guessing the white house is not too concern about those saying they're not going to be there. >> probably not, leland. i think that is safe to say. you know as president trump prepares for his first big speech to congress, lawmakers on both sides of the isle are saying that they want to hear a lot less about all of those attack that is we have been hearing on the press and a lot more substance, more detailed policy proposals specially when it comes to health care and tax reform. on tuesday night lawmakers say that they want to hear how president trump plans to repeal obamacare and what he wants to replace it with, they want to know what exactly tax reform plan is and how he intends to pay for it. those are the two big issues that, i think, lawmakers are going to be wanting to hear president trump speak about and those are two issues that impact almost every american but right now the story sucking most of the oxygen out of the room is the announcement that president trump will not attend the white house correspondence dinner, the administration's position is why should he attend when he's repeatedly called many people by

many people enemy. >> i think it's kind of naive to think that we can all walk into a room for a couple of hours and pretend that some of that tension isn't there. you know, one of the things we say in the south if a girl scout egged your house would you buy cookies from her, this is a pretty similar scenario. now, in addition to the media president trump is also attacking democrats for electing tom pérez the former labor secretary in the obama administration as the new leader of the democratic party. earlier this morning president trump tweeted out the race for dnc chairman was, of course, totally rigged, bernie's guy like bernie himself never had a chance, clinton demanded pérez. so we may be about to be entering president trump's sixth full week in the white house but tweets like that, tweet where is he's talking about bernie sanders and hillary clinton it sure sounds like he's campaign to go get here, leland.

♪ ♪ leland: congress heads back to work tomorrow, but as we've been reporting for a week or so, lawmakers have not gotten a break from their constituents at town hall meetings. >> everyone in this room has been hurt or helped -- >> i have only been helped. obamacare saved my life, senator. >> nobody here, nobody, nobody here has not been affected by obamacare. leland: that was tom cotton, senator from arkansas. some lawmakers, both democrats and republicans, have skipped their town hall events, drawing even more criticism. others have gone and then charged that the angry voices were just paid protesters. joining us now, hillary shields of indivisible kansas city, a group organizing to, i guess it's fair to say, express your displeasure with president trump. is that fair?

>> well, i think that we're a group, we're really organizing to try and help constituents make their voices heard with their members of congress. it's not about president trump, it's about telling our stories to the people that represent us in washington. leland: represent you in washington -- >> i am not a paid protester. i have -- leland: what do you mean by you say you're not a paid protester? who funds indivisible kansas city? >> no one. i pay for copies to out of my own pocket to. i have lived in missouri since i was 7 years old. i love this state, i love my country, i believe in our democracy, and i just don't think that our representatives can be our voice in congress if they're not listening to us. so whether you agree with my positions or not, that's okay, but i think that my members of congress whether it's a democrat like claire mccaskill or a republican like roy blunt, they need to meet with their constituents and listen to what they have to say. leland: i want to get to each of

those individual senators in a minute, because both of them have interesting stories in terms of why they are not there and want to hear your opinion, but i want to get to this issue of who indivisible kansas city is, and it says you're nonpartisan, issues-focusedded, grassroots, just concerned constituents. but then if you look at the image that you guys have, this is indivisible we stand, it says indivisible, a practical guide for resisting the trump agenda. so how is that not anti-trump? how is that not partisan? >> sure. so i see us as being progressive, but not partisan. i'm taking my message to claire mccaskill and roy blunt, both a democrat and republican. now, we take our inspiration from the indivisible guide which gives you a blueprint of how your members of congress think and how to take your message to them. but for me, this isn't about party. this is about letting constituents speak with their members of congress. we have a representative

democracy, and that only works if our representatives are engaging with their constituents. leland: all right. you say you're nonpartisan, you say you've gone after both claire mccaskill and roy blunt, the senators from missouri -- >> well, i disagree with you saying we're going after them -- leland: well, your twitter feed's going after them. >> i'm sorry, what? leland: your twitter feed's going after them when you create the hashtag where's roy and another hashtag of resuggestioning trump tuesdays. i think that would be fair to say you're going after people, wouldn't you? >> i think saying where is roy is saying where is this senator who represents all missourians? why isn't he having public town hall meetings during recess week, which we call it recess week, but really it's home district workweek. this is the week that they have off from d.c. so they can be in their home states. leland: all right. so just so we can try to move along here, roy blunt we found out was overseas on a trip.

he sent us a statement here from his office. they said the group, referring to you all, knew ahead of time that he would not be in kansas city on the day and that they had people in springfield be yesterday. i guess you guys sent protesters down there. the dates of the gop lincoln days has been noted for months. he was at a gop lincoln days event, how is that not interacting with his constituents? >> so i think that it needs to be public, open forum that's open to all of his constituents, not just a partisan event. and i don't fault him for not coming to my town hall that i had yesterday. i fault him for not having a single open public town hall during this entire week. i understand that -- leland: hold on. do you fault claire mccaskill for not having a single open town hall as well, and if so, why didn't you do a hashtag of where's claire? >> well, claire mccaskill sent a representative to our event.

previous confrontations with the u.s. it's the first major exercise si president trump. inauguration of president trump. ing fox news correspondent conor powell is live in jerusalem with more. hi, conor. >> reporter: hi, elizabeth. well, iran's navy conducts these military exercises annually, so it's a fairly common event, but it is the first time that iran's navy is conducting these exercises since president trump took office vowing to get tough on tehran. and since his administration has declared that iran is on notice after it fired a ballistic missile recently. iranian state tv said these drills near the strategic strait of hormuz are being carried out to improve the readiness against terrorism and piracy. the drills include iranian naval ships and helicopters and will take place across some two million square kilometers. now, nearly a third of all oil traded at sea passes through the strait of hormuz, it's a really strategic spot, but it's also the scene where the u.s. navy

red, and then we have another full screen of gop representatives, and then we have gop state legislature. and you can just see really the majority that we're seeing across the united states. so i want to ask you as we reflect on the weekend, what do democrats face as we approach the 2018 midterms? >> i must tell you, that screen -- even though i can't see it, i know that, i've seen it before, and it's a lot of work, a lot, a lot of work if i may say so. listen, what tom perez and the democrats have to do, they've got to get unified, together. the sanders' democrats have got to play nice in the sand box and power share with tom perez which is why keith ellison was named deputy chair of the dnc. secondly, they've got to get on the ground and energize their base and go after those trump voters who are democratic voters who have grown tired of the democrats and believe that the economy has left them behind.

if they do those things, on that map 14 of 35 governorships are up in 2018. those 14 open seats are what the democrats have to target. after that in 2020, they've got to go after the senate and the house, any open seats there, but they've got to have a progressive economic message that talks to white working class, former dems as opposed to at them. elizabeth: okay. >> because when the dems talk to that white working class, they don't believe in that message. elizabeth: okay. when we pop up that governors' race screen, and people may ask at home why are we talking about gubernatorial races. they are very important because governors make huge decisions. we're talking about districting, and so when we talk about governors' races, they are incredibly important. jose, i want to bring you in here because it's not that republicans should be resting on their laurels just because we're seeing all this red and the pink in the map that we pond up. >> well, and you're absolutely right. the democrats really are in their weakest position in about

100 years, and the map shows one tale not only of the governorships, but also of the house and the senate and the opportunities that we have coming up as soon as 2018. but i think all you need to know about the democratic party today is the fact that they elected tom perez as the chairman yesterday. he is, i've met him, he's a nice guy, but the fact of the matter is that he was the most liberal member of the obama administration, he is clinton and obama 2.0. i must say that as a mexican-american and as someone born in mexico, i'm always thrilled when there is a hispanic who is, who is elected to a leadership position here in the american body politic, but he is absolutely no match to our new, my friend and our new rnc chairman boss, chairwoman rhonda mcdaniel, who we elected unanimously the day before the inaugural and who's off to a great start particularly on the fundraising side where we've had

the best postelection month ever. elizabeth: scott, i want you to respond to two things, some of the points that jose made about perez, but also the fact that democrats made a move where they said they would be allowing corporate donations now. that was something president obama was vehemently against. i want you to respond to both of those things. >> well, i'm not surprise9ed at that -- surprised at that. the party has a lot of work to do, and it needs to start accepting contributions to anyone to raise -- from anyone to raise money to fund the groundwork that they have to do. the republicans accept corporate money -- elizabeth: yeah, but the republicans, that's what they're against, isn't it? that's what their platforms are against, those big donors. >> well, barack obama was against those big donors and the lobbyists. the dnc is rebuilding, if you will, and while they have not owned the door to have lobbyist donations at every level, they've opened the door significantly or in a less limitedded manner simply because

funneling back in especially along the northeast, the eastern half of the country. temperatures are falling back down, 39 in cleveland, 41 currently in new york. what does that mean from yesterday? yesterday we saw a lot of warm air, so this is a 24-hour temperature change, and a lot of folks dropped a solid 20 degrees just in the last day or so. close to it in new york, 25 degrees getting that direction up into the boston area, the same is the case in washington d.c. now, with the cooler air a little bit of moisture in the northeast, we're tracking some very light snow showers, i'm not talking about a big snow, it's all coming off the great lakes. that'll continue throughout the rest of this afternoon. not big snow, and i doubt it's going to make it to any of our major metropolitan areas. things are looking mostly dry, but i want to point out what's happening in the pacific northwest. this is an area we're going to be paying attention to, some rain and more snow on the way for those folks. leland? leland: so long as it doesn't hit california. thanks, adam. >> reporter: yep. elizabeth: coming up after the

this sculpture was based off the iconic leg lamp from the movie, and it is turning heads in, well, this would only happen in one state in the union, florida. lakeland, florida, of all places. opinions about the leggy work of art have been mixed from praise to raised eyebrows or just poor taste. either way. elizabeth: love me some sunshine state. the american-born panda and local washington celebrity bao bao is settling into her new life in china. after bidding a bittersweet good-bye to the national, she arrived to a new enclosure. she'll make her public debut after getting used to her surroundings, but by the looks of it, she seems fair my comfortable. leland: yeah, after a long flight, i think she got a flatbed on fedex. she's going to be in quarantine for a month while they teach her chinese which, dare i say, smarter than the average pan a da.
