veterans to seek treatment in special circumstances but is it enough to guaranty quality care for all of our heros. senator, good to have you this morning. heather: good morning. abby: we appreciate that. i will start with the question, is this enough? >> our military men and women sacrifice every day for freedoms and liberties, our well-being, promises have not been kept, the choice act which was passed several years hog clearly is a help, 1 and a half million veterans across the country are accessing care outside of the va paid for by the va, thousands of healthcare providers are participating, but the -- in the past, this is not been a piece of legislation that a law that the department of veterans affairs emigressed and the va continues been a bureaucratic place.

that in and of itself is an accomplishment signed by president trump that extends that program, that simplifies that program and make sure that the bills are paid for easily and medical records are shared between va and private health care providers. heather: congress developed the program back in 20114 after the deaths of several veterans when they were waiting at the va specifically in phoenix, arizona, so this program was to expire in august, now that won't happen, but what you were referencing, how do we make it actually work? >> well, it will take a different attitude and approach than we've had in the va in the past, i see that coming. perhaps it's improving. part of the program which can be a help is veterans don't know that that's an option. in a state like mine where veterans live long distances from a va hospital, if you live more than 40 miles from the va

facility that the va must provide those services at home if that's what the veteran wants and we have many veterans in this country who don't know that's an option and in addition to that, if you can't get the service you need within 30 days from the va, then you have the ability to have those services provided by the hometown physician admitted to your hospital of your neighborhood and from a distance and time point of view, those are things that can consistently improve the quality of health care for our veteran and meet that commitment that was made a long time in return of their service. abby: it's hard to get care. what i find refreshing, maybe the only issue in washington with bipartisan support, republicans an democrats coming together saying we have to make improvements here. >> senator john, we were on the senate floor a week ago, ten days ago, we were able finally to get this passed unanimously

and the united states has passed in house of representatives and signed fbi president. it is an example where there are issues that transcend, overcome opportunities to have a fight or to bicker and it's nice to see that the place that we are able to do that is in the care and treatment for those who served our country. we have a long way to go, many of our iraq and afghanistan veterans, mental health issues are a significant issue, ptsd, those services are not as available as they teed to be, that can result in tremendous challenges as a veteran including as the 22 suicides a day that serve our country. this is only a step and we need to make sure that republican-democrat effort continues on behalf of those who serve. heather: 30-day wait period is not going to work in some circumstances, that's what i was thinking about when you mentioned that. the president has proposed a 6%

increase in the budget for the va, is that enough for 2018? >> well, the money that pays for this extension is available, it's already appropriated. this will take us into next year and congress then needs to have the further debate about how we refine and improve this program based upon input from veterans and their organizations across the country and so we have a ways to go, what i would say is it's -- i share the appropriation committee for the department of veterans affair and in that capacity it's my view and i would be one that would support more money for taking care of our veterans but i don't think the problems have been money. the problems have been attitude approach, bureaucracy, culture at the department of veterans affairs and so knew leadership at the va and we need to continue on a hour by hour, day-to-day basis changing the va operates to make certain that the goal -- not the goal but the

cheryl: there's so much to think about technology, it's great and fun but the new lawsuit is eye-opening. a new lawsuit filed in illinois, both heads phones are spying on you specifically the app on your phone that you download to use the headphones, collecting data, music, audio choices through the connect mobile app and then they're sharing it with other companies without using users content. this shows a wholesale disregard and the plaintiff carl zach purchased the wireless headphones but it's not just headphones and apps that can spy on your activity, other common devices like the amazon echo devices, google home, they've been in the news in the courtroom as well. smart tv's, laptops which are now covering with duck tape and monitoring, watching and sharing your information.
