they are still looking for meat. we will see right here next week. lawmakers making a jampacked schedule at capitol hill as a return after two weeks out. this has the major tax cuts are on the way in a plan unveiled next week. hello and welcome to america's news headquarters. great to be here with you today. the president down downplaying the timing of the health care vote. all of this is happening as congress faces a looming budget deadline to avoid a government shutdown.
1:01 pm
it is the priority this week. they are life from the white house with the very latest on all of this. what we know about the details of the new tax plan. >> we know it will be involving a tax cut. that's about it. it came as a bit of a surprise. and present trumps on treasury officials who are standing around him when he made this announcement yesterday. he then double down on the promise by saying the biggest tax reform and tax reduction will be announced next wednesday. at the same time president trump is also pushing congress to revise the obama care replacement plant when he was asked yesterday due to its possible to actually be able to get all of these things done by next week here was his response.
1:02 pm
how are you going to accomplish all of that. it will be great. no particular rush. we will see what happens. but healthcare is coming along well. the government is coming along really well. a lot of good things are happening. >> and does it matter if it's next week. next week doesn't matter. the one deadline that absolutely does matter that can be moved as a avoidance of a government shutdown next friday. for congress for the house republicans it's something that has not happened. and the number one priority. those that protect the country they have an exciting announcement today.
1:03 pm
this was an unannounced trip to the walter reed military hospital in president trump went there to award a purple heart to a soldier that was just injured in afghanistan present trump said that when i heard about this i wanted to do this my cell. he then met with other wounded service members before returning here to the white house. to prepare for the big week ahead also had heather we just learned the present trump had scheduled a big rally next week. in pennsylvania. i'm sure we will cover it. great job things. for more on all of this. it's good to see. before we get into the details of what the president's agenda is i want to go back to what he did today at walter reed awarded that purple heart because significantly that sense a huge wave of support
1:04 pm
out there in terms of what he did for the sergeant and acknowledging the service of our men and women in harm's way. what do you say about that? has an trump certainly made veterans in supporting the military a big part of his campaign. i believe it's the first time visiting walter reed since becoming president. president obama often went to walter reed as well. the capacity as part of the protected fool. we never got to watch him give purple heart's like president trump did today. that was an interesting choice. one, we think of the men and women who serve in harm's way. let's get back to the subject at hand. that is government shutdown. it is a biggie. it's something that the president wants to avoid.
1:05 pm
one can understand why. the american people would like to see that avoided liking the president get enough cooperation from both members of congress to do that? speemac is certainly right to say that he wants to avoid it. for the republican control of the white house. it's no doubt on everyone's mind. a lot of people are asking the same question. is it too much. the 100 day milestone is very ridiculous.
1:06 pm
was something like healthcare. it is a lot. it does seem unlikely that he would get all the things done. it certainly ambitious for him to try that. we hope you can get it done. he doesn't seem to at least he publicly stated that he doesn't appear to be that concerned about this. if you don't get it done with next week. i want to get something done.
1:07 pm
and he said as a candidate he wants to get a lot done. and the truth is whether you think it is a good criteria or not it is a criteria. as a measuring stick when they make promises if they win the election. the first 100 days going back to fdr. because of what we are coming out of the great depression. they had put it since then. at present trump is not able to accomplish that. it has already had many successes. it's due to executive orders. what does he have to do or what will happen if he doesn't get anything done
1:08 pm
legislatively. >> the suggestion that he hasn't gotten a lot done. certainly the supreme court. but on the legislative side that is something they will be working on healthcare and tax reform to the big ones that he promised. and that is what markets are watching and investors are watching kate how would you characterize lies that relationship they're having with the media. there has been tension no question the fact that he has scheduled told the rally. an interesting choice. and we already knew that he wasn't coming. but we will go on with at dinner and we look forward to having it. will have that with or without the president of the united states. thank you for wrapping it up
1:09 pm
for us. and have a good dinner next week. thank you very much. the number of casualties rising in afghanistan after deadly attack on one of the countries military bases. after 140 afghan soldiers in fact had been killed or wounded after gunmen wearing army uniforms stormed a base in the northern part of that country. they are life from the middle east bureau with more on this. they have taken responsibility for this attack obviously the single most deadly salt targeting afghan forces. it took place in the northern part of the country and happened last friday. the army base was infiltrated by two they were wearing army uniforms entered the base.
1:10 pm
they were wearing the suicide vest. they believe the taliban could not had pull this off without assistance from someone on the base. i don't know maybe the head some inside to help them. this can have enter the compound. they traveled to the base and pray for those who died. tomorrow will be a day of national morning with the flag flying at half staff. this attack was in retaliation
1:11 pm
also threatened that there would be more attacks targeting both pleased police in the military. this year's operation they are about to have to the polls for the first round of the presidential election. the race remains up for grabs in tightening polls but one wildcard that could have an impact the terror attack in paris earlier this week we are live in paris with the very latest. what can you tell us on this? >> kelly, it is a wild election they go to the polls tomorrow and is called important and unpredictable. choosing between 11 different candidates the two top vote
1:12 pm
getters will get onto a runoff run off in two weeks time. among the candidates the right party candidate he is established but he has a an independent moderate. she is an outsider. as well as the far left wing guy. it shows how unsettled and how unhappy the population is here both about the status quo about a segment economy and also concerned about insecurity that was underscored. the one officer was killed two injured. the government here treating it as terrorism. the guy that was once killed. he somehow felt through the tracks. why the government is beefing up here.
1:13 pm
they would be watching the polling stations tomorrow. they absolutely don't want a replay of what we saw here in the heart of paris on thursday. the candidates mean final statements with some of them reflecting the attack and we've heard from le pen she wanted the explosion of all terrorist suspects. there is concerns not on an international flight but a domestic front here and have a very unsettled and very unhappy populace one third still have not decided who they are going to vote for tomorrow. no matter who the president will be 80% of the population to vote. probably the most unfavorable

result that the u.s. analysts are thinking about is that if they choose their next president and he or she want to pull the country and of nato or the european union or want to do both. that is highly unlikely in this election anything is possible. you hit the nail on the had right there. we were listening to the comments and you could hear the same things in uncertainty and fear. marine le pen said you such want to hold a referendum of leaving in the european union. how might that impact the european union as well as france or globally. it is seen as yet another referendum. she has been calling first for france to just completely get out of the eu.
1:15 pm
and then she talked about negotiating. she is playing all sides of the coin on this one. there is a concern here in france about the european union as they are and a lot of different places and its impact on the economy again. perhaps the founding country for the european union and there is still a sentiment in favor of it. is another .-ellipsis test on the way western countries operate in as you heard from the people is wide open. a real concern for everybody who has something at stake here. the election is can have a global impact depending on the outcome. coming up a suburban home goes up in flames and explodes. what they say could have ignited the raging fire plus

it has not improved as last november. what do you think the state department came out and said they were in compliance. it was an effort by the swap this is a career state department officers put in place by obama to defend the terrible deal that actually allow them to be in place. when he said he is not in spirit of the deal. it needed to be reworked. repeal or replace. what needs to happen. i am really worried about this. that is obama people. what do you think they are

1:35 pm
i think that is good advice for legislating as well. and i think you can put a deadline on them. they wanted it to be very difficult to make a decision. when it was being made. in the bigger the decision the bigger the fight. some of this would look at this and say they would equate all of this to the titanic. that is not a good metaphor. the metaphor is you do it right and you worry about the schedule a second and that was a lesson. so when it comes to healthcare into this new plan that you will be pushing for and we understand there's been a lot of progress in terms of talks but once everyone gets in a can get ugly it can go either way. you don't want to go sideways. up or down. you still have a problem there in the in the house with the freedom caucus and of course you have the more moderate republicans as well so will

two of my favorite people. let's get things started here. we mentioned that this is a district that has always been run by republicans i should also add by those who lived in the district which he does not. is is an indication of a present trump and what is to come in terms of midterms. >> i don't think so. i commend john. he did an unbelievable job winning the vote down there. but i don't think it is his success. it was not indicative of anything more than two things. the find that he really worked incredibly hard and try to connect directly with those voters in the district. as you mentioned it is not been won by someone in the democratic party in 37 years. we have to remember special elections are very unique and just because people show up
1:45 pm
even if they pulled it off it means nothing we as democrats don't not assume that trump is going to i spoke with someone earlier this week and he said that this wasn't present in trump's faults. nothing against present trumpet. that was a problem there. different candidates splitting the republican vote. also while tom price did when that district by 30 points
1:46 pm
donald trump only got it by about one and half points. that becomes a difficult dynamic. it tells you about americans they like incumbents and they like knowing with her getting get. he was an unusual kind of risk taking canada but by the time the midterms come up people are going to know what his intentions were he has already delivered on the economy and he is delivering more on jobs. he will deliver on taxes in obama care which will be transformed well at least be not destroyed american families. there can see a very different quality of life that's it so they will be voting on. i think also the advice is very good. take nothing for granted donald trump made the difference in both kansas and in georgia with robo calls that were not without -- within 48 hours. he is the one that is good to be bringing republicans across the finish line.
1:47 pm
they seemed very hopeful or confident this time around because in several of the districts where democrats did not seriously compete back in 2014 they have already have announcements. a lot of first-timers coming to the table they seem to think that they can win at least 15 declared candidates so far. i think there is no question that the 2016 election cycle bold in first-time people that have never been engaged in politics previously. they are looking for ways to get engaged in the pedicle process i think running for office is much more effective if you actually want to impact change than and going up and marching in the rain. that is fantastic. i do think if the democrats want to be successful with to really look at our message and our values and actually stand for something not just against it. if these news people running.
1:48 pm
it's not just about being new. it's about what you represent. what are you can do. you are not getting that from it from perez or keith ellison. and if they don't quite know what's going on ensure there is enthusiasm. were still not so not even through the first 100 days. the democrats need 24 new seats to regain control in the house while will they be able to do that? >> i think it will be very difficult. if the democrats were smart they would have to focus first and foremost on the united states senate protecting those where it donald donald trump one by 11 points in 2016 so i think it is going to be reach but they have a message and they have the organization maybe they will hold off. you're right. the democrats should focus on defense of the senate because
1:49 pm
the republicans will take even more seats there. i think the republicans will gain some in the house but it will be in the single digits and this is a dynamic where the gop has got to really work hard. not just holding their seats and keeping their jobs are really delivering for the american people. we are seeing a lot of engagement. thank you so much for joining us. have a great weekend. >> the recent incident on an overbooked flight turns out to be very costly for the company's ceo. what oscar nunez just lost. they are cementing a flight attendant after the video posted on social media went viral. spring is on. and it's time to get growing. as america's #1 professional lawn care company, trugreen can tailor a plan that turns your ordinary lawn into an extraordinary one.
