9:00 am
security. let's be fair, that was a pretty impressive response by the police given they do know that was coming. >> in terms of security at westminster, to those who don't know, talk us through a kind of security you have to go through on a daily basis. >> i think it's pretty unhelpful to discuss that on tv. >> okay, fair enough. what i'm trying to get at is that there is an exhaustive security procedure. it is certainly a well thought through process. >> yes, there are always things that can improve. i think it's pretty good and we have to do now is think about the injured people ammo the cops get on with their job and will wait patiently watching sky new sky news. >> thank you very much. >> not just parliamentary business, scottish parliament debates have been suspended as well.
9:01 am
>> hi, sorry. we're having trouble. bernadette, you were on a tour bus going over the bridge. >> yes. >> tell me and your own words what you sow. >> is a noise i heard it first of all. i saw a car go out of control and go into people on the bridg bridge. then i saw people lying on the floor that were obviously injured. that's it. i saw about ten people may be.
9:02 am
>> thank you very much. a lot of people gathered here watching the scene, but a few who saw it firsthand. >> hello, if you're watching sky news, we are alive, about a hundred meters away from the palace of westminster. the building behind me is wds i. we believe that many politicians are still in lockdown as we speak. we have literally just arrived. we can't get anywhere near the the area. a place are going very quickly past us as we try to get a little bit closer. there are helicopters in the sky. of the latest fair hearing is that several people have been injured unless mr. bridge. we have seen images of people not moving, we hope they have
9:03 am
been taken to the hospital and will make a recovery in time. we can also tell you that a vehicle flight into the gates of the palace of westminster where the prime minister was holding or just finished voting. >> apologies, you can imagine there are some communication difficulties in a very crowded westminster right now. if you are just switching on, information continues to come in about what police at the moment believe is a terrorist related incident on the day of prime minister's questions. the prime minister was removed from the voting lobbies for her own safety. westminster station is being closed. the ambulance that have been parked have now left parliament square. there is at least one police officer that was attacked by a knife wielding assailant.
9:04 am
we can speak to robert nesbitt who has been reporting from the scene are close by for the last hour. >> i'm joined now by someone who is on westminster bridge at the time this incident happened. take us through what you saw. >> i was walking across the bridge when suddenly a bus stopped in front of me and every started screaming. i saw a trainer in the road, issue, unfortunately, someone was hit by a car. a body was on the other side of the road. and then another body for the route. we looked at the other side, there is another body lying in the water. >> any indication at what causes people to be entered? i do see a car come through? >> i didn't see anything. the first thing i was aware of was people starting to scream and people coming off the bus looking very shocked. there is a lot of confusion and
9:05 am
people who started dealing with the casualties. at that point, i tried to stop people from coming onto the bridge because a lot of people were coming on. >> how did you do that? >> just trying to waive them back. i think people could tell because people were screaming that some thing that was happening. >> you saw body in the water? >> yes. >> someone had fallen off the bridge? >> who knows, but it seem that way. their lying face down the water. >> what happened after that? >> after that, there was a pause and people seemed very confused for quite a long time. then medical arrived on a bike and ambulances arrived shortly after that. the police started pouring onto the bridge and at that point, they want us off the bridge. >> did you hear noises that sound like gunshots? >> i didn't, no.
9:06 am
i heard afterwards people saying that. i didn't hear that. i just heard the screaming. >> did you work your? where you are in london >> i live in wales and my daughter works here and i came up to see a show with her tonight. i was just walking around. >> a mix of people on the bridge, people who work, touris tourist. >> yeah, absolutely. it was busy. it was just after all these people coming towards me when the screaming started. beagle how quickly did use the emergency services respond? at >> there was kind of a low. until they arrived, we tried to keep people away from the scene and then they probably arrived within 5-10 minutes. when they arrived, they arrived in force and they very quickly at that point, by the time i reach the end of the bridge, they started putting tape across and ushering people off. >> okay, thank you very much.
9:07 am
sorry for making you relive that. it's interesting the people he saw were running from the scene, it was almost like they had competing impulses, one to film on their phones and want to run away. that's a sign of the times, a lot of people holding their phones aloft and not knowing whether to run or film. a number of people obviously have captured the immediate aftermath of what happened. a number of eyewitnesses clearly were processing what they saw. i will be joined by another now. excuse me sir, can i speak to you here? were you near the scene when it happened? >> i was with my wife and we heard three shots above the parliament. we walked through and we saw a
9:08 am
car pressed on the parliament and a person on the floor near the car, but i don't know what happened. >> that person was lying on the ground? they looked extreme the injured? >> yes. i don't know what happened because i didn't see it. i saw a person lying outside the car. >> what happen then afterwards? what was the reaction? >> afterwards, ambulances descended. they pushed the people through the crowd. >> they were trying to push people back. thank you very much indeed to
9:09 am
explain what you saw. obviously, a number of witnesses in this case and what they do now is it speak to all these people, try to piece together what happened from a fairly vivid eyewitness testimony. obviously, some fairly awful things that these people have witnessed. we ourselves are trying to put together some kind of narrative as to what has happened over the past few hours. >> thanks very much, indeed. the press association is going to make an announcement. they say there was a suspicious package in a vehicle. >> this is the image we have of the vehicle which has crashed outside parliament. we don't know if this is the four by four, vacancy smoke coming from the bonnet of that car, people being pushed back from the gate here outside the houses of parliament. other images that are coming to us now. footage of the prime minister, we believe this is the
9:10 am
prime minister's vehicle, let's give you these pictures. she was inside the house of commons as this happened. we do know she was removed safely from the building. our correspondent, let's bring in the latest we are getting. one woman has died and a number of others have been hurt, including some catastrophic injuries on westminster bridge. this is coming now from a medic at st. thomas hospital. one woman died, a number of others have been hurt. >> this is, as we already knew, of its terror-related, it's an attack which has resulted in a number of injuries and now, a fatality according to a doctor.
9:11 am
it's not an official response at this point. what do you know? >> as you can see, we are on the portcullis house side. there are helicopters everywhere. the prime minister was sent back to a car away from parliament shortly after the incident took place. as far as we are aware, the parliament is still on lockdown. there's the possibility of a suspicious package in a vehicle on the bridge just behind me about an hour or so ago. the car mowed down five people before the attacker went to get into a parliament wielding a knife and that's when he was shot. two people, a policeman was injured in that attack into people received medical attention, believed to be the
9:12 am
attacker and a policeman. obviously, we haven't seen an incident like this in a very long time. we haven't seen an attack in london since 2005. people around me with cameras, helicopters stuck in the london eye. a degree of chaos here, but police moving further and further along as they try to secure the area. >> thanks very much. the tweet saying our thoughts are with their victims, friends, and families. according to one junior doctor being quoted by the press association at st. thomas hospital that at least one woman has died, other people have suffered "catastrophic injuries." >> you can see on your screens now, emergency services on the
9:13 am
scene of westminister bridge. security services outside the houses of parliament, we also have a number of images that are coming to us from people who witnessed what happened today. a number of them are distressing. we are showing them here on sky news because this is a serious incident in the center of london and we think it's important to show you the reality of what has happened today. this is somebody who looks to have fallen or jumped from westminister bridge. these are the steps leading down from the bridge down to the river. this is also footage of people being treated on the bridge. it was some 6 minutes before the ambulance arrived according to the ambulance services. clearly, a large number of people going to with the assistance of those entered on westminster bridge which does appear to be the largest number of casualties at the moment. they were talking to a witness who is on one of the london
9:14 am
transport buses a little earlier about 10 minutes ago on sky news. it may be mistaken. she described hearing gunshots on the bridge. she then said they saw a car plowing into number of people. she described it as a car appearing to go out of control. another witness that we to just a short time ago described how he was on the bridge, he heard people screaming, he saw bodies on the bridge, he also saw a body in the water. if the car had plowed along the pavement, it would appear that people tried to get out of the way of that vehicle. the latest we are hearing from the medics at st. thomas hospital is that one woman has definitely died and a number of others are being hurt. we also know there are casualties outside the houses of parliament where this man, eyewitnesses say was burnishing a knife, appear to attack a police officer. that was where the police shots were fired. >> amid those pictures we were just showing you, i think we saw the prime minister's vehicle.
9:15 am
it is significant it was driving away down the street away from parliament. there is a plan that would come into effect at a time like the spirit of mark white, our correspondent has been talking us through how those plans of swung into action today. market can join us now to reflect on what we know so far. this already was a mass casualty event and now a fatal one it seems. >> yes, that's right. in terms of that plan you speak about, that is an action at the moment. you have an effective lockdown within the palaces of westminister as officers from a specialist are unseen and are conducting a systematic search, room by room of the palaces of westminister.
9:16 am
out of an abundance of caution and also with the knowledge that because of the incidents, they are chaotic and fast-moving by their very nature. they believe at the moment there is one attacker, but there may be more and they need to properly check out the palaces of westminister. in addition to that, they don't know whether this incident will remain a single incident or whether there could be connected incidents. we've seen another terrorist attack around the world that you would get multiple incidents unfolding at the same time or in close proximity to each other timewise and geographically. we are being told that london is also on lockdown at the moment. there is another search being carried out there. let's take it back the palaces of westminister. in terms of what's happening
9:17 am
inside, there is also still a security alert outside with reports of a suspect package within the vehicle, that hyundai four by four that crashed into the perimeter fence to the houses of parliament. at that suspect package will need to be properly examined. if there is any danger within the package itself, that will take a while. that's why we've seen the barricades extended. they want people even further back. if there is potential of a suspect package, they want to make sure that all of the rebel and disposal teams can get there and that people are not within harm's way. that's why they've taken quite a bit further back on the street. that's a good few hundred yards
9:18 am
down from the front of the palaces of westminister. that's what they do to put up these cordons, they make sure the area is a safe and they conduct these room by room searches to make sure that there are no more attackers within the premises there. >> hello, you are watching sky news. if you are just joining us, there is a major terror incident here in the center of the capital. it involves at least two separate incidents. you're looking at the london eye, just at the moment. we are being told that people are trapped inside those pods on the london eye. as you can imagine, many of the streets here are completely sealed off. we believe seven several people been injured. >> what we understand now from a
9:19 am
doctor nearby is that one woman has died and several have been injured, including some with catastrophic injuries. with a sequence of events appears to be, a car driving along westminister bridge, mounting the pavement, seemingly hitting people. one person went over the bridge, either jumped or was knocked over and ended up in the water in the car crashed into railings near the house of commons and there were some other very serious injuries. >> there was one incident on the bridge that potentially involved a dozen people. it did look as though this vehicle had purposefully plowed into these people who are walking across the bridge. he then carried on. >> that's right. on westminster bridge, driving towards parliament square, parliament and big bend would have been on his left. he drove down and appeared to go into a railing and there are
9:20 am
people who appear to have been trapped or crushed by the car at that railing point and we have heard from two eyewitnesses who i spoke to the last hour or so who said that there was a cyclist there who looked to be extremely unwell. we don't know whether that is the woman who died. obviously, he can see this in your mind's eye this trail of destruction that this car cause caused. it appears as a separate incident, we don't know if it was the passage of the car or the driver itself. someone jumped out of the car and went into the house of westminister and subbed a police that was shot. they are, we have mobilephone photographs of that person lying on the ground having been shot. his condition is unknown. as we've been standing here, we saw an ambulance with a police escort on either side, it could have been somebody who they thought may have been involved.
9:21 am
also, justices came out. >> just to give a geography, milbank is down here and left-hand side and a little bit further off to the right is where the palace of westminister is. >> as we came running out of that office, we saw these people running in the opposite direction. they were being pushed back by police. we came out after those shots have been fired, but this was obviously at the moment police were trying to expel as many people from the area as possibl possible. they were also trying to clear the area. they were imparted by police for a silver jaguar. our cameras got the picture and it appeared to be the prime minister who is being evacuated. >> are attracting more vehicles coming past us now. we're told by an officer that they're going to stop traffic of this vehicle.
9:22 am
not sure what it is. we'll keep an eye on that. mark white is with us. i don't know if you can see these pictures. >> those are the ctf officers. the counterterrorism specialist specialists, those of the officers, the elite of the metropolitan police. they are specially trained to deal with terrorist related incidents. some of those officers have been inside the houses of parliament, indeed, they are still inside. carrying out a systematic search room by room. they are making sure there is no one still inside but they believe may have been involved in the incident. those officers, we don't know
9:23 am
where they are. clearly, they're moving away from the houses of parliament. they are trained to deal with these kinds of incidents. just over the weekend, they were on the river teams and i was there as they were practicing boarding a pleasure cruise boat and a scenario dealing with hostages. they regularly train for these types of incidents. the fact that they had been brought in implies the seriousness of what has already been described as a major incident with one woman dead and another of other people we are told with catastrophic injuries. >> we can look at some images i think as there is more police activity here.
9:24 am
what are you showing to us? >> we are trying to pick out as judiciously as possible as what is appropriate to use. you can imagine we are being washed with images. this is not just a political media hub of london, but it's a place where hundreds of people who are equipped with phones and cameras. it they're a great number of pictures in circulation right now. we're trying to slip through his pictures in such a way we can show you what was clearly a dramatic unfolding situation. we are trying to trick a balance, and hope you can appreciate that we're sorting through that. if you would find these objectionable, this might be a good idea to look away. this is an image of someone who may have leapt over the wall at warhead over the wall. that's the river teams just up
9:25 am
top. this is adjacent to the palace of westminster itself, almost built into the foundations of the palace of westminister. this on the bridge itself. if by this time, we're showing you these images before paramedics arrived. st. thomas hospital is literally within meters of the palace of westminster. some of those paramedics, they can almost run from the hospital, they wouldn't need to get in there ambulance, but of course they are there as you would expect as well. let's show you some more images which have been sent into us. let's show you instead of live pictures pictures, we can show you a much more quiet scene in a sense from westminister bridge. the london eye is locked down as well with people still effectively trapped inside some of those pods.
9:26 am
>> let's just remind you what has happened if you're just joining us here on sky news today. we are hearing that at least one person has died, a woman has died and a number of others have been hurt including some with catastrophic injuries according to a medic at st. thomas hospital. it was just after half past two this afternoon when a vehicle ran along westminister bridge, some reports say and mount to the pavement, a number of people were hit. we had one eyewitness who described seeing a body in the river below. we have been showing you some distressing images, including somebody who has appears to have fallen or jumped from the bridge. a number of injuries and one woman died, we believe in westminister bridge. that vehicle continued into parliament square with a houses of parliament in the house of lords are situated.
9:27 am
it crashed into the railings outside. other eyewitnesses say they saw a man leave the vehicle armed with what appeared to be a knife enter the perimeter of parliament into the grounds where a policeman, we believe was stabbed and shots were fired. the emblems has taken people from that location as well. that is the latest information we have. london is now in lockdown. the roads are closed and people are being urged to stay away for the time being. >> communication is quite challenging here at the moment. an awful lot of police activity. leasing armed police officers who have been moving around the area. robert nesbitt is here and we were speaking a few minutes ago about the silver jaguar that was whisked away very soon after the incident. >> going extremely fast.
9:28 am
it parted all of us and the people who were running away from the scene and someone went, that's the prime minister. >> a statement will be made in 50 minutes we're being told. we are being told this is a terror-related. the statement will be in 15 minutes. >> the jaguar sped away and went on these sidestreets at extreme speed and we understand that was a prime minister being evacuated actually rapidly from the building. many of the mps are still in the chamber. a number of them have been told they had to stay where they were. they're not so much in lockdown as they were listening to what was going on and watching sky news. they have televisions around inside to try to ascertain what it happen. some of them have heard that the
9:29 am
shots in the old palace yard -- >> for people who don't know what the old palace yard is. >> it's inside the compound of westminister. it just inside the railings repeat tourist take their pictures. just over the railings inside the palace of westminster. very close to the road and very close to where this trail of carnage had been left by the car as it went up onto the pavement. eventually, it ended up and crashed into the railing. >> he's found himself outside -- but they trying to get back in and file his story. he's saying there is a very obvious weak spot as far security is concerned at the palace of westminster because they gates are are open and closed all the time. >> that's right. another access point isn't
9:30 am
currently secure. any to show your to get anywhere past the security gate. some people drive themselves, some are driven and there. at the moment, it's a metal barrier that is pulled back in the car goes in and the metal barrier is closed. it's on a wheel and they shout at tourists and workers to stand back and we all stand on the side of the pavement. to someone who is a very security conscious, they may look at that and say that's -- we don't know if it was through that or the next gate just down from there, so confused. both of them link onto the old palace yard. clearly, this is something they'll be looking at once all the dust has settled. >> we also don't know if it's two separate incidents. we don't know if the person that has been shot by police or apprehend it by police within the palace yard, if it's the same person that was the driver
9:31 am
of the vehicle. we don't know. >> or if it was a passenger in the car who jumped out. one of the eyewitnesses we spoke to very soon after, he said he saw the man, a man leap out of the car and saw him running. he didn't see where he ran too, but clearly the man who crashed the car got out a bakery quickly. we don't know whether he went into the palace of westminster. >> where talk about security here. it's been quite a challenge to get from where our offices are in west london as close as we have so far. police ticker tape is everywhere. it people are wandering around, not sure what's going on. within the palace of westminster itself, there is a lockdown. many mps are still inside the chamber of the house of commons where they had gathered. they will be there until the foreseeable future until they are told of that is safe to leave.
9:32 am
ed is still very much an active set terror situation. they don't know what else can happen. for now, they're going to keep the mps where they are until they are all clear. this is a very busy part of the city as far as terrorism. they're concerned. just across the river, that's where you'll see the london eye. those pods take about 35 minutes or so to go around. people are stopped on those at the moment. it they're not being allowed off for obvious reasons. we hear more sirens here. can you talk about what's happening where you are? >> we've relocated a couple meters. >> you are watching our sister network and sky london. hi, everyone, you're watching a terror incident at is being treated by authorities in london. you're seeing the breaking news eyewitnesses are being talked to.
9:33 am
what we have learned so far is that there were shots fired at the parliament complex. a police officer was stabbed, the assailant and all of this, as you are watching all of this unfold, it is being described has reportedly been shot. that was the very latest that was reported according to the leader of the house of commons. the london police and i will reiterate this is treating this as a terror incident until we know otherwise. the scene on the westminster bridge as we continue to watch the images there, we somewhat with people lying on the ground. some were reportedly heavily bleeding. we have now got an a medical report of some of those victims, one woman is not reported dead. it is according to a doctor in london. multiple others have catastrophic injuries. there were reports of the car mowing down pedestrians on the bridge as it approached the parliament complex. that was when we had reports of shots fired and this man running
9:34 am
with a knife according to some eyewitnesses on the scene. the parliament complex is in lockdown. the prime minister has been safely evacuated. the state department, as i bring it back here at home, the state department is following it. if they a statement. the president has been briefed on this, he called it big news. that's all we've heard so far. as we bring back to new york city, we are also being told that they are increasing their security presence here at some key places. you're watching this terror incident unfold. all this is being done with sources and eyewitnesses on our sister network there in london, sky news. by the way, we are also waiting for scotland yard to make a statement. let's go back and listen to sky in london. >> what did you do, did run awa away? >> i could just stand still. i couldn't move. i couldn't do anything about it.
9:35 am
i wanted to help the people, but i was not in the right state of mind. speak out some people said they heard gunshots, some people say they didn't. did you? >> i didn't hear any gunshots from where i was. i don't know anything about the gunshots. >> and the condition of some of the people who were on the bridge who had been by the car. >> i think some of them are severely injured, but it is a horrible incident. >> okay, thank you. just quickly before i handed back to you, to give you a summation. i have to say it is a combination of people starting to return home from work as we head towards 5:00 in the evening. a lot of tourists around here and help those who are waiting to get off the london eye club and kept on the london eye. it's being sold off for anyone
9:36 am
who is on it now. police are there and one by one they are bringing people off there. i don't think anybody on the eye has any idea what's going on. the last thing i would add, having spoken to my security contact, this is a very fluid and ongoing situation and they are trying to piece together what is actually going on using their intelligence sources. but also, gathering eyewitness accounts. >> okay, thank you. don't forget, we are waiting for a police update just up the roa road. that is likely to be within the next 10 minutes or so is what we are hearing.
9:37 am
they have already told us that it is being treated as a terrorist incident. whether it's one incident or two and whether they are linked. we just got a still that we would like to show to you. you can see it's a man on the ground, just looking at those images. a man on the ground being surrounded by police officers. the geography of that shot is concerned released her. suggested that it is an old palace yard. his legs are bare, as you can see. we are anticipating at this stage -- i'm afraid i have to tell you as we continue to look at that image is potentially a man that tried to stab a police officer inside the palace of westminster within the confines.
9:38 am
two people are now reportedly dead as a result of this terror incident. mark white is with us. several other people entered, but the latest we are hearing is that at least two people have been confirmed dead. >> a source just confirming that to me in the last couple of minutes. information that he has the no two people have died as a result of the incident that has unfolded outside the palaces of westminster and on westminster bridge. in terms of that second fatality, we know that the first fatality was a woman who died. we were told by doctors at st. thomas hospital that there are other people who are being treated there with catastrophic injuries. what we don't know, egard to the second fatality is whether that is someone who was struck by the vehicle on the bridge or also outside the
9:39 am
palace of westminster. there are three separate scenes here. there's was mr. bridge, where up to a dozen people we understand were knocked down. then there is outside palaces of westminster where the vehicle smashed into the railings there. a number of other people injured there. in the palaces of westminster itself, in the old palace yard, police officer was stabbed on the alleged attacker was shot by armed officers were nearby the palaces of westminster at the time. we don't know if the latest fatality that is being reported to us was anyone connected to the other two incidents away from the bridge. what we do know is that in about five, 6 minutes time from now, commander bj harrington, senior officer of scotland yard, i was with him on a counterterrorism
9:40 am
exercise, will be making a statement in which he is expected to give a bit more detail on the unfolding incident and perhaps share of bit more light on the injuries suffered by the police officer. we believe an initial reports suggest he was seriously injured. at this stage, we have no further details than that except he was seriously injured and taken to st. thomas hospital. sources just told me with regards to the overall number of dead and injured at the moment is that there are two confirmed fatalities and multiple people that have been injured. at some of those, according to an earlier source, a doctor at st. thomas' hospital has suffered catastrophic injuries. >> thank you. i know will continue to update us as you get more. we are expected to get more from scotland yard very shortly. they have confirmed this is
9:41 am
being treated as a terrorist incident. we've heard from mark there that two people are now confirmed dead. one of them a woman. it will get more information and update you on that. we can also tell you that people are still trapped on the london eye which is just across the river. people are being kept in those pods. we are being told that they will be taken off one at a time if and when it becomes a safe for them. looking at old palace yard as well and we believe that that is where one man was tackled to the ground by the police. robert, this guy who was an old palace yard as we look at these images, we don't know who he is, we don't know whether he was a threat, but we don't he was a stop the police and he had a knife. >> from what we hear from the eyewitnesses that we have spoken
9:42 am
to, he appeared to be a man in his 30s or 40s of asian appearance. as we say, once he got into old palace yard, that is when he appears to have attacked the police officers. he stabbed them with a knife that was a seven or 8 inches long. he was then shot by the colleagues of the injured police officer. we have now of course mobile phones images of that man lying on the ground and old palace yard. who he is, whether he was working with someone else, whether he was the man at the wheel -- >> this is fox news live coverage. i'm sandra smith in new york. there is still a lot of details about this attack that are not known. it is being treated right now as a terror incident by london authorities until they know otherwise. what we have learned so far is that shots were fired within the parliament complex. a police officer was stabbed.
9:43 am
the assailant traveled across the westminster bridge and reportedly mowed down pedestrians there and killed one woman. we are now learning a second person has not been pronounced dead in this proposed terror incident. at the london police treating this as a terrorist incident. west mr. bridge, the scene there, multiple people lying on the ground, some heavily bleeding, still not exactly what claire would happen there, but we are learning that the assailant traveling across the bridge approached parliament, got out of the car reporter lee with a knife, shots were fired, we are still learning up out more about this. the promo complex has been put into lockdown. the prime minister has been safely evacuated from the area. here at home, the state department has issued a statement saying they are closely following this. there's no reason to believe that we need to increase terror threat levels here at home, but they are monitoring. the president donald trump has been briefed on the situation there. he's calling it big news.
9:44 am
in new york city, authorities and the police era increasing security at some locations. we're also waiting on a statement from scotland yard on this u.k. parliament attack. there's a lot of details that are still you have to be known here, but we do know is that that car that was carrying the assailant has been shot, approached the house of parliament from the south side of the teams river. at then drove across the bridge, it was repeatedly an suv that traveled across her westminster bridge, apparently ran down several people, two people are no reported dead in this reported terror incident. it made on the left side of the bridge where learning, but there was a lot of pedestrians involved there on the bridge. he then crashed into a gated park across from big ben then fled from the car with a knife. it there are a lot of eyewitnesses of this incident and this is what we are hearing. scotland yard is making a statement, let's listen.
9:45 am
>> a terrorist of education is already underway. at this stage, i will confirm what we know has happened to me but it will not speculate. we received a number of different reports was included a person in a car ran over pedestrian's and a man with a knife. additional officers were sent to the scene and that includes fire officers. we are looking closely with the influences. i would like to repeat our request for the public to avoid the following areas. parliament square, westminster bridge, victoria street up to the junction of broadway and victoria embankment. this is to allow emergency services to deal with is ongoing incident. there is an ongoing investigation being led by the counterterrorism command and we would ask anybody who has images
9:46 am
or film of the incident to pass those the police. we now know there are a number of casualties, including police officers. at this stage, we cannot confirm numbers for the natures of these injuries. our response will be ongoing for some time and it is important that we gather all possible information. public safety is our top priority and we are reviewing across london and from the capital this afternoon. there will be additional officers on duty and deployed across the capital. i would like to ask the republic to remain vigilant and report anything that causes them concern. if they do, down 999 immediatel immediately. the minister is not injured, it would be inappropriate for him to be here to talk about this at
9:47 am
this stage. our thoughts and his thoughts are with all those involved in this this evening. if anyone has information about today's incident, they are urged to call. i would stress of the public has any information or see anything suspicious to dial 999 immediately. >> reporter: at this stage, does it seem to be over? >> i will not speculate. we've got officers responding. i want to stress that our priority is to keep london safe. additional police officers are deployed across london. i've told you what information i have and i will continue to keep you updated. i am not prepared to speculate. ladies and gentle man, i'm going to thank you very much for your time here. i would absently stress to the public -- >> armed and unarmed officers deployed to keep london as safe
9:48 am
this evening is what we are being told. we also heard that several people have been injured, including police officers. no confirmation of fatalities. at least two people have died as a result of this terrorist incident rate at the center of london this afternoon. mark white has been monitoring what police have had to say for us. he didn't give us that much. >> no, in these incidents, the police certainly confirm that they have a minimum of facts. there was a significant information in there as well in terms of this absolutely being treated as a terrorist incident. it is for all intents and purposes, a still ongoing incident. we have many officers still carrying out a systematic search of the palaces of westminster, looking for any other attackers that might be there. we are working on a theory that there was one attacker armed with a knife.
9:49 am
these are, by the very nature, facts moving and it is possible there could be other people and that's why the police have had an abundance of caution and because they have seen many incidents of terrorists related incidents in cities around the world we have multiple attackers and multiple scenes. they have to make sure that everything is locked down and safe. the right of the picture there, the officers from the counterterrorism specialists farm command, they are part of sco 90 fire unit. they are the elite, they train regularly to counter the threat of terrorist attacks. they have been involved in these systematic searches at the palaces of westminster. at the moment, with the police are getting clearly is to try to get on top of what has happened intelligence wise. they want to establish whether
9:50 am
this was a lone incident involving one attacker or whether there could be multiple incidents because again, we have seen just a year ago, this is the first anniversary of the devastating attacks in brussels. it wasn't just one scene, it was a bombing scene at the airport and then there was another attack at a metro station across the city. a police are mindful of that, we are seeing this pattern before. that's why you see for instance, outside the london eye, a big public gathered areas where many people gather, it gets locked on as well. they slowly but surely make sure that these areas are safe. that's why we're seeing this kind of approach by the emergency services by the polic police. they also want to send out a message of reassurance. they're dealing with this

incident here, one terrorist incident, but three components. the first of course, was that devastating attack on the bridge where this car plowed into up to a dozen people, we are told on the bridge. resulting in some absolutely horrific injuries and the death, we believe of one woman. then the vehicle went down the road into parliament square itself and smashed into the fence, the perimeter fence around the palaces of westminster. a source told me that there are other injured people from that scene as well. it people on the pavement just at the spot where the vehicle smashed into the fence. then of course, we have the third incident, where the alleged attacker left the vehicle and managed somehow to wrestle his way through the gates there and into old palace yard and the grounds of the
9:52 am
palaces of westminster proper. it was there that this confrontation with the police officer. at that officer we're told was stabbed. at this stage, we don't have a condition on the officer, but a source told me that he was seriously injured. also, we are told that the attacker himself was shot by a police officer appeared that attacker shot multiple times, we see a picture that is on the website that shows the attacker, the alleged attacker on a stretcher receiving cpr from paramedics as he is put into the back of an ambulance. let's remind ourselves of what commander bj harrington from the metropolitan police just said to us on the steps of new scotland yard just a couple of minutes ago. >> while working to get that

sound, shepard smith in new york with a breaking news out of london. benjamin hall is near the scene now. what do you see there what's the atmosphere at this moment? >> we've been trying for some time to get as close as we can to the scene itself, but this being the very center of u.k. government, it's shut down as many have the streets around it. you can see behind me now, the bridge on which this occurred. i'll talk it through a slight pay by play here. the bridge behind me is west windsor bridge and it was on that bridge around 2:30 five that day that a car veered onto the sidewalk and mow down civilians. there are about 12 who are injured there and we are tragically hearing that to have so far died. that was the first stage of this attack which police are calling a terror attack. he then continued to dive into parliament square, which we can see from here which is right outside the entrance to wear mps, members of parliament enter the house of commons. he crashed into the security

barrier before jumping out and attacking a police officer which people say was with a long stick which we believed to be a machete. that policeman doesn't seem to be a very, very wounded as well. the assailant then ran into the estates, the westminster estates at which point armed police officers started at him to stop, he did not and they shot him. he dropped very, very quickly. that's what we know at the moment. again, this is a house of parliament, there are about 5,000 people in there at any one time. the prime minister herself was in there, she was rushed out quickly. i got friends in their at the moment, i've been sticking to them. they don't know where to go, they don't know whether there are other attacks coming. the remote back and forth buildings. there are now pushing the cordon out. this is again a vehicle borne attack and we have seen it many times over when it comes to terrorist attacks like this, at least in nice and berlin
9:55 am
recently. he then jumped out and continue to attack with his machete. again, this is one year to the day that the brussels attacks happen. we are also hearing there was a lot of tat or onto hottie websites earlier. right here, the very heart of britain, the problem has been attacked, everyone is very much on edge. police are everywhere. there are ambulances coming up and down. the hospital nearby has been cornered off and is on lockdown. a lot of people are saying a lot of critically wounded as well. we hope of that number doesn't rise appeared at where also hearing some hear reports of mps who jumped on very quickly to some of those injured. a very scary situation, but you never know. police are taking up.

>> anyone who's been to london would recognize it where you saw it. it's the spot where you get the very best pictures of parliament and tourist on top of each other all the time, everything will day, trying to get that iconic shot or take a selfie and that's the spot where this assailant went. that says to me potentially, this person wanted this sort of attention, they wanted to disrupt, i'm hearing already that people on the streets of london, as typical of londoners, are saying we must reconvene parliament even this afternoon. they don't want this to stop their way of life. >> absolutely. this is symbolic and it would be very, very full of tourists. we are hearing reports of them -- a french school students who are there who may have been caught up in this. of course, this is where people congregate, this is where they come to see london. this is where people congregate. this is where they come.
9:57 am
very worrying in that sense. yes, i don business. they've always said i never want to be affected by terrorism, it wants to keep going. there is a debate in scottish parliament that stopped when this happen. they're now saying they want to start again. >> the prime minister was present when this happened, they scuttled her away quite quickly. >> there was something going on and we have footage of that speaker standing up and saying there has been a major incident, please all stay here. the mps were ushered back out there. the prime minister herself is now safe.
9:58 am
she was bustled very quickly into a car. you can feel it in london, he could hear the ambulances, he can feel the tension. you can hear the helicopters overhead. it's a sad day. it feels like this is now terror coming to london. >> we just got word from our correspondent that the prime minister is back at the residence. they will have emergency meeting afternoon with trying to devise a plan to go forward. think of what it is we are witnessing here. on television screens around the world, on every network that is a news network around the world, it is westminster bridge and the british parliament and this picture of this vehicle that you see in the left-hand side of the screen. it may be blocked by the banner at the moment, this picture that is resonating around the world, this apparently was one man with

one knife. that has brought the entirety of the united kingdom government to a standstill. it split the entirety of central london in lockdown. capitals and major cities around the world are reacting on what is the one-year mark of the attack in brussels. we have no idea who this assailant is, what his beef was, and in fact, we don't know his condition at this moment. we do know that after he stabbed people, authorities engaged him, shot him on scene and very famously, the british bobby stone, police always carry weapons. at this part of central london, around the heart of government. they are very well armed and they worked today and whoever this assailant was after stabbing a number of people and taking his vehicle down the bridge, apparently as a british authorities have put it, mowing down a number of people, people

are incredible condition. at that assailant was shot, emergency workers seen giving cpr to that assailant and now to find out, who this was, what his motive is, and whether he is working with >> it is 1:00 on the east coast, 10:00 a.m. on the west coast, 5:00 p.m. in london and there is breaking is now on fox news channel, i am shepard smith in new york. british police say they are treating today's attack in the heart of london as an act of terrorism and there are "multiple casualties" including police officers. by that, they mean injuries. so far no word on who the attacker was, but the suspects motive may have been or whether the attacker acted alone or with others. here's what we do know at this moment. investigators say police shot a man after the suspect stabbed an officer outside the british parliament building. witnesses say they heard multiple gunshots. reports also indicate eight
