tv   Outnumbered  FOX News  February 15, 2017 9:00am-10:01am PST

9:00 am
>> jon: we are back in an hour. it "outnumbered" starts now. >> harris: let's begin with the official start today of a key relationship with israel. you see the president and the first lady standing out front there because they were expecting the arrival of the israeli leader. he's expected to get to the white house at any moment for their first face-to-face meeting since the president took office. a lot of things to get to today. at such an important picture as we look outside the south
9:01 am
portico and the car arrives there with the prime minister of israel. we know from our reporting and just the recent years under president obama how to be and cooled the relationship has been between the united states and israel. is this going to be the beginning of something different, something new? some controversy rolling out with it. it right now we watch him greet the leader of israel. we expected to be a warm and positive meeting today. the world can watch together. i don't know if there's any audio that we'll be able to discern. i can lower my voice for just a couple of seconds and to see that's possible. all right, the microphones are not quite close enough to say
9:02 am
what they are hearing. clearly a very important picture to take in. i'm going to bring it out to the couch on "outnumbered" ." we don't want to miss the optics of this picture. at sandra, as we are watching this, two things come to mind and that is the two state solution between the palestinian government and israel is not something that he sees as necessary. he sees peace more important than that. >> sandra: they are about to have a very important conversation and that white house that could shape middle east policy for many years to come. it they will be holding a joint news conference following that. remember, benjamin netanyahu had very warm sentiment toward donald trump all the way through the campaign and the election process, not so much during the obama administration. >> pete: absolutely. having visited israel just last
9:03 am
year, the two state solution is on life support. it's not remotely viable. what you may see from this meeting is recognition that a way forward is standing strong. maybe moving the embassy, opposing the iran deal and standing shoulder to shoulder with benjamin netanyahu. the issues on the ground have changed the dynamics of the two state deal. i was on the ground, i walked in these so-called sediments. they are the reason the two state solution is no longer viable. >> harris: one of the things we wondered is that we might see our u.s. embassy moved to jerusalem and what that would look like. you've heard of the presidents say maybe they would do that.
9:04 am
oh, really, with the warming of this relationship, could we see that? i want to tell everybody what we are looking at because we've gone from outside to inside. the prime minister from israel, benjamin netanyahu has arrived. it they will eventually make their way into the setting that you see on the left side of your screen, that is they joint news conference location. each mental stepped up to a lecture in. >> meghan: you said the relationship between the obama administration and benjamin netanyahu was cool and it should be, i would say it was aggressively anti-israel for the past eight years. the president wouldn't let him speak in front of congress. it just seeing benjamin netanyahu come up to the white house and embrace our president and the first lady is a step in the right direction. i am very excited to see what happens today. it's really the changing of the guards. i think a lot of us that are pro-israel and have seen the
9:05 am
iran deal and complete and total disrespect to benjamin netanyahu is a very welcome change. it >> harris: they were looking at that iran deal, russia didn't like that. now we question where are we and all of that? >> melissa: a very interesting question, something we want to get color on. an interesting thing to note when they pulled up, melania trump was there to greet her as well. we haven't seen a lot of her at the white house and its significant giving that she is in new york during the week with her son who is in school. she did go to d.c. for this one. it's a sign of respect and hospitality and is meaningful. last week, we saw the same thing. he was out there to greet leaders from japan.
9:06 am
>> harris: will play a little bit that that tape. on your right as the video that you just watched at the top of the hour as it was rolling out and happening live. melania trump part of the mix. this is a big occasion on so many levels. that is a key ally and that part of the world. pete, this is a huge moment in history because of the difference in u.s. policy that mr. trump has been talking about that he values. peace in any sort of existing promise. we also saw members of his administration go and meet for the first time among the palestinians, that's a huge thing too. >> pete: indeed, they'll want to talk to both sides and get their understanding of the situation. a larger optic here is not just
9:07 am
israel, not just japan, but also the u.k. president obama has us at our friends will be our friends again. i think the two state solution for so long was slanted against israel because the recognition was there wasn't a good-faith partner on the palestinian side. we were told to keep handing it over, settlements are evil, the historical homelands of many of the jewish people. you can reorder and that and slanted toward your friends. i think that's what friends of israel are looking for. you've gotta love the fact that he's going first to our friends instead of running to cuba and it saying let's change that relationship. >> sandra: you think about the timing of this, benjamin netanyahu coming just days after following the resignation of the national security advisor,
9:08 am
general michael flynn. a significant moment for the trump administration and a possible moment that donald trump can change the conversation. >> meghan: i can't think. the obama administration didn't seem to care. i reassert the fact that he wasn't allowed to even speak in front of congress. quite the direct statement being made. it to say this is resetting policies is putting it very lightly. we'll have both of these two men together in front of our press corps. i understand there's a lot of complications and the administration right now that we will get to it later in the show. but right now, i feel very hopeful about this relationship. >> harris: you mention the child that the former administration has put on any ideas that benjamin netanyahu would put on the floor in congress. it's a little bit of a difference to note this morning.
9:09 am
it mitch mcconnell just a short time ago delivered remarks on the senate floor welcoming benjamin netanyahu and saying our nations face many common threats. now is the time to strengthen and perform this important partnership as we move from eight years of what he called "often needless tension." >> melissa: i think was on the couch with you guys that day when benjamin netanyahu was here and was not allowed to speak before congress. it was shocking to us here to see our ally, to see a country that is aligned with us shunned publicly and really insulted. he definitely felt the brunt of it. if you had friends around the country who are active in the
9:10 am
community that support benjamin netanyahu, you remember how angry they were during that tim time. i think this goes the distance to turning the page on the narrative right now. we have been talk about mike flynn, before that we were talking about the immigration ban, now maybe this is a new subject. >> harris: if we look back, some distance in history and the beginning of 2017, it's only been a few weeks. there is a lot to get to. i want to get back, if we can to the general flynn situation. you mentioned we try to get back to that later in the show. if we get this news conference, we will let it play out. here's one of the issues that has come up and if that's the idea of leaks coming out of the white house. i was doing some reading this morning. this is not just about the white house. national security, speak to me
9:11 am
about those leaks and how they interconnect. >> pete: you read the new york times piece this morning. it's all anonymously sourced, doesn't say who, how often. there is no evidence of collaboration or desire to benefit the trump campaign or russian intelligence. the fact that people -- it also always cites a formeradministrar current administration officials. you can have one current official and four former all of which are obama allies who are looking to undermine this presidency. the iran deal is a big part of this nexus. >> harris: that really has been the biggest point for me. what they agreed to that allowed our folders to commit she laid on their knees
9:12 am
holding their rifles to their back, whatever happened, whatever policy, was that in a side deal? that's a fair question. >> pete: general flynn wanted to be sure that the american people understood that as they mitigate the future of that iran deal, which all of us believed to be a terrible one. these leaks are incredibly detrimental to those on the ground doing our work, as well as the credibility of the united states when we try to work with allies who give you intelligence and work with you. and then some administration official leaks that. >> harris: now that we see the president taken to task his suspicions, how critical,
9:13 am
melissa, is it that they find those leakers? >> melissa: it leaves that suspicion forever with president trump. if they don't figure out who it is. there's a possibility -- >> harris: do they try to clean it up? >> melissa: i don't know. as we delve deeper into deeper and deeper into this, we reveal more to the outside community how our intel works and that does damage. at the same time, if the trump administration doesn't know who leaked them out in order to get rid of mike flynn, then they'll be suspicious of everybody in the intel community. i sort of feel like for the sake of the country, he should know, we shouldn't. >> harris: live picture now,
9:14 am
that is benjamin netanyahu then netanyahu and first lady melania trump. we may or may not get the type of warning that we always see, ivanka trump and her husband jared who has been tasked to work in the white house closely with the president. as they all take their seats and pull into position, you have the two lecterns there. we anticipate the two leaders to walk in next. what would be some of the things that we should start with? obviously, general flynn will come up i would think. >> sandra: i think right now everyone is wondering what i conversation is like. pete, if you could shed some light there on where they might begin with that.
9:15 am
>> pete: israel has had its back against the wall. it president trump's back is against the wall. they're going to look at each other and to say what's in the best interest of america and israel and our alliance and how do we stand together to stand firm on that, that may be our joint security around the world. >> meghan: support for israel isn't certainly a republican issue. chuck schumer came out against the iran deal, specifically because of his relationship with israel. it's still relevant that he did it. it's important to note that there are democrats, especially jewish americans that are in support. >> harris: the announcement in our room is at the president of the united states is walking up. at there he is, president trump and a benjamin netanyahu, the prime minister of israel.
9:16 am
let's watch. >> president trump: thank you. today i have the honor of welcoming my friend prime minister, benjamin netanyahu to the white house. with this visit, the united states again reaffirms our unbreakable bond with our trailers to ally israel. the partnership between these two countries built on our shared values has advanced the cause of dignity and peace. these are the building blocks of democracy. the state of israel is a symbol to the world of resilience in the face of oppression. i can think of no other state that's gone through what they've gone through. they've survived in the face of
9:17 am
genocide. we will never forget what the jewish people have endured. your perseverance in the face of hostility, your open democracy in the face of violence, and your success in the face of tolerance is truly inspirationa inspirational. the security challenges faced by israel are enormous, including the threat of a ransom nuclear ambitions, which i've talked a lot about. one of the worst deals i've ever seen is the iran deal. my administration has already imposed new sanctions on iran and i will do more to prevent iran from ever developing, i mean ever, a nuclear weapon. our security assistance to israel is that a all-time high, ensuring that israel has the ability to defend itself from
9:18 am
threats of which there are unfortunately, many. both of our countries will continue to grow. we have a long history of cooperation in the fight against terrorism and of the fight those that do not value human life. america and israel are two nations that cherish the value of all human life. this is one more reason why reject unfair and one-sided actions against israel at the united nations. they just treated israel, in my opinion, very, very unfairly. other international forums, as well as boycotts, that target israel. our administration is committed to working with israel and our common allies in the region towards greater security and stability.
9:19 am
that includes working towards a peace agreement between israel and the palestinians. the united states will encourage peace and really a great piece deal. we'll be working on it very, very diligently. very important to me, also. something we want to do. but as the parties themselves that most directly negotiate such an agreement. as with any successful negotiation, both sides will have to make compromises, you know that, right? i want the israeli people to know that these united states stands with israel in this struggle against terrorism. as you know, mr. prime minister, our two nations will always
9:20 am
condemn terrorist acts. peace requires nations to uphold the dignity of human life and it to a voice for all of those who are endangered and forgotten. those are the ideals to which we all and will always aspire and commit. this will be the first of many productive meetings. i, again, mr. prime minister, thank you very much for being with us today. mr. prime minister, thank you. >> president trump, thank you for the truly warm hospitality. you and melania have shown me and my wife sarah. i deeply value your friendship.
9:21 am
it was so clearly evident in the words you just spoke. israel has no better ally than the united states. and i want to assure you, the united states has no better ally than israel. our alliance has been remarkably strong, but under your leadership, i'm confident it will get even stronger. i look forward to working with you to dramatically upgrade our alliance in every field, security, cyber, trade, and so many others, and i certainly welcome your forthright call to ensure that israel is treated fairly in international forums and that the slander and boycotts of israel are resisted mightily by the power and moral
9:22 am
position of the united states of america. as you have said, our lives are based on a deep bond of common values and common interest. an increase they, values and interests are under attack by 111 it force. mr. president, you have shown great clarity and courage in confronting this challenge head on. you call for confronting iran's terrorist regime, preventing iran from realizing this terrible deal into a nuclear arsenal, and you have said that the united states is committed to preventing iran from getting nuclear weapons. you call for the defeat of isis, under your leadership, i believe we can reverse the rising tide of radical islam. in this great task, as in so many others, israel stands with
9:23 am
you and i stand with you. mr. president, and rolling back militant islam, we can seize an opportunity. for the first time in my lifetime, and for the first time and the life of my country, arab countries in the region do not see israel as an enemy, but increasingly, as an ally. i believe that under your leadership, this change in our region creates an unprecedented opportunity to strengthen security and advance peace. let us seize this moment together. let us bolster security. let us seek new avenues of peace, and let us bring the remarkable alliance between israel and the united states to even greater heights.
9:24 am
thank you, thank you, mr. president. >> president trump: again, thank you. we'll take a couple of questions. david brody, christian broadcasting. >> thank you, mr. president, mr. prime minister. both of you criticized the iran nuclear deal and called for its repeal. i wonder if you're concerned at all as a relates to not just national security advisor michael flynn, who recently is no longer here, but some of those events that have gone on with the communications of russia. if that will hamper this deal at all and keep around from becoming a nuclear state. secondly, how do you exactly turn that as a relates to the settlement issue? thank you. this before it michael flynn, general flynn is a wonderful
9:25 am
man. i think he's been treated very, very unfairly by the media. as i call it, the fake media in many cases. i think it's really a sad thing that he is treated so badly. i think in addition to that, from intelligence, papers are being leaked, things are being leaked, it's criminal action. it's been going on for a long time, before me. now it's really going on. people are trying to cover up a terrible loss that the democrats had under hillary clinton. i think it's very, very unfair what's happened to general flynn, the way he was treated at end the documents and papers that were illegally, i stress that, illegally leaked. it very, very unfair. as far as settlements, i'd like to see you hold back on settlements for a little bit. we'll work something out, but i'd like to see a deal be made.
9:26 am
i think a deal will be made. i know every president would like to, most of them have not started until late because i never thought it was possible, and it wasn't possible because they didn't do it. but we've known each other a long time, he's a smart man, a great negotiator and i think will make a deal. it might be a bigger and better deal that these people understand. let's see what we do. doesn't sound too optimistic. [laughter] >> that's the art of a deal. >> president trump: i also want to thank sarah. can you stand up? you've been so lovely and so nice to melania and i thank you very much. [applause] thank you. your turn.
9:27 am
>> please, go ahead. >> mr. president, and your vision for peace, are you ready to give up the notion of a "no" state solution and will you be willing to hear ideas from the prime minister? one more question, are you willing to fulfill the prime minister moving the u.s. embassy to jerusalem and if so, when? mr. prime minister, will you tell the president that you are backing off? >> president trump: i'm looking at two state and one state and i like the one that both parties like. i'm very happy with the one that both parties like. i can live with either one. i thought for a while that the two state might be the easier of
9:28 am
the two, but honestly, if the palestinians and the israelis are happy, i'm happy with the ones that they like the best. as far as the embassy moving to jerusalem, i'd love to see that happen. we are looking at it very, very strongly. we are looking at it with great care, great care, believe me. we'll see what happens. okay? >> thank you. i read yesterday that an american official said that if you ask five people what to states would look like, you'd get eight different answers. mr. president, if you ask five israeli, you get 12 different answers. but rather than deal with labels, i want to deal with substance. that's something that i hoped to do for years in a world that's absolutely fixated on labels and not on substance. here's the substance.
9:29 am
there are two prerequisites for peace that i laid out to you several years ago. they haven't changed. first, the palestinians must recognize the jewish state. they have to stop calling for israel to suction. it may have to people for israel's destruction. second, israel must retain the overriding security control over the entire area west of the jordan river. because if you don't, we know what will happen. otherwise, we will get another radical islamic terrorist state and the palestinian era exploiti exploiting the middle east. unfortunately, the palestinians that he mentally reject both requisites for peace. they call for israel's destruction and side their schools, inside their mosques, inside their textbooks. you have to read it to believe it. they even deny, mr. president,
9:30 am
are strong connection to our homeland. i suppose you have to ask yourself, why are called? the chinese are called chinese because they are from china. the japanese are called japanese because they come from japan. jews are called jews because there from judeo. unfortunately, the palestinians denied the past, they also poisoned the presents. they named public squares after mass murderers of israelis. they paid monthly salaries to the families of murderers, like the family of the terrorist who killed a young west point graduate who was stabbed to death while visiting israel. this is the source of the conflict. the persistent palestinian
9:31 am
refusal to recognize. that's the reason we don't have peace. that has to change. i wanted to change. not only have i not abandon these two prerequisites, they become even more important because of the rising tide of attitude that has swept the middle east. i want this to change. i want those two prerequisites of peace, substance, not labels, i want them reinstated. if anyone believes that i, as prime minister of israel, and responsible for the safety of my country would walk into a terrorist state, they are greatly mistaken. the two prerequisites of peace, recognition of israel as a state, they remain pertinent. we have to look for new ways,
9:32 am
new ideas, on how to reinstate and how to move peace forward. i believe that the great opportunity for peace comes from a regional approach. and it dominating our newfound arab partners in the preschool of peace. i greatly look forward to discussing this with you, mr. president, because, i think that if we work together, we have a shot. the >> president trump: and we have been discussing that and it is something that is very different, it hasn't been discussed before. it's actually a much bigger deal, much more important deal and a sense. it would take in many, many countries and would cover a large territory, so i didn't know that you would mention that, but now that you did, i
9:33 am
think we have some pretty good cooperation from people that in the past, would never have ever even thought about doing this. we'll see how that works out. katie from town hall, where is katie? >> thank you, mr. president. you said earlier and your remarks that both sides would have to agree. could you lay out a more specific compromise that you have in mind both for the israeli and palestinian's? mr. prime minister, what expectations do you have from the new administration on how to either amend the iran nuclear agreements or how to dismantle it altogether and how to overall work with the new administration to combat iran's increased aggression, not only in the last couple of months, but in the past couple of years as well? >> president trump: that's actually an interesting questio question. i think the israelis will have to show some flexibility, which is hard. it's hard to do.
9:34 am
they'll have to show the fact that they really want to make a deal. i think our new concept that we've been discussing for a while is a something that allows them to show more flexibility than they have in the past, because we have a lot bigger canvas to play with. i think they'll do that. i think will make a deal up, otherwise i wouldn't be happy, i wouldn't be here, i wouldn't be as optimistic as i am. i can tell you from the standpoint of me being from the standpoint of israel, i really think they want to make a deal. i think the palestinians have to get rid of some of that hate that they are taught from a very young age. they are taught tremendous hate. i've seen what they're taught. you can talk about flexibility they are too, but it starts at a very young age and it starts in the schoolroom.
9:35 am
they have to acknowledge, as you know, they're going to have to do that. there is no way i deal can be made if they're not ready to acknowledge a very, very great and important country. i think they'll be willing to do that also. i also think we'll have other players at a very high level and i think it might make it easier on both of palestinians and israel to get something done. thank you. very interesting question. thank you. >> you ask about iran. one thing is preventing iran from getting nuclear weapons, something that president trump and i i think are deeply committed to do. we are obviously going to discuss that. i think beyond that, president trump has led a very, very important effort in the last few weeks, just coming into the presidency. he pointed out the violations,
9:36 am
by the way, these ballistic missiles are inscribed in hebrew, israel must be destroye destroyed. the iranian leaders said our ballistic missiles are not intended against any country. no. they write on the missile in hebrew israel must be destroyed. challenging iran on its violations, imposing sanctions, preventing them, making them pay for the terrorism they commit throughout the middle east and beyond, well beyond, i think that's a change that is clearly evident since president trump took office, i welcome that. let me say this very openly, i think that if we work together, not just the united states and israel, but so many others in
9:37 am
the region who see eye to eye on the great magnitude and danger of the iranian threat, then i think we can roll back iran's aggression and danger. that's something that's important for israel, the arab states, i think it's vitally important for america. these guys are developing a nuclear arsenal, not a bomb. they want to have the ability to launch them everywhere on earth and including, and especially, eventually, the united states. this is something that's important for all of us. i welcome the change and i intend to work with president trump very closely so we can work this danger. >> mr. president, since your election campaign and after your victory, we've seen a sharp right and anti-semitic incidents
9:38 am
across the united states and i wonder what you say to those among the jewish community in israel and around the world who believe that your administration is playing with xenophobia and racist tones russian mark mr. prime minister, do you agree to what the president just set it said that israel needs to practice restraint? >> president trump: i just want to say that we are very honored by the campaign that we had. we were not supposed to crack 220 vote, we had 306. they said there's no way to 270 and there was tremendous enthusiasm out there.
9:39 am
i will say, we are going to have peace in this country. we are going to stop crime in this country, we are going to do everything within our power to stop long simmering racism and every other thing that's going on. a lot of bad things have been taking place over a long period of time. i think one of the reasons i won the election is that we have a very, very, very divided nation. very divided. hopefully, i'll be able to do some thing about that. it's something that was very important to me. as far as people, jewish people, so many friends, a daughter who happens to be here right now, a son-in-law, and three beautiful grandchildren, i think that you're going to see a lot different united states of
9:40 am
america over the next three, four, or eight years. i think a lot of good things are happening. and you're going to see a lot of love. thank you. >> i believe that the issue of settlements is not at the core of conflicts, nor does it really drive the conflict. i think it's an issue that has to be resolved. i think that also, we also are going to speak about it, president trump and i, so we can arrive at an understanding so we don't keep on bumping into each other all the time on this issu issue. on the question you said, you just came back with your question to the problem that i said. it's a label. what does he mean by two states? a state that doesn't recognize the jewish state? a state that basically is open for attack?
9:41 am
what are we talking about? costa rica? i talked about the conditions i believe are necessary for an agreement. if the recognition of a jewish state and israel's security for control over other areas. otherwise we'll get another failed state, another terrorist, islamic dictatorship that will not work for peace, but will work to destroy us, but also any hope for a peaceful future for our people. i've been very clear about those conditions. i haven't changed. if you read what i said eight years ago, it's exactly that. i repeated that again and again and again. if you want to do with labels, deal with labels, i'll do with substance. and if i could respond to something i know from personal experience, i've known president trump for many years, and to elude his team, some of
9:42 am
whom i've known for many years too, can i revealed jared, how long i've known you? he was never small, he was always big. he was always tall. i've known the president and i've known his family and his team for a long time. there is no greater supporter of the jewish people and the jewish states then president donald trump. i think we should put that to rest. >> president trump: thank you very much. it very nice. i appreciate that very much. [reporters talking over each other] >> harris: all right, we have just watched about 25 minutes of
9:43 am
the prime minister of israel, benjamin netanyahu, his visit to the right house. as you could hear, there was no official rapid up and walk off. there is a little bit of a leg and in the leg, where shouted questions, at least one that i could plainly hear alluding to what's been going on with the accusations of russians, and filtration is as good a word as you can say. certainly, communications with the trauma team. that's what's been reported. that question was shouted out, obviously that topic didn't come up on the initial questions, but by then, it had all wrapped up. two things really stood out as the two men were on stage together. if one was a comfort ability they have with one another. it seemed as more of a positive then the white house officials led us to believe.
9:44 am
you could feel that. it was visceral. these two men like each other. a departure from what we've seen earlier, with the former president, barack obama. of one thing also stood out when the president said i would like to see you and he actually turned to the prime minister of israel, i'd like to see you hold back on those settlements. i think will make a deal. then you heard benjamin netanyahu say that is the art of the deal. that moment, i think encapsulated the relationship they have now. let's bring it to the couch. >> melissa: there was a lot of love in the room for donald trump. he said there's no better ally to the u.s. >> pete: he got even more
9:45 am
specific than that. he ended by saying israel has no greater friend then donald trum donald trump. very specific and pointing that out. he understands the x essential nature, not going to ask us to do things to put our own security at risk. ultimately, if the palestinians don't recognize the right of israel to exist and won't allow israel to secure itself as he said, west of the jordan river. a second palestinian state would exist, every previous palestinian state turns into a terrorist state. we're not talking about costa rica here, we're talking about a potential second iran. i also loved the quote, he said we have the opportunity to reverse the tide of radical islam together. >> harris: we actually have that on video for moments ago. let's watch it together. >> our alliance was based on a
9:46 am
deep bond of common values and common interests. increasingly, those values and interests are under attack by one malevolent force, radical islamic terror. mr. president, you've shown great clarity and courage in confronting this challenge head on. >> meghan: honestly, this is exactly what i thought it would be. most people know that these two have been friends for years and years. i didn't know he had a relationship with the questioners, but we do. it's a complete and utter reset of our relationship with israel and it should be a time of good faith for america and israel right now. >> harris: his comments started by recognizing a country that had survived in a face of genocide. he said i will do more to prevent iran from ever developing a nuclear weapon. >> melissa: i think what was most significant is that those
9:47 am
who do not see eye to eye on everything. when you heard that exchange, you heard him say i like to hold you back on the settlements a little bit. benjamin netanyahu went -- he said that the art of a deal. they are joking back and forth. if they're not in lockstep. you don't have to believe that they agree on everything. there is no tension on that. that's very interesting. it doesn't mean they will agree on everything, it doesn't mean will go along with everything that he says, but they are very close. >> sandra: as we were teasing, he would be talked about the recent resignation of michael flynn -- sorry, i just lost out on my page here. he did react to that in a very similar way that we have seen him, saying that he's very unfairly treated during the entire process. he didn't really go any further
9:48 am
