in europe and they are not even paying 2% of their gdp on defense. the countries are going to step up and i think with the diplomatic pressure and united states russia is going to see a stronger nato alliance aligned with themselves and at necessary against russia. eric: did you see the rally and did you hear some other presidents comments? let me zero in on one thing. he said there will be safe zones in syria that will be established and he said the gulf states will pay for them. he said we are $22 trillion in the hole and it's about time the old states will pony up and pay. how is he going to be able to do that and how can he accomplish that if at all? >> diplomacy starts with a great team of diplomats to have a cultural awareness and the sensitivity and that arabic word meaning influence. we need people in the middle east to go over and set this up. i think we have got some of the
3:49 pm
right people and the country certainly have the money to do that eric. eric: may have the money but are they going to part with it? the arab allies have forces in the region like more than 2 million soldiers and some of them have but they haven't fully engaged in the fight against isis. it seems to be potentially on the verge of taking mosul at some point and there have been sacrifices that they have not ponied up completely and look at the picture on the left the top russian general and the joint chiefs of staff chairman joseph dunford. they are going to be meeting next week as we understand in azerbaijan. that's pretty significant because that hasn't happened in the last two years or two where the top military heads will meet what do you think about that and any type of new at understanding?
3:50 pm
reporter: anytime a warrior meets with another warrior there's a bond and even though it's an american and a russian i think this this is a good sign. i once remind everybody remember president reagan and secretary gorbachev, they got along well. how we -- the cold war. i think president trump's engagement with president putin is not a bad thing as long as we as a nation in nato continued with two but russia -- pressure on russia. eric: bottom line the investigations of the repeated contact alleged that the top members of the trump campaign alleged to have had recording those phonecalls they denied any wrongdoing. do you think putin will get the message because many people don't see putin backing down. >> he is going to get the message eric and i hope there's a call from the white house to the kremlin that says hey these airshows over our ships are going to stop.
3:51 pm
eventually an order is going to come from the white house down to the navy to do something ab ca demonstration of aircraft capability. i think i will put a whole new perspective on putin and russia. eric: you talk about perspective what about that cruise missile? they have deployed a nuclear-tipped cruise missile medium range. we are told they can hit london and paris. what do we do about that? this is what he said in terms of what the obama administration did not do. he said quote russia initially filed the treaty tested during barack obama's presidency. despite becoming aware of this apparent violation of the obama is did not take any action to merrily sending vladimir putin and letter of concern in 2014. the obama administration was less than corn -- forthcoming.
3:52 pm
we are told as i said it can hit the european capitals and yet it's apparently been deployed. how do we stop it and what can we do? >> general dunford right now, i don't know what the generals talking about the secretary but i'm sure that's going to come up globally there's a new sheriff in town in russia's going to get the idea. putin understands strength and he understands threats and it's time we take off a little bit of the diplomatic plug-in treat rush in a different way. they are going to get the message just like they got the message during the cold war, eric. eric: maybe perhaps that will begin once general dunford sits down with is russia counterpart. thank you very much. always good to see you. arthel: president trump taking his message to the voters this evening at a campaign rally in melbourne, florida. the president firing back at the
3:53 pm
media early on in his speech pledging not to let news outlets get away with spreading what he called quote fake news. >> the dishonest media which has published one false story after another with no sources even though they pretend they have them. they make them up in many cases. they just don't want to report the truth and they have been calling us wrong now for two years. they don't get it but they are starting to get it, i can tell you. arthel: joining me now is editor-in-chief of daily caller. howdy how do your sponsor the claimed that the news media -- make up their sources? >> oppresses been tough on him. both sides are both sides of taking this very personally and i think the idea that he would go out and again make this attack in front of that crowd was an effort to try and convince the american news watching audience that there is
3:54 pm
a huge receptive crowd in that line of attack and it's not just we saw at the end of the week where he was being attacked and assailed by members of the press. it's going to be warmly received. remember donald trump is trusted more than the american news media and i think he took advantage that because he needs to basically reframe the argument that all these attacks on him have i think weather cam a little bit. he went out there to not only recharge himself but to recharge his faith and thousands of people will show up and accept his message. arthel: the president did seem to breathe free charge at the rally and of course presidents are usually in campaign mode on some level or another. would he make a president trump holding a huge campaign rally just about a month into his presidency? >> from a public relations standpoint it's exactly what he needed. granted they are doing the campaign event as an official matter but it's a practical effect is when it comes to governance of not just what he
3:55 pm
does within the west wing. it actually is a public relations campaign and he realizes this is sort of a brand. when you see people lined up around the block you say all writes a pretty good product to donald trump wanted to bring thousands of people and demonstrate that he does have broad support. i think the numbers bear that out and the polling on this is clear. his right track wrong track numbers are higher than president obama's ever were and i think that surprises a lot of people especially the mainstream press. arthel: let me play a spontaneous moment that happened at the rally and we will talk about that. >> do you feel like you need a boost right now? >> i don't think he needs a boost. you know what a boost is when he came off air force one. we the people that's what's going to fire him. that's why he won.
3:56 pm
he loves us. arthel: that was mr. jean hubbard who actually got called on by the president out of the crowd at the rally and he was invited on stage alongside the president. he had positive things to say about the president and the job he is done so far and how is keeping his campaign promise to his supporters. again you had almost 9000 people at that hangar and 75 degrees and 75% humidity out point out. there may -- may be the flipside some people who may question how much time does the presidency have, does the president have on his hands to hold the nearly 45 minute speech of the campaign rally just one month into his presidency that he has items on his agenda that he needs to check off, work to do in other words. >> i think he is explained that.
3:57 pm
this event was different than any campaign event we have seen because he is a track record behind him as record behind them as president of the united states. think about the number of times he saw his speech after the election was over and he constantly recited this is stump speech. right now is talking about policies. the supreme court moving on the keystone pipeline throwing gang members out of the country. item by item he went down and said here's what i'm working on for you but i think that was the whole point of this that he wanted to get out there basically have an unfiltered attempt to explain to the american people that he's busting his tail right now trying to advance his agenda. my sense is that he's probably going to benefit from doing this and not have a negative impact on the campaign. arthel: how do you think it will go over with congress when he goes back to d.c.? seem if that's an essential question. my suspicion is that we have
3:58 pm
seen this week especially as he referred to the press being the enemy of the american people he started to see republican members of congress publicly and privately mumbling that things are out of control. my sense is that every politician respects in you see as a man energy from the american voter and that got to believe there were members of congress who are watching today's rally and thinking to themselves or got to remember it isn't just about donald trump and president of the united states at the fact that he's a delegate for millions of americans who put him there. they definitely are much more -- arthel: when you talk about congress watching what about the people inside of the president's own party watching this very rally that we just witnessed? what do you think they will take away from that? >> ultimately they are going to see this and they are waffling
3:59 pm
my sense is this pushes them into the wind column for donald trump rally's for now. the president for a bunch of reasons one is that "fox news" in a poll showed that 71% of americans think that the person needs to be more careful about what he says. 71% is alive and that includes trump supporter's. what that means is he needs to come out and show credibly that he can be presidential. arthel: did he do that today? >> he played the hits but he listed out what he's done so far in his presidency and that's quite a lot in a months time. i think that was an effective way of saying hey i'm being presidential. arthel: the way we graded in the old days how would you rate the presidents speech? >> you are putting me on the spot. i hate to as the journals give them an a but i do think he deserves it. arthel: we will leave it there.
4:00 pm
vince coglianese editor-in-chief of the daily caller. thank you very much. eric: of point and beach florida florida -- arthel: a star is born. eric: back tomorrow at 12 noon thread here. julie: the president takes his message directed to the people of the campaign rally in florida. i am laura engel in for julie banderas and this is the fox report. quite the spectacle as the president with sup the crowd in melbourne, florida. look at this. they pulled air force one ride to the crowd. we are told some 9000 people turned out to show their support. many of them spent the entire day waiting in line to get the security. when the president got to the podium he repeated his attacks on the media and vowed to keep jobs in america. >> you want low-cost american ener
