to have that open and frank discussion. there is a moment now we can build even stronger special relationship. it >> martha: at the news conference coming one day after moscow's president cancels his scheduled face-to-face with president trump and another move that will provoke controversy, mr. trump asked to speak by phone with vladimir putin. chris wallace, anchor of "fox news sunday" ." >> good to be with you, martha. it >> martha: at there is so much to talk about. we heard this morning that the president did end up speaking with the president of mexico, and they had a phone conversation but they're not going to discuss the details of that with regards to the wall. what you make of all this, chris? >> what i make of all this is there's a big difference between being a candidate out on the stump giving a line about we are going to build a wall and mexico is going to pay for it and get big cheers and getting millions of votes apparently and saying

that when you're the president of the united states, and not only have the executive order that called for the wall, but having one of your top officials saying maybe will have have a 20% tax on any export coming from mexico into this country. he put mexico into this position. if you're going to have a real negotiation, you have two be able to negotiate with some roo room. with the president and his team did in this week is put the president of mexico in a difficult position at the point of national honor that he was forced to cancel the visit, and it's going to be very hard for both of them to climb down from the position they put themselves in and try to work out a deal. it >> martha: it do you think this is just president trump doing things the way he does them? he talked about bilateral agreements with every country and he is a coaching laying out a very strong marker and we would imagine, backing

off and fighting off compromise. it >> the difference is, if you are in a deal with a contractor or someone who owns some land in atlantic city, that's a close conversation. if you are doing this on the international front, everybody hears about it and when they saw what president trump was saying and doing, it just makes it almost impossible for the president of mexico to negotiate with president trump now. now, he was forced to give a speech to the mexican people on wednesday night saying he was not going to pay for the wall and to cancel it on thursday. it you've his political opponents, the socialists party saying that if he makes any kind of a deal with president trump, he'll be selling them asking people out. it was very instructed today when he pointed to donald trump

and teresa may come a big difference there. that was the good it donald trump. that was a trump i've seen in private. quiet, courteous, sober, good sense of humor, you talk about those special relationships between britain and the united states at one point. teresa mae called on a british reporter who asked a terrible question. he said of all the reporters, that's when you have to call on? there goes the relationship. that's kind of the way that the president has to go, particularly in the beginning. it may work with domestic groups, i think it's a much more sensitive situation when you're dealing with foreign leaders and international sensibilities. >> martha: it there's a lot of comparison between reagan. let's put this quote up from newt gingrich earlier today appeared he says this. "the inaugural address represented a direct threat to

the left. and a had on challenge." he said that margaret thatcher looks much more like trump at this point. your thoughts. >> first of all, i wouldn't make that trump, may comparison to reagan, thatcher. teresa mae and donald trump are talking about a trade deal, it's not quite the same high-stakes. i think newt gingrich makes a good point about how trump represents a direct and systematic threat to the power elites in this country as margaret thatcher did to the power elites in britain at that time. the left was ruling the country, the trade unions were ruling the country, she took them on and she defeated them. what you're talking about here with donald trump, we'll see if it happens, is that same kind of

laws when it comes to participation in any type of federal efforts to try to round up the families are living here peacefully and disrupting those families because we have the immigration system in place. >> martha: excuse me, president trump's first priority is to get criminal illegal aliens out. people who have committed offenses, people like the man who killed that child. why would you have any albums without question rick wouldn't you want illegal aliens out of your city? >> absolutely. in fact, for the last 20 years we've worked alongside federal officials to go after those criminals. we work to ensure any of those individuals who want to commit violent crimes that they are caught and they are detained and they are deported. it >> martha: when you bring someone in for a potential

criminal offense, do you ask them about their documentation? do you follow up with them about their status? >> if we pick up an individual who has committed a crime against our city, a violent crime, absolutely. we do everything we need to do to be sure that they are detained, we need to work with ice, and they are deported back to their countries. we don't use local law enforcement to go out there and round up families that are living peacefully. >> martha: we're about to speak to a mom who lost her son to someone who is here illegally, but had never committed a crime. her argument is, why hits he even here? will get her own words. if this man was embryo in this country, what you say to her? >> i'm the father of two daughters, it's heartbreaking when individuals lose their children or their family members to anybody.

what i would say, we need to collectively ask the president and the congress to reform a broken immigration system so that people come out of the shadows so that we are able to make sure there's access to documentation whether it's in the form of work permits or visas, and recognizable law-enforcement has it said. if people are out of the shadows and their fully participating, then crime can be confronted. any type of reform. >> martha: it mary, thank you very much. as i just mentioned, our next guest is outraged by her cities defiance. matthew is writing on his motorcycle when a drunk driver rolled through a stop sign, hit him, and dragged him to his death. the killer, was an undocumented immigrant from ecuador. i'm joined now by marina

>> martha: you just heard the mayor and boston, and they talk a lot about the fact that we are a country of immigrants, that we should be open arms, that we should be kicking people out, we don't want to separate families, what goes through your mind? >> we are a country of legal immigrants. i have members in my family that are legal immigrants, my grandparents came here legally. that's the defining word there. legally. i welcome legal immigrants with open arms. when you come here illegally and you break our laws, we cannot tolerate that. every illegal alien -- my family has been separated. i don't have the option of calling my son or texting my son or striping with my son. i get i get to visit her grave site visit my son.

massive trade deficits and a little help on the very weak border must change now" ." watch this. >> if he's not going to come here to discuss, maybe we should have the meeting now. we have a trade deficit with mexico. that has to stop. we've spent billions of dollars defending the borders of other nations, it's high time we do that here in the united states. >> martha: trace gallagher here with the latest. >> hey, martha. we should know their criticism of the trump administration handling the wall issue. three of the country's largest newspapers, "the new york times," "washington post," and our corporate cousin, "the wall street journal" which called it "amateur hour" ."

the main point of contention is in the wall itself but rather trumps vow to make exculpate for the wall. yesterday the admin's floated the idea of proposing a. "the washington post" argues that the mexican imports would simply drive up the cost of goods coming north, meaning that ultimately american consumers and businesses would end up paying for the wall. studies also showed that improving trade between the u.s. and mexico in recent years wages in mexico have gone up, giving mexican citizens more incentive to stay south of the rio grande. despite canceling a meeting next week with president trump, mexican president has shown he certainly hasn't shut down any diplomatic channels. mexican opposition lawmakers aren't nearly as restrained, accusing president trump of "hostile action." "the wall street journal" writes about trump saying "he is

already learning that nations can't be bullied like g.o.p. candidates or ceos" ." mr. trump said as a candidate, he treats america's friends that are the mr. obama did, but his first move has been to treat mexico like mr. obama treated israel. conservative columnist and fox fox news contributor wrote that we should by all means build the wall, but making mexico pay for it is a "punitive and gratuitous act of humiliation" ." >> martha: joining me with more, sean duffy with one of president trump's earlier supporters in congress and fox news contributor and analyst. good to have both of you here. let me start with you on this. you here with the editorials are saying out there. what's your reaction? >> first, i want to say that it's refreshing that we are seeing editorial pages that we should build a wall.

it's in our interest to secure our border to decide who comes in and order of our country. i share some of the concern. we don't wanted to engage with a trade war with mexico. i'm going to leave it to mr. trump, president trump, to figure out how to get mexico to pay for it. the 20's% tariff. maybe there's going to be a visa security. there's a number of way that you can do with it and still engage positively with mexico. the key is we have to buy into border security. one of the thing, martha, people are saying the border is secure, there's not a problem. there were 60,000 unaccompanied minors that came across the border in 2016. this border is not secure and it's our job to keep it secure and keep america safe.

julie, what's your take >> martha: this may be president trump's way of starting the negotiation. we've seen how he works before appeared he lays down and actually strong marker and this morning, we see that after he tweeted another very strong tweet, what he got was a phone call from the president of mexico. maybe he's getting somewhere. >> i'd be curious to their content of that phone call because what you're doing is taking an ally and humiliating them and a very public way. that's no way to start and negotiation, that is no way to deal with our allies and our friends, especially when we are bending over backwards. on the one hand, we are punishing the people in the country that have been partners with us in both trade, neighbors, and we seem to be rewarding people in countries that have wished us and our

national interest ill. that's no way to start a negotiation. >> martha: we know donald trump does not like the trade deficit. he wants to see that number more favorable and he wants to see bilateral trade arrangements. when you look at what congress is seen, even tell us of this is what your understanding is is for that 20% tax to come back in. it would not have a big impact on american makers of car parts? american companies would end up paying that 20% tax. >> this has been looked at for all countries that import goods into the u.s., not just mexico. it's being floated not just buy the house, but by the senate and were discussing that with president trump. that's a broader discussion on tax reform that will hopefully keep more jobs in america. >> martha: what i'm asking is, i understand it is a broader

question. if the 20% happens, is this a way that the administration might find to put the burden on u.s. companies to pay for the well, essentially, or to pay for a big chunk of the wall, does i get president of mexico a little saving room to say we are all sharing this cost here? >> i think to allow your negotiating an adversary to save face. we are not isolating mexico by themselves. this would be a tax that applies to all foreign countries on their imports. again, mr. trump could say if this was applied, then mexico, because of the tax, paying for the wall themselves. one other thing on the wall, martha, in my community, i'm in rural wisconsin, we have hundreds of thousands of meth that's come into our key community

"the media should be embarrassed and humiliated and keep its mouth shut and listen for a while" ." "the media here is the opposition party. you're the opposition party. it the media is the opposition party." molly hemingway are here now. molly, there has been a lot of outrage over this comment, you say in a way, it was taken somewhat out of context to some extent. what do you mean? >> more than that, i think it was not that controversial what he said.

it mirrors a lot of what public enemies said and the aftermath of the 2016 election. it's absolutely true that the media didn't do a good job of covering this race, they misread the fundamentals, they got it wrong and pretty much every way possible, in response, they didn't really reflect and try to change how they recovering things. they didn't say we need to do a better job covering the country, they do make short-term changes by focusing on facts instead of pushing narratives, they gave no indication that they're making long-term changes in terms of hiring or promotion spirit the reaction is a bit much given up this is just the fact of the matter, the media are in opposition to trump and both sides like fighting with each other. it >> martha: i think that's backed up by the fact that we see so much focus on some of these more trivial stories that are being put out there and you do on the policy and exactly what's happening at the white house. let's put up a full-screen quote

from an editor from a new yorker hood at this to say. he said "we need to fess up and do our work ferociously and furiously. " where was this ferber to be a great journalist and benghazi? suddenly they woke up? >> i'll tell you where it was, it was on the pillow that they put underneath barack obama. "saturday night live" talked about that when he ran with hillary. they never got their hands off of that pillow. the press coverage of barack obama was soft for eight years and also in the press now is finding its way. it steve banner was right and i'll give you an example. "usa today" is a headline said "florida city caves to president trump" ." they make it "cave" because the

press prefers opposition. >> martha: it molly, what's in the future? where does this all go? does it continue or is there any kind of self reflection on the part of some media outlets to say there is a voice out there that's happening, people are stirring in the nation, this is what prompted this election, and we need to listen to them. >> i'm a bit worried on both sides because we have an administration that is playing fast and loose with the facts, but we don't have a media that can be taken seriously back and hold that administration accountable. at precisely because they didn't do a good job for the last eight years. what would be great is really to see some change and good faith efforts on the part of the press. they've done a good job of whipping one side of the country into a frenzy, but the rest of the country has largely tuned them out. that's not healthy. the power of the press is predicated in large part to not behaving in a largely partisan way. i would hope that more reporters, and there are a few who are doing a good job with

this, would calm down, stop pushing stories that turn out to be false, which is having at an alarming rate. any of the stories coming out of the transition, start being people that we can trust to hold accountable for the chubb administration >> my advice to the white house is to keep your foot on the gas. the only thing i objected to was when steve banner told the press to shut up. i don't think it's a good idea for a member of the government to be telling a member of the press to shut up. i love the fact that the trump administration is pushing back from the president on down. they should and the media has earned it. it's going thank you very much. great to see you both. >> martha: from battles of the media that we're just disgusting to the wall. president trump had a very busy week.

pre-born because they truly are more precious gifts. >> martha: a strong message. i know that mike pence was there today as well. give me a sense. it characterized if you could for our audience with this crowd was like. what you felt out there. >> i felt this crowd was very energetic, it was a little bit cold out here, but everyone was excited. i was amongst the crowd, when vice president pence came, i hadn't gotten back yet. they would let any of us go bac back. secret service was locking it down. i had a great opportunity to speak with kids, young men and women who came all the way from north dakota to the march. everybody was really excited and they were here because there is a sense of energy, but also the purpose for them being here, standing for those who are voiceless and have no way to stand up for themselves. it's going how do you feel about the fact that this march that's

happened every year for the last 44 years, tends to get very little coverage and a lot of media outlets and yet, we saw the march that happened last week, the march were women, that was wallpapered all over television? >> we shouldn't be surprised. a lot of times when these things happen, especially when there is a spiritual component of it, the reason why i stand for life as i believe god created life. we live in a world that is anti-god in a lot of ways paid we can be surprised when certain things get more play than other others. that can't deter us from the truth. one of the things i said was that we have to stand firm on truth no matter if people like it or not. it doesn't change what's important. it doesn't change what is true. >> martha: your thoughts on president trump, who at one point in his life said he was pro-choice and now says he is pro-life. a lot of people go through a transformation. what do you think?

>> i'm excited. honestly, i hope for any administration that they care about life. my hope is that the administration takes care of not only life of the pre-born, but those that are here and struggling as well. i know president trump has gone through some transformations, many people do that in their personal lives. my biggest thing is getting to people, getting to the citizens to understand that it's a heart issue whether comes to life. whether the initiation promotes laws and regulations or reduces others that promote life is great. that's another thing. the important thing is the citizens of our country look at each other and take care of each other and whole life in high esteem. >> martha: a very good to have you with us. the president's first week is now in the books and what grade did he get? our panel liberty mutual stood with me when i was too busy with the kids to get a repair estimate.

♪ >> martha: it today marks the end of a stunningly active first week in the oval office for president donald trump. we saw a rush of executive orders, policy, media slum fest fests. he wanted to grade president trump's first week in the white house. we bring in the professors here. professor goolsby, let's start with you. i'm thinking if i want to guess what will give him. it laid on me. it was the grade for the week? >> looked, it was first week likes that, who needs enemies? he announced several executive orders, but he also contradicted himself multiple times.

he announced a tony% tariff on mexico only to saint no, no, no i didn't mean it. he engaged in battles over crowd size, went to the cia. i mean, it was a week unlike any other that we've seen, i would grade at the worst opening week that a president has had an modern time. >> martha: what is that great? >> low. incomplete. >> martha: at their assembly room for improvement i guess. let me go to you mercedes. how do you think the week went? when you look forward from here, we are going to look back at this first week and said here's what mattered. >> clearly, i might be an easy greater, i think doll junkets in a. it's clear that he's going to be all talk he has made it a point to move his agenda forward aggressively. we look at executive orders, he's actually talking to a wide variety of constituents.

one being the pro-life communit community. he spoke to union leaders when he withdrew from the tpp, he spoke to corporate leaders as well. talking about what we need to do to ensure we have. i think what you're finding with donald trump is that he wants to deliver. he wants to be true to his word and what you're finding is, over 65% of americans are saying we agree with this agenda. >> martha: you make a great point, mercedes. he has gone straight to his constituencies. the union, corporate leaders that he knows he make deals with in terms of more manufacturing this country. even the rank and file of the intelligence agencies who in the end, you're never going to get everything a person, they seem to support him and say they're not going to miss some of those leaders that they had very much. >> well, we'll see. much of what prompted could be a

tremendous improvement donald trump successfully divided democrats by playing to union labor interests and other things where you see ways that a democratic party can be divided and trumpet make it his way on a number of things. then you have another narrative and that other narrative is distracted, distracted, distracted. when trumpet is focused, when trumpet is doing the things and sticking with the things are useful and helpful for him, he is doing really well. when he gets distracted by the sides of his crowds or fighting about the illegal vote count, these things and take them off topic, not so hot. you can see there and they are, the possibility for presidency gets hopelessly derailed. we don't know yet, but he certainly is the makings of both potential outcomes there. >> martha: austen, chris brings up this issue of some of the sideshows that are going on

here. there's a lot of focus on those sideshows and a lot of venues, especially the media, but the people out in the country, are focused on things that affect them, that matter to them. while many people want to keep pushing these story lines and in many ways donald trump has been helping him by putting them out there, will it matter? >> donald trump is the source of why we are paying attention to those things. he cannot let them go. i actually agree that there could be two different versions of trump, i could go one way or another. the one thing i would observe is if donald trump is nothing like donald trump, then he will probably succeed. that is, if he can stay focused without impulse control problems, if he cannot lead either his ego or his anger get in the way of making his policy and if he can decide on clear details, i think he could be effective at pushing his agenda. i don't agree with that agenda, but i think he could be

effective. i just haven't seen it from this week, at least, that there is any evidence that he can do that. i actually think the evidence was quite the opposite, that it wasn't the democrats being divided, it was the republicans being divided. >> martha: in the end, you look at everything i got done. if there is lot of things that got started. the files are open, and just a couple of days. mercedes, i want to get your thoughts on the relationship with mexico's president. we know that that dialogue reopened earlier today. >> i think it's a bit of a game of posturing. i think what you're saying is in fact that donald trump even talks about, you set the standard high. i think were donald trump, he really wants to push out this idea of saying look, we're going to move forward and build this wall. it somehow were going to have mexico pay for it. they don't want to move forward

on the 20% tariff, it's interesting to see how this is going to play out between congressional republicans and the president on this issue of mexico. i think it's important to understand that what we have seen, the unit's states have gone a trade surplus to a trade deficit today. in the end, i think donald trump is saying it's a one-sided deal, we have to fix it and we have to do is going to benefit the american workers. >> martha: it thank you so much. great having you all here, we'll see you all next time. thanks a million. newt gingrich writes that while teresa mae is being compared to margaret thatcher, it's really president trump who echoes her. you decide. he's a quote of the day for you from britain's prime minister back in 1984.
