sitting president lashed out at the media so intensely. >> unfortunately, much of the media in washington, d.c., along with new york, los angeles, in particular, speaks not for the people, but for the special interests, and for those profiting off a very, very obviously broken system. the press has become so dishonest that we don't talkm about it. we are doing a tremendous disservice to the american people, tremendous disservice. >> bill: the president singling out cnn and excoriating that network for "hateful coverage."or bernie goldberg will analyze that in just a few moments. on policy, the president said his administration is being damaged because people inside the u.s. intelligence agencies are leaking classified stuff. >> president trump: i spoke to the president of mexico, had a good call.

where you look. the middle east, a disaster. north korea, we'll take care of it, folks. we will take care of it all. i just want to let you know. i inherited a mess. >> bill: now, it should be noted, president obama said the same thing when he took over for president bush the younger. the tone of the press conference was combative, yet the president was in command, didn't take any guff, and answered moss of the questions directly. here is why national security advisor michael flynn was fired. >> president trump: the thing is, he didn't tell our vice president properly, and then he said he didn't remember, so either way, it wasn't very satisfactory to me. and i have somebody that i think will be outstanding for the position. >> bill: looking forward, the president said he will have a new executive order on refugees by next week. he will have a revision of obamacare ready by march. and he reiterated he doesn't

believe anything he does will be covered fairly by many in the press. joining us now from the white house, john roberts, who questioned the president today. so he did not answer you when you asked him if he had read the transcript of general flynn's conversation with the russian ambassador. were you able to get us any more information on that, john? >> bill, he did not answer me directly, only to say that from what he saw and what he heard, he believed that general flynn had not acted improperly.. i did a little bit of digging a this afternoon. i discover the president was in fact -- you won't hear this anywhere else, bill, exclusive information for you -- the president was, in fact, fully briefed on the content of those conversations that general michael flynn had with the russian ambassador, sergey kislyak, by people who would know what the content of the phone conversations was, andld that under repeated questioning during an investigation conducted by the white house counsel's office, general flynn, i am told, had a full recollection of what he talked about with the russian

ambassador. you will remember thatat general flynn had initially said that he didn't talk about sanctions, then he said, maybe d don't remember, not 100% sure. he is 100% sure, and he told the white house counsel's office and the people who talked to him in those interviews at the counsel's office was conducting the investigation, but he talkeh to the russian ambassador aboutt >> bill: now, i'm assuming that the white houseil counsel, what is his name again? >> don mcgahn. >> bill: i'm assuming that he is the one that briefed donald trump about it. there is a transcript available. i'm just wondering why the president didn't read it himself. perhaps we will learn that next week. but be that as it may, i thoughn that when he started off on the leakers, that this was a way to obscure if general flynn had really done any damage to this country. you know, you just deflect into a different area. did you see it that way? >> certainly. let me go back to what you said.

i will repeat.s fully briefed about the content of those conversations by people who would know what was said in those conversations, and we are not talking about the white house counsel. now, back to your question, bill. obviously, a lot for the president did today in that press conference was deflect. when you go off on the media about negative stories and fake news, you are deflecting from what the issues of the day are. you are trying to change the narrative. the same thing with the leaks. this is not about with the national security advisor did, who he talked to, what he said in those conversations. this is about the people whoth k leaked classified information. >> bill: that's a pretty serious subject. >> it is a serious subject, which is why the president has reached out to the department of justice to launch a criminal investigation into who was behind this.ve now, other presidents haved lodged investigations into leaks and they have really gone nowhere. i think scooter libby is probably one of the only people who have been caught up in recent memory, at least -- >> bill: dick cheney's chief of staff.

>> exactly. it was not being truthful in an interview. >> bill: let me ask you this. do you know who taped flynn? who taped him? >> it would be the nsa. >> bill: okay. >> they went to a fisa court and got a warrant for a wiretap and it is the nsa that typically -- >> bill: did flynn know? did flynn know? >> if you are talking to the russian ambassador, you should know. you got to be pretty assured -- >> bill: i said that.kn we don't know whether flynn was told. that he was being taped. we don't know that. >> they wouldn't tell him. >> bill: okay. this is fascinating. so flynn makes the call. he should know, being a sophisticated guy, that the russians are taping it, for damn sure, and that the nsa is probably taping it because it is a call to the russian ambassador. but they don't tell him, hey, we

are taping this. so that, then, if you look at the charges floating around, that flynn lied to the fbi about what he said, that is the latest. we will get onto this on the program a little bit later. that doesn't make any sense, doesn't stack up if flynn knew he was being taped. why would he lie to the fbi about it? i mean, he is going to -- that is a crime. >> you would think that a person about the sophisticated knowledge of electronic intercepts, as he did and would because he was the head of the dia, would not lie to the fbi. but the contents of theie intelligent conversation, he had a good insurance knowing it was being taped. maybe there is, i don't know, i'm just giving somebody the benefit of the doubt, maybe there was something about this idea that initially he didn't recall what he talked about. that would seem to be a stretch too. >> bill: all of that will come out, and we will report it honestly, unlike some of the others. i will hold john over for another minute. i will debate bernie goldberg down the line here on whether the president was unhinged in

the press conference. did you see him as unhinged at all? >> not at all. in fact, he made that point toot say, people would say he is ranting and raving, he is not, he is having fun. and i thought, and i talked to my colleagues about this, they have agreed with me, that the president has a level of confidence in that sort of setting now that he never did before. i think it is by virtue of the experience of going through the campaign, going through the election, the transition, and now being president of united states. but he has developed the confidence that he didn't have before. he stood up there for an hour and 20 minutes and knocked down a lot of the things that were thrown against him. i think he did a good job. >> bill: he is the best spokesman for him.e the cnn guys, are they mad, or are they saying this is bigger ratings for us, people tune in tonight? are they mad? >> i talked to jim acosta and he was quite happy that he got the amount of time he did with president trump, he had a very spirited back and forth. i think they both made their points and came out of it okay. >> bill: all right, john, we appreciate your good work.

>> bill: "impact segment" tonight, the swamp fights back. the subject of this evening's "talking points" memo. donald trump, largely elected president because he promised to reform washington. millions of americans are fed ud with intellectually dishonest politicians who are not looking out for them. mr. trump portrayed the nation's capital as a swamp. >> president trump: i want the entire corrupt washington establishment to hear the words we all are about to say. when we win tomorrow, we are going to drain the swamp! >> bill: but for every action, there is a reaction, and the law of unintended consequences is now hitting president trump. that is because the swamp is

inhabited by many different creatures, some of whom want to destroy the president. right now, the national media despises mr. trump, as we pointed out and backed up with facts. also, some folks working for the federal government want to damage the president. that is why you are seeing the leaks from intelligence agencies and other federal bureaucracies. now, all presidents have to deal with leaks.ea but in this political climate, the press gleefully, gleefully accepts information from anonymous sources and spends a negative against trump. as we pointed out last night, the public and press doesn't know what general michael flynn said to the russian ambassador. we will know but we don't now. also, there are semitruths to allegations that people working on the trump campaign had meaningful contact with thee russia, but we don't know. yet, the press is running wild with the stories and the trump haters are relishing in the witch hunts. >> if there was dialogues and negotiated with the russians, with the russians, which is

clearly against the law, and clearly an act that cannot be, if the president knew what was going on and did not stop it, or in some way authorized it, that can be impeachable. >> bill: [laughs] not against the law for anyone to talk with anyt russians. general flynn had no power being a private citizen, when the call with the russian ambassador to -- took place. in order for him to commit a crime, he would have to formally attempt to undermine the obama administration's russian policy. sharpton is full of it, as always. now, there is a report today that says general flynn may have lied to the fbi. we mentioned that. if it is true, that is a crime.d so we'll see. as "talking points" reported last night, there are two goals here. first, to leak the trump campaign to the russian hackers, who disrupted the clinton campaign. and the second, to try to prove that president-elect trump was undermining president obama on

russian policy back in december. that is what the media goal is, that is what they want. also, as we said last night, if there is truth to those allegations, they should be taken very seriously when the facts are presented. when president trump first mentioned draining the swamp in washington, i don't believe he understood how extensive the problem really is. after eight years of president obama, there are many people working in the government who liked the former president and who despised mr. trump.wo eliminating all of them, stopping the leaks, pretty much be impossible. also, trying to get fairness out of the anti-trump press is impossible as well. so the trump administration has its hands full. that is "the memo." now, reaction. now, joining us from stanford, connecticut, former white housenf press secretary ari fleischer, who worked with president bush the younger. what do you think? >> they are cut from different cloths, bill. george w. bush was a much more gracious insider establishment

person. donald trump is the opposite. in this sense, donald trump is the only person i know who has the moxie to be able to take on the press like this. he is doing in public what a lot of republicans i know talk about in private. trump is actually delivering the smacks to the press that he thinks they deserve. >> bill: they are going to hit back, though. can it get any worse, ari? you are an observer. can it get any worse? >> my attitude about this entire administration is, let it play out. i am very open-minded about what donald trump can accomplish. but when it comes to the swamp, the swamp, as you pointed out,th bill, if this was a "star wars" movie, it would be "the swamp strikes back." for the extraordinarily unpopular. donald trump is not popular but he is far more popular than the swamp. >> bill: they can do things like leaks. that can really damage the president and has already damaged him. it is embarrassing for his

conversations with the mexican president and the australian prime minister to be made public within 24 hours. it looks like he has no control. >> no question. donald trump has a legitimate beef about that. but that is the agencies, that is not the press.ef the press is just publishing -- >> bill: that is what i said. it is a two-pronged swamp. there are creatures of all stripes in the swamp. the press and some intel people are after the president. >> unquestionably. but here is where the press is vulnerable. the press has brought so much of this on themselves, bill. you know, the gallup poll came out in september that said the american peoples trust in the press to tell the news accurately and fairly, which is their job, is at an historical all-time low. >> bill: it should be. >> the press is in really big trouble because only 14% of republicans have faith in the press, only 30% of independents, and only 51% of democrats.s. so to the degree that the pressn becomes increasingly oppositional to donald trump, it reinforces what donald trump and steve bannon are driving, which is that the press is the arm of the democratic party.

before we get to the overall impression, goldberg and i differ. he thinks the president is a bit unhinged.no i do not.tr you say? >> look, there were some moments in there that made me uncomfortable, when donald trump said it would be good politics to blow that russian spy ship out of the water. i am not sure that was a great moment for diplomacy. but no. he wasn't unhinged. i think that this was a determined effort by this president, who is by far the best spokesman in his administration for his administration, to seize the narrative. there is a growing talk here in washington that there is chaos. you know, you have john mccain talking about, there is disarray of the white house. there have been some real problems. it is not all just a narrative. this was a president saying, i am in charge, i know what i'm doing. a i am going to -- i am not going to bend to washington.n. washington is going to have to get used to me. >> bill: he was defiant but in a low-key way.

i haven't seen any hysteria. your submarine analogy, he made that by saying, look, some people would like to see me blow it out of the water, this russian submarine 30 miles off the u.s. coast in international waters. but i'm not going to do that because i want peace.bu then he went into a peace thing. i don't know why that would have made you uncomfortable. that reassured me that he wasn't dr. strangelove.e. >> well, i remember when ronald reagan talked about bombing the soviet union in 5 minutes, as he was doing a radio check -- i just don't think that president should even talk about that. >> bill: you are old school. >> the fact is, overall, i thought that he was in control, it is his style, it is not o barack obama's, and i am sure there are a lot of your viewers out there saying, "thank god." and he seized control of the narrative and said, chaos, heck no. it is running like a well-oiled machine. >> bill: there is a story in "the washington post" that says flynn, general flynn, may have lied to the fbi.

it is always accounts. as you know, the president didn't answer john roberts' direct question about whether he saw the transcript of the phone call. we don't -- haven't got to the bottom of it yet, whether the president, he implied that its national council told him there was nothing wrong in the phone call. that is what the presidentim implied. but the bigger story could be,e, look, if flynn did lie to the fbi, you should have known it, blah, blah, blah, blah. here is the question. he is never going to get a fair shake in most of the national media. he is not. you know it and i know it.t. >> no, but in the end, and this is why i think you could overstate the importance of this news conference. in the end, what we say, honestly, doesn't matter. and you know, the kind of reviews it gets -- >> bill: why doesn't it matter? people say that he is -- >> in the end, it will be resolved. i think too many white houses, and when i covered reagan, i thought this, stop paying

attention to us and do your job. the fact is, if he improves the economy, if he gets tax reform through, if he gets obamacare repealed and an effective replace through, then it is note going to matter. and conversely, if he doesn't get that stuff through and people's lives don't change, then he could have all the positive press in the world and it isn't going to matter. >> bill: here is what i think i you are missing. he has succeeded now in downgrading the press so much, no matter what they say, 50% of the country is not going to believe them. t and he did it. he downgraded the credibility of the national media. so now, even if they say something true, most people are going to believe it. and that is to him. >> but here is, respectfully, bill, where i think you are missing the point, he didn't get in trouble. w we didn't have all this talk about, is this administration in trouble, because of the media. it was because of facts. it is because mike flynn lied to the vice president of the united states.
