9:00 am
>> jon: julie and i will be back in one hour. "outnumbered" starts now. >> harris: on this friday, we start with a fox news alert. president trump is doubling down on his claims that he is a target of a political witch hunt. this comes a day after the justice department appointed a special counsel to investigate russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. the president says that appointment divides americans and he is insisting he never colluded with the kremlin. this is "outnumbered." i'm harris faulkner. here today, meghan mccain, anchor of the intelligence report, trish regan, cohost on "fox & friends" weekend, abby huntsman is here and today's #oneluckyguy, the former governor of the great state of arkansas, mike huckabe
9:01 am
mike huckabee. >> mike: i love it. great to be back, thank you. >> harris: we have lots of guests in studio. you come and people follow you. it's amazing. >> mike: that's great, because they want to see if i'll do something stupid. who knows is going to happen? i may give you one before the day is over, it will go viral, i guarantee you. >> harris: yes, it will. let's start with the news now. we'll begin with president trump not holding back in his criticism of the appointment of a special counsel during a news conference at the white house yesterday. >> i respect it, but the entire thing has been a witch hunt. it the country. we have a very divided country because of that and other things, so i can tell you that we want to bring this great country of ours together. >> harris: amid the allegations of collusion, the
9:02 am
present was adamant and never happen. >> there was no collusion between certainly myself and my campaign, but i can always speak for myself and the russians. zero. even my enemies have said there was no collusion. we want to get back and keep on the track we are on because the track we are on is record-setting. that's what we want to do. >> harris: dianne feinstein, a key democrat on senate intelligence admitted she has not seen any evidence of collusion. >> so far, you've not seen any evidence of collusion, is that right? >> well, evidence that would establish that there is collusion. there are all kinds of rumors around, but that's not necessarily evidence. >> harris: governor, that sound a little strange. can you walk me through that? >> mike: they're saying what they have to say because there isn't any evidence of collusion.
9:03 am
frankly, the president needs to just drop this because until some but he comes up with evidence, there's not a lot. >> harris: he can control his narrative if he wants to buy just not talking. >> mike: he can ignore it, you need to be the happy warrior. he needs to be reagan, not nixon. he needs to be able to show that this is not going to get to him, that it's water off a ducks back, and he's focused on making this foreign trip a great success, cutting taxes, fixing obamacare, and if you want to go out there like maxine waters, who herself said there was no evidence of collusion, if maxine waters can't find it, it ain't there. >> harris: i want to talk about a -- >> is he capable of not talking about it? his advisors are telling him that very thing. they're saying don't talk about this investigation, focus on what the americans care about. is he capable of letting this go? >> mike: i hope so. i want to believe he is because even during the campaign, when
9:04 am
so many things he took personal, when he finally shook it off and he went out there into the rallies, i know there were many of us who said to him, don't talk about what's happening to you because people don't care. talk about happening to them. talk about their lost wages, talk about how life has been fair to them. the system has been unfair to a lot of americans. they identify with that, speak to that and forget about the way the press is treating you. they'll never treat you better. >> harris: was interesting about what you just said, if you focus in on you, we've had presidents who have had assassination attempt, we've had actual assassinations, but if you focus on you and you try to be too much the victim here, the people will recoil from that and say how bad can it be? let's talk about the economy and those numbers. look at the dowel. it was selling off a couple days ago and everyone was look at that shiny object. look at it now.
9:05 am
it's pretty healthy right now. >> trish: investors were worried about the whole idea of a special prosecutor, but once the news broke, they calm down and there's a sense that they will still get their agenda. don't forget, they want -- investors want tax cuts. they want tax reform, they want repeal and replace and they want reduced regulation. these are the things they feel would be meaningful to the economy and will help get americans back to work and will help grow wages and they don't want anyone to lose sight of that. i think the feeling is it still it's going to get done, it may not get done tomorrow, but it will happen. they can take a deep breath. >> harris: i don't know if we can order for a team can pop up what's happening on the market, but it's interesting to look at that. it's coming back because they still anticipate that things will turn around. >> meghan: i think governor huckabee is known for being a
9:06 am
happy warrior. i would love it if you went in and said this is how i do it, this is how i keep a smile on my face. people who are critics of yours political he can say that to you. i just want him to focus on this foreign policy trip coming up, all the places he's going. i know your daughters going. >> harris: i just want to point out the dowel. there's a lot that can be said. >> trish: there are some fundamental economic numbers out there. they're looking better. industrial production numbers that are looking better. i talked to business owners all the time. they feel like there's a someone in office that understands how difficult it is to run a business. a >> abby: you know that by listening to most of the media.
9:07 am
it seems like things are a total disaster and the frustration that a lot of people have is the questions of the media are asking. yesterday had that press conference with the president of columbia. they were on this russian investigation. >> meghan: they take president trump's wing as an x essential crisis. for day one, they been calling for him to be impeached. he came on and so there's no collusion with russia whatsoever. if he has a special prosecutor, doesn't matter? according to him and if you believe him, at this point, i have no reason not to believe, there is no problem here. the left is going to take this to an extreme. why i do like the victim aspect of this is that's what democrats do. they're the victims. we don't sit here, we call people out out of being snowfl. i don't like victims. focusing on the foreign policy trip is what we should focus on. >> mike: this whole
9:08 am
investigation is a gift for this reason. every time i ask him a question about russia, every time they ask, he simply can say, i would love to answer that, but this is under investigation and we can't talk about it. let me tell you what happened in the economy today, let me tell you about the dow, let me tell you about the jobs. pivot, move on. he has a great reason to never answer another question about what the special counsel is about. >> harris: great messaging advice. he also can turn and talk about foreign policy. deputy attorney general, rod rosenstein, back on the hot seat today briefing house lawmakers on the firing of fbi director james comey. in his opening statement, the deputy ag was very clear that he did know the president's plan to fire director comey before he wrote a memo recommending his dismissal. the white house initially used that memo to justify president trump's decision to fire the 13, but later backed up
9:09 am
that assertion with the president said the decision was his alone. yesterday, the president once again pointing to rosenstein's recommendation. watch. >> director comey was very unpopular with most people. i actually thought when i made that decision, and i also got a very, very strong recommendation, as you know, from the deputy attorney genera attorney general, rod rosenstei rosenstein. >> harris: your thoughts? >> meghan: i said this this week, this is like an episode of house of cards. there are too many players. president trump made an executive decision to fire james comey. i was calling for him to be fired, i had by partisans calling for it for a long time. i would also like to point out that these james comey memos, if president trump is a saying layoff general flame, can you hold off? why didn't james comey say something the moment it happene happened? that's the question right now. he will only say something now that he's been fired.
9:10 am
there's a lot of politics at play. >> harris: the reason legally why that's so important that he didn't speak up is because he had a fiduciary and a legal responsibility to say that somebody, the president or anybody is trying to interfere with an investigation. that's his responsibility anyway. if he felt it wasn't all that important, wouldn't he have said that russian mark and takes it off the table for democrats. >> mike: on the one hand, if he didn't take it as a personal threat, he cannot come back and say i do now, but i didn't then. the other option is yes i did, but i didn't tell anybody. that's a felony. for a felony office -- for a law officer to know a crime and not reported, that is a crime. i think trump probably said something like anybody would have said. mike flynn is a good guy, comey didn't take it that it was a threat at his job.
9:11 am
the big mistake if there was one that the president made, he should have fired him. that was a given, but he should have just said, i replaced the fbi director. i thank him for his service and not set another word about it. that's it. >> meghan: what about the selective leaking that's coming out from comey loyalists that won't stop anytime soon? >> abby: may be loyalists within the white house. president trump keeps alluding that the biggest probably face of these leaks. i agree. that risks our national security. when you link things to "the washington post," that goes to the entire world. i'm very concerned. i don't know how they get to the bottom. >> harris: we've got a lot of people on the job that could do that. why hasn't the memo leaked? >> trish: good question. "the new york times" only got a portion of that memo. we probably saw the worst of a memo.
9:12 am
i think donald trump in this particular case, his timing was aloft, maybe he should have done this earlier. you have to look at it and say if he did think that there was any real collusion between his campaign, he was worried about that and comey stumbled upon something, he probably wouldn't have fired him because in its too obvious. i think for him being a little ceo light, not thinking about the ramifications. things aren't really working out, he had to get rid of him, and all of a sudden, you're dealing with this backlash right now that he did not entirely anticipate. >> harris: successful business owners tell me that if you have someone to fire, you do it right away. >> mike: that's very true. it is true in government as
9:13 am

the speed at fox news alert. it president trump at the opportunity to change the narrative as he prepares to embark on his first international trip this afternoon. he is putting to tackle a wide range of issues from middle east peace to the fight against isis. the ambitious nine day visit includes saudi arabia, israel, brussels, and italy. a charming master called the president's agenda unprecedente unprecedented. >> this trip is truly historic. no president has ever visited the holy sites of the jewish, christian, and muslim faiths, all on one trip. what president trump is seeking is to unite peoples of all faiths around a common vision of peace, progress, and prosperity. >> meghan: the president tweeting earlier today, getting ready for my big foreign trip. will be strongly protecting
9:18 am
american interests, that's what i like to do. governor, i fully support president trump's foreign policy agenda, i have for a long time. it's a major thing i can point to, how important is this trip? a >> mike: it's hugely important because he is going to these three centers of religion. in doing so, he is recognized that the world's problems are not all economic, military, and sociopolitical, some of them are theological. if you don't recognize that, you can't solve them. for example, if you want to talk about middle east peace, there's no way to discuss that without understanding the real heart and soul of the conflict is theological. it isn't geographical. it's not about land. this goes back to abraham. this is whether you believe it the promise was given through isaac or ishmael. unless you can settle that, you
9:19 am
won't settle the boundaries. for him to go to these three capitals, and at least sets the big picture. ed's not going to be resolved, but some progress will be made. >> meghan: the big question is can he reset the narrative? it's been a rocky week, can he get his successes going forward? >> harris: here's a question i would like to know, how his approach is inherently different than the last eight, ten, 12 years from people who sat across from these same leaders? >> mike: the first thing, he believes american's role should be largely one of a diplomatic leadership, not necessarily military intervention. he recognizes that america has to lead from the front, not from behind. that's huge. secondly, if america makes a commitment, it will keep it. if we say we are going to do something, we'll do it. if something attacks us come out wheeled to attack back. we won't pretend that there is some kind of cross acts.
9:20 am
we won't let it go. that's why you saw the mother of all bombs hitting afghanistan. that was a message and it was a strong message, and i think the president was right to send it. the >> abby: this might be the first time a president, his first foreign trip is going to be to the three major religions of the world. it's going to be in saudi arabia, israel, and the vatican. there is no better time and opportunity to take back control of this narrative and really talk about those differences in your foreign policy. that is one of the things the people care so much about. i will be texas opportunity and do something with it. >> trish: the isolation policy from the last eight years, it didn't work. there was a lot of hype, a lot of expectations. we had really been through a lot and people were not happy with how things unfolded. there was a retreat. the pendulum is swinging the other way and suddenly, we
9:21 am
abandoned who we are. we have historically been the biggest power in the world. we said to heck with out under president obama, we abandoned that, and now there's an opportunity to set things right. the world needs us. they need us there, helping to police all the challenges. without us, it's a vacuum. >> harris: the other thing that's different about this president, i go beyond, this is also in recent memory, the president has fought so hard for religious freedom. he's fought that battle and it's been really should be. he stood in there. >> mike: he once again is showing leadership. donald trump doesn't care whether foreign leaders love him and that's an important thing for a leader. what he wants is for people to respect him. he doesn't care if they fear him, that's a good thing.
9:22 am
he doesn't care if they love him. america is in a place where we have to have people who are just concerned enough to say what if america ever used its power? with donald trump, they're not sure. with barack obama, they knew he would never do anything. >> harris: he kept taking it off the table. >> mike: if you tell your enemy what you're not going to do, you are surrendering before the battle even starts. >> meghan: he sent the message and syria. we have to move on. president trump is heading back hard against reports that he pressured then fbi director, james comey to drop the michael flynn investigation. this is we learn the russia probe is reaching a new level. more on that, plus the president says joe lieberman is one of his top picks for the fbi. the longtime democrat turned independent might be expected to get bipartisan support, but democrats are already crying foul. we can't stay here!

>> harris: democrats love to talk with the word impeachment. let's get into it. president trump is denying that he asked then fbi director, james comey to end the michael flynn investigation. comey wrote a memo saying he did just that. the president is going on for suggestions of criminal charges and impeachment talk during a news conference. it happened yesterday. watch. >> did you at any time urge a former fbi director, james comey, and any way, shape, or form to back down investigational michael flynn and also -- >> no. no. next question. >> have you had any recollection where you wondered if anything you have done has been something that may be worthy of criminal charges? >> i think is totally ridiculous, i really think so. we have to get back to working

our country properly so we can take care of the problems that we have. we have plenty of problems. >> harris: that was on the left, but that was interesting. as senator lindsey graham after being briefed by deputy attorney general, rod rosenstein yesterday says the russia investigation is now reaching a new level. watch. >> it was a counterintelligence investigation before now. it seems to me to be considered a criminal investigation. the deputy attorney general decided to appoint a special counsel. he's deciding to call people who may be witnesses. >> harris: "the new york times" is reporting the newly appointed special counsel, robert mueller will urge lawmakers to step back. that means the scope of the six congressional investigations currently underway will likely narrow. six. six investigations and there is
9:29 am
no evidence. >> mike: this gives donald trump a great out to save you won't get these committees, which are nothing but show. those committees are not serious attempts, they're trying to get people to posture before the camera and make outrageous statements. in a way, this is good, but this nonsense talk. that reporter, god bless him. what a stupid question he asked. he asked the president, do you think there's anything you've done that could rise to criminal level? what is the president supposed to say? yeah, i've done a bunch of criminal stuff. why do people ever get jobs as reporters who have the iq of broccoli? i'm sorry, but that is it so ridiculous. >> abby: isn't in your job as a reporter to ask questions that your audience wants an answer to? if you ask the majority of people out there, how much you care about russia, i think they're over it. we followed this every single
9:30 am
day. we have a hard time keeping up with what's going on. >> meghan: the average american -- they care more about repeal and replace, keeping americans safe, terrorism, et cetera et cetera. my question for you, and the short-term, and agree with you that this is great for president trump. the concern i would have for people who have already been accused and admitted to having some ties to russia, is there any fear here that someone will get liberties? >> mike: that's always a fear. let's give context to the audience. there was a scapegoat and investigation a guy out of control. the one thing we can hope for with robert mueller is that he's not the kind of guy historically that would try to see how long he can take this investigation, how much money can spend, how many people we can hire, i think he'll go, try to get it done, be over with it and if he doesn't find anything, he'll pull the plug. >> meghan: the historical
9:31 am
precedents that's set in this -- >> harris: those people that you mentioned will have to lawyer up. there is always danger of an open door, someone who'll say something they were anticipatin anticipating. >> trish: robert mueller is not the kind of guy who will look in places that are not relevant. >> harris: he will be able to talk about it anyway. it has to be specific to what he finds. i think the america people do care about there being evidence. >> trish: they don't like the idea of russia potentially. the frustrating thing is we don't know what happen. it's all innuendo.
9:32 am
it's all a little bit here, a little bit there. you may be a little concerned, but you're also concerned about putting food on the table. >> meghan: >> abby: as we've al, there is no smoking gun here. there is no link to actual evidence to whether president trump had any collusion with the russians. up until now, there isn't. that's when the frustration comes in. how much bandwidth can there be a question or can we start talking about things that impact my life every day? >> harris: answer a question for people on the left. >> trish: president trump says he is very close to picking a new fbi director, confirming one of the leading candidates for the job is former independent connecticut senator, joe lieberman. >> we are very close to an fbi director.
9:33 am
>> trish: republicans including peter king seemed to be on board with the idea. watch. >> joe lieberman to me as a patriot. there is no one and politics or government have more respect for than joe lieberman. he is a great friend, but more than that, a great american. he's got integrity, strong as can be and is totally independent. i say he's a good friend, i wouldn't even think or suggest to him anything that was at all and proper. this guy is as honest as can be. >> trish: quite an endorsement. the drunkards are saying that the head of the fbi should be someone apolitical who has a law enforcement background. >> i think that the political part of this is not the best part for the fbi. i think the fbi has to have someone that every member of
9:34 am
that agency respects because they know they're not going to count the political winds and they know that they are talented and doing the law enforcement job. >> trish: lieberman was connecticut's attorney general for 6 years before here was first elected to the senate back in 1988. he was also a democrat and he was al gore's running mate in 2000. he later became an independent and he endorsed john mccain back in 2008. he's been on both sides of the aisle. by most accounts, he's pretty independent and an ethical guy. what's your impression of joe lieberman and would he be good at the fbi job? >> mike: i love him. as a human being and as a person. everything that's said about him in terms of being honorable and a man of impeccable integrity, absolutely ironclad. i find it interesting that the democrats are already -- this is not spontaneous on their part. they come out and say we wants a buddy who's not political.
9:35 am
i heard dianne feinstein, joe mansion, they're all saying it. that's scripted. that's what they've been told to say. they're in a tough spot. if joe lieberman is the guy, how do they say we don't want one of our own senators that was second on our ballot in 2000? we don't want him to be the fbi director? >> harris: i had a stocking case in kansas city, missouri, and she was a prosecutor at the time and made a great difference in that case and for my safety. i think it's a bit credible for her to have that background and not know you can wear two hats. >> abby: i don't know if you'lld clean people. what you want, is the ability to do your job objectively without making statements, without being on twitter. i'm a little curious from the left where that criticism is coming from. it seems particularly from
9:36 am
claire mikal stole not to see the potential of a guy like joe lieberman. >> mike: he doesn't give them what they want which is someone's head on a platter. how can they complain? is joe lieberman for heaven sakes. >> abby: he brings you the votes. you can likely get the votes for joe. he brings you integrity, he brings you -- i don't know what else you're looking for. he'll be able to get the votes, i think the president would be smart to pick someone like joe lieberman. you mentioned joe mansion. he would see a situation like this and say this is a smart choice and it does remind you how much politics are at play here and how frustrating that i is. >> trish: is to resist just their m.o.? >> meghan: at there's a zombie apocalypse happening, i want to lieberman and my van. i cannot say enough positive things. he's one of the true decent human beings i've met and
9:37 am
politics. his character across the board, i would trust and a zombie apocalypse. secondly, the thing i don't understand, the pushback, is that if it's not elizabeth warren for every position possible, it's never good enough for the left. they're so extreme, they can't even see someone who by all accounts is completely bipartisan, can see all sides of the issue. by the way, to his detriment, he got a lot of from a lot of people for being so open-minded. for someone who is a truly decent moral human being is a good enough for the left, i don't know who is. >> harris: that would be my question. who is? what do they want? >> trish: elizabeth warren. >> harris: she doesn't have that prosecutorial background. >> abby: we should pray to people like joe lieberman.
9:38 am
>> harris: meanwhile, could we see changes of the white house press shop? the big moves that could soon happen and why. this is president trump wants to bring a former key member of his campaign back into the fold. stay close lstate. if you total your new bike, they replace it with a brand new one. that's cool. i got a new helmet. we know steve. it's good to be in (good hands). a 10-speed direct-shift 5.0transmission.ine. a meticulously crafted interior. all of these are feats of engineering. combining them with near-perfect weight distribution...
