unusual and, quite frankly, i thought it was embarrassing for the trump administration when a press secretary, and i covered the white house for six years, announces a special briefing out of schedule, it's a big deal, there's some policy announcement some personnel announcement and here was sean spicer in his very first briefing for the press, one, refusing to take questions, as you pointed out, but then basically attacking reporters for reporting the truth, which was that this was not as big a crowd as some of the other inaugurals, specifically barack obama's in 2009. all you have to do is look at the pictures, and it's clear. there are a couple of points to it. one, it's disturbing because he was making a flat statement that was not true. secondly, it was utterly trivial trivial. who cares about the size of the crowd at the inaugural? >> right. >> it's completely indifferent to the issues facing the country and yet he had the special press briefing to excoriate the press in a trivial matter. >> chris, do you think they're

also, the trump administration is also looking at the optics and the style, the tone they want to set to the rest of america that we're not going to take this lying down, so they found the pictures piece and as well the martin luther king statue that, you know, they thought was out but was actually in, but they want -- is a shot across the bow and could be effective in that sense? >> it could be effective if it was about something important. these are trivial matters. first of all, on the martin luther king bust, the reporter made a mistake, apologized, and sean spicer accepted his apology so i don't know what the continuing fight about that was, and let me ask you, i mean, i assume you guys have seen the pictures. were there more people at obama obama's inauguration or at trump trump's inauguration, number one one? and two, who cares? >> right. you said last night, who cares on your day one spending your time, your first press briefing talking about this. he could have been come out and said in the president's first 24 hours. he actually had an executive order rolling back parts of the obamacare, and he could have addressed that issue or talked about his plans for the week of

participated, i myself was at the new york city march which was peaceful and quite beautiful actually, looking at the signs, talking about protecting women's rights to affordable quality health care, talking about how we are a nation of immigrants. that was the message of this march. if madonna said that, that's unfortunate, but if you listen to kamala harris, one of the rising stars in the democrat party, millions of people showing up across the country not just in coastal cities but in idaho where the elites are not hanging out there sipping their lattes, and it was about civil rights and equality, and i think it was wonderful, and we will gain voters from this, and it shows that democrats are ready to mobilize. i'm excited. >> brad, that's what they're hoping for, and i'm all for these peaceful protests, by the way. i think it's what makes this country so great so i'm all for these women coming out in these big numbers, but there were also some folks, some democrats in congress that came out, brad, hoping that it will help them in the next election. the question is will it, or could this end up backfiring? if you think about it, there

were many women excluded from this, from organizers, including a lot of pro-life women. >> sure. this is nothing but a anger management rally. they lost the election. and, by the way, a lot of the congresspeople who took part in this march did so to disparage the new president. he hasn't done anything yet. and they rejected him at the inauguration. they said that he wasn't qualified. they said that he wasn't our president. and then they show up at this march. look, the problem with democrats is not from without, it's from within. they can't even find a chair to lead their party. it's not because they weren't progressive enough; it's because they were too progressive. look, donald trump has it right: government should only do for the people what we can't do for ourselves. get out of our way. we can figure out health care for ourselves in a marketplace environment. we want a strong america. no more apology and appeasement. and this is the problem they don't understand. they were rejected soundly at the polls from the local, state,

that. this platform was a civil rights civil justice platform and we need to be inclusive and that means including women who are pro-choice. it was fundamental to the platform to stand up there with steele richards, with the heads of naral and is a we don't accept a woman's right to control her own decisions about her body is not what this march was about. those pro-life were out there. i met tons of them yesterday. but being a sponsor is very different than just participating. and to brad's point, the president already has done something. he went and signed executive orders to ease the burden of obamacare. he is going after quality, affordable health care. obamacare needs help but we know that over 30 million americans are relying on it. >> brad, last word here. does this do anything to change the vote? last i saw the election was on november 8. >> no, it doesn't, and what they should be doing is being constructive, not destructive in their attempts to change policy. look, as far as life is concerned, we accept roe vs. wade as the current law.

but instead listen to what sean spicer said. >> at a time when our nation and the world was watching the peaceful transition of power. a reporter falsely tweeted out that the bust of martin luther king jr. had been removed from the oval office. secondly, photographs of the inaugural proceedings were intentionally framed in a way in one particular tweet to minimize the enormous support that had gathered on the national mall. this was the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration period be, both in person and around the globe. this kind of dishonesty in the media is making it more difficult. there's been a lot of talk in the media about the responsibility to hold donald trump accountable, and i'm here to tell you that it goes two ways. weaver going to -- we're going 0 hold the press accountable as well. thank you for being here tonight, i will see you on monday. pete: ed, so you can quibble about the numbers, about the issues, but is this not the trump white house saying you

have lost the stranglehold on the narrative? no longer will you be the filter that we allow to tell stories about any numbers of things we're trying to do, trump's going to play by different rules? >> reporter: yes and no. you're right, pete, that was an example of the trump white house saying there's a new sheriff in town, and that's going to rev up the trump supporters. but he is now the president of the united states, he shouldn't be folked on the 45%, 46, 47%, he's now gloverring. and the disturb governing. and the bottom line when you say, pete, they're taking control of the narrative, great. you have control of the narrative, what are you doing with that narrative? pete: he's got the house and the senate, ed. you've got to keep them strong. they've collapsed time and time again -- >> reporter: pete be, talk about jobs, talk about obamacare. i heard clayton saying that last hour. yes, you're right, pete, they have control of the narrative,

but what are you doing with that narrative? you're getting into a fight over how many people were on the national mall. who cares? he should be focused on bigger things in terms of his slogan, not mine, in terms of make america great again. abby: no, i think that's a great point. the american people don't care about the size of how many people came out. that's not what they're focused on. ed, you've covered a number of administrations, is this only going to get worse, this war of words from president trump and the media? >> reporter: well, that's the other part of it. you're right, the five-man administration that's gone to, quote-unquote, war with the administration and won, yes, i agree donald trump is different in that he basically went to war with the press in the campaign and won. but he was winning, if you want to pick his phrase, during the campaign when he was blocking out the media. you had most of the media, if knot almost all of the media, saying he can't win, he can't

get to 270, and he shocked them all. he beat the pundits. so my point is when the media is spinning itself up and yelling and saying he's wrong and this and that and donald trump is laser focused on jobs and other things that connect directly with the american people, he is quinning. and so when you get into these side issues about satellite photos and the like -- clayton: there was one big thing about the campaign in the intelligence community and one thing that's been undercovered is the reception he received at the cia yesterday after the feud that existed. listen to the reception he got. >> very few people could do the job you people do, and i want to just let you know i am so behind you. and i know maybe sometimes you haven't gotten the backing that you've wanted, and you're going to get so much backing. almost everybody in this room voted for me, but i will not ask you to raise your hands if you -- [laughter]

but i would guarantee a big portion, because we're all on the same wavelength. i have a running war with the media. you are among the most dishonest human beings on earth. [laughter] [cheers and applause] but, and they sort of made it sound like i had a few feud with the -- a feud with the intelligence community. and i just want to let you know the reason you're number one stop is exactly the opposite, exactly. and they understand that too. pete: why does a reception like this go so unreported? >> reporter: because of sean spier, and, this is where, pete, i agree with you again. yes, it was a good moment for donald trump to go to the cia as his first stop. i'm going to the intelligence community. they keep us safe, don't listen to the mainstream media, i respect them, i love the job you're doing, and i'm going to work with you. that's a great them. but then he goes into the crowd size, and spicer goes into all

these other side issues. so, pete be, yes, he's seizing the narrative, but he's going down these other blind alleys. abby: ed, it seems like sean spicer was basically handed a statement, a speech from president trump himself and was just mainly told go read this and don't take any questions. have you seen anything quite like that? >> reporter: right. and i think when dana perino, i was watching it live -- our colleague who i went to battle with many times and she always teases me when i was covering the bush white house, she said she was absolutely stunned, she couldn't believe it. and i think on day one it's going to be a credibility test moving forward for sean spicer when you come out swinging like that. how is he going to differentiate his anger, his, you know, pushback on the media when the media does something that really is much more egregious and a bigger thing? getting a story wrong about north korea or, you know, isis or something that really, really matters? clayton: well, we've got a big

week ahead of us with cabinet picks. he's got two people confirmed so far, chris wallace talking about some of the intractability right now of democrats. how do you see confirmation hearings unfolding this week? >> reporter: i think it's going to start speeding up more, because i think that narrative is going to be bad for the democrats eventually. i remember covering day one of the obama administration, and you're right, he had seven of his people pushed through. and you had, you know, republicans like mitch mcconnell fighting his agenda tooth and nail but saying the president, a democratic president, should have his team in place. this is remarkable, out of the ordinary and, again, back to the back and forth i had with pete be, sean spicer mentioned this, pete be, for about ten minutes, but it got stepped on by all the other stuff. pete be: you've got a mainstream media complicit with the media as they've always been, you've got protesters saying they want to blow up the white house,

democrats on capitol hill pushing back against every nominee. at what point you look at the substance, but the style of trump saying this is the swamp, this is what they do, this is how they fight, help me fight back against them. people don't always care about the substance as much as the style. i want to win, i want things to get done. >> reporter: well, people do care about substances, i do believe, and the statement you just laid out is one he could deliver. at the cia he did make that point, pete be, and he did say why isn't congressman come pay owe not standing with the men and women who put their lives on the line? clayton: ed, you know what this plays out and looks like, and there's a lot of people saying if you don't have those cabinet players in place, it could really hamper your first 100 days. >> reporter: it's like home alone for some of these departments. they have very few people in place to actually implement the

changes he wants to make, and frankly, you have a lot of obama people who stayed behind because the new trump administration asked them to because they need to keep running things. some statement came out of the state department yesterday, and it had a name attached to it, mark toner, who used to be the spokesman for the obama state department. he's still over there in some capacity. and so to pete's broader point as well, the agenda that donald trump wants to push forward is going to be hampered by the lack of this team in place. but also if they start taking their message in other directions. abby: it could be politics at its worst. how much of this are concerns they have with these picks and how much of it is that it was president trump that actually picked them? >> reporter: yeah. most of it does seem like politics. at the end of the day, chris wallace said it last hour, you've got 51 votes instead of the 60 because harry reid changed the rules. this helps mitch mcconnell, this helps donald trump as president. so a lot of this is just noise

pete: president trump now entering his second first day as president of the united states, and already he's putting his campaign promises into action and arranging more meetings with foreign leaders. of. abby: how will president trump's words help america and the entire world? clayton: here to weigh this now, fox news contributor steve hilton. steve, nice to see you this morning. >> good to be with you. clayton: well, president trump is signaling the end of the ruling class. i want to play this and see, get your sense of this. take a listen. [cheers and applause] [laughter] clayton: what he did say the other day is he wants to return america to the people out of the hands of the elites in washington.

do you think he can get it done? >> i think he can and, actually, i'm glad you highlighted that, because for me, that was the most important and significant part of what he said in his address. and it signaled the biggest change if he actually delivers it. but i think the thing we need to focus on is when you remember all the problem promises he made in the campaign, the really specific things about cutting taxes and building a wall and controlling our borders and helping our vets, all those specific things, that's great. and i'm sure that he can deliver those promises because they're pretty simple and straight forward. and if he gets it done, that'll be something that i think everyone can see and understand. but in terms of attacking this problem of the ruling class and the power that the special interests have over our government system, that's not really as simple. that's about reforming the way government works, it's about taking on that centralized power that's been there for decades the way that businesses give political donations to members

of congress so that they get the subsidies that help them keep control of their industries the way th big and bureaucratic. all of that requires a really detailed reform plan that isn't really the same as those simple campaign promises. now, i don't know whether trump and his team have got such a plan because it's not really the stuff that he talked about in the campaign. but if he really wants to give power back to people, as he said -- and i completely agree with that -- he's really got to reform government in a way that hasn't happened for decades. pete: the president has been meeting were nigel percentage, he's meeting with theresa may on friday, this phrase be america first, some have suggested that means we're closed from the world, but how do you think that creates new opportunities with allies and potentially new friends? >> well, i think the most important thing to bear in mind when we think about trump's impact on foreign policy and international relations is the single idea that i think defines

trump's character most clearly and is the biggest contrast with his predecessor, and that's strength. i think trump's strength is incredibly important. i think he wants to project american strength around the world. that's such a difference from what we've seen in the last eight years because what's actually happened, particularly when you think about, i think, the defining event in foreign relations over the last eight years, and that was obama's approach on syria and the red line where he basically said you can do whatever you want in any country anywhere around the world, and america will just let you get away with it -- abby: well, it also -- >> that gave the green light to the chinese regime, to the north koreans, to putin to do whatever they wanted. and i think that's going the change -- abby: you mentioned putin -- >> trump focused on brexit, for example, as an example of a difference in how he will handle international relations and really shake things up, and i think the fact that he's seeing prime minister theresa may

[laughter] abby: love you. clayton: let's talk about all these marches that unfolded over the past day, past 24 hours x there were hundreds of thousands of people. but it seems like the message may have been muddied by system of the celebrities that took to the podium to talk about blowing up the white house and other things. do you think that it missed its mark? >> i believe that all of those messages, let's blow up the white house, we hate donald trump, we don't want to talk to him, i believe the missed opportunity -- it's a little bit sad, because some of the messages of the women, equity and pay, you know? because sometimes even today men get more money than the women who are doing the job. you saw that movie hidden figures, and those ladies were black women, so they were really disenfranchised. so that's still going on. there's a lot of convenience against girls and women and human trafficking, domestic violence, all of that is to very important. so we do want equity, job

equity, pay equity, we want to be safe. and those messages were missed because of the emotional whatever, upheaval, and we don't like him. we just don't like him. europe, mr. trump has beautiful women in his family, they're brilliant and beautiful, that's a double bonus. of he loves women, he works with women, be i think the ladies are missing an opportunity to get the important messages out. pete: often times -- i was at that rally, some women's issues can be reduced down to just pro-life or pro-choice, and there were some pro-life groups that wanted to take part in the rally and were not allowed. why does it get reduced down to that? >> some of my sisters were there. i had to repent and let jesus heal me so i could deliver a non-emotional, fact-filled message. so the little baby girls in the womb, what about them? if you push out the pro-life message, who's going to represent those little girls who

are being aborted? i mean, i don't understand why if it's a real sisterhood, how they could leave out the babies in the womb, the mothers who have been hurt by abortion. i think that's part of the message. abby: you're so right about that. your thoughts on this as well, the media misreporting a mlk bust, time magazine tweeting that it had been removed from the oval office. they had to retract that statement and say actually maybe a secret service member was block its way. what did you make of that whole thing? >> i am so glad that president donald trump knows how to tweet. [laughter] he will quickly correct many things. the bust of my uncle, martin luther king jr., is there. a reporter was standing this front of it so they couldn't see it. i was at the cathedral yesterday and they said mr. trump was asleep during the service. no, you close your eyes and you get into the music. then he and his wife melania got

up and did a standing ovation. the bust is still this, they weren't asleep, they were awake. but we're media, i'm glad to be here. let's not feel like we're lumped in with all of that, because there is still some good media. we're good media, guys, so keep -- pete: i think that's a fair thing. why report and tweet before you get the facts? why the eagerness -- clayton: right. how do you headache that leap all of a sudden? -- make that leap all of a sudden? >> unbelievable. yeah finish president president just looking to discredit him in your mind? >> i think they were picking apart. for instance, when mr. trump said our blood is red and we're not going to be prejudiced at all, i don't believe in color blind. we see each other, we respect each other. joseph's coat of many colors that his father israel gave him, we want the muslims and the jews to remember they had the same daddy, all that kind of stuff, i

now declared in mississippi where a twister killed four people there. let's check in with adam for the very latest on this. >> reporter: this is an ongoing event, so it's something you still want to pay very close attention to, kind of a bull's eye right there in south georgia, north florida. the national weather service giving this their highest warning, so tornadoes still likely throughout the rest of the morning, into the afternoon. certainly something we're going to be paying close attention to. even as we speak, areas in south georgia/north florida under a tornado watch, and there are some to tornadoes on the ground. here we are watching that system right along the state line, either severe thunderstorms or some tornado warnings on the ground. this is going to settle a little farther off to the south and east, so the you're in front of this system, take cover here in the next little bit. this is something we're going to be watching throughout the rest of the day, guys. clayton: how long will this warning go on for, the watch? >> reporter: the warnings last

yesterday saying, quote: had a great meeting at cia headquarters yesterday, pack house. paid great respect to wall, amazing people. win. but on that point he got some disagreement from director john brennan who through an intermediary said he thought donald trump's statement in front of that wall, stars of the fallen, was, quote, a despicable display of self-aggrandizement. yet yesterday at the cia donald trump was talking about 400 employees standing in front of the wall of the stars of the fallen when he suddenly took a right turn into litigating news reports about the size of the crowd during his inauguration. be why did he do that? listen to his chief of staff, reince priebus, a short time ago on fox news sunday. >> by the media to delegitimize this president. and we are not going to sit around and let it happen. we are going to fight back tooth and nail every day and twice on sunday.

>> reporter: after his visit to the cia, sean spicer -- the president's press secretary -- came out and slipped a strip off the -- ripped a strip off the media saying the real story at the cia is the fact that mike pompeo, president trump's nominee for director, has not yet had a confirmation here's what spicer said about that. >> it's a shame the cia didn't have a director to be with him today because senate democrats are stalling the nomination of mike pompeo and playing politics with national security. that's what you guys should be writing and covering, that this -- instead of sowing division about tweets and false narratives. >> reporter: while nothing has been scheduled yet, we understand that mike pompeo's confirmation vote will likely happen tomorrow, and donald trump also sort of revising a little bit his tweet about the women's march a short time ago saying, quote: peaceful protests are a hallmark of our democracy, even if i don't always agree.

i recognize the rights of people to express their views. abby, pete, clayton? abby: all right, thank you, john. clayton: well, first impressions are everything, so what were the impressions president trump gave with his first speech as commander in chief? abby: here to analyze some top moments, pollster frank luntz. good morning, good to have you here. >> good morning, thank you. abby: members of the media can talk all today long, what really matters is what the american people think. and you found that out for us. >> well, there's one clip in particular that stood out where with he differentiated his leadership from those who came before him. there's been a lot of arguments about what he said or didn't say, but this clearly was the most impactful moment of his inauguration speech. let's take a look. >> today we are not merely transferring power from one administration to another or from one party to another, but we are transferring power from washington, d.c. and giving it back to you, the people.

what truly matters is not which party controls our government, but whether our government is controlled by the people. >> that's powerful. whether our government's controlled by the people, now, donald trump says that he wrote that speech. that's the best line. it's a line that i would have been proud to have created. it demonstrates that there really is a change in focus, it demonstrates this there's a change -- that there's a change in the commitment to keeping your promises and saying what you mean and meaning what you say. there are other things in the speech i might have done differently, but that is speech perfection. he should be applauded for that. clayton: if someone had handed you just a transcript of that speech and said that this was delivered by bernie sanders up in vermont, would you have believed it? >> well, i would have expected that he would have talked about making the rich poor, i would have expected -- [laughter] that he would have talked about a lot of free stuff.

so, no, actually, i -- it sounds like a donald trump speech. but he's speaking to millions of people who feel forgotten and feel betrayed, and they won't feel -- pete: and why do i think the protesters would not have come out if it had been bernie sanders speaking. clayton: that's for sure. pete: you saw those protesters firsthand, frank, you tweeted about your experience at the women's march. we're going to put that up. i've never seen such ineffective protesters in my life. they carry love trump's hate while shouting disgusting comments. you talk about the effectiveness of the inaugural. would you say the protests were ineffective as a response? >> well, i got hit directly by it, and i've debated whether or not to talk directly about it. i do about a hundred paid speeches a year, but a woman walked up to me in the marriott marquee, and she shouted you fascist -- and then two other words that would get me fired from your network -- and she

threw this red confetti glitter right in my eyes, and she picked up another handful, and she was no more than six inches away, and i was covered with this stuff. and since when do you have the right or just the ability to attack people in a private setting, in a private matter? i mean, you're going to end up hurting someone. i'm going to tell you something, these protests are out of control. the language is out of control. there are 8, 9, 10-year-olds watching this. they read these horrible words from these signs, and to have to face this personally -- you can see i get choked up. i never thought this would be america. i never thought this would happen in this country. abby: frank, i'm sorry you had to deal with that. that along with madonna saying she's thought many times about blowing up the white house, what do you think they were trying to accomplish yesterday? >> i think they want to prove they can be as loud and on obnoxious and in your face as possible, i think they want to try to intimidate the trump

administration. but there is no unity. we're not going to cure these divisions. this is going to go on not just for months, but probably for years. i really think we are seeing not the end, but the beginning of this violent action in this country. pete: frank luntz, thanks for your analysis. it is, it's an attempt to discredit, and as reince priebus said on fox news sunday, they want to fight back tooth and nail every day and twice on sunday. abby: thank you, frank. emotional. i mean -- pete: yeah, listen, the resorts to physical violence shows you how bankrupt those ideas are. anyway, the president wasting no time calling out the press for reckless reporting. >> i have a running war with the media. they are among the most dishonest human beings on earth. reconciliation -- budget reconciliation process, which is at the end of the summer, falls. so we may actually see executive orderses signed with regard to jobs, trade and immigration this week, and certainly we will see the approach of how tax reform will play out, but in terms of the actual vote getting through the congress, we probably won't see that until the budget reconciliation, end of scherr. then when i said is it going to be retroactive, he said, well, that is what we are going to be debating, '17 or '18. so i just want to make sure expectations are clear. obamacare and the repeal and replace is number one priority, but this week, i just hung up with a senior official from the trump presidency, and he told me this week they're going to sign, he is going to sign executive order on trade, immigration and jobs. so that's what we're going to be talking about on my show. clayton: we had a tax genius, worked at the treasury department, he said it's going to be very difficult to do individual tax reform in the first four years. he thought corporate could be

handled quickly, but now it looks like we may have to wait, and the first 100 days, this could get pushed off -- maria: well, i don't want to say we're not going to be discussing and having a plan in this place with tax reform, because there's no doubt that's the priority. however, in terms of getting the law passed, whether it's 20%, 15% corporate tax which is what president trump wants, ryan's plan is 20%, we may not see the devil in the details this the end of the summer. this is coming from ted cruz and my interview on friday. but again, the economic story is the priority for the trump administration. what this trump official just told me on the phone is that this upcoming week we're going to see several executive orders signed, in particular as it relates to jobs, imgriggs and trade. and then -- immigration and trade. and then, of course, he caps the end of the week with a meeting with u.k. prime minister theresa may. so there is a major focus on economic growth. i have no tout that's what's going to be the priority, even if we don't see the law happen

how does that play out? >> this is just like what we saw during the campaign which worked very effectively for candidate trump. look, i kind of wonder whether it makes sense to spend the first 48 hours of a new administration arguing about crowd sizes, who ultimately cares whether it was, you know, slightly larger or the same as barack obama's, but clearly this new president and his press secretary, sean spicer, have decided to lay down a marker to push back against the press, to make clear -- whether it's crowd size or the false report about removing the martin luther king bust from the to value office - or the oval office -- to make clear they're going to stay on the same war footing against the press which, of course, is very unpopular these days. pete: well, and his approach has been we're going to let no slight go unanswered. they started it, the media started talking about numbers, so we're going to punch back. is all of this part of saying your stranglehold is over, we will control the narrative, and do you think they can continue that?

>> well, they certainly can continue it, and this president hasn't been shy about, after 18 months of battling the press, the question is does it make sense to let every slight not go unanswered, because now we're into the governing phase, and we've got to teal with obamacare -- deal with obamacare and tax reform and all the priorities the president says he has. if he's constantly doing this, it creates great copy for us, but it could take away from what he, the main priorities that he needs to push through capitol hill. and so i'll reserve judgment on the volume and the tone and the relentlessness of it. we're not in the m ca pain anymore. pete: sure. he looks out and sees a press that's stacked against him. cnn did a five minute segment about what if he and mike pence were assassinated. protests that are overreported, reported just like it's the inauguration, and senate democrats are trying to block his confirmations. he can choose to capitulate or fight back.
