"the washington times," charlie hurt is on the sofa and he is outnumbered. >> charlie: i disagree with a lot of people. i don't think the inaugural speech was particularly dark. i think he is given a lot of good speeches, but that was definitely his best one. >> sandra: judge, good to have you here. the >> jeanine: thank you. i was really overwhelmed. when will he be presidential? when will it happen? this man was so presidential, so focused, so clear, so concise, and he never really came off of -- >> sandra: many are calling a pivotal moment for the commander-in-chief. it president trump, again and again, heading optimism and hop hope. by many accounts, the president delivered. watch. >> president trump: each american generation passes the

tonight to cease this moment, believe in yourselves, believe in your future, and believe once more in america. thank you. god bless you, and god bless the united states. a [applause] a >> sandra: in the meantime, opinion appears divided on whether we are seeing a new president trump. >> this speech really didn't reset something and there was an article this moaning that's a donald trump now has a chance to reset his presidency, which i thought was a little premature, given it has only been 36 days or something he's been in office, but i think he had done that. >> president trump had a good night, but i agree with others on the panel. i think it's too soon to say that we are and donald trump 2.0. tomorrow when he wakes up, when there's a present story that he doesn't like, when he gets some pushback from republicans on something, we will see.

>> sandra: judge, i'm going back to you, because you clearly are showing her excitement over this speech. what is the reset for the president? >> jeanine: i think for those people who don't understand who donald trump is, they now know that the president of the united states, by starting with recognizing the end of black history month, recognizing that the destruction of the jewish cemeteries is not going to be tolerated, now is, hopefully, he is trying to convince people that he is fair, he is rational, and he is just. it's the tone that i think made the difference. there is not that much in the speech itself that changed what he has been saying for the last year or year and a half, other than the immigration issue, which i think we will get to. the tone in the presentation, it was presidential. >> sandra: some were comparing

it to his inauguration speech, joe trippi said why couldn't and have been his inauguration speech? >> charlie: i think the inauguration speech was a tough speech, because it was his first speech to washington where he said it look at, what i said on the campaign trail, i meant, and i'm going to keep all these promises. that was a very important thing to do, but also, that speech last night, there is a lot of toughness in it. one of my fame favorite lines, it's on not my job to present e world. what a change that is from republicans who believe in remaking the world and president obama who in 2009, said, he went to egypt and it said one of my jobs as president is to correct the am wherever they appear. this is a totally different. >> sandra: you wonder if he won over a few more people who are skeptical of the president. some were asking a question about how president trump's speech made you feel about the direction of the country.

at 69% said they made them feel more optimistic. at 28%, more pessimistic. megan, you have not always supported donald trump for the campaign process. you did eventually come around. did this further strengthen your report for the president? >> meghan: i wasn't so pleased with the president last night. he more than lived up to expectations. it was a lot more ronald reagan. of course, this was the attitude i would like to see going forward. a policy wise, it wasn't terribly different than when he's been saying on the campaign trail, what context does matter. for me, it is reassurance that he does respect the tradition of washington, d.c., of being president, which up until this point, i wasn't entirely sure he dead, and i thought it was a home run all all the way around. >> harris: i went to pick your brain a little bit more, charlie. one of the things i was watching during the speech, were the areas he could actually get things done. a speeches are great, but results are what america is waiting for.

that's why you voted to see change like this. you mentioned a couple of areas where republicans might not be behind him. he mentioned medicaid, medicare, social security, i'm looking for the poker face behind him with speaker paul ryan. what he's going to do for families, parents. >> charlie: i felt like last night, he stole the idea of health care from democrats. i felt like they realized it. he pretrade obamacare as being disastrous, he lured so many people into it. he said we won't leave those americans who got suckered into obamacare to struggle on their own, we are going to help them out of it, and that's not particularly conservative or republican. >> harris: i'm curious, how do you get things done?

>> charlie: whether that's enough to fix with obamacare, -- >> sandra: obviously, there were some stand out moments in that speech last night. the only tweet he has sent out. "thank you." >> jeanine: i was going to mention that he hadn't tweeted in a while. that kind of help to the speech in itself. everyone was listening and wondering what's been going on. what i liked about the speech, he spoke to everyone. when he talked about paid leave and family leave, he spoke to the issues that ivanka is going to be addressing.

the military, and immigrates, and a compromise as well as america first. he used amazing language. i think he co-opted a lot of this stuff. >> sandra: speaking of standout moments, you mention the military, the obvious standout moment of when he honored the widow of the navy seal. >> meghan: i couldn't handle it, i started tearing up and i have a cold, dark heart. i was getting emotional in my bedroom alone. i couldn't handle it. i think it was the greatest moment of it as a administration so far, even though it's only 36 days old. you have to be a complete and a total you know what to not be moved by that moment. i wasn't so pleasantly surprised and so many ways, whether or not the base like his speech, i didn't like his inauguration

speech. when you're talking about the darker tones, it's much more nationalistic than i am, but i thought the proof is in the pudding. almost 70% of the public responded positively to it. >> harris: it was above politics, it was a heart yoking moment, and i think it will be talked about for years to come. >> jeanine: isn't it refreshing that we are now recognizing the people in the military, the widows who lost their loved ones and now there is american pride. in spite of some of the languag language, the president can actually use national pride and talk about that without people getting hysterical. it's tone, it's delivery. >> sandra: charlie hurt, thank you for being here. let's move on. as we just mentioned, one of the most memorable moments from last

were white in solidarity with women suffrage and to protest the president. others boycotted that i'll handshake that is traditional as he enters the hall. democrats with enthusiasm, clapped and gave a standing ovation so far less than their republican counterparts. here's a reaction from chuck schumer and nancy pelosi just this morning. >> he's given a whole lot of speeches and we've seen that the speeches and the reality don't match. al say yes when he comes up with something that is really working for people and he says i want to work with democrats. >> it's clearly a bait and switch speech. the president talks a good talk. all we have is rhetoric, we don't have reality in terms of legislation where we can work together. we haven't seen any place to work with the other. >> harris: judge, it seems that the president was throwing on the goblin of love. he said true love for our people requires us to find common

ground. who would have describe that? >> jeanine: some democrats, clearly. he was speaking to the american people when he said looking, the time for all these trivial fights is over. basically saying, you guys lost, get over it. we work for the american people. this speech, i think will convince the american people that he's got an agenda that they have. when you see the stock market and it jobs, nancy pelosi saying that it's separate from reality, when the president tried to get jobs from carrier before he was even in the white house. >> harris: you see some members saying from inside the democratic party, charlie, that that was presidential last night. if they have a problem on their hands with the democrats. they are struggling right now. if all their opposition as to the guy who stood up to be presidential, that gets complicated for them. >> charlie: they have severe problems, none of which is that

nancy pelosi is still the house minority leader. the thing that is sort of interesting, it may have been something about the setting brings that out, it makes people look at him a new but a lot of this bipartisan, reaching across the aisle, even during the campaign, he said it peppered with a lot of other stuff and a lot more cantankerous stuff, but he has set all those things before. i think it's the first time, not the first time he's reached across the aisle, but maybe the first time he's broken through. >> harris: real quickly, we want to get to this, because i want to show this to everybody in case they missed it. there were no audible sounds, per the rules democrats can make, but did you see this? this before tonight i also calling on this congress to repeal and replace obamacare. [applause]

>> harris: i think i did hear some audibles. >> charlie: let's talk about su. because their female candidate didn't get through and they didn't get to vote for a woman? >> meghan: i'm not saying this to be trite. i legitimately don't understand what they want what the women suffrage movement, because i know it's a feminist movement. and it's tied up with being pro-choice and abortion, but that's we are talking about? you are not representing 50% of the women in america. i don't understand what rights i don't have as a woman, other than you're angry that a woman didn't become president. it has nothing to do with gender, it doesn't have to do with you putting up a historically horrible candidate, and i'm offended that you think you are present all women in the country. either not at all.

i assure you, if you're going on tv talking about how the government should pay for birth control, we should fund planned parenthood, there is 50% of the american woman who are out. it angers me. >> harris: does this fit in that same box of the women's march resigned? >> jeanine: i kept saying what are they complaining about? by the way, it's reminiscent of the 1900s when the suffragettes were white. the problem right now is that they are so angry that they lost, that women will lose more votes or they will lose more rights. every time the president talked about promising to save jobs, putting america first, women entrepreneurs, these women were thumbs down, thumbs down. >> meghan: government-funded

planned parenthood leave, which i'm against, and i don't understand why donald trump would give you more than hillary clinton, why these women represent all women in america. >> sandra: i go back to charlie's comment. it looks like they were all sucking on lemons during the speech. nancy pelosi -- her body language never looked like she walked into that room with an open mind. like she was going to listen and digest the speech any different than her preconceived notion of what he was going to say. her big thing, she released a statement, there is no job bill. that's her new thing. of course the white house's response to that is that's not how we are creating jobs. we are plummeting tax reform. government doesn't create jobs. up but nancy pelosi is going to stick to that point. >> meghan: they all look like they're waiting to get a root canal the entire time. >> harris: we only see this at the state of the union, this is

earlier than that. at this is just a joint session conversation at the had last night, it's never warm and fuzzy for whichever party is out of power. it's never like that. this is exceptional but they were all dressed in one color and thumbing the president. >> jeanine: they don't speak for all women, but when you think about it, you have the president of the united states, he is optimistic and his speech and he's looking at all of these women and white who were there to nay say anything he says with thumbs down, and yet he was able to keep delivering and ignoring that negativity in the room. >> meghan: it's about abortion and made should be intellectually honest with their statements. then came the democratic rebuttal from steve in a diner and middle america. >> as a candidate, promised to be a champion for families struggling to make ends meet. i hope you live up to that

promise. one of your very first executive orders makes it harder for those families to even afford a mortgage and even more troubling, you and your republican allies in congress seem determined to rip affordable health insurance from millions of americans who most need it. our political system is broken. it's broken because too many of our leaders think it's all about them. >> meghan: that response getting panned by both the right and the left. >> the democratic party it's at its lowest point of power in this country since the 1920s. at the democratic response was made by 72-year-old, or retired governor from kentucky, not by kamala harris, not by the castro brothers, not by anyone who has a future in the actual democratic party, just amazing

ineptitude for a party out of power like the democrats are. >> the response is always trouble, it's always bad. whenever you try to do something study and small like this, it ends up looking stunting and small. >> jeanine: that's amazing when rachel maddow and van jones as well. this speech was all about what we needed to hear. what we want, we want security on what we want jobs, we want to make sure that we have health care, but the man has delivered it in a way that made sense. >> harris: you mentioned van jones, he was one of the people who said the president was presidential and he said he became a president last night. again, i think that's extremely calm located for democrats. when you look at the total picture, where are we today, because that's what really matters. >> charlie: was astonishing to me is that they couldn't find an

actual elected democrat to deliver the response. >> harris: that's my question, where is the future? a >> charlie: he called himself on republican first and then he started talking about fiscal responsibility and all these things you never hear it chuck schumer or nancy pelosi talk about. >> jeanine: what doesn't make sense to me is that there has to be loads democrats who want to criticize him, so why him? >> meghan: they do have talent, which we talk about on the couch. democrats who have won an overwhelmingly red states that trump one, why aren't you putting people like that up? he has us of an extant, great, we'll put him on tv. >> harris: he doesn't threaten anybody inside the party. remember, this has had a race for dnc with ten candidates. they couldn't put up that many people to take on hillary before the primaries were over.

>> meghan: i was absolutely flabbergasted, it was something out of south park it, it so bad. they have people they can use and it you'll this retired man. >> charlie: also, because they don't want to have a hard discussion about what is our party about. you're right, it's a couple of very specific issues and it's not about a large, cohesive vision, whereas, with donald trump, we saw his party is about a very large, cohesive vision. >> sandra: if he couldn't win over rachel maddow, i don't know if he was effective in winning over anybody. >> meghan: pretty bleak if you can't win her over. it before speech, president trump indicated he could shift his immigration stance. when he got to the podium, he doubled down on his hard line stance. as the white house sending mixed messages?

you know who also doesn't like illegal aliens coming into the country and going around? legal immigrants. i can't remember who said this, even people who are here illegally, there still a pathway to citizenship. get in line and do it right. >> harris: that was the word you thought he needed to slip in there, that that policy was per illegal immigration. >> charlie: all politicians make that mistake. >> harris: talked about how what he said last night was different, because it sounded consistent with their legality of what can be done. >> jeanine: we still heard the concept of we can't have illegal immigrants here who are committing crimes, we can't have an environment of chaos, we have to have law & order. what he said that was different, there is a pathway for the dreamers, and recognizing that immigration is probably going to

be one of the signature issues, he has got to compromise. it was a start. >> harris: >> sandra: he saw tho reporters before the speech, but it's a mixed message. can he get away with that? >> jeanine: i think he absolutely can. it >> sandra: i saw some jumping points for democrats to come and take off their white dresses and the thumbs down. >> jeanine: and has to be compromised. he said that when he was talking about immigration. >> harris: , all before we get to this next part, meghan, merit based immigration policy. let's watch. >> president trump: switching away from this current system of lower skilled immigration and instead adopting a merit-based system, we will have so many more benefits. it will save countless dollars, raise workers wages, and help struggling families, including immigrant families, enter the

middle class. >> harris: i thought there was a new language from the president last night. >> meghan: this is politically tricky for him, because he did run and when being a hard-line immigration person. he had the most aggressive rhetoric we had ever heard. i think he will lose his base talking about comprehensive immigration. i think immigrants will never be pleased unless you give every immigrant legal citizenship. >> jeanine: i think the american people are tired of this issue, from bush, to obama, they are saying it's time to put this issue away, we've got to get rid of the worst of the worst, and it let's just deal with the fact that the dreamers who are brought here as little kids, who didn't do anything, are educated in our schools are allowed to stay here. thus the compromise. >> meghan: do you think people like ann coulter into laura and

graham, this is our cornerstone issue that they are aggressive on, that they'll like it? it >> jeanine: they won't like it at all, but they also understand how the sausage is made. is not pretty. >> meghan: i'm a lot more on the middle on this, so i'll be happy if he comes to reason, i think it will be unhappy people on talk radio. >> charlie: and 1986, when ronald reagan approved illegals amnesty, the deal is that we get amnesty. they did the fun part as politicians like to do, they didn't do the hard part. today, the argument that so many of these hard-line republicans have, let's fix the future problem so we don't have to deal with it again, and then deal with the other part of it. >> jeanine: there's a law, just follow it. >> charlie: two. to prevent a new flow of immigrants. if they actually cared about those people as much as they

what it is, there were not right ring questions. if they are who they are. if you look at everything from the world trade center, across the world, let's not kid ourselves. it is what it is, let's deal with it and get over it. >> meghan: recognizing extremism has been the problem with the obama administration. recognizing it is not mainstream muslims, it is brad's article dumb academic i thought it was the same if you are fighting in nazi germany and refused to say. >> charlie: you don't want to go too far and it seem like we are at war with islam. president bush worked hard to prevent that as well. obviously, there will be some criticism that trump didn't listen to mcmaster on this.

there are generals who make that argument to him that we have to be careful about that, but the words we use, what we call something like this, it's a political thing, it's a political question. the only person i can answer that political question is the president. >> meghan: i have the utmost respect for hr mcmaster, but being politically correct with this, where did that leave us in the last eight years? last i checked, isis metastasized and grew. >> harris: and may take days to take back that city, there are people who are trapped there as we try to get them from their resting hole, the scorpions who are over there killing people, isis. it is important to the nomenclature right, . i had a general and a green beret recently tell me that they react on the battlefield among some of the best fighters we have are gone against. what was the term of the president used?

being able to call things with ar is really important. i want to say this in regards to iraq. kim jong-un six, i've heard you say to make them dimock with regard, it's really about visa holders and not refugees coming from that country. >> meghan: i take offense at the idea that it ran or is a somehow the same as people who are going back and forth in saudi arabia. the language last night, sandra, did you react? we talked about this at length for the better part of the last two years. were you surprised? >> sandra: i think every buddy had a reaction to that, because he didn't just slip it in there. he stopped and paused after every word, radical islamic terrorism. he clearly was making a point
