let's talk first about susan rice's role as national security advisor. a white house staffer position, she is not an investigator, she is a consumer of investigations put on by the fbi, cia and nsa. what possible reason would she have legally to ask for these names to be unmasked? >> the identity of an american citizen captured in this surveillance, number one, to make sense of the intercept, knowing the name of that american individual is like the special decoder ring to understand what the intercept means and what the conversation is about. the second is the discussion of a crime or crimes being committed on that call. if one of those instances,

somebody with access to this information can request the information is unmasked. the key question of whether she had the legitimate reasons to unmask it is pretty simple. heather: was that her job or role and people responsible for doing that in the name of national security, and the national security and white house staffer? >> the key is understanding when looking for information what is necessary to understand it and all of this is on a need to know basis. an extremely important question of whether susan rice is one of those need to know individuals, who had access to that information, did not need to know it.

unmask. almost like it is unraveling. is that a really big thing if she has to testify? >> this is somebody who claimed there was nothing about surveillance at issue, serious credibility issues, any other trial offense where you have a witness given inconsistent statements before trial, then you go in, your testimony starts changing, real credibility issues and those facts have to take that into account of those inconsistencies and she has some explaining to do. >> who directed her to do this? >> absolutely. let's see where this rabbit hole goes. heather: thanks for joining us. rob: let's check in with brian
