9:00 am
page. i try to respond to some of the comments. look forward to your feedback. see you next week with the latest buzz. [♪] eric: healthcare not dead yet. president trump vowing yet again to repeal and replace obamacare. while also trying to shore up support for a new republican backed plan. hello and welcome to a new hour of america's news hea "america's headquarters." arthel: mr. trump tweeted today that anybody, especially fake news media who think repeal and replace of obamacare is dead does not know the love and strength in our party.
9:01 am
talks on repealing and replacing obamacare have and are going on and will continue until such time as a deal is hopefully struck. christian fisher picks up the story at the white house. reporter: the tweet from the * would seem to indicate -- the tweet from the * woul -- from pp would seem to indicate he's going to have to play nice with the house people caucus which thwarted their first attempt. but senior administration officials took action in the opposite direction. the director of social media at the white house fired off a warning shot that if they don't get on board with the administration's agenda, then this white house is prepared to actively campaign against them in their own primary. here is the tweet that started
9:02 am
it all. it reads "real donald trump is bringing jobs back to michigan. just continue mash is a big liability. trump taken defeat him in primary. same old agenda, attack conservatives and libertarians and independent thinkers. in the same tweet congressman mash said bring it on. >> just continue amash is a good friend and one of the most principled members of congress. if he is pry married, i'll do everything i can to help him. now scavino is coming up fire
9:03 am
for violating the hatch act. the white house is countering that by saying no, he did not and the reason he did not is he made that tweet from his personal twitter account, and not his official account. critics will say that's splitting hairs. that a tweet from a white who is official is a tweet from a white house official. arthel: it appears it's a gorgeous day down there. what is president trump up to today? reporter: he's playing golf over at a trump international golf club in virginia. he's playing golf with two people central to the effort to repeal and replace obamacare. i'm talking about republican senator rand paul. he even hand out copies of the art of the deal to members of the house freedom caucus to give
9:04 am
them a leg up during the negotiations, and he's playing golf with budget director mick mulvaney. i imagine healthcare and the second attempt to repeal and replace obamacare will come up on the golf course today. as you said, arthel, a pretty beautiful day to do it. eric: there are more developments in the growing investigation of russian influence in the presidential election. the reported ties with russian officials. there are payment from russian businesses to some, the speaking fees, and reported contacts with those in moscow during the presidential campaign. but our intelligence officials continue to say nosed has so far emerged to show collusion. the senate intelligence committee could start interviewing witnesses tomorrow behind closed doors. and even more revelations about
9:05 am
the former national security advisor, michael flynn. reporter: the white house yesterday released financial disclosure forms detailing michael flins finances going back to 2014. he earned $1.3 million for his lobbying work with other countries, including russia. that detail was not included in his original disclosure in february. but he gave paid speeches for three separate russian companies the last few years, including russia's state sponsored television network. we don't know how much he was paid for those speeches because the forms only say the was more than $5,000. congressman adam schiff said those forms only add to a growing list of questions he has about flynn's ties to other countries.
9:06 am
>> we requested the background security documents that general flynn filled out to find out if he similarly failed to disclose work he was doing as a financial agent of a foreign power or receiving financial support from a foreign power. reporter: that investigation has received a lot of criticism from both parties and sparked calls for the creation of an independent special commission to conduct the investigation. but on "fox news sunday" mitch mcconnell said at this point that would be a mistake, given if the senate intelligence committee is conducting its own investigation and steered clear of the politics that hampered the house. >> it's not necessary, based on what we know now. we have a bipartisan investigation under way, it's called the senate intelligence committee. the f.b.i. is looking at it from their perspective it's being
9:07 am
hand appropriately, and it will be handled well. reporter: the senate intelligence committee has some of its first interviews schedules. eric: thanks so much. >> vince i want to get to general flynn later, but if you would, give us a roadmap of the senate interviews. what information would the senators be looking for along the way. >> because of the bungled nature of the intelligence committees, i think it will take a very clean hopefully disciplined look at these early discussions. they are bringing in 20 interviews. the majority of whom that has been reported are members of the intelligence committee putting
9:08 am
together the january report. and in that report the intelligence community came to some conclusion, one that russia was trying to meddle in the election. and trying to assist donald trump and/or damage hillary clinton in the process. now the intelligence community will ask a lot of questions. how do they know that? hopefully they will do a very specific question. why wasn't john podesta's name mentioned in that report. he was the chairman of hillary clinton's campaign and made the most news in terms of his emails. how specifically did russia invade john podesta's emails and disseminate those to the public. thearthel: what is the exact evidence that led the committee
9:09 am
to believe that. >> if you are a member of the intelligence committee you can't just be satisfied by the intelligence community coming to you and telling you, these are our conclusions without showing you a roadmap. what are the specific pieces of evidence. a lot of these conversations will happen in a classified the environment. law make percent as approximaties for the american people need to see the specific evidence. let's move on now to michael flynn. why did he request immunity? is it too soon to read into why his request has not been accepted? >> it probably is too soon to read into that. the people investigating anything mike flynn might be involved in as it relates to russia has time to go.
9:10 am
maybe we need mike flynn to help give us information that nobody else can give us. mike flynn would have to be in control of some information they need access to that they wouldn't get out of him necessary was granted immunity. this call for immunity is interesting. he's publicly calling for immunity, his lawyer is, which is not something you normally see. if you wanted immunity from the f.b.i. referring this to the justice department, that would happen behind the scenes. but what this seems to be is he's requesting congress grant him immunity. the senate intelligence community grant him immunity so he can testify. if he does, anything he would say before congress couldn't be used in an outside court. which is an interesting bit of chess for him. it suggests there is something he could be in trouble for. arthel: you have the president publicly saying give michael
9:11 am
flynn immunity. should the president publicly support the process of his investigation? >> absolutely. if you are involved in the government you should support the process of a fair and objective investigation. i think on the house side it's been all over the place. both the ranking member and the chairman of the house committee said a lot of things in public that has given the impression the investigation prejudiced. on the senate side hopefully they are more responsible. they are saying so publicly. he want this investigation to bear out. he wants general flynn to be granted immunity to speak, which i think is interesting. it suggests that he feels like look on the trump side there is no problem. let general flynn testify and grant immunity. they will will be thanks a lot,
9:12 am
we'll talk to you again. eric: the president of afghanistan sitting down with fox news in a rare interview with the foreign media. meanwhile the radical islamic fighters of the taliban continue to keep up the pressure as they show no signs of giving up their goal of he overthrowing the government. conor powell is live from afghanistan where he interviewed the afghan president. reporter: while combat operations ended in 2014, the afghan security forces are engaged in a deadly fight against insurgents. the taliban waging attacks in recent weeks and months.
9:13 am
they control key areas in places liklike helman. will they continue with the training and advise mission? the president ghani saying he wants u.s. trainers and advisors to stay in the country. he says he wants to see american businesses involved in the development of their sizable mineral deposits. >> the way they worked shoulder to shoulder. we would be able to develop this country. we don't want to be a burden on you. reporter: the pentagon estimates there are a trillion dollars
9:14 am
worth of natural resources from lithium to natural a gas. infrastructure here is pretty poor. security is the big problem and corruption is endemic. clearly president ghani is trying to talk to president trump saying you are a businessman. america has business opportunities here. hydroelectricity is improving here. the big issue is security. and president ghani has to balance the gains with security. and building relationships with countries like india. one message we are seeing is a much deeper commitment to working with the american government than president karzai, his predecessor. that's a step forward from what we have seen in the past.
9:15 am
eric: conor, congratulations on snagging the interview with the president. the threat of islamic terrorism and jihad is a top priority at the united nations. the ambassador nikki haley sat down with me to discuss her plans. ambassador haley comes to sought job from being governor of south carolina. she says she'll be reforming the u.n.'s budget and the u.n.'s what she calls unrelenting bias towards israel. she called bashar al-assad a war criminal. she says he used creme cal weapons against his own people at least three times. as we'll note, she calls on
9:16 am
china to do more to rein in china and kim jong-un's regime. and she says there is constant criticism of israel. >> the biggest surprise is truly the anti-israel bias. every single month they have a briefing on the middle east. but they are not talking about the issues we would care about. they are not talking about syria or iran or north korea. what they are talking about is israel. every single month for 10 years they have been i shall rail bashing. -- they have been israel bashing. i couldn't believe they put the time and energy into doing that when we have so many threats around the world. eric: we'll talk to former ambassador john bolton who held that job about china and other topics. and tonight you will see more am balances doer haley's interview
9:17 am
at 6:00 p.m. on news *. 6:00 p.m. -- on america's news headquarters. arthel: will the chinese shep calm the situation in pyongyang? a wall of mud and water in clommial as the death toll right. >> we don't know what the death toll is going to be. we'll continue to search for survivors. and the first thing want to say, our heart and the hearts of all colombians are with the victims of this tragedy. so i feed jakew naturals indoor, a nutritious formula with no artificial flavors. made specifically for indoor cats. purina cat chow. nutrition to build better lives.

termites, we're on the move.24/7. roger. hey rick, all good? oh yeah, we're good. we're good. termites never stop trying to get in, we never stop working to keep them out. terminix. defenders of home. i mwell, what are youe to take care odoing tomorrow -10am? staff meeting. noon? eating. 3:45? uh, compliance training. 6:30? sam's baseball practice. 8:30? tai chi. yeah, so sounds relaxing.
9:20 am
alright, 9:53? i usually make their lunches then, and i have a little vegan so wow, you are busy. wouldn't it be great if you had investments that worked as hard as you do? yeah. introducing essential portfolios. the automated investing solution that lets you focus on your life.
9:21 am
arthel: the headlines we are following this hour. authorities in southwestern michigan identified a 13-year-old boy who died after a carbon monoxide leak in a hotel pool area. authorities say the leak was caused by a broken pool heater. in colombia they are searching
9:22 am
through massive mud and degree. the death toll rising to at least 200. more remain missing. in a south korean cargo ship and a crew of 22 missing after losing contact in the south pacific. two crew members were rescued. but other life boats found in the area were empty. eric: president trump will meet with the president of china this week, xi jinping. the chinese leader is set to visit? trump's florida estate at mar-a-lago for talks. this comes as the tensions between the u.s. and north korea has been growing it's a situation the president would
9:23 am
like china's help in diffusing. joining us is former ambassador to the u.n., john bolton. kim jong-un, and his program to continue ballistic missile testing, do you think china can persuade its counterpart to rein in the dictator? >> no, i don't think so. their capability to get one of their nuclear devices on to a target to hit the united states. our military and intelligence officials think this is imminent, perhaps as early as next year. i think what china needs to hear is they need to apply their unique capability to pressure north korea to make that happen. this is not something to be negotiated between the united states and north korea. this is something china needs to be responsible for.
9:24 am
we knead to think what the end state is once that pressure is applied. eric: the diplomacy has boo bame back to them. north korea was taken off the state sponsors of terrorism list, giving them an olive branch, and they give us a slap in the face. >> i wouldn't trust that regime as far as i can throw it. they will agree to almost anything if it produces tangible benefits to them. they pledged on multiple occasions to give up their nuclear weapons program. they have never been serious by the and they have never done it. we have wasted se -- so much ti. it's also why we are facing some
9:25 am
very difficult choices with respect to possible use of military force to keep if the united states safe. i think the only real acceptable outcome here is the end north korea itself. the reuniting of the korean peninsula. if china wants as it says, wants north korea without nuclear weapons it needs to step up to the plate which it has not done these past 25 years. nikki haley, the current u.s. ambassador to the united nations told me china should i am poas d impose sanctions on pyongyang. >> china is the only one that can november north korea. they can pressure north korea to step back.
9:26 am
reporter: do you think beijing will? >> i think they have to. this is a threat to the world now. eric: we heard about stopping some of the trade. but they clearly haven't done enough. >> what goes in other direction. china supplies over 20% of north korea's oil needs and a substantial amount of food and other systems. i think china is well aware it has all the leverage it needs over north korea. way it's afraid of is when it exercises that leverage, the regime is so fragile the whole thing could collapse. china fears the consequences of that. i think there is a deal between china and the united states where they can accept in effect the merging of north korea and south korea and eliminating this nuclear weapons threat. but it's a complicated issue.
9:27 am
we should have started talking to china about it decades ago. 's north korea continues his ballistic missile program and testing, the day when they will be able to deliver a nuclear warhead anywhere in the world is fast approaching. anything they have, the next day iran can have if the price is right. eric: those missiles are not aimed at beijing, but aimed at us instead. thank you for your insight. arthel: a church retreat turns into tragedy. a congress grow nation coming to grips with a dozen deaths. a report on what may have led to the dead lire bus crash. president trump insisting a deal on healthcare will happen. but how does he turn around the house freedom caucus saying they
9:28 am
will accept nothing but total repeal. >> people find out if this bill pass as it is, people find out the rates go up and number two, this was not a repeal, it gave government more power.
9:29 am
9:30 am
do ..
9:31 am
my business was built with passion... but i keep it growing by making every dollar count. that's why i have the spark cash card from capital one. with it, i earn unlimited 2% cash back on all of my purchasing. and that unlimited 2% cash back from spark means
9:32 am
thousands of dollars each year going back into my business... which adds fuel to my bottom line. what's in your wallet? arthel: welcome and many republicans insist play to repeal obama carries far from over including vice president pants. in a speech yesterday to small business owners in ohio and president trump tweeting this morning that talks will go on. one group that is key to a deal if the house freedom caucus did the party's replacement plan has been under attack at the president. one member, congressman louis go mark of texas described early his meeting with the president if her the bill was scrapped.
9:33 am
>> he was ready to make a deal. we were negotiating with paul, kevin mccarthy, right up to tuesday. all of a sudden they had a meeting and they'd decided we are so close to having the number we need. let's go to war, get the president help us go to war against the people -- when ryan and those guys at abandoning. trades with a colleague in the house, republican from north carolina, congressman, good, congressman, good to have you this morning. first react to congressman louie gohmert's remarks. >> sure. i know louis. he is a fine person. i think at this point it is time to come together. this is a conservative bill by any means. it eliminates the mandates, eliminates a trillion dollars in taxes, puts health care back in the hands of the american people where they can choose the health care they want.
9:34 am
refunds medicaid for the first time in 62 years. by any standard this is a concerned bill. we need to look at ronald reagan. ronald reagan once said in 1983, some people want me to jump off a cliff holding onto my convictions. and yet he said i believe when l take half of those now in the other half later on. while i respect those, it reminds me of hamlet. that statement, you protest too much. it is really time to lay down their swords and come together and bring this bill forward for the american people. arthel: so do you think that president trump and vice president pence by saying the repeal deal is not overcome is that a plan or a litmus test on a message that the president would like to work with you? >> this is important policy.
9:35 am
the president wants to pass health care. this is a major tenant of the campaign, a promise he made to the american people. it's disturbing he can deliver on the promise. this is beyond fanfare. we need to get this done. arthel: what is your take on the president: not the freedom caucus. some members by name on twitter and effects threatening to campaign against him in the primaries. tnr should president trump mend a broken relationship with the former tea party arm of the gop? >> is always best to come together. i think he tried very hard taking members to mar-a-lago, to the white house. multiple times over 120 members of the white house. the president engaged with the united states congress in recent history. so i think the president made a promise to the american people. he made a promise about health care, lowering the tax burden, fair trade. he wants to make good on this promise. he wants those other members to
9:36 am
see this is our chance. this is our moment. reforming health care is really foundational to it allows us to move or the tax reform. >> he wants to make good on its promise. should the president be able to resuscitate from the repeal and replace? would you advise him to be more hands-on than the actual policymaking? >> yes, ma'am. i think you'd be excellent hands-on. he's invited countless numbers of people to be the white house negotiated one-on-one. the president is fully engaged to his credit. he sincerely put his best foot forward and trying to understand their needs. we have a broad conference. we have people who come from districts with a lot of poverty, the subclassing to come of those surveyed, those world. we need to recognize each of us have a different perspective but come to the table with.
9:37 am
all of us need to respect that. if we were able to do that, we can come together and pass a bill that will be meaningful. arthel: congressman, what i meant by asking if you think the president should be more hands-on in terms of policymaking, you are right. he's done a good job in terms of inviting people to the white house, many of those who have not gotten as invitations before. but there have been reports that he was involved in the dealmaking, handshake and if he will comment that not really the sausage making. that is what i'm talking about. the actual issues involved in the health care bills. >> well, he has a lot of smart people around him. when you're president of the united states coming to hire a lot of smart to stand next to you. arthel: but then you can say this is ryan care. he's got to own it is going to have smart people around him. >> he does own it. what is done is take the advice of multiple people. an advisement fix the counsel of many people i think you've done
9:38 am
it and i think he owes us. he wants the american people to understand what's in this bill, when it's really good for the american people. arthel: congressman, i am out of time. one more thing to say to you. hokum wines. >> same to you. you bet. eric: a day of prayer is an emotion not a church in texas alternates for sunday service after losing 13 numbers of the and the tragic bus crash last week. a group of senior citizens heading home after a church retreat when a pickup truck swerved into their lane and crashed head-on into the minibus on when they just west of san antonio. the witness at the scene reported pickup truck driver admitted he was texting before the deadly crash. will car is five and a west coast bureau with the details. reporter: eric, investigation continues this weekend at the first victims are made to rest.
9:39 am
white pickup trucks were being in between lanes just before the crash. one driver says the truck cab driving into oncoming traffic and eerie back-and-forth for at least 15 minutes. >> there is a white wine all over the road. he's off on the right hand side of the road. i don't know what the deal is. somebody needs to stop him. >> the truck eventually crossed over the yellow line and sent into the bus turned members of the first baptist church. they are returning from a three-day retreat. her teen people were killed. their ages range is from 61 to 87. the 20-year-old driver of the truck survived and is currently in the hospital. investigators looking into reports that he was texting and driving at the new brunswick community continues to mourn. >> many might ask the question, why would god allow this to happen?
9:40 am
i can't answer that question. but i am confident of this. i am confident of god's perfect plan. >> authorities did not charge the driver the truck the driver of the traffic is going to tell us the investigation could take a month or longer. as it stands now, texting and driving is not illegal in texas did roosevelt make its way through the legislature that would make it a misdemeanor. eric: that is so tragic here thanks so much. meanwhile, american troops try to stabilize afghanistan. new controversy as russia now aligning itself with the taliban. plus there are several tornado watches in effect across the south today. be careful. we'll have an update from the fox extreme weather center coming up next. relief chews. they work fast and don't taste chalky. mmmmm...amazing. i have heartburn. alka seltzer heartburn relief chews. enjoy the relief.

they see as a win-win for us. we need to shift our focus for under the obama administration, our mission was trying not to lose. said we should figure out what our generals and troops needed in order to win. this sounds like a basic concept, but it's a pretty significant, strategic effort that means that shipped with the new administration. eric: would you suggest talking about a potential new surge in deployment? >> waccamaw general nicholson is requesting, the commander of the mission seems to be satisfied with a level of special operations. he is requesting a few thousand more troops with regards to training of afghan forces. it is important not is important that afghan is able to defeat the taliban. obviously with this added element of russia now meddling with more fights coming here in the weeks and months ahead.
9:50 am
there's leadership of taliban and then understand this is not going to the right direction. however, a lot of rank-and-file taliban have not yet come on board. in order to cut those deals that are needed for those elements that haven't yet been defeated in order for deals to be cut, rank-and-file law had to suffer heavy losses the coalition forces. eric: wherever you show up, rush is pushing back in afghanistan is a new front in that. congressman lee zeldin of long island, new york amid thank you for joining us. thank you for your insight and your service in iraq and going back to see conditions in afghanistan for yourself firsthand. >> thinks, eric. arthel: a new clue in an intense manhunt after a missing teacher and his former student are spotted on surveillance video. we will have the latest on the investigation. ke an "unjection™. xeljanz xr.
