife holding someone that was shot in the held. applying pressure. remaining this remarkable composure that we all hope if we ever find ourselves in a place where there's chaos about us, that we can find within us some sort of leadership ability that allows us to lead by example and remain calm and try to help your follow man. that's what he was doing in the middle of -- it sounds like chaos to us. at the time he said it was eerily quiet. said this man just fired and fired and fired. opened his weapon up. when he ran out of bullets, he just reloaded and began firing
12:25 pm
again. john schlicher looked like he was firing at everyone in the head. eventually he walked away. they got him to sit down and brought him into custody. then they were fully sure, sent out news media alerts, told people we got this. man in custody. treating the wounded. gathering the evidence. situation contained. mayor of broward county florida said we'll have the airport going back in a matter of hours. all the people were being escorted out. planes were coming in. they were letting planes land and all of a sudden, two simultaneous reports of another shooting. neither of which has been confirmed. that's the panic that remains. throughout it all, there john schlicher sat with his family on the phone with us as a sheriff said above him and said do not move. listen to this. >> so you were at the baggage claim? >> yeah. as i got my first bag off, i
12:26 pm
heard the first shot. as i did, the person right next to me fell to the ground. i wasn't sure. it was very surreal. i turned and looked. he was holding a handgun. he was firing into the crowd. everyone was standing there waiting for the luggage. he started shooting. >> you said he reloaded and began shooting a second time? >> yes, he did. >> did you get a good look at him? how would you describe him? short, tall? anything? >> he was probably close to 5'10", 6 feet. slender man. dark hair. probably what i saw most was the gun. >> young, old? >> pardon? >> young, old? i'm going to interrupt this replay. we just got word that the shooter was a passenger on a canadian air flight and checked his gun. he claimed his bag, took the gun
12:27 pm
from the baggage, went into the bathroom and loaded it. came out and started shooting. 13 total shots. let's listen in. >> the lower level by baggage. the active shooter shot at least 13 people. eight people as i know right now are in area hospitals being treated. i don't know the degree of their injuries. five people have succumbed to their wounds and tragically dead. we're not releasing any information on any of the victims until we identify them, which will take some time and we are able to respectfully able to notify the next of kin first. the investigation continues. we have the broward swat team clearing the entire airport. there will be no movement in or about the airport until our swat teams give me real-time information that it's safe. right now we're taking -- this scene is considered fluid and
12:28 pm
active. we won't be -- we have one of the more critical pieces of information is, we have this shooter in custody. he's unharmed. no law enforcement fired any shots. the subject is being interviewed by a team of fbi agents and broward sheriff's office homicide detectives. there's been incredible cohesiveness and cooperation between the broward sheriff's office, fdle, fbi and all the local law enforcement entities. we'll answer your questions at the end. at this point i'm going to put the director of the airport on to tell you what's going on. and then you'll be hearing from the sac with the bureau and i'll answer the question. >> i'm mark gale. the airport director here at the ft. lauderdale international airport. when the incident occurred, we
12:29 pm
responded. many of you know that we've suspended operations at the airport for the time being. we're working with law enforcement to address all the needs and concerns of the passengers inside the building and on airplanes right now. they're sheltered in place. we're not sure when the airport will reopen for operations. we'll work with all the law enforcement here, the airlines and the other agencies before we actually move and reopen up the airport. in the meantime, as the sheriff has indicated, we're going step by step, methodically through the building before we take steps to reopen. we'll keep everybody informed through social media and the airport website when that will occur and setting up a hotline for families or friends that may be looking for folks that they haven't reached. we'll publish that in the relatively near future on the website and through social media. that's all i have for now.
12:30 pm
good afternoon. i'm the special agent in charge of the fbi's miami field he she mentioned, the fbi is working closely with the broward sheriff's office to superintendent support their ongoing efforts. we're doing the witness interviews and the suspect interview. the investigation is very early. we have a lot of preliminary information that we're going through. at this point, our role is to actively support the broward sheriff's office until we make a determination on the nature and motive of this incident. thank you. >> we heard about a shooting in terminal one. can you tell us about that? >> at this point there's been no shooting in anyplace else other than at the downstairs of terminal two. no confirmation of any shooting. at this point as i speak, the only gun shots fired at any time during this incident have been downstairs in terminal two. >> what happened in terminal one? said they heard shots --
12:31 pm
>> seems like somebody got injured evacuating. nothing to do with a gunshot or anything like that. >> [inaudible question]. >> we have no confirmation of that. we have law enforcement throughout the airport. no law enforcement at this time has confirmed there's been any gun shots other than the shots in terminal two. >> we saw someone being arrested. is there another person possibly ininvolved? >> not in the shooting aspect. we're reviewing tapes. if it was was arrested it could be for a plethora of things. to my knowledge, nobody was taken in custody. people may have been secured until we found out if they were related or not to this scenario. i don't know if they were physically arrested or not. there's no -- happened around the baggage area. >> any information as to why? >> one suspect only in custody.
12:32 pm
we're not releasing any information -- >> are you able to say what kind of weapon was used? >> no. >> an automatic, semiautomatic? >> we're not going to comment. >> was there a struggle? >> when we apprehended the subject, he was apprehended without incident. >> does it appear the shoot was was waiting for somebody to arrive and ambushed them? >> we're in the beginning stages of the investigation. at this point, the lead on the investigation is with the broward sheriff's office. if we do uncover at some time this was related to any type of terrorist or terrorist activities, the fbi will have complete incident command of this. we'll be assisting the fbi as we move forward with the investigation. also, i want to say, this is not the time for anybody to call 911 on this incident. we're all over here. if you have a real emergency, please keep the 911 lines open.
12:33 pm
if you need information, you can follow us on twitter@sheriff. >> did he act alone? >> twitter@broward sheriff. >> did you find a vehicle for the shooter? >> not at this point. >> does it appear to be a terrorism indication at all or too early? >> too early either way. that's what's going on right now. >> [inaudible question]. >> i do know what flight but we're not releasing any information until we can positively identify the victims and in a respectful dignified manner notify the next of kin. >> sheriff, were the victims men, women or children? >> no, we're not going to release -- >> did the guy act alone? >> at this point it looks like he acted alone.
12:34 pm
>> [inaudible question]. >> at this point there's no second active shooter. no victims suffering from any gunshot wounds. we heard that information as well. it's not confirmed. right now we're dealing with this incident right here. >> what was going on in the parking lot that agents had gun drawns -- >> i'm sure they were clearing parking lots. we had a variety of swat teams out, assets out clearing the entire airport to make sure it's safe. doing their job. >> we have gotten new information that is significant as this news conference is going along. this comes from chip lamarka. he says the shooter was a passenger on a canadian flight with a checked gun. so if you have a weapon, you can check it on a flight. then you get to pick it up after the flight is over. can't be loaded. he claims his bag, got his bag from baggage, took the gun from the baggage and went to the
12:35 pm
bathroom to load it. came out shooting. five dead. eight injuries. so here's what happened that i just got off of the associated press. the man was on a canadian airline flight. more specific on this associated press write through, a canadian airlines flight. he had a weapon, which -- remember, he had a military i.d. so he's identified himself as military. even if you're a member of the military, you can't carry a gun on a plane obviously but they will allow you when pre approved to take your weapon and check it as you would any other kind of baggage. when it's time to pick up your baggage, you can get it from them. that's apparently according to multiple reports what this man did. he checked his weapon, military i.d., checked his weapon. got on a flight. landed at fll.
12:36 pm
got off the flight at fll, went to claim his bag, which contained his weapon. he took his weapon, according to multiple reports, with him into the bathroom, loaded it in the bathroom and that's when he came out and started shooting. again, again, again. remember, our witness, mr. schlicher. mr. schlicher was telling us about this just a moment ago. listen. >> appear to be with anyone? did he say anything? >> he did not say a word. he was not with anyone that i saw. he was actually standing in the middle of kind of a hallway that is -- runs along all of the baggage claim areas. he must have been in front of like between baggage claim one and two firing into everybody that was at baggage claim three, which was the one that we were at. >> a man in a star wars t-shirt pulls out a weapon and starts firing. unloads the weapon and reloads
12:37 pm
it and fires again. >> yeah. >> did you -- what happened after that? we understand he's now in custody. i don't know if you saw that part. >> no. i stayed down. my wife and my mother-in-law are traveling with me. we were on vacation, the first day of our vacation. we stayed down until we saw a policeman come finally. we didn't have to stay down but we should stay in that area. my wife took -- the gentleman next to us was shot in the head. all the people were shot in the head. he said he was on coumadin. she held the pressure on. when the ambulance -- when the ambulances finally arrived, they took him out, he's still living. we checked the man next to him. he had no vital signs. he was gone.
12:38 pm
there were reports of shots fired in the garage and they're locking us down again. they said they think somebody is in the garage. they just said that seconds again. they told everybody to get on the floor. michelle, get down. they told everyone to get down. oh, god. everybody is laying down on the floor between the carousels. >> we see authorities running in that direction. a lot of activities outside. what are you see, john? >> nothing. we're on the ground. >> stay down. >> they said there's something going on outside in the garage. >> it's been our experience in the aftermath of such things, there's often scares. we can hope for now that this is an inaccurate report with tensions high, that's our hope anyway. john, how are you and your wife?
12:39 pm
>> we're not good. this doesn't help. we thought the scene was secure. people are crying out. people are scared to death. >> well, calm is the savior of the day. calm and keeping your head. you are remarkable composure, john. that sort of thing is invaluable at a moment like this. authorities are all over that airport. if there's a problem, they'll fix it. >> oh, they're telling everybody to get way down. more shots that have been fired in the parking garage. >> is a handful of you there, dozens? >> there's over 100 people at least. they kept us. they wouldn't let us -- we couldn't leave. we didn't have our baggage. they have us roped off. they're searching people laying down. people are covered with blood. i'm looking around. there's people that were helping
12:40 pm
people. they just need to get us out of here. this is awful. >> john schlicher, a remarkable man with a remarkable account of the unthinkable things he had witnessed. john schlicher and his wife and mother-in-law just got off a flight from atlanta. they were collecting their bags at ft. lauderdale about to go on a vacation. all of this happened. you heard john say the shots fired, shots fired. we said at the time this happened and the aftermath of things like this. as it turns out, there were no shots fired. the authorities began acting as an active shooter was underway. they had no choice. they had reports from a parking garage. shots fired in the parking garage and shots fired in terminal one. there were no shots fired. the initial shots were plenty for this day. there was no accomplice, no other gunmen. according to authorities.
12:41 pm
emilio esteban, 26 years old according -- i believe that's the right name. emilio esteban. according to rick leventhal, 26 years old. rick has that report for us. a passenger according to multiple reporting now including county commissioner there that he had gotten off a canadian air flight, checked his weapon. he had a military i.d. the military services are checking. esteban santiago is his name. as it turns out, he had checked his weapon according to the county commissioner, checked it on this canadian air flight. checked the weapon in, pulled it out after the flight and loaded it and started killing people. 50 minutes after the shooting, the whole thing had a remarkable chill about it. planes were beginning to land. they were letting people out --
12:42 pm
they didn't want planes to be diverted elsewhere that didn't have to. they were allowing them to come in, putting them in other terminals. all of a sudden these two scarce. you know how roller boards are. if you lean against a roller board suitcase on, the loud noise, if you just had been john schlicher and witnesses someone die next to you and your wife held pressure on a wound in that way, that would spook you. it sounds like that's the kind of thing that happened. authorities are clear. there were no second shootings. this was the panic of people leaving terminal one. they were regaining order. trying to reopen the airport. instead this mass rush of people. hundreds and hundreds of people rushing out on the tarmac. a lot of them followed train tracks. others a waterway out of there. waking out of the airport. now these are live pictures.
12:43 pm
excuse me. it's that time of year. this was two hours and 45 minutes ago this happened. it's not a cold day in ft. lauderdale. there they sit out there on the tarmac still. officially -- officially it's an active shooter situation. the authorities tell us there's no reason to believe that anything else has happened here. the big questions remain, why did this man do this, what was his motivation, was he a part of any other group. he apparently did not communicate in any way, at least our witness john schlicher that was lying there during all of it, said the man never said a word. that he was remarkably quiet. just kept firing over and over and shooting people in the head. he said everybody was shot appeared to be shot in the head. from the descriptions that we heard so far, wouldn't you say that sounds like a trained
12:44 pm
marksman of some sort? might he be a member of the military? might. might he be pretending -- we don't have a way of knowing those things. phil keating is outside now. these stories are astounding. >> yeah. what a chaotic and crazy day and one full of panic and absolute terror for thousands upon thousands of travelers here at the airport who on at least three or four occasions that we saw, including -- not including initial shooting at 1:00 where 13 people were shot and five of them ended up dying, people just running full speed out of terminal two and running out of terminal two parking garage and running over here hiding, on the ground, behind cars. armed law enforcement directing them to come hide behind these cars. and then you see people leaving from within terminal one and within terminal two. so they had already gone inside
12:45 pm
the airports and screened through tsa, awaiting for their flights to depart and board the plane. they're all evacuating the terminals from the jet ways, out here on the tarmac. adjacent to one of the main runways here at the ft. lauderdale international airport. and then the second wave of what the sheriff says is an unconfirmed shooting. he said there was no second shooting inside terminal one. but people certainly thought they heard something that sounded like an additional shooting. terminal one runs out full steam ahead. then the people run all the way across the airport and way across over in the hanger adjacent to the embrare hanger. those people were there earlier, at the embrare hanger. the temperature was about a high of 80 degrees here in ft. lauderdale in miami.
12:46 pm
it's cooled down into the upper 70s now. so it's not as unbearable to be out on the tarmac as it would be in say june, july or august. still, a very uncomfortable situation. everybody who evacuated terminal one and terminal two, especially in terminal one, they ran out full speed. i watched two waves of this happen. there are untold numbers of suitcases just strewn all over the inside of terminal one in the area where you would a prone the airline counters and check in and check your bags. so everybody is basically a lot more calm right now. you can see that on their faces and in their demeanor and attitude than they had been say about 30 to 45 minutes ago. after that news conference with the sheriff, the airport spokesman, the fbi chief and the
12:47 pm
atf, said there was one shooting around 1:00. one shooter. when i asked them specifically, the sheriff of broward county, was the shooter, this lone gunman who is in custody and is alive, was he a passenger on the air canada flight coming in, checked his weapon from wherever he came, gets the baggage claim, takes the gun out, goes to the bathroom, loads the gun and comes out shooting. is that the motive and the explanation you guys are understanding? the sheriff would simply say that is part of this ongoing investigation. we can't comment on that. the sheriff was not identifying the suspect saying it was too early in the game. what the sheriff did say is they were -- they are not going to open this airport until it is entirely cleared. that means every car in the parking garages is thoroughly checked out, visually and if necessary, additionally and make
12:48 pm
sure everywhere, every square inch and every nook and cranny of this airport and terminal one and terminal two, terminal three as well and terminal four. make sure there is no security threat any longer. that is when the airport will reopen. passengers are frustrated. some are family members that came to the airport to await incoming loved ones. they're still within terminal two on lock down. they have no idea when they will see them. they're able to talk on the phone. they know they're safe. that's a good thing. but between 1:00 and i'd say around 3:00 today, shep, there was a very terrorized look of panic on about every face i saw here. it does have a sense of everybody taking a big sigh and a deep breath right now and a
12:49 pm
feeling of a little more safety and security. >> yeah, understandably so, phil. thanks for the great work. i wanted to let you know more about the suspect. we told you his name is esteban santiago. he had a military i.d. checked his gun according to multiple records and loaded in the bathroom. this one they're reporting of the daily beast. they're reporting first hand that santiago lived in anchorage alaska from 2014-16 and that there's alaska court records show court records for operating a vehicle without insurance, stuff like that. evicted for nonpayment of rent. mundane things. in january of last year, a year ago now, santiago was charged with two misdemeanor crimes. one count of fourth degree assault, another of damage to property over $50. according to a spokesman of the anchorage police department, a
12:50 pm
domestic violence charge. so an alternative adjudication where charges were dismissed in exchange for esteban's completion of requirements that are unknown. i can't confirm that. that's from the daily beast. this reporter is good and they seem confident about their information. we're at a loss more motive. he gets off the canadian airliner. he had checked the bag, had a military i.d. there's nothing to suggest why he began firing. our witness told us specifically that he was firing at people in the head. imagine you're at the baggage claim and you reach over and somebody doesn't have vitals. your wife is holding a hemorrhage on another person. people are bleeding all around you. you're caught in a second panic with blood all over everyone. it's unthinkable. so authorities have shut down
12:51 pm
the active shooter situation to some degree. i think they have come to the realization that there was a lot -- there was some overreaction that happened at about 2:15 or so. 2:45 when they get the multiple reports. one from the parking garage and one from terminal one. at the same time, reports of shots fired. but it's not the report. it's how you react to it that will get you. so many of these instances, it's the panic that follows the initial incident which hurts other people. we know that one person, at least one was injured in an attempt to evacuate terminal one upon calls of more shots fired, which they were not. there was this initial shooting with 13 people shot, 5 dead. the other 8 to broward medical center, now called broward health. now we're expecting more
12:52 pm
victims. i don't know why. there's no reason to expect more victims unless they were hurt in the aftermath of this thing. a live look at the runways. jets are lined up. two groups of four of them. a southwest jet leading this pack. to the right there, there are four more jets. they appear to be lined up to get out of there. there's another terminal. i think -- no, four terminals at ft. lauderdale. terminals one and three are the larger terminals. two and four are about the same. at any rate, they've got ten planes out of there or awaiting to get the planes out. this is brand new video.
12:53 pm
let's listen to this. z . >> the latest video we have. it's our belief that that is the second time that they had the panic in that left these already frightened people -- our signal is breaking up. i want to get to matt who is on the line with us. you were at the airport when this happened, right, matt? apparently we lost him on the live line. the matt is listening, call back
12:54 pm
in. the current situation, we wonder what is happening with investigators. initial report was suspect taken into custody. no shots fired. not injured in any way. authorities indicated that as well. now there's reports that the suspect might have been injured. we don't have that. if you're following it online, i know you're seeing it. figured i'd mention it. the suggestion that he's hurt, we don't have that. authorities told us to the contrary. there's other matters that are breaking in this hour as well. for one, u.s. intelligence has come out with their briefing on russia. neil cavuto will have that in the next hour if you're watching on fox broadcast stations. new developments on that. at 4:00 eastern, 1:00 pacific, neil cavuto will have updates on that. interesting developments. we've been watching the dow as well, which has been flirting with 20,000 all day. got within a half a point and minutes ago it was within five
12:55 pm
points. doesn't appear it will get there. we'll watch it. waiting for authorities in ft. lauderdale to tell us what they're learning from this suspect. who is this man, why did he -- these are new pictures as well. why did he get off a plane and start firing at people in baggage claim? didn't say anything. didn't have communications with anybody. standing there by himself. got out and started firing. took one weapon, reloaded it repeatedly. firing again and again and again. he tried to hut people in the head and did. five people did. eight to the hospital. largely these were incoming people. you have to suspect some people might have been there in baggage claim. if you're driving a car and at baggage claim and trying to help somebody, that's not possible anymore. it's not like you can stand there and wait. the majority of the people in baggage claim had just been somewhere and trying to get somewhere. it's not like there's locals there. people coming in on this flight.
12:56 pm
you heard people say we are about to get on a cruise. getting our bags. going to transfer. that's how it works. you fly in, transfer to the port either down in miami or there's another one there in ft. lauderdale where you can go out on cruises. so many of them were in the transfer process. cruises usually live after 5:00 p.m. so you're boarding during the day. this flight landed, they were picking up their baggage around 1:00. that would have given them time to transfer to the cruise. one lady said we're down here for a cruise and all of a sudden, five people murdered in front of you. that image of the woman running out -- this woman with the baby. imagine the helplessness of you know what just happened. now there's a second panic, this is when they left out of terminal one. another video of a woman running out on the tarmac.
12:57 pm
another one with a stroller. going to florida for vacation. of course you have the kids with you. suddenly you don't know how to protect them. reports of another gunman. people are running in all directions, this is broward health, the trauma center. there's a trauma unit at this hospital. a very fine hospital. i've heard it said more than once about this hospital and the one in miami, if you can make it there, they'll keep you alive. if you're a trauma victim, if you've been a shooting victim, a victim of a violent crime, had a horrible fall, if you get there, they'll keep you alive. five people did not get there. he shot them in the head as witnesses watched around, women and children. just waiting to carry their bags. and then these enormous scenes of people on a muggy south florida day. herded like cattle around. this was in the earlier period where about 1:30, 1:45. they started letting people back in the terminals.
12:58 pm
they were positive they had it under control and they did. what they weren't ready for is the panic. the panic that somebody dropped something or a car backfired or most anything happened. they had a noise that sounded like a gunshot. shots fired at the parking garage. didn't happen. another report, shots fired terminal one. panic ensues. people running in all directions. didn't happen. one person was injured in the panic. if there's one thing that we learned from john schlicher who was there with him and his mother-in-law, calm saved the day. calm demeanor in the after math of a crisis. as difficult it is for some, it's a savior. calm, re-assuring, low voices. no moment. he spoke of the aftermath of the shooting as people sat and stood in stunned silence. they had seen people die around them. suddenly the shooter is finally in custody.
12:59 pm
he spoke of soft sobbing. people quietly sobbing in there. it held at that moment as we were on the phone with him until they panicked and said shots fired in the garage. he said it to me on the phone. my heart sank. hopefully this is just a report. but the panic that you could hear, even calm john schlicher's voice, it was notable. you could hear the panic the background. you could hear him say there was an office area above him with a gun. there was a panic. they acted in abundance of caution. what else can you do? avoid the panic and the aftermath is a lesson well-learned. john schlicher is a good teacher. we'll continue on fox news. many of you are watching us on the fox news network. updates on your local evening and late news the right now "your world" with neil cavuto two big stories. new russian intelligence coming

in regarding the hacking of democratic national committee computer systems, especially john podesta's and a run on 20,000 for the markets. i'm shepard smith in new york. local stations, local programming. fox news, neil cavuto. >> everybody outside. let's go! let's go. let's go. let's go. come on. >> this all going down about three hours ago when much of the world was fixated on a dow that was within inches of 20,000. the certification of donald trump to be the next president of the united states in washington and an fbi intelligence report before that man that will claim the presidency all taking a back seat to these developments in ft. lauderdale, florida. five dead, eight wounded in a shooting. officials say that the suspect was a passenger
