>> jon: president trump just left on his first foreign tour. be -- the president and the first lady boarded air force one this morning. president trump tweeted "getting ready for my big foreign trip. will be strongly protecting american interests. that's what i like to do." the president's first stop, saudi arabia before heading to israel. he's scheduled to visit the pope at the vatican, attend another meeting of world leaders in sicily. the white house and foreign officials have gone to great lengths to accommodate the president and his busy itinerary. details ahead. in washington, lawmakers are defending answers after the president fired james comey and the justice department appointed a special counsel to oversee the bureau's investigation into the trump ties to russia. the president admitted the

investigation was on his mind when he decided to fire comey. the move has sparked a back and forth between the president and people close to comey over conversations president trump and the fbi director had in the weeks after the inauguration. more on that lawyer. secretary of state rex tillerson said yet, folks in the rest of the world do not have time to worry about american domestic issues. we have team fox coverage. benjamin hall is live in the saudi capitol of riyadh. first to rich edson live at the state department. rich, administration officials say these controversies will not follow the president overseas. >> jon, that's what they're maintaining. they're down playing what's happening here in the united states will follow the president on his first trip. he will be speaking and addressing and negotiates with muslims, israelis, nato and the pope. while officials maintain he's leaving these controversies here, he's bringing a large contingent of the family over.

first lady and melania trump and his daughter and son-in-law, ivanka trump and jared kushner. we asked the secretary of state ahead of the trip whether the domestic issues will follow the president. he says no. >> i think the people in the rest of the world don't have the time to pay attention to what is happening domestically here. they're more concerned about what they see happening with their country and what we're bringing to address these serious challenges affects all of us. >> tillerson went on to sale that leaders in middle east and africa are looking for an engagement of the united states which he said was an outright dismissal and neglect from the obama administration, john. >> jon: observers are saying the president might need to use this trip to smooth over relationships? >> the second stop on the trip, israel and jerusalem, you'll remember the president promised he would move the united states embassy from tel aviv to

jerusalem, a controversial move as both claimed as their capitol. that promise is unfulfilled. last week, the president shared israeli-sourced intelligence with sergey lavrov in their meeting in the oval office. there were reports out of jerusalem that some officials were saying that perhaps they had to reconsider the intelligence relationship with the united states. however, the israeli ambassador to the united states says that israel has full confidence in our intelligence sharing relationship with the united states, also the national security adviser, h.r. mcmaster said that was wholly appropriate. the president will meet with the pope. the president and the pope seemed to disagree over building a wall on the u.s.-mexico border. the president then heads to nato and the president has called on nato allies to spend more money on their defense, jon. >> jon: we're told some of these overseas leaders are getting advice on how to interact with

the president? >> a good bit of advice for officials looking on how to treat the president, speak with the president. this is according to "the new york times." a set of general goodlines. those addressing the president should congratulate him on his election victory and they should bring with them some type of deal to agree upon so there's a victory. also, the associated press is reporting that during this meeting the president to -- is known to not travel as internationally and certainly not as much as his wife, melania. he built some time into the schedule and officials on the local parts of the trip where they offer local cuisine to also offer the president's favorite meal which would be steak and ketchup. >> thanks, rich. >> jon: benjamin hall live in riyadh. the white house is finalizing a massive arms deal with the

saudis. >> yeah, that's right, jon. first and foremost, one of the main reasons is to rebuild the relationship between saudi arabia and the u.s. there's no secret under the obama administration the u.s. turned their back on saudi arabia, reaching out to iran in the deal. one of the major things president trump will be doing here, signing a new major arms deal said to be worth well over $100 billion. we're hearing this is so important that jared kushner, the son-in-law of president trump himself made a phone call to the ceo of lockheed and asked if he could lower the price of a radar system. that's key so the saudis could get that in the deal. so many other issues to discuss, not the least counter terrorism deal. saudi arabia is the second largest partner against the bombing raid in syria and intelligence sharing. a lot of issues to talk about. keenly awaited here in saudi arabia. john?

>> despite some of the president's past comments, the saudis are rolling out the red carpet here. >> that's right, jon. you only have to look around riyadh to see the extend to which he will be welcomed. there's u.s. flags up and down the avenues, president's of president trump alongside king salmon. he's here to meet the king and also a speech on islam to 50 leaders of muslim countries around the world. you'll remember the things he said in the election campaign referring to radical islamic terrorism. it's interesting to see how he will play that here or if he moves away from it or addresses it head on. we managed to speak to the foreign minister. he said none of that will get in the way of the visit. they were optimistic. here's what he said. >> his world view is wanting to restore america's role in the world and we support that. he wants to defeat isis and we will work with him on that as we do right now.

i think the president thought that this, because it is so unusual, would make even more of a statement about it. >> jon: there's obviously lots of domestic and foreign issues bedevilling this white house right now. can the president escape that by escaping over seas? >> no, he can't escape it. there will continue to be controversies and leaks. the president can help himself with a little more discipline. here's what i mean. he could take advantage of the appointment of a special counsel if he wanted to and as presidents in the past have to say -- and have his aides say we're not going to talk about this anymore. it's under investigation. the special counsel is looking into this. we're going to focus on issues that affect people's lives in america like healthcare, tax reform, trade. but this president has not seen capable of doing that. when the announcement came of

the special counsel, the president's first reaction, the written statement was that he was looking forward to the investigation being conducted and ended quickly. but then the next morning he put out a tweet that said it was all a witch hunt, all dividing the country and he doubled down on that throughout yesterday with a number of statements in public basically saying the same thing, that this was dividing america and it was bad. he's going to be asked about it on the foreign trip. presidents always are. the question is does he respond by focusing on the trip and focusing on his agenda or does he get drawn in to more conversations about a controversy and an investigation which distracts from what he wants to accomplish as president. >> president obama seemed very interested in improving relations with iran. president trump does not seem to have that interest. this arms sale, the largest arms sale ever, assuming it goes

through to saudi arabia proves that point. >> i'll tell you the white house feels and from what i'm hearing the saudis and other sunni arabs feel that this is a huge change and this this president will be accepted much more favorably in the arab world than president obama. for all of the comments he made about muslims in the campaign trail, that they see him as a much better partner dealing with part of it is exactly what you said, that they thought a lot of the arabs thought that president obama was too interested in trying to make a deal and then trying to have a deal with iran, who is a shiite arab country that they don't like very much and also they were not happy with the way he handled the arab spring where he was on the side of the people in the street and not the people in the government like hosni mubarak and other

authoritarian figures. so they see this president as a welcome relief from the obama years. >> jon: richard haas, former state department official, is saying he would advise president trump not to take on such a big trip for his first one. maybe taking baby steps would have been better. your thoughts on that? >> look, you know, i don't know that that is necessarily true. it's not overly ambitious. it's about a week, nine days. i will say the first part is a part that i find interesting. the second half, he meets with nato, meets with the g-7. i don't think you'll see any dramatic changes there. the first three stops, to go on the first three stops of a foreign trip as president to riyadh, the home of islam, to jerusalem, the home of of the

detail and that brought him just a single charge of transferring obscene material to a minor. wiener started crying five words in according to our producener the courtroom into this statement in which he admitted to engaging in an obscene communication with the 15-year-old girl and sharing explicit i'm my knowledges and ask her to engage in sexually explicit conduct, which he said he knew was morally wrong and unlawful. he continued through tears reading a statement that ended like this "i accept full responsibility for my conduct. i have a sickness but i don't have an excuse. i apologize to the girl i mistreated so badly. i am committed to make amends to all that i harmed. thank you." this alleged investigation to the teen is what sparked the conversations with james comey that the bureau was looking to more e-mails sent from candidate

>> jon: breaking news. we just learned of two major bomb shells in the russia investigati investigation. first involves trump's u.s. ambassador to the white house this month. the two russians spoke with president trump in the oval office in the day after he fired james comey. "the new york times" reports the president told foreign minister sergey lavrov and sergei kisl k kislyak, i just fired the head of the fbi. he was crazy and a nut job and i faced great pressure because of russia. that is taken off. the white house says comey's investigation created

unnecessary pressure on u.s.-russian relations. the white house is also not denying the report from "the washington post" that investigators in the russia case have identified a current senior white house official as a significant person of interest. kevin corke live at the white house with more. kevin? >> john, very interest oh, my gosh. i had a conversation with a white house official not long ago. it was interesting the way she put it. she said don't you find it interesting that the times and the post release these stories after the president took off for his trip overseas? making the insinuation that this is a coordinated attack on this white house, the likes of which we have seen for quite some time. they are however not denying or at least on the record denying the substance of either report, but they are releasing statements. let me just share part of what sean spicer had to say about "the washington post" story. the suggestion that the russia probe is now involving current white house officials at the

highest level of government. spicer saying in this, and i quote, "as the president has stated before, a thorough investigation will confirm there was no collusion between the campaign and any foreign entity." i have said that all day long based on my conversations with the white house officials and they continue to say as much as well." "the new york times" story is an interesting one. it effectively, if you listen to the white house, violates the law. we're talking about a conversation that has been disclosed to the public. let's share what sean spicer had to say about "the new york times" reporting of that conversation that you just laid out in the oval office. again, i'm quoting now. the president has always emphasized the importance of making deals with russia, syria, ukraine and it isis for the safety and the benefits of the american people. by grandstanding the investigation into russia's actions, james comey created unnecessary pressure on our ability to engage and negotiate

respond? >> the white house should respond by saying we do not respond to questions of speculation that has no basis and fact at present. what they should do is talk about the president's trip and focus on that. they're going to be having a lot more of these stories coming out and they can't give them any bit of oxygen. it will hurt them more. >> jon: they have already confirmed at least "the new york times" report suggesting that the president told those russian visitors that he fired james comey because he was a nut job. >> yes. what they shouldn't be doing is attacking leakers. leakers are a good thing. leakers showed that the obama administration was spying on james rosen of fox news channel and the obama administration was using irs to target conservative groups. so what they should do, stop speaker and let a lawyer vet every statement because they're in serious trump right now.

>> jon: christy, the trump administration is saying with the ambassador and the foreign minister, they were hoping to get better behavior from russia. >> yeah. that doesn't pass the last test. in a way that you know that they can't get their stories straight here, all you have to do is listen to what sean spicer says and go read president trump's tweets. that's a pretty good window into how he is actually feeling. if they really wanted the investigatue, president trump wouldn't take to twitter and say this whole investigation is a witch hunt. if they just wanted to improve relations with russia, then he wouldn't be telling them that i fired my fbi director because putting too much pressure on me. the president doesn't seem to understand that what he's confessing to is a crime. either he doesn't understand that or there's something else going on. i don't know. >> jon: why would it be a crime? the president has full power to fire the fbi director if he

wants to. >> he doesn't have the power to fire him because the fbi director was looking into whether or not the president had committed a crime, which is what all the reporting seems to be about right now. it's clear that's in fact that's why he fired him. he will tell you himself, president trump has said it multiple times in multiple arenas, the reason he fired comey is because of russia. >> jon: but he's said there was no collusion 2001 the russians and his campaign. and that, you know, james comey was looking for fire where there was none. >> i would tend to believe that james comey, if he was doing the investigation as thoroughly as possible and the president can protest as much as possible, but it doesn't change the reality. the president has lost credibility. that's why we understand our legislative agenda is completely derailed. the president is facing potential obstruction of justice charges depending what comes out. that's a huge problem.

lastly with what was reported in the president telling the russians in the meeting in which he divulged highly classified intelligence that we don't share with our closest alleys, that james comey was a nut job and he faced great pressure but that's taken off now. that's a huge problem for this president who seems to not understand the role of the executive in the constitution. >> jon: christy and evan, stay with us. a man who says he is friends with james comey going on record about the former fbi director's troubled relationship with president trump. benjamin whittis is from the brookings institute. here he was with coney in 2015. he said he had multiple conversations with comey about president and learned that comey wanted to maintain the fbi's independence but was frustrated at the president's attempts to win him over. he said comey was disgusted in

one visit to the white house. >> if you watch the video, he's wearing a blue blazer. he stands in the parts of the room that is as far from trump that is physically possible to be and also against blue drapes that are the same color -- >> he chose that spot? >> he chose that spot. he extends his hands. comey's arms are really long. he extends his hands prei'miv y prei'mively -- preemptively and trull pulls him in. hug is one-sided. one guy is shaking hands and the other guy is hugging. >> jon: the white house is denying that trump asked for comey's loyalty. comey said he was skeptical of rod rosenstein that was back on capitol hill to meet with house lawmakers a day after he met with members of the senate. rosenstein briefing congress on comey's firing, the russian investigation and the special

appointment of robert mueller to oversee that investigation. peter doocy with more. what was the reaction to the deputy attorney general today? >> jon, at one point, he was so well-received, members of both parties clapped for him. >> whether or not there were crimes committed, the fact is there's a serious issue involving russia and the american people should know that. >> and people clapped? >> they clapped. >> some members of congress say that they left that meeting and their thoughts about everything, the timeline, the russian investigation were more muddled. we know not a lot of classified information was discussed at the meeting, which was in a large auditorium beneath the grounds of the capitol complex. the majority leader, kevin mccarthy said is when rosenstein said nobody he talked to can remember comey asking for additional russia resources. back to you. >> jon: what about the democrats? what are they saying, peter?

>> the democrats are saying they're not really that happy with the presentation today. the house democratic leader, nancy pelosi and others are basically dismayed by rosenstein defending the memo that he wrote that the president used as cover to give comey a pink slip. so rosenstein said in the opening remarks, he said i sent my signed memorandum. i wrote it, i believe it, i stand by it. that's the line that the democrats said they really didn't like. >> he made some very bold statements about his memo. then immediately refused to take questions concerning the memo he just spoke about. i thought that was totally inappropriate. >> i came out more sure that it was absolutely essential that we have this outside independent commission. >> we also have no information

that anybody involved with any of the congressional russian probes plan to drop it even though there's this high profile special counsel looking into it. jon? >> jon: thanks, peter. back with us, christy and evan. christy, the impeachment talk seems to have died down among democrats. it was raging earlier this week with one texas congressman going to the house floor to talk about it. do democrats really want that and the paralysis that it could bring the united states government? >> i think they want to see a process play out. i think you saw people on both sides of the aisle pleased that mueller was named a special prosecutor. obviously he has a lot of credibility with republicans and with democrats. i don't think that that means that members of congress would abdicate the responsibility to provide a check on the president either. but the reason why you've seen the impeachment talk die down a

little bit is because it at least it feels like things are happening. there are people, if not always members of congress that are sort of willing to follow the facts where they may lead. at the same time, you have a number of these unforced errors from the president like we just saw within the last hour where he seems to be incriminating himself. so i think there's an ability for democrats to sit back and take a deep breath and watch this all unfold right now. >> jon: evan, what about republicans? are they in the president's corner or are they sitting back? >> republicans are trying to straddle both worlds right now. they don't really want to go out and defend the president's conduct, especially related to the james comey firing, with what information is coming out. at the same time, they do want to say we want to wait and let the investigation play out. they don't want to injure themselves politically. the base still loves president

trump and many are calling it an attempted coup. we have to remember that every one -- if we weren't here today, if president trump had done three things. one, not hired michael flynn, two, hired james comey when he took off and three, don't tweet crazy things. >> jon: christy, can the president escape this in the next eight days over seas? >> sure. obviously there will be news that is about his foreign trip. that changes the conversation somewhat. at the same time, you're seeing -- again, these investigation moving forward, new drip drip drips again every hour. so you're going to have to see the press dividing their attention on what he's doing overseas. >> jon: we'll be watching. christy and evan, thank you both. >> thank you. >> ahead, chinese fighter jets
