first day which is very say ceremonial. show of friendship, rebuilding the relationship, very ceremonial starting this morning with all important handshake at the bottom of the stairs and moving on from that to the coffee ceremony. that of course is very symbolic. that's what we would expect in first few days. very nice chitchat back and forth. we heard president trump comment on how beautiful the room was. starting to rebuild the relationship between the two leaders. that's how you would expect this to start. as we move on, start to see. so really big meetings take place and hear something big in this signing ceremony coming up now. because this is so multi-faceted. of course, one of the major issues here is the anti-isis coalition. that's one of the reasons that this bond needs to be so strong at the moment. saudi arabia, of course, being the second largest partner in the bombing raids against isis in syria. so, and we are going to be discussing that. we will see president trump visit command and control center tomorrow from where those planes take off.
5:59 am
but, also, they are going to be looking at the economic developments and 110 billion-dollar deal is what we're hearing about at the moment. an arms deal. remember bake in 2016 president obama actually put on hold some of the arms deals and that was just some of the straw that broke the camel's back as far as the relationship between the two countries went. that's one of the major issues that we're going to see here as they rebuild this relationship. but, we know tomorrow as well the high point of this in saudi arabia is going to be the speech. that's where he is going to come out and president trump will have to be a little bit tough there because we know he is talking about islam. general mcmaster told us that speech tomorrow he is giving to 50 muslim leaders around the world will be inspiring but also be decisive. he is going to make a very clear point that they need to bring all kin tries in the region need to preach a more tolerant version of islam. that's been the problem. they are going to say if you want to work with us you need to work with us across the board. economic, military, defense, terrorism.

usurping the religion of islam, those like iran see them patrolling an entire region going back to persian history, and saudi arabia one of the largest purchasers of arms in the world, magnificent deal. for me economically the other things that will happen, saudi arabia shifting away from oil. in 2012 we had $30 billion deficit in saudi arabia. last year we had a $1 billion surplus. their purchasing power, they have a lot of money and got to make transition not like what is happening in the united arab emirates, dubai, they need american expertise, american corporations to do that, banking and tourist area, tourists don't go when bonds are blowing up. it is unfortunate donald trump won't look at their wall.

other things are under discussion, what we deployed to south korea. this is a broader realignment and the president going to is real to sign a broader deal. to defend themselves against hamas and hezbollah and are most advanced joint strike fighters, getting more of, that alignment where they were more worried about iran than each other which we have seen in the past. >> what do you expect to hear from the president in this meeting, we want saudi arabia to step up more in this fight, there needs to be more pressure put on isis and radical islam from saudi arabia, something he hyped on during the campaign, america can't shoulder the
6:29 am
burden alone. how much will be part of this? >> this is a historic trip for donald trump but what it was intended and the controversy in the un, regarding alleged tied to russia. arabs are famous for greeting guests with pomp and circumstance, being gracious and you see that in the footage they are showing. for donald trump and his administration, he is serving as some coffee and a beautiful room in a circle and telling you what you think you want to hear and not what they are inc.. attending meetings this week he worried what is happening with donald trump at home is distracting from the message. the message is supposed to be that the us will take leadership in fighting isis on broader
6:30 am
efforts to fight islamic extremism and the us is going to pivot towards the arab gulf country allies away from iran to iraq. the leaders will be meeting with were wondering if this president has the strength and support back home to deliver on policy changes. >> the white house statement on the saudi arms deal had is "happening now". this package of defense equipment and service support the long-term security of saudi arabia, bolstering the kingdom's ability to counterterrorism operations reducing burden on the us military to discuss this the package demonstrating the clearest terms possible the united states commitment to saudi arabia and gulf partners, this does seem like a recent button.
6:31 am
for these nations. >> what president obama set out to do in these terms pushing iran back, in the obama administration, focusing on the nuclear program narrowly and a lot of the prohibitions on missile testing to the iran deal itself, the iranians have been testing ballistic missiles and one of the things secretary matus said when he was a general is he is worried about the iran deal because it would empower the iranians and there would be a cascade of missiles that would upset the balance in the rest of the world. the weapons programs out of this deal have to do with pushing iran back and empowering our arab allies to protect themselves and that is where you will see missile defense systems talked about as well. this is doing cleanup and a reset, get back in the middle
6:32 am
east. >> how does he ran react to this? a big part of the statement is the white house became an embargoed talking about reducing the burden of the us military to conduct these operations. how much of this is about backing away you >> you are seeing the broader theme, the green beret community, we cannot tackle this global scourge of islamic extremism stretching from the philippines to north and the middle east by ourselves, you are not going to see hundreds of thousands of american boots on the ground in the middle east going forward. we have to do this through surrogates whether it is the kurds or partner nations and that means building the capacity and capability of the saudi, afghan and other nationstate
6:33 am
military forces. you have to do that through weapons sales and you want those tied in and capable and able to link in with the united states and training and advising and assisting. you need to see that looking forward, a big part of what donald trump is going to announce at nato. what most folks expect to see 3000 more american troops to go into afghanistan in a supporting role. not kicking in doors and pulling triggers advising or assisting the afghan army. the common thread going forward. >> the shift away from oil in saudi arabia. a trade surplus shifted from years ago where we were billions in debt to saudi arabia, not shifted in our favor, they need to move away from oil, part of the package is unique opportunities for us companies
6:34 am
to expand into that region, it is incredibly important for this region. what do you see from that side of the story? >> not just saudi arabia, and diverse i the economy. saudi arabia the biggest producer of oil, most come from oil at 12 million barrels per day and oil is at issue for saudi arabia, but donald trump going to the middle east trying to strike deals and help american companies and advocate for american companies in these important markets, an important part of what the president needs to do and the secretary of commerce needs to embrace the effort to advocate for companies in the middle east. there is a great market, how much revenue comes in in a country like saudi arabia and

of staff to george w. bush and friend of our show, karl rove. nice to see you this morning. we want your take on what is unfolding behind the scenes. we had corey lewandowski on earlier. what is unfolding while the president is in saudi arabia? what needs to happen with these leaks coming out of the inner circle of the white house? >> two kinds of leaks. the oval office conversation with the russians may not have happened within the white house, this document was circulated in the intelligence community and absolutely at the top levels of the state department. maybe there is a career person at the national security council or the state department or the intelligence community that took it upon themselves, not necessarily thinking it came
6:40 am
from the president's immediate staff. could have come from outside the white house but there are lots of leaks in the white house. i read one article in the washington post two weeks ago, happened to be having dinner with a couple people. they are coming from inside. there were 11 quotes trashing other members of the white house staff from nine members of the white house staff, all of them unnamed. there is a lot of this and the president has to set the tone. i don't think he should coming and indiscriminately fire people. he has to identify somebody who leaked and say that person is gone but he has to inspire his people in the west wing to do their best. most of their shots are not aimed at him but at each other. they don't seem to understand that diminishes him for them to be trashing, been in people
6:41 am
trashing priebus people, been in people attack cohen, democrats, national economic council, they are serving their private interests. >> unfortunate what we are seeing play out. you have been following this trip in saudi arabia, first international trip visiting the major religions of the world. then going to israel and vatican, how important strategically was the first trip he is making to saudi arabia. >> i give credit to hr mcmaster and tillerson and his people in recognizing the structure, the president was smart to go to saudi arabia. this is one of the linchpins of the situation in the middle east, israel and saudi arabia
6:42 am
are longtime allies in israel and great longtime ally in saudi arabia with both of them over the last eight years -- i had a remarkable meeting with a saudi who said at the end of this conversation congratulations, you achieved the unachievable in the middle east, you convinced saudi arabia and the state of israel that you are an unreliable ally. donald trump is in a place where by saying to the saudis you are coming and this is the first we are having, sending an important message to reestablish this relationship on the basis of mutual interest and resolve. >> on 9/11 the world opened to this threat of islamic terrorism. now we have donald trump giving a major speech tomorrow. what do you expect him to stay in contrast to president obama and what opportunities can he
6:43 am
exploit? >> he will start by describing it as radical islam. he will not pull his punches as president obama did and he will be unapologetic. the middle eastern culture respects strength. bernard lewis, the famous middle east specialist said you need to remember the arabs follow the strong horse. usama bin laden wants to be the strong horse. america must be the stronger horse and donald trump understand strength that he will project that tomorrow a. i hope he cautions the saudis they have a responsibility to confront this not only militarily and economically and diplomatically but culturally because you mentioned earlier saudi arabia is one of the major sources of funding for radical wahhabi, strain of mainstream islam thinking but an offshoot
6:44 am
that gives rise to islamic terrorism and this has been a continuing problem in our relationship with saudi's, they need to make sure the stream of money that goes to radical imams is cut off. >> your former boss faces controversies, foreign trips are often an opportunity for two situations. it could go poorly or the a total reset for the administration to turn the page and get back to what the american people want their president to be fighting for. if you were advising the president what would you say? >> stay focused on the trip because things will happen at each of these stops, saudi arabia, israel, the vatican, major meetings with our allies,
6:45 am
nato meeting, stay focused on that. what he can do on that will have long-term consequences for the country and his presidency. when he comes back realize he will have wind in his back to take advantage of that by being focused on important things. this is a moment to pivot, stop tweeting about fake news or making any comment about russia and the fbi investigation or congressional investigation. this is a moment to elevate your self lose the president when he traveled abroad appears presidential. whatever that term means like good art, every american understands when the president acts the way we want. he is going to look great on this trip. well scripted, right venues, people willing and ready to give him a good hearing, eager to
6:46 am
meet him or be with him. when he comes back, take advantage of that by taking a moment to reset at home. >> such an interesting background, you have been on this before. what is going on in terms of the preparation? we have been watching this unfold, the shaking of the hand and other things. how much preparation goes into folks like you who are on this trip in terms of helping the president be his best self and representing the united states? >> a lot of work has gone into preparation of this and all of these are carefully scripted out and agreed to major points that are discussed in advance. from of people from the state department and the national security council have been working on this. typically the lead person in that arrangement is called the sherpa. this is a summit.
6:47 am
the lead person, one of the coolest titles and government, and intricate planning on everything, when it will take place, what is appropriate and what the president will say and what is the king going to say and what issues does the president want to raise or what issues does the king want to raise. they find places to diminish points of disagreement, get a common agenda and what everyone is comfortable with. this is important from one unseen perspective. there is a generational change in saudi arabia. the king is elderly, his predecessor was elderly, this king has jumped over a generation. you will see a lot of important saudi officials and their 30s and 40s. this is a chance for us to develop these relationships with
6:48 am
people who are governing in saudi arabia not for the next 10 or 15 years but the next 30 or 40 years. that is why it is important for the president to go to saudi arabia, to take a large delegation, for this to be a lengthy visit and good consequences for us. >> that is why we are covering the president's speech. >> fascinating time in history. sherpa, i like that. >> our coverage of the visit to saudi arabia continues. ng up inpence will give the a little bit. we will bring that you when that happens. busy morning when we get back. but with scotts turf builder weed & feed, bill has nothing to worry about. it kills weeds and greens grass, guaranteed.

>> you are looking at videos from riyadh, saudi arabia, today, time is 67 hour difference. when he left, the washington post and the new york times after air force one took off from washington dc, the new york post and washington post had these headlines, the new york times saying trump told russians comey used to pressure from investigation and the washington post had headline reading russia probe reaches current white house official, people familiar with the case say so. the president is flying to saudi arabia for historic first trip, within minutes of him taking off, to further the narrative. the media working together to
6:53 am
undermine this president? we will debate it. democratic strategist richard fowler and republican strategist john caldwell. you for being here. we continue to follow the president's meeting in saudi arabia. the signing ceremony coming soon. we want to debate this. it looks like mainstream media want to do everything they can minute by minute, when the president will advance american interests, whatever russian collusion or michael flynn or leaks, doesn't it look like sheer opposition? >> no. the new york times and washington post working together, that is not true. >> they are cut from the came --
6:54 am
the same cloth. >> independent journalists are trying to get to the bottom of the story and when they get information they have an obligation to report to the american people. you may not like their reporting but it is still there reporting. i think the larger problem is the trump administration is suffering a leak, so many leaks in his administration that he can't keep control of it. it is important this white house beyond promoting american strength broad, when he comes back home figures out how we deal with the leaks, who is leaking. >> that is a huge issue when this information is getting out, leaks are a big problem but there seems to be the opposition party, the desire from the left stream media to tear him down no matter what. >> leaks are a big problem they have to get under control. people at the washington post and new york times, there are
6:55 am
journalists that operate with integrity but the media agenda has been one of no integrity. the harvard study showing 98% of major outlets were providing negative pieces towards donald trump. every media outlet follows daily activities of donald trump, extrapolating things that make him look like a liar, crook or impeachable offense, this has become problematic and this is journalistic malpractice. we got to continue these stories because in the first hundred days you saw what they were willing to do even when donald trump was doing things in a way most agreed were appropriate and very presidential and problematic for folks on the left and in the media because they are the opposition party. to a degree. >> the left and the media are synonymous. to this point, this harvard
6:56 am
study, harvard did a study of media coverage of donald trump looking at cnn, msnbc, new york times and fox. 93% of cnn coverage has been negative, 93% of nbc, 91% of cbs, 80% of the new york times and fox news channel, 52% compared to previous -- donald trump 80% negative, obama 40% negative. how can you tell me these are independent journalists when they are accosting donald trump? >> the president creates the situation for himself. take michael flynn. let me make my point. he shouldn't have hired michael flynn but he hired him anyway those is advisers told him not to, his crowd size, donald trump made the report about his crowd size, he continued to tweet
