the disunity hear the the president so far? >> look, there's always those rumors, particularly around this administration. we heard this on the campaign. the president has assembled the right team at the right time to do what he needs to get done. i wouldn't doubt they are offering opinions, that's why there's a diverse crowd around him. >> national security adviser position's open after lieutenant general michael flynn was asked to leave or he's no longer there. in that position, i would love to see a steve hadley who knows how to work his way around washington. understands what it's like to not get the spotlight. put the president first but also how to get things done. would you like to see someone with more inside washington white house experience there? >> well, it depends who that individual is. to your point, if it's someone they think shares the same foreign policy values as the

president and knows washington, i would agree with you 100%. >> next, and you got a lot of this. there are a lot of republicans that want no part about donald trump and wrote about it and talked about it then he won. some are up for positions, mitt romney didn't get the job, they healed relationship. elliott abrams did not get the position because of stance in the past. there are matters that mattis wrote columns in anti-trump fashion, downing the president should put that behind him and look for the best person and not where they were during his campaign? >> i think it's extremely important that you have someone close to you who is loyal as well as someone who believes in you, with the same foreign policy position, and i do think that the president will take all of those things into consideration. some of those individuals meant what they said, others were saying things for political reasons and the president is

john tester has been there. joe donnelly has been there. do you think that, if you were to talk to donald trump right now would be to reach out to democrats in a way showing support. they need him in districts and states and he needs them. >> heidi heitkamp as well. he wants to work with them but also wants to work on them. he wants to work with them to get legislative agenda passed especially on things that take 60 votes in the senate and wants to work on them politically. he realizes people like joe manchin are in states he won overwhelmingly. north dakota, west virginia, all the other states where these democrats are up. he's got a real chance to take them out, and they know it. >> is chuck schumer on them constantly saying don't think about yourself, think about the party? what do you think he's thinking? >> i think that chuck schumer seeing opening with republicans defecting from the president's agenda.

thursday did not help the president at all. i think his star has not been serving him well. they've got to focus the president, focus agenda, be more precise what they're doing, or he does face losing republicans. we saw john mccain yesterday abroad, criticizing the president on foreign matters, and i think there are some other republican senators who the president is in danger of losing, today's speech was to show them he can draw the crowds. >> that was my point earlier, he's had the show, he's got the power. south carolina and 9,000 of that hangar. and thousands on the outside in a protest and everybody knows how important florida is. what chris is refer to is senator marco rubio and senator john mccain. john mccain has something personal against donald trump, right, matt? >> yeah, and go into foreign land and criticize your own president and say he has

as all people in politics have been frustrated with the media. this does not help him expand from the 39% of american that are approving of his performance right now. if he wants to get that number up, he needs to start acting more presidential and less like a candidate. look, it may have worked when he with had race and a crazy race and opening for him. he now has to govern, and he's not talking to the 39%. he's talking to 52 senators in his own party that are becoming very concerned about the direction of the country. brian: you know, i definitely agree with you in this. i need to -- he'll go out on the campaign trail when he has a tax plan. he'll go on the campaign trail when he has the replacement for obamacare. that will be something you don't have to take out of campaign funds, right, matt? you sell a program like barack obama did with obamacare, he was relentless and donald trump could get the best of both worlds. lots being in front of crowds and have a program. that will be important

evolution, won't it? >> ronald reagan initially busted out of washington, d.c., and away from the bubble around the white house and talked to the american people, and i think barack obama and bill clinton did it effectively and george bush did it. donald trump is going to do it in his own way, chris, the only thing i disagree with chris on, i think political capital is fragile and it's important that donald trump be careful with how he uses it and how the white house is perceived. i agree it's fragile but the other piece of this is these democratic senators in these red states, they are in trouble if they look hostile to the trump agenda which is getting this economy going, repealing obamacare and keeping it together. >> not if his numbers continue to dive as they're diving. >> what numbers, chris? what numbers? >> they're going to get cover from republican senators who are also going to start bucking the president. >> chris, look at these

numbers. look at fox numbers, the president's job approval numbers are very strong. these polls have been strong continuously. i think we ought to -- >> the national polls were within the margin of error, but the media spinned it as if was a blowout. we both know this. brian: rasmussen, which we know is a phone poll and people like to minimize it, including at here at times, was the most accurate in the last election as a predictor. they have him at 55% approval rating so far. once you start governing, you remember that barack obama dropped 41 and 39 once he started governing and bulking up towards the re-election and towards the end. >> right. brian: when a president is around 40% that's not a problem, and one thing about senators. one thing about senators, they want to be in the majority. if they dislike donald trump but feel as though they're not going to fall on the sword and
