otherwise worded market, concerned that the momentum for tax cuts and rules and regulation relief are going to go down. market value fourth snapchat, $34 billion. >> kimberly: i'm kimberly with juan williams dana perino eric bolling, dana perino and greg gutfeld. it is 5:00 in new york city and this is "the five." today in washington a new storm brewing over another one of president trump's top aides regarding they had -- whether they had improper contact with russian officials. >> let me be clear. i never had meetings with russian operatives or russian intermediaries about the trump
2:01 pm
campaign. my question from senator franken was as correct as i understood it at the time. i have recused myself in the matters that deal with the trump campaign. >> kimberly: this stems from a question secretary sessions was asked at his confirmation hearings in january. >> if there's any evidence that anyone affiliated with the trump campaign communicated with the russian government in the course of the campaign, what will you do? >> i've been called a surrogate a time or two in the campaign and i did not have communications with the russians. i'm unable to comment. >> kimberly: president trump stood by his attorney general today. >> mr. president, do you still have confidence in the attorney general? >> total. >> should sessions recuse himself? >> i don't think so at all. >> when were you aware that he
2:02 pm
spoke to the russian ambassador? >> i wasn't aware at all >> kimberly: we like the outfit. >> dana: i liked the president in that jacket, in this setting. he had a really good speech. it's always awkward when the presses shouting questions at you. especially when it has to do with the attorney general and they keep following you. he says he has total confidence. it's interesting to watch a new cycle like today unfold. this morning it was oh, my gosh. there's an earthquake in washington. around 2:00, i asked bret baier about him recusing himself. it's not an admission of wrongdoing. if anyone is concerned if it even looks improper to anybody, fine. okay, i will recuse myself and let the investigation go forward. by 4:00 today, that's what happened. the news in the morning looked different.
2:03 pm
hindsight is 20/20 and looking back, the attorney general was correct in his answer to the senator but it probably wasn't as wholesome as it could've been. i would've covered my tracks a little more to say no, i never spoke about it. as a senator, i did have a meeting with my staff about whatever it was about and be able to clarify it. that's the same individual michael flynn was talking to who, we know what happened with the rest of that story. he's no longer with the administration. >> kimberly: eric, do you think the messaging was good? coming out and saying he was going to recuse himself and giving some specifics. >> eric: terrible idea. i hated the fact that he did that. >> kimberly: that he talked about it or recuse himself? >> eric: that he recused himself. i feel like that was a weak moment for the attorney general and i think he could have stepped up and said i did nothing wrong.
2:04 pm
senators who chair the armed services committee will have contact with certain russian ambassadors pretty remember when bill clinton boarded loretta lynch's airplane during the investigation of his wife's email scandals. she felt bad about it but she didn't recuse herself. she said i will go with whatever james comey says. weathering hillary clinton should be indicted or not. that's basically saying i am kicking the can down the road. mccaskill today said i have been on the armed services committee for ten years. no call or meeting with russian ambassadors ever. ambassadors called members of the foreign relations committee. on two separate occasions, senator mccaskill tweeted "off to meeting with the russian ambassador. upset about the arbitrary rules."
2:05 pm
2015, she said calls with british, russian, german ambassadors on the iran deal. you are doing your homework and so was jeff sessions and the senator on the armed services committee. he shouldn't have recused himself. he did nothing wrong. >> kimberly: you are saying hold the line. >> eric: now that he's going to recuse himself on any further issues that come up as far as the campaign. i don't like it. >> kimberly: okay juan, what about people who say air on the side of caution in terms of what you're doing that it's above and beyond any reproach in that you're going to recuse so there aren't questions going forward about the investigation. >> juan: i think you did a great service to president trump. he elevated the level of integrity and trust the american people can have that this is going to be an impartial investigation. we've seen reports, house

intelligence, adam schiff is saying jim comey has been withholding information from the congress. we know for most americans, more than 50%, paint -- they think they needed investigation to get an answer. i think when you have someone not only of his own volition, his own initiative saying i'm going to recuse myself that saying my staff got together in my staff said mr. attorney general, you are involved in the campaign. it's not appropriate to sit there in judgment or decide what the fbi should be involved with. i think attorney general sessions upheld the highest standards of integrity for his office today. >> eric: one that loretta lynch couldn't do. >> juan: she did. jim comey came out -- one of the criticisms of jim comey was the gym comey as a prosecutor
2:07 pm
shouldn't be making decisions about whether to go forward. loretta lynch. >> eric: something -- >> juan: loretta lynch basically did the same thing. >> greg: this is bait and switch from the start. they were asking sessions about whether he had discussions with the russians about the campaign. he said in that context he did not. they bait and switch the question so they are saying wait, he talked to the russians as a member of the armed services committee. those are two different things. if they had asked him about that, he would've said oh, yeah, i talked talked to all the amb. i don't even know what i talked about it but had nothing to do with the context of those questions. it was a cheap trick from a party that is bereft of any
2:08 pm
ideas. this is a walkable strategy of the democratic party. they're going to go after, for the next four years, anything they can. to hit the administration. what drives me crazy is how riled up the democrats are over the russians considering that president obama, when mitt romney talked about the russian threat, president obama said the '80s called and they want their foreign policy back. apparently he was prehistoric under obama to discuss the russians are now the russians are evil. and then you think about the '80s, '70s, '60s when the russian was truly dangerous under the ussr. where was the left? where were the democrats? where were the liberals? they were anti-anti-communist. if you were anti-communist, you are seen as a prehistoric beast who thought there were commies under your bed. turned out we beat them in the cold war no thanks to you.
2:09 pm
>> kimberly: that sums it up and i like it. one of the issues is the timing of the meeting. catherine herridge asked about that. >> with hindsight, do you believe this is no coincidence that the russians asked you for meeting? do you believe you were targeted because it came at the height of russia's interference and at the same time, candidate trump was giving an interview to our team saying he didn't believe there was anything to the report. >> i don't recall i don't have a sense of any connection whatsoever about this. i'm not sure i even knew -- when we set up the meeting, what was going to be going to google on of the world -- what was going on in the world of the time. >> eric: talk about the timing. greg is right. all of a sudden the russians became an issue but look at when they started to leak.
2:10 pm
we hear about this. jeff sessions had meetings, conversations with some russian ambassadors. the obama white house was leaving a trail. this is 24 hours after president trump drops probably the best speech of his career, of his lifetime, and it is widely accepted as the best speech on both sides of the political aisle. he earned the office that day and know what happens? they throw everything they can to create any kind of diversion from that moment. in some circles -- >> greg: to the timing point, it lends to the idea about why the rebuttal was so lame. the reason why it was so lame was that they figure they have something in their back pockets. we don't have to handle this. we will do russia tomorrow and take the wind out of the sails. i'm impressed with how old-school journalistic action and concern is happening, somehow happen during the obama
2:11 pm
years. benghazi a punchline on a couple comedy central shows and among newscasters that it was an overdone thing. somehow now, every little thing as watergate. >> eric: how many people died in the russian lake? none. >> greg: know that we know of. >> kimberly: here's more from sessions on what he spoke to the russian ambassador about. >> we listened to the ambassador and what his concerns might be. we talked a little bit about terrorism and somehow the subject of the ukraine came up. it's got to be a little bit of the testy conversation at that point. ramped up. he said something about inviting me to have lunch and i did not accept that and that never occurred. i don't recall any specific political discussion. >> kimberly: he is trying to give some specifics but it's
2:12 pm
also a little bit of risk-reward. perhaps he heads off because there's a storm brewing. to answer some questions. what you imagine might happen could be worse than what he is saying transpired. >> dana: i liked the transparency and i think it's more the -- more than you got from others. so many different investigation investigations. the investigation probably had nothing to do with the senator, now attorney general. but about the russians. he is the center of all of this. he was the one who was asking and seeking meetings and trying to information. we know the russians are trying to metal. we are all americans. the problem is actually the russians on what the russians are doing. i think because the attorney general, the other thing he said yesterday, byron york reported this in "the "washington examiner"." he asked him how the job is going and he said it is super busy. it's a fascinating place to be but there is so much going on.
2:13 pm
he had so much work to do that i think he did do the president a service today and that they will be long-term gains for the attorney general and president trump because of this. >> kimberly: if you see that guy, run the other way. agent provocateur. wants free lunches, meetings. >> juan: i was listening to greg and eric and it seems like you put a very strong political partisan overlay. the democrats are trying to -- here's the thing, i don't. you can say juan, you are being a democrat but i think i am also saying, and this is a conclusion not just by president obama or some of these crazy liberals. this was the conclusion of the cia, national security agency, and the fbi all put their good faith. >> eric: why yesterday does this become an issue? >> juan: we have an ongoing --
2:14 pm
dana has pointed out. there are ongoing investigations right now, right now. what the conclusion of these intelligence agencies was and it was put out back then was that vladimir putin is trying to undermine public faith in u.s. democracy. >> eric: all of a sudden delete captains 24 hours or less after president trump delivers the speech of a lifetime. >> kimberly: not a coincidence. >> juan: it fit was coincidence, it was coincidence spectrum gave a good speech. >> greg: who was the most hypercritical about this russian stop during the campaign? i was talking about if they can have -- affect our elections, it's bad. this is not that. sessions did nothing wrong. you can't put these two things together. >> juan: his response to franken. i heard what you said about his
2:15 pm
response to franken but he also said no when lahey asked him, t? that's a different one and i think you have to understand if you were on the other side of the political aisle, you would be -- >> eric: not only senators on the armed services committee have meetings with russia. >> juan: "the washington post" said 19 of the 26 never had meetings. >> dana: this is not so much about sessions. it is about russia. why would the russian ambassador want to meet with sessions? he was considered a surrogate on the campaign. i didn't have business with him about the armed services committee. he wanted to know what trump was thinking in regards to ukraine and it seems that what the attorney general said we are for freedom for ukraine and russia doesn't like it. i think the attorney general looks better this afternoon that he did even yesterday. >> greg: remember, ted kennedy

he served admirably and honorably. there was nothing i thought was distant genuine about it. you saw the emotion when she was looking up to heaven saying "love you, baby" to her husband. we all learn and grow from moments like that of vulnerability and service and sacrifice to the country. good for president trump for honoring him and saying it was a successful mission because the intelligence reports are consistent with getting that information that a lot was gleaned from the raid in particular. we owe it to the people who served on it and her husband as well. shameful behavior from the people who tried to cheapen the moment. >> dana: in the moment when it was happening and everyone was clapping and it was emotional, i thought it was not only for the navy seal that died but for all of the military and the gratitude for the military. it seems like michael moore and those guys are over the top. >> greg: they always end up on the wrong side of the issue.

number one, simple rule: don't attack a military widow. even if you feel that because she was invited by somebody you think is evil or somebody you really, really hate, maybe just swallow that and go you know what? i will take the high road. we both play this game where we invite guests. they invite guests and we are guilty of it. this is an example of unchecked emotional hate. when you hate somebody so much, you hate donald trump so much that you are -- your hysteria allows you to attack a military widow, you can marginalize a grieving widow because you believe the person who invited her is evil. that's how it happens in their distorted, addled mind. the guy who lost his job is probably thinking "what was i thinking?" >> dana: that what i was -- that's what i was thinking.

he was complementary about the speech and once that happens, they attacked. the reason why the democratic party lost and i don't know if van played a role. there was a lot of identity politics going on that relied on name-calling. everyone was a racist. you marginalize law and order which allow someone like donald trump to come out as the law & order candidate. those of the two things they have to look at. ditch the identity politics and stop. >> juan: a prescription for democratic success from dr. gutfeld.
