2:00 pm
he crawled for miles a day. he stayed with friends at night so far he has raised more than $28,000 for charity. that is a dedication. dedication. good luck to him. that does it for us. the first 100 days townhall up next. >> good evening everyone. welcome to the first 100 days townhall. we're live in canton ohio. today they were slamming canada on an unfair trade deal and huddling over the major tax cuts that we expect are going to roll out sometime tomorrow. while insisting that this campaign promise will happen watch. >> the ball gets built. 100 percent.
2:01 pm
the questions about the tax cut in that ballooning deficit as well as the investigation today of mike flynn. sean spicer laid out the record. >> the present has been taking action and putting america back to work. by putting the people back into the government. he has worked with congress to pass more legislation in his first 100 days than any president since truman. to clear unnecessary regulations. he has signed 28 pieces of legislation. from 30 different world leaders. and hosted a total of 16 bilateral meetings. they have made incredible progress and is the first 100 days but this is just the beginning. we are coming to you life as we said from machinery in north canton ohio. you can see the great crowd
2:02 pm
that we have here tonight. has been true in the presidential election. and it was here as well and start counting where canton is. we witnessed one of the most compelling stories of 2016. as a local paper put it the day after the accident donald trump did not just when the stark vote he conquered it. he defeated hillary clinton by more than 70 points. in this county just four years earlier president obama beat mitt romney in this county by less than 1%. so what happened here over the course of those years. that is what we wanted to dig into tonight. what was it about president trump and the canada that resonated with the many voters in ohio who had voted for president obama twice. it could have been the message that he delivered just 10 miles from here on the spot at the end of the campaign.
2:03 pm
>> the message is a good message though. it is a message of confidence in jobs, jobs. america's trade deficit with the proposed countries cost the state of ohio more than 100,000 jobs last year. imagine how many jobs and more jobs would be lost if tpt was actually approved. we will not let that happen. that is the president on the campaign trail not far from here. but three months and to the new administration are voters happy with what they're seen from president trump. do they feel like it is getting better. do they feel like the job market is starting to pick up. we will get those answers straight from the people tonight. we will also be joined by two ohio natives as well as the state's former democratic governor ted strickland.
2:04 pm
both of them were very pleased to have with us tonight. we want to start out with the people who gathered here tonight and i welcome all of you it is great to have all of you here tonight. let's start by talking to some of the executives of this great country and as i said we've just been really impressed. what you observe in the first 100 days as someone who helps to run this business what has changed. has anything changed. >> i think optimism, excitement more so than ever before. we are seeing more people looking to manufacturing within the country than outside. that optimism is starting to grow. i think over the past eight years we did not see that as much. some of the trade deficits are starting to be dwindled down.
2:05 pm
we're starting to see the fruit of that labor. >> we watch now president trump on the campaign trail. the fact that he canceled the early on does it have any real impact on this company. >> as you know we ship a lot offshore. i do feel that we will continue to do that very strong to say have a big impact on this company i really couldn't say. at the end of the day we have always shipped offshore. it's too early to say whether we are way to get there or not. we have seen that the consumer confidence numbers had been pretty strong over the past couple of months. a similar situation in the election as far as wisconsin in ohio. when you look at your company what has changed.
2:06 pm
i just want to mirror what michael said. what has changed specifically we have great employees and we've seen more interest out of what we will call younger generation we have we've a great apprenticeship program. and we see the interest. we did not see that before. i don't know if that is due to the facility we had had or if it's due to just the changes in optimism and the focus on manufactured let's get a couple more people in. you can talk about their perception of what happened in your state of ohio which we always talk in politics about how ohio is such a microcosm for the rest of the country as well. robert finn did not support president trump in so now 96 days in.
2:07 pm
i'm curious if you could stand up for us. what are your thoughts. my first initial thoughts were surprise, i was surprised at how many individuals would be making about opposite to what i thought when i didn't think it would benefit them. i was also surprised for the banter that went back and forth from individuals. if i can be frank some of the hate language. i was surprised to see how we could have opposing point of views and somehow one side or the other was anti-american. those were some of my first initial thoughts. >> have any of your concerns been allayed or not. as far as the surprise no. that is already that's part of my personality. whatever happened has
2:08 pm
happened. we have to continue to move forward. as far as dealing with other individuals who may have an anti- or opposing point of view than what i have that is still there. i was surprised that some of my friends and you have that social media i wanted to get off of the social media now. other than that. those around me have moved on. timmy you work here. let's just get the microphone. talk to me a little bit about it. when you look around this state. and you learn about the plans i had closed here over the years all of these great names that we all grew up with that disappeared that close their
2:09 pm
doors here. how does it feel now. >> i've a personal experience that i was actually during the obama ministration laid off three times. i knew what it was like to come home and say how my going to pay that house payment. i did what i needed to do. i have watched fred's loser homes so this area especially like this company. some people work there. is stifling. to be from ohio and watch a president come in that gives you so much hope and hopefully not be a typical politician. what is your reaction to that. we all need optimism and hope but we also need certain
2:10 pm
action. the truth is that ohio lost 4,000 jobs in march and so there is optimism and we appreciate that. but the fact is i believe the president talks better than he ask and let me just say why i say that. he has not renegotiated nafta. i congratulate him for withdrawing us from tpt. it's early. i'm willing to give the president some time has been less than a hundred days. i think we need to observe very carefully what is happening china is no longer a currency manipulator. and we heard a lot from the president before president before he was elected that he was going to declare a currency manipulator.
2:11 pm
i want to hold him accountable for the promises he made and i think that is only fair. a quick thought from you. one of the reasons that they tipped off a little bit may have been that the health care reform did not go through. your thoughts as something who has run that. then we get to go to break. if you look at the two months in fact that we've had president trump in place. they added 36,000 over the past year. they've been since president trump was elected. we had 1300 manufacturing jobs in the state. that's a lot of jobs and a lot of growth. and a lot of it has to do with the regulation with shrinking that bureaucracy.
2:12 pm
if you look at the 28 bills that he passed. most of them related to shrinking the size of the government. we will be right back with a lot more. the trump administration declared its going to get tough with canada and others in order to protect american jobs. we will have reaction in new ideas, and the thoughts of the people of ohio. we will be right back. ...it's how well you mow fast! they're not just words to mow by, they're words to live by. the john deere ztrak z345r. we always take time getting to know you, so we can ensure you hear what matters most in your world. grandpa! i'm gonna just go back to doing what i was doing. find your awesome with the xfinity x1 voice remote. welcome back everybody. we are back here at north canton , ohio. president trump tried to change that by signing an executive order to ease burdens on america's farmers. that happened today at the white house. also port penalties. on the neighbor to the north. canada has made a business for our dairy farmers and other border states very difficult. we will not stand here he is.
2:17 pm
i'd love to canada. and you people understand that. we did institute a very big tariff we announce it yesterday and working to take care of our dairy farmers in wisconsin and upstate new york. and lots of other places. let's go back to our town hall audience and get your thoughts on this and some of the bigger picture but i actually want to start with a bigger picture. let me lay out the question for you first and then you can raise your hand. with your thoughts on it. the question is what do you think about the presidency so far in the first 100 days. are you strongly in favor, do you have concerns about how things are going or are you disappointed. let's go backwards. let's start with those that would say 96 days and i'm
2:18 pm
disappointed not too many. all right. a couple of folks back there. the second part sort of concerned things are okay but i'm a little concerned. so how many strongly support what you see so far? >> hands up all around. you heard the are the president just talking about moments ago. about the canada issue. ways to improve their business. do you think they made a wise move. >> i think our workers need to be protected. and when it is and takes action i applaud him for that. that's why i brought up the currency manipulation that they are undertaking. suddenly it's not a big
2:19 pm
problem. as i said, i meant to give the president the time to do what he said he was gonna do but i'm concerned about some things about the fact that his budget cuts about $300 million from the great lakes restoration project which will eliminate that program totally. how many of you. if you are unhappy about cutting funding to that great lakes restoration program region. and who does not have a problem with that. about half of those that wait and i would say. his buzz it does make his budget does some other things. it is a head start funding. he wants to eliminate the region. and why that is very significant there are 36
2:20 pm
counties in ohio and 32 of those counties for donald trump. and yet he wants to eliminate the arc which is vitally important to these small communities in appalachia. the coal miners. at the end of this month 20,000 retired coal miners will lose their health benefits into the president has been silent about the issue. it's an important issue. he needs to speak up. and keep his commitment to those minors. in terms of the promises that were made to bring back jobs to america and you have that combined with what you're discussing which is cutting some of the programs let's go to steve who is a machinist. steve if you can see in a forest and can you tell us what you think as you're listening to all of this. i think the jury is still
2:21 pm
out. it's too soon to say he is a tremendous success or total failure. to send to make a final decision on that. in my case i was working at a place that was pretty heavily invested in the oil and gas industry. and we saw things kind of tapering off in the oil and gas. so fortunately i have a markable skillet machine. and i was able to get new work. serve the up-and-down in the general energy kind of area have suffered quite a bit. i am encouraged with what i see so far. like i say the jury is still out. i am thankful to have that opportunity.
2:22 pm
do you want to weigh in on any of that before i break. >> one thing you need to do is to just had a negotiating decision. we are canada's largest customer. canada does not want to mess with us. if you mess with us we will retaliate. and it's not a severe message. it wasn't crushing but it was something to let people know that you can't let mess with the united states. china was a currency manipulator. they stopped being a currency manipulator during the election. but accusing china of being a currency manipulator. and using it as a negotiating tool along with bombing syria and showing that we are serious.
2:23 pm
they have done more. then they have done in the past 25 years. it is because we have some in there who knew how to negotiate. and they went forward with strength. the administration has promised of focus on america first. in the recent news syria and iran is threatening the message. will take a look at that question when we come back.

this is a catastrophe that does happen when we build up other countries and set of our own. we take care of everybody else. it is america first now. >> welcome back everybody. america first has been part of president trump's message since the start but our events around the world starting to threaten that. as they deal with the threat of isis and others in the middle east. in the softening in the town towards china.
2:28 pm
we were just talking about whether there were currency manipulator issues. there was a picture of him. what about the question there as he continues let's bring back the audience here. we are so glad to be with all of you. one of the things that the president talked about. talked a lot about china and the campaign trail. he said he was going to label them a currency manipulator on monday one but now he is said that they are not a currency manipulator at least not for now and he likes the coronation that he's getting from them on china. i want to get your thoughts on this. who has thoughts on what we should do on china. tell us your name.
2:29 pm
i am the mayor of a north canton here. when you talk about losing jobs in the city of north canton we lost nearly 3,000 jobs it was devastating to the community when we lost our jobs. jobs is like number one. we want to make sure we keep jobs here. and then they brought that manufactured here. to north canton to only be undercut by cheaper selling models. it's really important in this area. so you would rather that he focus on that the president is in a tough spot. when you're dealing with world issues and you have somebody like that who is so unpredictable and potentially could put a nuclear warhead on a missile that could reach the
2:30 pm
united states do you think that is a more compelling problem how do you choose between one or the other. who wants to chime in on that over here. in terms of china and the reaction and what they are doing. apparently i do. i keep informed with my husband on a lot of these. my concern is that i think trump does had to back check on some of the things that he says at the moment. i think our national security has to trump everything. i do have a side of me that feels like he feels an understanding as a working man he's been out there out on the field doing his business but he does understand people such as us in canton and ohio area.
2:31 pm
the question is is it okay to not say that it's okay to manipulate the currency. i think he is realizing how to prioritize during his presidency. you will come will come back down the road once he stabilizes the national threat that we head over the parties. another thing that the president talked about with regard to foreign policy was that he was was very upset that we have wasted a trillion dollars in the middle east. on the new and then you saw what happened in syria. are you concerned that they might be going down that road. he maybe bring us back into the middle east. it would require a lot more of our resources turn in that direction. >> i am very concerned. i am a big history buff i see that we saw this in the
2:32 pm
2000's. we saw this when we try to replace leadership. with a hard strike. it looks like the iraq war. if we keep going down the path of we are going to bomb syria and do this. it looks very familiar to me from the early 2000's. when he was president of the united states you deal with a lot of issues that you don't necessarily know are you going to land on your plate. they have confronted a more complex world situation than he ever expected. how do you balance those two things. i think the president really doesn't want to get us involved in another war in the middle east. it's important to me that his inclination is that we should not go to war work so if we have to do something like bombing syria because they gas their own people when he does
2:33 pm
something like that i feel better that he's doing it. i am curious what you all think about the approval numbers. we have the pole and they turned out to be wrong pretty much. and they certainly were run on election night. when you look at them and you say that he is the weakest approval rating of any president in recent history do you believe that what you think is going on out there. when you read paul's and you see what they're saying in the media. what is take -- shake your had and say you don't dig it's true. it wasn't true before the election why is it true now. >> what do you think about
2:34 pm
when you listen to the media and you see these polls what do you think is going on out there. if you think that those numbers are not accurate. they don't reflect what you see. it was not true before the election. i don't understand how it's true now. it is true. i could talk to all of my front of the people i work with. no one believes it. what do you think about that. you live in ohio you're a democrat and you listen to this crowd do you feel like you've a good read on what people in your seat are feeling. >> the fact is [applause]. let me explain. hillary clinton did get 3 million more votes the donald trump but the present

one. and now foreign-policy is his responsibility. but let me say this about foreign policy. the house in the senate in the congress had neglected their responsibility when it comes to foreign policy. so the action they took. he was using as that authority and authorization that was passed right after 911. what has happened in this country for several years and the congress is failed to accept their responsibility to be a partner with the president when it comes to foreign policy. and we need a new authorization for military force. so that the house in the senate assumes responsibility.

in hyperbole or exaggeration. i want to get your feel from you have the most accomplished 100 days of any president. the biggest tax cut that anybody has ever seen. is that something you accept as his wife as the art of the deal starting think and big and then working from there or is it something that you think he should be held to task on. >> my name is called when lewis. we call those things hyperbole but ever since i've been there does a been called lies. i believe as the president he nice to say what he plans to do and execute with what he plans to do anyone sitting in this room if we do that. it's just unacceptable.
2:42 pm
especially from the office. do you feel like they have done that before to you. regardless of what they did before what they're doing now. we've an obligation to this country when we say put the country first. i said look at flint michigan. we can talk about all of that great things because we can only speak about what he's done. i'm not totally against the president. i'm a 20 year retired air force member. i was elated to hear about him signing a bill that we cannot get healthcare outside of the va system. i was elated about that. >> it sounds like you're willing to give them a chance but you don't want him to do that. when it came time for being

2:44 pm
focus on let's go to build the wall first. only one person said that was their top priority. why is it more important to you than healthcare or tax reform. >> i believe we have to protect the borders first and get things straightened out. and get all of the people that are legal in the country and then take care of our healthcare. we cannot be protected and covering all of the people that come in here legally. the are not good upstanding citizens. we have to protect america first. so raise your hand if you want to see healthcare repealed and replaced. do not healthcare first.
2:45 pm
a couple of hands over here. who wants to see that tax code simplified and corporate tax codes. that is clearly your first choice. let's get your thoughts on why that is. from an economic standpoint. i think you get them to invest more. i would always like to have a have a little bit of my money back. i look for to that. one of the things that we have seen a lot of in the 100 days is rolling back bureaucracy and trying to cut that size of government. how do people think that that is what they voted for. andy this is something that i knew you were going to do. what do you think when you
2:46 pm
hear people say there hasn't been that much accomplished so far. the 20 pieces of legislation that the president signed it basically went to reduce the size of government. to rollback that regulatory state. but we need to do is we need to generate revenue. we don't need higher taxes we need more tax revenue. and you don't get more tax revenue by taxing the businesses that generate growth. if we can increase it by 1% from the ascetic 2% that we head for the past eight years. you want to raise revenue. people that own them will solve them. we will have more revenue. you can increase revenue by taxing the people that generate income. it just doesn't work.
