tensions between the two nations. >> whatever comes from the u.s. politicia politicians, their words are designed to overthrow the government, we will reject them. as i said, trump is using a degreessive words. it's the u.s. that is threatening us. >> this week on twitter, president trump called north korea a menace. he said the u.s. and its allies are ready to solve the problem with or without china's help. north korea is ready to celebrate the day of sun. it's the birth day of kim il-song. in recent years, kim jong-un has fired missiles. the country could test a nuclear weapon if given the go aheads. it would be the sixth ted. the country has been testing

missiles and some experts say north korea could be a few years away from building an intercontinental missile that could strike the u.s. the country is isolated but letting in western journalists ahead of the holiday. greg palkot filed this report from pyongyang. remember, officials are watching him so he cannot speak freely. >> this is maybe the most dangerous of the year here. north korean leader kim jong-un's talking to the associated press and telling us what we've been hering from other officials. that they will confront reckless u.s. military maneuvers with a preemptive strike using a powerful nuclear deterrent. take a listen to more what he said.

>> we're taking into account the most aggressive and dangerous option that the u.s. might come up with. we also have our options. our counter measures are ready in our hands. that means we'll go to war if they choose. >> the people of pyongyang get ready to mark the anniversary tomorrow of the birth date of their founder, that's kim il-so il-song. that they could detonate another nuclear device. finally, as we watch officers pay their respects to the birth place of their founder outside of pyongyang. officials are saying that president trump is causing all the trouble. he says provocations are coming from the white house. listen to a little bit of a provocative talk that we heard from a north korean colonel. >> even though the u.s. is

trying to invade our country, to attack, we have such a mighty strength. if they do, we would smash the head and blow them up. >> president trump at one point said that he's had a hamburger with kim jong-un and try to work it out. next he called it lip service, fighting words. jon? >> greg palkot in north korea right now. let's bring in carol lee. carol, there's indications that north korea could launch a nuclear test this weekend. but they have tested nuclear weapons five times previously, including twice just last year. what makes this different? >> it's different because by all accounts, the u.s. very concerned about not just what they might do this weekend or with this particular test, but this is a regime that has been advancing its technology and its
12:06 pm
capabilities. so, you know, when president trump came in when he first met with president obama, after the election, this was the thing that -- the issue that president obama said was going to be the biggest crisis for him and that it was the most important thing if you look around the world, at all of the different crises, this is the one. the reason for that is because north korea, while the u.s. has isolated north korea, it's one of the most sanctioned in the world, notice has worked and north koreans continue to advance their program bit by bit. so that's the reason why this could elicit a more dramatic response or something a little tougher than what we've seen before. the concern is that this is just another step down the road. also, you have to factor into this how much this administration is trying to get china to do things that china has not done in the past.
12:07 pm
so there's a lot of messages here. it's hard to know what messages are being sent to north korea and what are sent to the chinese in terms of the level of talk of whether it's willingness to use force or moving an aircraft carrier into the region, things like that. it's both directed at the north koreans and the chinese who president trump really wants to do more to cut off the final pipeline to pyongyang. >> president trump has been leaning on president xi of china to do something to extend his influence to try to get north korea in line. are there any signs that it's working? >> from the white house's perspective, they feel like they're getting some advances. china rejected some coal shipments. the white house felt like that was a positive step. something that happened this week, which is not necessarily the related to north korea, china abstained from a vote in the u.n. that's very unusual that this
12:08 pm
administration thought was a good sign that china wants to have better relations. the other thing is, the "wall street journal" had an interview with president trump this week. one of the things that he said is he's told president xi that he would get a better trade deal with the u.s. if he does something on north korea. so you're seeing this president try to maneuver in different ways to try to get something from china. if you talk to administration officials, they feel like the foundation is set and that they could be moving in the right direction, but they want to see more. >> but president obama and president bush before him both thought they had assurances from china that they would help keep the north koreans in a box. that didn't exactly work. >> that's right. that's the thing with the chinese. they make a number of promises and they say they're going to do certain things and then, you know, time goes by, maybe tension is off of the issue of
12:09 pm
north korea and they don't actually follow-through. you know, as we talked to administration officials, they say they have a plan. the president signed off on a strategy for dealing with north korea and has different benchmarks, the three, six, nine months they're willing to do. obviously benchmarks meaning there's certain things that they want china to do for instance. if they're not seeing progress on that, they may move to something else like the so-called secondary sanctions or things like that. a number of different options that they have in this broader plan. they're giving china the time to do what they say they want -- will do. if they don't, then the white house says they have some backup plans for dealing with that and taking it to the next step. >> interesting weekend ahead on the korean peninsula. >> carol lee at the white house. >> thank you. >> north korea is not the
