good morning, everyone. we have a good show for you this morning. we begin with a fox news alert. a serious one. five people seriously hurt after mardi gras celebration takes a terrifying turn when an accused drunk driver plows through the crowd. >> multiple injuries. abby: police in new orleans say the pickup truck hit two cars before losing control hitting into a group of parade growers. at least 28 people were hurt. the youngest victim just 3 years old. police say the driver was highly intoxicated. he is now in custody. also the white house this morning firing back at the mainstream media over reports the trump administration excluded cnn and "new york times" from a press briefing. press secretary sean spicer setting the record straight on justice with judge jeanine. take a listen. >> there's a pool that is set up by the white house correspondence association that is representation of tv,

more divided than ever. abby: that is a 30 second spot says the truth is hard. take as swipe at the white house. fake news feud between president trump and what he called the failing "new york times." clayton: going right after their audience. abby: their subscription there. clayton: he has certainly had a battle with the press. and now we are getting another extension of that battle. president trump last night taking to twitter and he tweeted this and set the world on fire with this one. he said i will not be attending the white house correspondence association dinner this year. please wish everyone well and have a great evening. that, of course, in april. the white house correspondence dinner is a time-honored tradition where the white house and the press corps and get together. abby: since the 1920s this has been going on. clayton: get up there and make funnel. the president will make fun of the president and comedian

will make fun of the president. he is out, not going. abby: over the years this dinner has turned into something differential. if you have been or even watched it. i'm sure many people in our audience has not watched this dinner. it's very much the elite crowd of the media and hollywood. i mean, president obama was totally in his comfort zone when he went the past few years and he went every single year. not every president has gone. ronald reagan after assassination attempt called in from where he weighs. and president carter and president nixon that left before the dinner even started. this is not the first time we have seen someone taking a step back and saying this is not my crowd and not my scene. pete: this is classic trump. why do i need to hang out with a crowd who is going to bash me. fox news debate and other places cpac last year. he said i'm not going. this is a guy who is comfortable in my own skin. why do i need a night of this. i'm at war with the fake news media. can i snub them. this pretty much relies on the

profile of the president. they need me. i don't need them. abby: i don't need another gala to go to. you have had outlets up to this point that said they are not going to go the new yorker. vanity fair. clayton: going to go but not have the after parties. abby: they spend a lot of money on these extravagant parties. clayton: bloomberg reported they are not going to have their after party to. get up there and be as funny, look. george w. bush in his early days doing it was not kind of on but then in later years was pretty darn funny. president obama was better than the comedians who would show up. his jokes were really, really good. i'm not sure president trump wants to go up and do that look at what he did with that hillary night in new york city at that dinner. that thing fell flat. pete: he had some good lines though. at the end of the day who does this really matter to. how many people in america care about the white house correspondence dinner? i'm going to give a double zero not one but two. this is insider beltway.

they call it the nerd prom. abby: they do. the whos who's who. pete: the swamp personified. abby: you won't see at the white house correspondence dinner. clayton: 8 years or four years depending on the length of his presidency. pete: cpac every year but forget about the white house correspondence dinner. i kind of love it. clayton: another thing following you this morning. watching what was unfolding in atlanta and picking of the dnc chair. we thought it's going to come down to keith ellison, tom perez obama's former labor secretary. we had interesting discussions on the show that the establishment, they wanted tom perez. so who do you think won? tom perez. and here he is talking yesterday afternoon his victory. watch. >> i need to tell you, folks, at the outset, i know that i have more questions than answers.

i told you before this morning that team tom means team. and as a team, we he will work together. some day they're going to study this era in american his have and thehistory and study ie no nothing movements. they will say where were you in 2017 when we had the worst president in the history of the united states? we will all be able to say united democratic party led the resistance, insured that this president was a one-term president. abby: wow. pete: team tom versus president trump. i found out about his win from president trump's twitter feed which he tweeted this and there is tom perez with obama. we will talk more about that relationship as well. president trump took straight to twitter right after this announcement saying congratulations to thomas perez who has just been named chairman of the dnc. i could not be happier for him or for the republican party.

abby: to which tom perez jumped right back with his snarky response call me tom and don't get too happy. democrats united across the country will be your worst nightmare. clayton: it's interesting. because you had donald trump tweeting that out saying we are going to take you on basically. and then you had bernie sanders tweeting yesterday as well. i thought his response was actually just as interesting. because he was calling out sort of the establishment in all of this in a subtle way. he said it's imperative. tom understands that the same old, same old isn't working we must bring in working and young people in a new way. abby: he is right about that because keith ellison was his guy. he is one of the bernie sanders train. attacking people as more leftist movement. clayton: remnants of the obama administration? is this the remnants of hillary clinton? pete: it's the remnants of the establishment. they have further pushed off the reckoning of their party.

it's the biggest story of the day in the fact that democrats chose tom perez. he has been a government lawyer his entire career with the establishment inside the swamp. the energy was behind keith ellison. the progressives want keith ellison. that's where they want the future of the party to go with bernie sanders. they might argue sufficiently rig the vote count washington type insiders to elect tom perez to be the chairman who hillary clinton wanted and barack obama wanted, the consultant class wants. clay delay conspiracy theory may not be as crazy as it sounds. ed klein said during the election cycle he was saying look, watch for the obamas to be in washington. they're going to be there. abby: he predicted all of this. clayton: shadow government. arm in things. we will have him later on the show. abby: so interesting to mention bernie sanders tweet. what gets people to the voting booth is not making sure it's rigged is enthusiasm. getting people excited includes the young people. that's what democrats did not do this go around. they have a real challenge on

republicans for that matter ignoring the very serious issues of veterans benefits. and all of a sudden now we seem to have this political theater in our country where people like elizabeth warren who is our state senator, obviously, in massachusetts. and she has decided that she is going to spend her time on working on things that really, you know, we think she is just trying to run for president. now, we are not trying to be political with this. what we're doing. abby: you need help. you are asking for more help. more on what really matters here, right? >> you are absolutely right. we're here trying to mobilize our fellow veterans to say, you know what? instead of working on illegal activity. instead of finding ways to bring people in who are illegal, how about some of these senators that decided to jump on this type of activity and congressman have decided to jump on this activity. how about you help the people standing in line.

people that are here legally trying to obtain their citizenship and how about you run to the microphones and help the veterans that provided you the opportunity to speak this way. pete: it's such a great point you just oppose the treatment of veterans in facilities with whofer whelming reference to illegals and what we can do on the refugee side it can be very frustrating. why does senator warren specifically put such focus on illegal immigrants and that side as opposed to rolling her sleeves up and say we have vets in massachusetts not being served well who have gone to war and fight for us. why not that emphasis? >> that's what we want to find out, pete. i was in the service also, my war was vietnam. pete: thank you. >> the article that john and i put together was to raise awareness of what's going on. as you well know i know you are a candidate for the veterans administration. there is hundreds of veterans dying every day whether through illness, old age or

suicide. why don't we worry about that first. our grandparents are immigrants. mine are from italy and canada. we are not anti-immigration. my background is law enforcement. i don't want a criminal in my neighborhood. that's what it is all about. abby: that's a great point. i'm glad you made that. here is what senator warren's office is saying about this we have immigrants and children of immigrants who serve with honor in our military. she is doing everything she can to protect the rights. pete: is that a point you are not talking about legal or illegal. >> that's not the point. the point is this. elizabeth warren and people like her seem to have a very hard time understanding the difference between legal and illegal there has been plenty of immigrants served in the united states military and our hats are off to all of them and we love their contribution and service to our country. i find it very hard to believe that elizabeth warren wants to lump all immigrants into the

same category. you know, again, it seems to be the fact that she is more interested in creating political theater than she is for actually helping americans. this is so much a call to action to our fellow vorns so they can understand that we need to speak out. you know what? people need to understand these politicians work for us. we don't work for them. >> yeah. >> it was legal immigrants and the united states citizens that voted for elizabeth warren. illegal immigrants didn't vote for. abby: that's a great point. and so important you are speaking out. two brothers in mind are just beginning their journey in the navy. that's something i couldn't be soism passioned about. >> thank y for having us. pete piatt you got it new dnc chair tom perez says his party is now united and time to move on. is that really the case? michael moore says he is not buying it. does richard fowler agree? he is here live next.

wheels down at jfk was 11:00 last night. clayton: take us behind the scenes. what was the mood like in the room. tom perez an establishment candidate came out of nowhere. labor secretary for president obama. we were hearing rumblings that that's what the obama administration wanted and clintonites wanted and keith ellison was out. what was it like in the room. >> republican party was here right after president obama's win in 2009. they are really trying to figure out what do we do next? what's our next step? we didn't win the presidential election we have to gain back seats in the house. we have to gain back seats in the senate. how do we do it? i think the folks who were part of the dnc decided to elect tom perez. the first thing tom perez did first act as chair was create a deputy chair position and that went to keith ellison. and so i think that's party of it and i think the other thing to be excited about is have you new young talent coming into the party. one of the vice chair seats went to a fellow new yorker michael blake who is a state rep here. they are trying to figure out how do we talk to young people.

how do we engage them and engage millennials as bernie sanders said in tweet last night. pete: where did tom perez come from. we heard about keith ellison. tom perez got in late in the race than others. there is speculation that the obamas and clintons and consultant class, the establishment of the democratic party said we don't's keith ellison. we already rejected bernie sanders. we want to keep the status quo. is there a sense amongst democrats and progressives that that's what they have done here? >> that's a good question and i don't know and here's the thing. i don't think tom perez is not progressive. pete: is he establishment. >> absolutely. is he a labor secretary. richard trumka president of afl-cio said this guy was the greatest labor secretary ever had. he fought for overtime pay. tried to fight for overtime wage. disconnect between hillary camp and bernie camp hopefully keith as a deputy chair and tom as the chair can work together to ridge that gap. it's going to be uphill battle. the democratic party is going

to have to come together to take on donald trump. that is what we know. when you walked out of that meeting last night the sense was we are together no matter what happens and we have got take on donald trump and the republican party. abby: michael moore we don't usually hear from him very much -- no, i'm joking. he tweeted out about this as well well, there you go. i will try to come up with another idea. if we leave it to them, morning of the same. ahead with the #dems. the question i have for you. there seems to be a lot of anger coming from the democratic party. a lot of anger towards president donald trump. have you mentioned this, what they are needing to move forward and win elections as a platted form is a message focused on the economy and people that need it most. how do they do that? >> absolutely. i think,able buy, you are right. one thing i will say that you can point to when you see democrats whether the argument help organize them but democrats are energized. progressives are energized at town halls across the country. don't get me wrong. i have think what we know,

what we do stand for is they are against donald trump. trump.clay. pete: that's not enough though. >> absolutely. i think it's going to take time -- once -- the election just happened a couple months ago. democrats are trying figure out what their quote unquote contract for america is you will start to see them slowly have conversation with the voters at the women's march. with the voters that are going to these town halls all across the country. what is it that you want to hear from your party and leaders. it doesn't matter if it's the democratic party or republican party. we are all shaped by the people, the american people. it's what democratic voters are saying to us will determine what the party does. abby: good to have a healthy debate on both sides of the aisle. >> interesting. pete: appreciate united states it. clayton: who needs to watch the oscars when you are going to hear this. >> policies of the administration really unamerican. he.

i'm excited to see what it's all about and see what this race kind of holds for us. rick: for people that don't watch nascar all that much you don't realize the biggest race of the year is the first race of the year. if you are returning in your rookie season and starting off your first race with the biggest and most important race of the season. is that daunting or intimidating to you at all? >> it is in some ways. everybody is probably putting the most pressure on themselves for this weekend and just everybody wants to win this race. everybody wants to shock and win this race. we only get one shot a year. everybody is trying to be on top of their game. a few ground jewel races we go to. this is the one everybody wants. it does put more pressure on you. at the end of the day you can only do so much. rick: you are 20 years old in your mind do you think i can win this race today? >> absolutely. we saw dresser bain do it. he was 21st, start. daytona is possible. seems like everybody can grab

barack obama 2017, a group of unhappy voters now calling on the former u.s. commander-in-chief to run for president of france. posters now lining the streets as you can see and a petition circling online. the creators of the petition they say it is a joke but it started out a frustration about politicians in france. well, he has been spotted soaking up rays in the virgin islands and going on coffee run in new york. is former president barack obama really retired? clayton: our next guest doesn't think so he think obama has set up a shadow presidency. pete: journalist and author of "guilty as sin" ed klein. >> good to be here this morning. pete: give us the inside scoop two things. start first with the dnc in atlanta last night they elected a chair. what does that say to you about the future of that party? >> i think the big winner last night actually was hillary clinton because if you think about it, if bernie sanders'

guy ellison had won, that would have essentially pushed hillary off to the side. pete: tom perez was hillary's guy. >> tom was hillary's guy. he was also barack obama's guy. but, basically, it' if hillary wants to run which i'm told she does back in 2020. and if bernie sanders' guy, ellison had been in charge of the committee, democratic national committee, she would have had a hard time. pete: pause though you are saying hillary clinton, your sources are telling you this dnc election could help propel a candidate clinton again in 2020? >> here is what hillary has in mind. she is going to write a book for simon and shuster memoirs as you know. she will do paid speeches. i'm also told she is planning a listening tour, just the way she did when she ran for senate. clayton: she had high marks and high approval rating when she was senator of new york and she listened. she went around to all counties.

it seemed like she failed to listen during this election. >> she sure did. pete: failed to connect with voters this time. how old would she be at this point? >> 73, 74. clayton: you really think that's going to happen? >> i think she thinks it's going to happen. do i think it's going to happen? no. pete: last book didn't sell. why would this one sell? >> that and also she is not in good health. she is really the old guard. huge, tremendous desire within the party for new faces, youth. a new start. but she is not giving up. abby: the american people have spoken a few times now about her running. but you said, we were talking in the commercial break this sort of infighting between the establishment and the bernie sanders, you know e more of the left of the democratic party that's still going to continue on at the grassroots local state levels, they could potentially be quite effective really going against hillary clinton. >> that's very true. while we were all concentrating on this democratic national committee

chairmanship meanwhile back in california, hawaii, washington state, the bernie sanders people, the insurgents are starting to take over those particular committees, state committees. and they are working through the united states committee after committee after committee trying to control what really is the democratic party. pete: interesting. so you are saying the dynamic still exists dnc convention that happened in atlanta. a lot of party insiders from each state plus at large delegates kind of super delegates voting to elected tom perez. at the graduate roots level we still see the support of bernie sanders. >> support in the party, basically, the base is in insurgent mood. they are furious. they are angry. they want change. and i think that tom perez is going to have his hands full trying to control this bernie sanders, elizabeth warren leg of the party. it's going to be very, very difficult because they have the energy behind them.

parallels between reagan and president trump. good morning. >> good morning. thanks for having me. clayton: let's talk about the hitler comparison. >> all republicans do effective live who gain power. but with reagan it was almost identical in the sense it was the media doing the same kinds of comparisons as an example though for trump, "the washington post" in march of last year. you don't have to go back to history's most famous exeample adolf hitler to understand a authoritarian rulers can achieve power through the ballot box. have you it through major newspapers, people on the street. the rhetoric on blogs, et cetera. for reagan it was generally the media. the democrat party and liberalism. it is the boy who cried wolf. it's a con strand refrain. remember bush hitler. they renamed bush. so whichever republican president, it's a -- almost hysterical literally hysterical accusation because they know they can't discuss the details of the issues and defeat the conservative ideal in that way.

the only way to really try to get people to turn off to the conservative leadership is to compare them to someone who -- where the accusation is so broad, so dramatic and so frightening that people will retreat. but it's been done so much i think they found it didn't work with trump. it certainly didn't work with reagan either. clayton: let's talk some positives. let's get off hitler on sunday and take parallels between what the two presidents are doing. >> sure. clayton: let's talk about the first 100 days. do you see any similarities between reagan and trump. >> this is the absurdity of the comparison when it comes to obviously a genocidal maniac. for president reagan and just like with president trump, massive positive outlook by the american people, lifting up of the spirits about what was possible. their rhetoric is one about america being able to be great again. and when america is strong, of course, the rest of the world is safer. so these are messages from both reagan and trump about lifting people up economically there was immediate yeat

reaction and immediate beneficiary. of course, for president reagan, we had the problem of the assassination attempt. and, yet, he continued on his work. and for president trump i think what we is have a man equally as focused getting the work done for the american people. clayton: do you see similarities with the congress battling as well. will trump get his tax cuts through. >> right. clayton: will he be able to repeal and replace obamacare? what did face. >> almost identical. media didn't like reagan and trump but also their own bureaucracy. the republican party did not want president reagan in. they wanted george h.w. bush. he was a compromise for the vice president. with donald trump he was fighting the bureaucracy, the media and democrats. these are two in particular men reagan and trump who really represent a complete outside dynamic that threatens the bureaucracy as it knows

victory in the war against bigotry, antisemitism, the anti-israel push of the hard left within the democratic party. look, i wish that perez hadn't appointed ellison to any position in the democratic party. i'm going to stay in the democratic party and work to try to move it toward the center and try to move it away from the hard left and twist toward opposition to israel and toward american values. it's going to be an uphill fight but i'm there to fight that battle. we won this battle. we won the battle when at the convention they tried to put an anti-israel element in the platform. we won that narrowly. so i think we can still fight and win for centrist values. look, the democrats are marginalizing themselves. they have to understand we are not a hard left country. when the democrats nominated mcgovern, when they nominated dukakis when they nominated walter mondale the three of them together didn't get enough electoral votes to win

one election. you think they have learned the lesson they have to move to a the center. i worry the republicans are moving too far right and the democrats are moving too far left it's happening in europe. we have to turn to the vital center and have debates between centrist liberals and centrist conservatives. that's where our country is. abby: i will never forget throughout the campaign we got close to the election i spent some time in scranton, pennsylvania, many democrats in that area. a lot of them told me for the first time in their life they were switching their vote to go republican because they said we are not inspired and this is a place where joe biden's father was born. i think hillary clinton's father was buried there as well it made me realize the democrats are struggling to find that message that does inspire people that live in places like scranton, pennsylvania. what is your answer to that? >> that's where they have to win. they have to win in the center of the country. they do not have to try to attract the jill stinel green party voters. those people, those extremists

will never vote for a liberal democrat because noble will ever be far enough left for them. they have to attract people in middle america. they have to attract people they lost in the last election in minnesota and michigan and pennsylvania. and keith ellison is not going to do that. he will alienate all those people. so it was a smart move on the part of the democratic, quote, establishment to move slightly toward the center. but i'm worried that the pressure that the wing is going to still going to push. pete: what would cause to you leave other than ellison having been elected? >> well, for me ellison was a point principle. i wouldn't move from the democratic party because they were moving slightly to the left. it's his history antisemitism. close connection to farrakhan. he voted against the iron dome. can you imagine any reasonable person voting against a missile system that's designed to protect innocent civilians against terrorist rocket attacks. pete: absolutely. >> that was my principled opposition. it was about him as a person. pete: we have to leave it

this group basically said hey about time she focused on the right kind of thing. abby: here she is. this video is her at the airport protesting immigration and the new laws that are being put forth. just how motivated she is by that and it's interesting when you think about the city of boston. they have the city hall there where obviously a lot goes on with immigration right behind city hall is a veterans' homeless shelter. just contrasting those two. if we can't get it right with our veterans we can't get anything right. that should be our focus no matter. what we had a segment earlier on our show who are helping assist our veterans. they are pushing back on this and from massachusetts i believe. here is what they told us. >> hundreds of veterans are dying every day. whether it's through illness, old age or suicide. why don't we address those problems first. then we will worry about other people coming in to our country. >> elizabeth warren and people like her seem to have a very hard time understanding the

difference between legal and illegal. again, it's t. seems to be the fact that she is more interested in creating political theater than she is for actually helping americans. how about you help the people that are standing in line. >> absolutely. >> people here legally trying to obtain their citizenship. and how about you run to the microphone and help the veterans that provided you the opportunity to speak this way. clayton: taking the bull horn and going to that homeless shelter in boston and bringing the same level awareness. abby: they did say they are not against immigration done the right way. we want to make sure that's clarified at the end of the day this is not a focus and it should be. pete: indeed, clayton, you took the words out of my mouth. that's what veterans want to see. outside v.a. facility with a bull horn. repeat after me, the v.a. doesn't work. the vets should be able to choose. employees should be fired. you never hear that these two veterans from massachusetts speak for a lot of the vets and patriots and military folks who say where has of my country gone and spending all this time at the airport

been paying attention. i think it was pretty unexpected things especially considering the amount of -- it's easy to forget that donald trump -- because donald

trump, i think, says so many things that are so funny. and he sends things out on twitter that can be so funny. at the heart of the matter he is actually very serious about all of this stuff. he really doesn't like the way the press covers politics. a lot of people don't like the way the press covers politics. and, you know, this is a serious issue to him. i think he just didn't want to be sitting there yucking it up with them at this kind of you a ten terrence obnoxious white house correspondence dinner when he has serious issues with so many in the room. abby: i think that's spot on. this is a slap in the face to those saying i'm not going to put up with this anymore. this comes right after friday when you had members of the press left out of some gaggle that sean spicer did places like politico, "l.a. times." you mentioned earlier when you worked for the "new york post." this isn't new. this is something that has happened before. have you been kicked out of an airplane, have you been kicked out of gaggles, tell us about that. >> i remember a column i wrote in 2008 got my me kicked off

of president obama's campaign plane. we would routinely get kicked out of those gaggles in the white house. it was not a big deal. i will tell you, abby, the "new york times" never mounted the ramparts to defend the first amendment when that happened. the only time they care about the first amendment is suddenly when they get oleft out of something like this. really is obnoxious. something else that president obama said i think it was last week that is a very good thing cpac. he said i love the first amendment. i probably use the first amendment probably more than anybody else. there is a real truth to that the first amendment doesn't just apply to the "new york times." it doesn't apply just to politico which you would think it would when you listen to them get all spun up about these things. but, you know, a guy like, you know, the first amendment applies to you and me. it applies to a political figure. and places like the "new york times," they seem to forget that and think it only applies to the "new york times." abby: that's so interesting you went through all that and here there is so much outrage. you wonder where all that outrage was before this.

pete: president trump following through on a promise to rehaul obamacare. plan has been leaked. is this plan better than the original. clayton: one person who has seen it is dr. ezekiel emanuel. fox news contributor. have you seen this leak. let's go through. so key parts of this bill and what you think that the republicans can actually do to improve the bill? here is part one. limiting tax breaks on generous health care plans similar to obamacare, the cadillac tax. eliminate medicate expansion by 2020. penalties for lapses in healthcare coverage. funding for states to establish high-risk pools. of those four do you think they can do any of those? >> wow, first of all, if you take away medicaid expansion you will throw 10 to 12 million americans off insurance.

that is not a good place to start. by the way when you throw americans off insurance, all of us who have insurance, our premiums will go up because those people still are going to get healthcare. they will go to the hospital or the doctor and those costs get shifted over to us. so that's a nonstarter. it's not a good idea and we should certainly not do it. we also have have to be careful about the tax credits that they give people. so far in that bill, the proposed tax credit is pretty small. if you're a 60-year-old making around $35,000, that tax credit of -- is not going to cover health insurance. not even going to come close. you would do much better under obamacare. we need to be much more careful about their proposal and they need to get off some of these ideological ideas. we're going to get rid of medicaid if we're going to go forward. pete: doctor, a lot of people like everybody cans especially liver the obamacare, level of distortion in healthcare did lead to premium increases and

increases in costs. subsidies being one of them. this plan dismantles some of the subsidies and replaces them with tax credits. are there marketed reforms that you think could bring costs down and improve obamacare? >> i think you need a different set of proposals if you want to bring costs down. let's be very clear. how do -- why are premiums going up? premiums are going up because healthcare costs are going up. healthcare costs to brings them down we need to pay doctors and hospitals differently. we need to get drug prices down. those are the main -- the proposals you read didn't go very far in that direction. so, i mean, if we want affordability, which i think everyone, democrat and republican wants, we really have to focus on how we are paying hospitals and doctors and how drug companies are being able to raise their prices unreasonably and come in with hundred thousand dollar drugs that don't do very much. that's got to be the focus. now, i think republicans need

look, the establishment looks like they have their hands in this race and they are going to try to force tom perez in it and got that alert late in the afternoon, who wins? tom perez. abby: no surprise there. pete: you say came out of nowhere and others say hand picked by that establishment because that feud still continues between the establishment wing of the democratic party and the progressive wing represented by keith ellison and bernie sanders. and it wasn't, you know, they are all talking about unity over there. it's not unity. the press releases say unity but the reality is the folks who voted for keith ellison were pretty plaid. they tried to shout down donna brazile we want a party of people not a party of money. abby: you can imagine the bernie sanders people after they lost the election and now losing this again this might fire them up even more. clayton: president trump just tweeted moments ago about this race. here is what he has to say coming right from the twitter stream the president the race for dnc chairman was, of course, totally rigged. bernie's guy like bernie himself never had a chance. clinton demanded perez.

pete: that's exactly right. i asked ed klein about -- earlier on, who do we have richard fowler earlier on who makes up these. the party chairman of each state. vice chairman of every state. committee man and committee woman and some super delegate type voters that are at large picked by the establishment. you get enough of those people together, they will stay with hillary clinton and barack obama and still reject bernie sanders. bernie sanders once again the rigged system. abby: we talked to professor dershowitz who always is pretty thoughtful about these things. he has been a life-long democrat. he actually said if keith ellison won he was going to leave the democratic party. we had him on this morning and said what are you thinking now? he said democrats if they want to win elections again they have got to move to the middle. here's what he said. >> we are a centerrist country. i worry that the republicans are moving too far right in some place. the democrats are moving too far left. it's happening in europe. we have to return to the vital center and have debates between centrist liberals and centrist conservatives.

they do not have to try to attract the jill stein green party voters. those people, those extremists will never vote for a liberal democrat because nobody will ever be far enough left of them. they have to attract people in middle america. they have to attract the people they lost in the last election in minute minnesota and michigan and pennsylvania. and keith ellison is not going to do that. he will alienate all those people. it was a smart move on the part of the democratic, quote, establishment to move slightly toward the center. pete: i think he is right is this a last gasp of the establishment or move toward the centrist level. clayton: we have guest on the show 20 minutes. abby: that's what democrats lost. they did not inspire. they did not have a message on the economy on things that they care about. they have to figure that ow it's going to be a tough job for tom perez. pete: to richard fowler's

clayton: welcome back, everyone. president trump breaking from tradition to decline a dinner date with the press. abby: in a tweet he wrote yesterday says i will not be attenning the white house correspondence association dinner this year. please wish everyone well and have a great evening. pete: is the snub a smart move for the president? here to weigh in the anchor of "fox news sunday" chris wallace. chris, thank you for joining us this morning. got to get your take on this. president trump not attending the white house correspondence dinner. >> look, i don't want to overstate it. it's a dinner and not showing up at the dinner isn't the end of the world for anybody. having said that, it really is a tradition for presidents.

the last time that a president missed a white house correspondence dinner was ronald reagan in 1981 after he had just been shot and it was so important to him that he called in to the dinner and attended every subsequent one after that. tradition goes back to the 1920s. and, you know, while there is a lot of talk about glitz and glamour and holiday stars showing up. the fact is it is for a good cause. it dozen raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for scholarships for aspiring journalists. on a bigger level and, again, i don't want to overstate, the fact is in the course of your time in washington, i have been here quite a while, you know, you need allies. you need people to -- there are a lot of members of congress there. there are a lot of reporters there. the president is going to have to try to get his agenda through. you never know who you are going to need and when you are going to need them. i'm not quite sure i understand the wisdom of

setting up these artificial barriers. clayton: it's interesting. he had a history of doing this, of course. he cancelled or didn't show up to fox debate that you were anchor. and he skipped cpac last year but showed up this year. so he has a history of doing this kind of thing. >> yeah. and as i say, i mean, it's not the end of the world. he is the president. if you are invited to something you can always say no. you know, for a variety of reasons, a lot of different presidents, everybody from ronald reagan to barack obama and a lot further back than that saw it as in their interest to go to these dinners. you just wonder how wise it is not to go to the dinner. abby: right. this comes, of course, after friday when sean spicer had that gaggle and certain people were left out of their cnn, politico, "l.a. times," "new york times." you know, i had charles hurt on last hour, "washington times," and he was telling me that this is not the first time we have seen this happen. he said when i was bureau chief for the "new york post" i was kicked off of president obama's plane. i have been kicked out of gaggles all the time. this is certainly not unprecedented.

yet, there seems to be a lot of focus on this now. a lot of anger about it. what do you make about that? have we seen this before? are we making too much out of this specific time? >> look, i understand that a lot of folks out there are going to look at this and says why does the press, including you, including me, why do we talk about ourselves so much? but we are in the first amendment of the constitution the founding fathers thought there was a reason that we should be there. and i have to say while there certainly have been people put in the dog house during my six years covering ronald reagan, his first press secretary or second press secretary larry speaks wouldn't talk to me and i was working at nbc at the time for about three years because we had a dust-up. so these kind of things ham. having said that i can't think of a time when you had a general briefing, when you had dozens of reporters in there and you singled out a bunch of them and pretty big outlets like politico, like the "new york times," like the "l.a. times" and said you're not allowed in.

you know, it's not unusual to have sort of preferential things where you allow a few people in but to have one for almost everybody and say not you guys that's a little unusual. abby: of course fox news has stood behind the free suppress like we have stood -- >> i want to quickly say that there was a war on fox news back in around 2010 by the obama administration where they tried to keep us out of things and refused to put anybody on "fox news sunday," and our colleagues in the press, the quote, mainstream media stood up and said, look, they are in the pool. if you are going to include us, you have got to include them. we are very grateful for that support at that time. pete: we have a big show today. we only have a limited amount of time. you have core lewandowski and couple of governors, governor of wisconsin scott walker and virginia mcauliff today, big show chris chris yo. >> you bet. clayton: host of "fox news sunday." we appreciate it.

that bernie, right, during the convention came out and said we have got to throw our support behind hillary clinton. what you said is fascinating you said that didn't work. so it's not going to work this time. do you think? >> absolutely it's not going to work. just because he stood up there and said it, you know, didn't make you know, this divide that we're seeing on both the trump side as well as on the republican side as well as the left side is people are sick and tired of the games and the establishment. i am not a socialist. i'm not even a democrat. i'm an independent fiscal. i joined the bernie sanders campaign traveled for six months lost my mother with cancer while i was on this campaign because i believed in a candidate that was against the establishment. so, keith ellison did all of the back bending and playing all the games to get the votes. guess what? nice guys finish last. people are yearning for real leadership that is saying we are over the games. we are moving forward like joshua to the promise land. you are either with us or against us. we have been in the wilderness for 40 plus years.

we don't have that in paris. abby: those are very situations you are talking about. homicide rate here and all of that. and the terrorism that's going on overseas. i have talked to a lot of the my friends who have been over there. it's not just france by the way. big part of that region germany who has opened up their borders. what i have heard back from my friends even family members that have been there they say it looks very different it feels different. you can feel it when you are there. pete: go to london the most popular boy's name in london three times over is mohammed. say what you want about that. change the cultural landscape of the city of london. it just does. demographics are changing things too. not just isis, terrorism and guns when you bring in mass migration. inevitably a culture changes. abby: angela merkel says the biggest challenge we face today is isis and terrorism a few months after she says our borders are open to everybody. this will continue. we have got other headlines to get to starting with u.s. customs saying the son of the late legendary boxer muhammed ali wasn't singed out.

find the person was killed by somebody or harmed somebody usually a minor offense like a traffic citation that's what happened to my son. the guy who killed him was called three months before and he had been deported my son would be alive. so i don't really care what the offense is. if they get caught, they need to be deported immediately. abby: don, this is so close to your heart and we are talking about immigration and what has to be done in this country. you are talking about your darling son who is no longer in your life. what message do you have? because have you personally experienced losing someone that was so close to you because of someone who shouldn't have been here anyway. what message do you have for people as we are trying to figure out how to get immigration right? >> well, my message is that i have rights and my rights were violated. my son has rights. my son is dead because this country for the most part the

democrats and certainly governor maloy just, you know, just made a proclamation basically saying leave these people alone. no. it's the wrong thing to do. protect my rights first. you may be hard-working. you may be a nice person and maybe you save us two cents a pound on tomatoes, but that's not a valid excuse to be allowed in the country illegally. abby: who did you vote for this time and i'm assuming this was probably the issue you were most passionate about. >> well, it was. i will tell you i'm a lifelong -- well, i was a lifelong democrat. i'm not a republican now either. being in california, voting for president doesn't matter. so i didn't vote for either candidate because i -- although i certainly agree with president trump's position on illegal immigration as a liberal, i don't agree with many other positions. i don't know what i would have done if california was a state

in play. i guess i got, you know, i got the easy way out so i voted but i just didn't vote for president this year. abby: do you think so far president trump is getting it right when it comes to immigration and if there is a message you have for him, what is that? >> well, i think he is doing the right thing. my message for him and i did meet with then candidate trump about a month after he announced his candidacy and one of the things that disappointed me and still disappoints me is that you have to educate the american public on what's really happening with illegal immigration. you can't just have cases like this that pop up that are, you know, really heinous and stand out. i mean, right now, there are over 50,000 illegal alien prisoners in california jails. and all you hear is oh they commit less crimes than the native born. well, i don't care whether they do or not. although statistics when you are just talking about illegal aliens, not immigrants show that they do commit more crimes. but it doesn't really matter.

ongoing threat that cannot be ignored and an attack could be eminent. that's frightening. many of the same democrats who boycotted the president's inauguration won't miss out on his first speech in congress, instead, they're planning to bring dreamers, muslim-americans and other people they say have been directly affected by the administration's policies. the president's speech is set for tuesday night and, of course, remember to tune into "fox & friends" on tuesday morning -- well, every morning, that is, but especially on tuesday. we've got an exclusive interview with president trump ahead of that address. that'll be great. and here's something you don't see every day on the golf course, sean stefani stripping down to take this shot, the announcers were impressed with his dedication. [laughter] saying that he's not going to be attending that white house correspondents' association dinner this year, please wish everyone well and have a great evening. of course, this is going to happen in april, it's the event where the president sits there while a comedian makes fun of him, and then the president makes fun of the press.all it te nerd prom, right? it's the press and all the elites, and they tell joke, and everybody laughs, and this year -- it's been many years since a president skipped it. it was ronald reagan who skipped, he was shot right before --

clayton: he had a pretty good excuse. abby: president carter and nixon went, but they left before the binner started. this has been -- before the dinner started. the white house correspondents' dinner has changed, it's really turned into this, like an oscar-type event. a red carpet is rolled out x people always talk about which celebrities are going to be there, it's about the media elite patting themselves on the back. it's a good time, but i don't think this is going to impact anything. as we've been saying, this is certainly not the first event president trump has said i'm not going to. pete: of course not. how many of you set your calendar to the white house correspondents' dinner? none of you. clayton: i have a little -- pete: except for clayton. clayton: will i be invited this year? with a smiley face. pete: it's also different in the way that president trump is being treated, out and occupant lies being told in many cases about his administration,

there's a war between him and the fake news, and why would he want to step into that environment? a lot of it will be hostile. he doesn't have to. he's shown the ability to rise above this stuff, and i think that's what he chose to do here. abby: even members of the press have written articles about it saying it's not what it used to be, this is sort of painful for us. we've been asking you what you think about this, and your comments have been pouring in. we'll share them later on in the show. clayton: and you have a lot to say about this, too, the dnc picking their new chair of the dnc, and tom perez kind of came out of nowhere. in the establishment he was well known. there he is on the left side of your screen, president obama's labor secretary. on the right side of your screen. was the guy who thought from the bernie sanders' side of the party would get it, keith ellison. yesterday afternoon tom perez was selected, he won and beat out keith ellison. he immediately chose keith

ellison to be his deputy to sort of, i don't know, curry favor with the -- abby: unite the party? clayton: but, boy, a lot of people saying this thing was rigged, rigged, rigged. abby: keith ellison was one of the first to get behind bernie sanders, and when he was running for chair he had bernie sanders, elizabeth warren, chuck schumer, so i can't imagine they're thrilled this morning, because this comes right after bernie sanders, you know, lost the primary. they felt in many ways it was rigged. pete: of course they're not okay with it. you said came out of nowhere, others would say the establishment hand picked perez, barack obama, hillary clinton and the machine in washington, but president trump was up early this morning tweeting about this, pointing out the rigged portion of what you mentioned, abby. he said the race was, of course, totally rigged. bernie's guy, like bernie himself, never had a chance. clinton demanded perez. clayton: ed klein was on our show earlier this morning who's got some great sources, and he

believes, you know, he'd been talking about that shadow government that the obamas were going to try to keep in place in washington. he says this is setting hillary clinton up, get this, for a 2020 run for the presidency. listen. >> i think the big winner last night, actually, was hillary clinton. tom was hillary's guy. he was also barack obama's guy. but basically, if hillary wants to run -- which i'm it would she does -- back in 2020 and if bernie sanders' guy, ellison, had been this charge of the democratic national committee, she would have had a hard time. clayton: i'll bet you a bag of doughnuts that hillary clinton doesn't run. pete: i'm on. clayton: that machine will run again. pete: yeah. some on the bear 234eu side -- bernie side call it the moneyed class, and the grassroots are saying you've held onto that too long, this election being more evidence of the fact that the

swamp is powerful. even the democrats can't beat it. abby: yeah. but ed klein said this divide is going to continue on. under the surface, underneath it all you've got bernie sanders' supporters and this movement playing out where they are trying to get their people in as state chairmen all across the country in protest of hillary clinton, so this is certainly not the end of the divide. clayton: earlier i spoke to a bernie sanders' supporter who gave up six months of her life to campaign for him. she lost her mother. this was a really personal battle. she says not only is it rigged, it's worse. >> the red sea was parted yesterday, and the dnc made their choice clear. either you're with us or against it x the dnc decidedded to say we are still with the establishment, big money, and we're going to leaf you on the other side of the sea and wait on you guys to figure it out. even though the people are

saying let's all unite, bernie sanders did the same thing after the convention, and it did not work. i think that the bench was totally a poor bench, to be honest with you, but there's good candidates who are out there that could lead this party, one that i'm very fond of, senator nina turner. unfortunately, because of the games that you need to play in order to whip the vote, it pushes people away from actually running for leadership chairs. so the people are going to have to make their mind up on what they want to do. pete: an interesting point. if keith ellison is the best candidate the progressives can put up, he's a flawed guy, there was a lot of resistance to him as well, the bench is very shallow unless you're -- abby: it's shallow -- pete: it's almost nonexistent. abby: but also, what is their platform? it's one thing to not have candidates that can help you win elections, but if you have no message, if you don't have something that resonates with the voters out there, that is the real problem the dem that thes continue to -- democrats continue to face. if you're tom perez, you've got

to get people enthused again. clayton: what she would say is the establishment has ruined this party, has ruined this country, and that's what her argument is. and yet they're having to try to unite with people like tom perez who is part of the problem. pete: we're not socialists maybe, but that's what bernie sanders is, a socialist. social justice, economic justice, environmental justice, racial justice, what does that actually mean? how does that translate to voters in pennsylvania, wisconsin, elsewhere? it's not clear, they don't know, and that fracture's just beginning. if you're a democrat, you're waking up today saying we thought we were going to move op, i think they've just delayed it further. abby: see how this plays out. pete: yeah. going to be interesting. up next, we just told you prurch is skipping the white house correspondents' dinner, you we're getting reaction to his decision straight from the white house. special assistant to the president, boris epstein, joins us live next. clayton: and we'll tell you what "the new york times" plans to do

>> bottom line, the decision is always the president's, and he was elected to work for the american people, to speak directly to the american people and not to hobnob with the liberal media. clayton: so was that the decision here? he's saying everyone have a great night, but is this a shot across the bow here? >> not at all. it's not a shot at all. this event originally was put together as a way to provide scholarships to young journalists. unfortunately, it's lost its way in a lot of ways with. but the president is so focused on making sure americans are safe, secure and employed, that's what he'll be doing instead of going to this event. abby: democratsed had their race for chair of the dnc yesterday, tom perez was the winner. obviously, you've seen that tweet exchange between him and president trump. has perez reached out to the president at all other than twitter? >> the democrats just cannot learn their lesson. they just lost the election, and they elect somebody who's so far

to the left as their chairman, it's really sad for them but, you know what? it's good for the republican party and good for this president. pete: as the president pointed out over twitter, he felt like this dnc convention was rigged, as happened during the primaries, you have a sense that perez was hand picked and specifically the clintons and obamas to maintain their grip on power. we had ed klein speculating hillary clinton is going anywhere. do you have a sense this is keeping the ball in the hands of the clinton folks? >> well, the democrats have no bench, no people to step up and lead the party. that's why you have the clintons still playing such a huge role and their disciples like tom perez. and, of course, we all know what happened during the democrat primary. it was absolutely rigged. hillary clinton was receiving questions to debates this advance. we all know that happened, so there's every reason to think that the clinton machine is still taking full grip over the democrat party. clayton: boris, i want to get your take on something john boehner had to say this past week. it seemed like he was, not

unhinged -- abby: he was just being his normal self. pete: unfettered. >> that's a good word. clayton: he was able to talking openly about the battle for obamacare, and he said, look, for as long as i've been in washington, republicans have never agreed on any health care plan together, we've never been united on it, and he said i want to say this president is not going to be able to repeal and replace obamacare, if anything, it's going to be altered or tweaked, but not repealed and replaced. what is the white house saying to that? >> with all due respect to speaker boehner, there's another thing that's never happened in washington. you've never had a leader as strong as donald j. trump, and president trump will make sure we do repeal and replace obamacare. obamacare is a disaster. the opposite of what president obama promised. so we will get this done under the leadership of president trump. abby: you know the two need each other. president trump needs republicans in congress, it's a unique opportunity where they're

in charge of both the house and senate. there have been a lot of promises made, tax reform, infrastructure, and so on, and a lot of people are waiting for that to happen. do republicans in congress, to they need to do more, does the president need to put more pressure on them? ultimately, the way he will be judged in four years will be on results, on what they can get done. >> we've been working very closely with the republicans in congress and across the aisle. the presidents has been absolutely open to work with democrats who are not trying to be obstructionist. he's working across the aisle, working with republicans in the house and the senate to achieve those promises from the campaign. he's already had over 25 presidential actionsings. the first five weeks of pace were extremely productive, and you'll hear a lot of that from the joint address, from the address to the joint session on tuesday. optimistic and realistic. pete: you mentioned that, and there's been speculation of timelines. i know you can't get ahead of

the president, but codo you feel like we'll get a road map, timing and specific pieces of legislation and when from the president on tuesday? >> well, your going to hear the priorities of this president. and the priorities are as we've well know, he's been outspoken about them. it's national security, the economy, repealing and replacing obamacare, reforming the tax code in a way that has not been done since ronald reagan. all these things have been discussed and get done. abby: "fox & friends" is sitting down with president trump tomorrow to be aired on tuesday morning. stay tuned for that. boris, great to have you here. >> have a great day. abby: elizabeth warren voicing her support for immigrants, but now some of our veterans are asking when will the senator have their back? clayton: and former democratic presidential candidate martin o'malley is here to react to the new dnc chair election. next. ♪

anyway, it's been justs a few months since their crushing november loss, and democrats choosing yet another establishment candidate to lead the dnc. >> we will all be able to say the united democratic party led the resistance, insured that this president was a one-term president and elected democrats across this country! finish. abby: so that's president obama's former labor secretary, tom perez, edging a narrow win over controversial congressman keith ellison, but is the party really united like he claims? hear to weigh in, former democratic presidential candidate and, governor martin o'malley. >> thank you. good to be with you. abby: president trump already up tweeting about in this, he says the race was, of course, totally rigged. bernie's guy, like bernie himself, never had a chance. clinton demanded perez. and he's not the only one. there are a lot of people saying this was rigged. claireton was -- clayton was saying, we were talking about this yesterday, we got that

alert on our phone, and a lot of people were not surprised at what ultimately happened? what about you? >> i was supporting the judge of of -- and mayor of south bend, indiana. i was heartened to see tom perez and keith ellison coming together at the end of what many thought would be a divisive race turned out to be actually a unifying race. but the real reform of the democratic party isn't going to happen out of washington with. it's happening in places like that swing district in delaware yesterday that stephanie hanson won by 16 points, that democrats only won by 2 points a few years before. so this is the groundswell that's really reforming our party, not what happens at the dnc meeting. clayton: governor, you talk about unity,, i'm sorry, i just don't buy the idea that the party is unified. we had a woman who had given six months of her life campaigning for bernie sanders, she lost her mom to cancer during that.

she says this not only was rigged, it's far or worse. i want you to listen and get your response. >> you know, what the media saying about everyone just wants to have unity, you know, the rodney king line is not going to work because the american people are sick and tired of the beatdown. you know, i'll go to moses. the red sea was parted on yesterday, and the dnc made their choice clear. clayton: unity there? she says the american people, the democratic base, they're sick and tired of the establishment, governor. >> oh, i think what they're actually sick and tired of is this administration, the trump administration after just 30 days. i mean, there were many people across the country that thought, wow, i wonder what it would be like to actually have our government run like a business. well, now they're seeing that the business that donald trump is about is establishing an authoritarian regime. all of the talk about where is the, where is the infrastructure plan? where's the plan to make wages go up? i mean, look at the guy that he

put in charge of commerce, the king of bankruptcies. look at the person he put goldman sachs in charge of regulating wall street. so you're seeing across the country at these town halls, at the energy that's facing congress people of both parties that the people of the united states are rising up in reaction to the beginnings of an authoritarian regime. round up the immigrants, scapegoat9, tell the press. who -- no president in history ever told "the new york times" they wouldn't -- pete: correction, it's the failing new york times. we know you guys don't like donald trump, that's clear. nasty words, and the party unified in their -- >> i've never used hitler. i always use the word fascist. no, i use fascist. [laughter] pete: the actual question, you said i wonder what it would be. the question we asked i wonder what it would be like if democrats had a platform that people understood. we hear about racial justice and

social justice and environmental justice. what do those words mean to people who realize we're not defeating isis or see illegal immigrants cross the border? the democrats are just out of touch here. >> oh, look, clearly the candidate that we nominated to lead our party did not have the credibility to deliver the message that our country is creating jobs, but we now have to make wages go up. and to your point about immigration, i mean, everything about donald trump's little illusions of immigrants destroying our way of life, i mean, net immigration from mexico last year was zero, meaning more people left here for mexico than came here from mexico. everything about donald trump's economic policies are a lie. you're not going to make wages go up -- pete: but, governor, you mentioned -- clayton: your response to my question just a few moments ago was about this administration, and you heard from tess saying this party is not unified

because we are sick and tired of the democratic establishment. she didn't mention donald trump at all when she was talking. and this idea that donald trump is the problem, this resistance, is that going to be the democratic party platform going forward, resist and persist? we heard that from hillary clinton yesterday. >> look, i think one of the things i just a said to you was that our candidate did not have the credibility to deliver the message be that -- pete: what was the message though? what was the message? what is the message? >> the message is that we need to restore common sense wage and labor policies that actually allow people who work hard to get ahead. we need to invest in our country and her ability to create greater opportunities for our kids like affordable college, like the new jobs of this new era. we need to acknowledge science, and we need to harness climate change to create jobs, not deny it. and we need not scapegoat the latest generation of arriving new american immigrants. look, the bottom line is we are a party that's about opportunity and justice for all, and i wish

that, you know, i know a lot of people have said, well, trump shouldn't refer to the american media as the enemy. well, you know, true. but also the american media need to not treat this administration as though they are the enemy. a lot of people don't seem to have realized that november 8th happened for a reason, and interestingly enough, the reason that it happened was the very thing that our brethren across the political aisle keep doubling down on. the media has engaged in a bit of malpractice, and they do like this access. they do like it. i always think it's interesting, i kind of joke and say the white house correspondents' dinner is like the oscars' red carpet for the people who really aren't qualified or good enough to act, so they go to the red carpet for the -- abby: and they get all the attention they're been waiting for. [laughter] >> they loved it when it was obama, but now they're all angry, and everyone still has, i guess, is bitter over november 8th, so i don't really blame him because of the way the press has been behaving. there's one thing to hold someone accountable, and there's

one thing to spread propaganda. clayton: let's get your take on something unfolding in massachusetts. elizabeth warren was at the airport with the bull horn talking about the immigration ban and the refugee ban from the white house. she was very vocal about it, and then you heard, hearing this morning from some veterans who we had on our show earlier this morning and wishing that she would do the same thing for our veterans in massachusetts that she's doing for immigration outrage. take a listen to them from earlier. >> there's hundreds of veterans dying every day whether it's through illness, old anal or suicide. old age ored is. why don't we address those problems first, then we'll worry about other people coming into our country. >> elizabeth warren and people like her seem to have a hard time understanding the difference between legal and illegal. you know, again, it seems to be the fact that she's more interested in creating political theater than she is for actually helping americans. how about you help the people that are standing in line, people that are here legally

trying to obtain their citizenship, and how about you run to the microphones and help the veterans that provided you the opportunity to speak this way? pete: dana, where's the microphones and the bull horns for the vets instead of the illegal immigrants? >> exactly. exactly. they hit the nail on the head with this. and it's true, there is a purposeful conflation by those on the left, illegal and legal immigration. obviously, we love legal immigration. we just think that there's a process through which you should enter the country, and it's not unlike any other country that is out there. there are countries that have far more strict regulations where with it concerns immigrating into their country. but for some reason the united states isn't afforded the courtesy of our own sovereignty. which is unfortunate. but, no, there's a true difference. it's illegal immigration that is the problem. we should be able to track those entering our country for the safety of our citizens, and that's the top priority of our government. as far as these veterans, it's heartbreaking when we consider all -- just everything is still happening.

there's, no one was fired at the v.a., people received bonuses even, and here their problem is swept under the rug, and the consideration and priority is given to people who are not citizens and don't have enough respect for the country to enter legally. and that's -- and it breaks the heart. i wish elizabeth warren would use her influence as a senator to help these veterans as much as she is out this doing this for illegal immigration. abby: yeah, it was a really powerful segment this morning. i want to hear your thoughts as well, tuesday we're going to hear from president trump, giving a speech to congress, his version of the state of the union, also a chance to speak to the american people talking about the promises he has made on the campaign trail, the ones that he's working on and needs congress in order to get a lot of this stuff done. what do you personal hi hope to hear from him? we're hearing it's going to be a lot on the economy, but what are you hoping to hear? >> right. well, it is going to be a lot on the economy, and that's something he's absolutely going to have to do. i know the budget reform tack cuts, people are hoping to hear more about obamacare which

really affected the economy. i, for one, obviously, i would love to hear something about ongressl reciprocity which i are making strides towards, so that's encouraging. i have a fancy football list, a list of things that i would love to see him hit. but, you know, i'm encouraged because, you know, the primary was very bitter, the general election was bitter between republicans and democrats. i don't really think that there's anybody who can look at the first month of this administration and say, you know what? that really isn't, that's not part of the conservative package, or this isn't any, the things that he is passing and the policies suggested and the people he is nominating to these positions, this isn't what you would hear in the hallways of cpac. it absolutely is. and so i think people in america have every reason to be encouraged. he's gotten a lot done. i keep joking that he's trying to get all his four years of presidency in one week the. [laughter] clayton: the academy awards are tonight, and i'm sure you're

having a big oscar party at your house. [laughter] >> i'm a girl and i i like the dresses, but i'm having no watch party. clayton: you'll be avoiding some of the political speeches i'm sure we're bound to hear tonight. do you think we're going to hear a lot of president trump bashing or soft on politics tonight? what's your snake. >> no. oh, my goodness, no. we're going to hear trump bark, it's the cool thing to do. they were silent about it for eight years. they talk about the freedom of the press, and they ignored the way the obama administration persecuted the press, persecuted people like james rosen, the associated press, the way they went after the press when anyone would ask a single question about fast and furious, the way they tried to blame that on innocent, law-abiding americans like michael bloomberg did. of course they're going the make it political. it's a box you have to check, it's a requirement. in order to be successful in hollywood, well, will you speak out against president trump? conflate heel and illegal immigration? and because of that last one particularly with the executive

order that he rolled out, i know we're going to hear a lot about that -- pete: dana, i know you love the courage of the left, speaking to the left from the podium, right? [laughter] >> yeah. they're out there preaching to the choir which is -- you know what was brave to do? be i'll tell you what was brave to do at the grammyss, what was that singer's name? she walked out there with this dress, and i don't care where anybody stands on the president, it's brave to walk into a room of people you know hate what you believe in, hate the dress, and you still walk in there with attitude and a smile. that's brave. pete: this you go. abby: at a young age. you can just watch the red carpet and see the dresses, then you can turn it off. >> right, exactly. pete: the president vowing to fix the tax system, but when can americans expect more money? abby: now an exclusive interview with maria bartiromo, new treasury secretary steve mnuchin explains exactly what this means for your wallet. >> on the personal side, it's really about tax simplification, fewer tax brackets, simpler taxes and creating a middle income tax cut. maria: people will be able to keep more of their own money. >> not only will they be able to keep more of their own money, but we expect companies will bring back trillions of dollars

that are sitting offshore and redeploy those in the united states. abby: here with more from her exclusive sit-down, maria bartiromo, the only person who will have him on today, and it's the topic everyone's wanting to know be, taxes. more more it's true -- maria: it's true. we are seeing some real fundamental change when it comes to taxes x that's what they're working on right now. now, initially a lot of people thought certainly based on the market reaction that we would see tax reform number one. in fact, the repeal and replace of obamacare has been the number one priority, but secretary mnuchin was very clear. this is not number one, number two. they're both equally important, and he's expecting to have a tax reform package out by august, and he thinks it's going to have a much bigger impact on 2018 versus 017, but it is going to have a big impact. clayton: what are they going to do with revenue when you slash taxes this severely? what is their answer? maria: that's right.

and when you're faced with a $20 trillion debt load, people are wondering if you actually can lower taxes that much and not have something in place to pay for it. that's where this idea of a border tax has come up, whereas you will charge some type of a tax at the border for companies getting imports into this country, no tax for exporters -- abby: are you worried about that though? couldn't that have sort of a backlash effect on how other countries respond to that? maria: yeah. they're worried about retaliation, certainly. but now the conversation has shifted from a border tax to something like a reciprocal tax where if china charges us 70%, maybe we'll charge them 70%, something like that. the bottom line is the conversation has shifted to tax cuts only to now tax cuts combined with system kind of a revenue raise. pete: fundamental tax reform hasn't happened since ronald reagan. is that the biggest impediment or anything else that could stop it in its tracks? maria: i think the biggest impediment is how to pay for it.

tax reform will go a long way in terms of moving the economic story in terms of growth. that's what's really been the highlight of this administration, their focus on economic growth. you know we haven't seen -- we've seen under 3% growth for the last decade, to that will be a big deal. clayton: it's anemic, but your show is not. you've finished fourth twice? >> yeah, that's what i was telling you, it sounds like it sucks, but if you're in that top five, top ten coming off the last lap, anything can happen. as we've seen even as far as, you know, yesterday in that race. >> reporter: yeah. you have a new team this year, so you're feeling like your chances are better, are you feeling good with the new team? >> oh, absolutely. stuart hoff racing, they lost two of the last five championships. lining up with all of the teammates, danica, it's going to be a big deal all season long, but especially today. teamwork goes a long way in this race. you've got to figure out how you work, you know in sometimes your car will work better in the lead, sometimes it works better pushing, you know?

it doesn't really matter as long as you're working together, then you get down to the end and get yours in that position, then you can go and try to inwith. >> reporter: real quick, this year's a little bit different, there's sections in the race. inthe ted of it just being 200 laps, you get points along the way. >> yeah. we saw that ring pretty loud yesterday with elliott, won both stages and got crashed out at the end, but he made up, you know, it wasn't a total loss of a day. he established himself as we get into the playoff season at the end of the year. but this is the daytona 500, i'm not worried about a stage win, i'm worried at a about that big trophy. >> reporter: best of luck. >> thanks for having us. >> reporter: all right. more "fox & friends" coming up. stay with us. thanks so much. have a good one.
