>> this morning 20 republican lawmakers are counting their blessings and lucky to be alive, they were practicing for a baseball game yesterday morning when all of this unfolded, shots began to ring out and that is when lawmakers dove into the dugout to take cover. several lawmakers like steve scalise were on the outfield, they had nowhere to go. he was shot in the hip, he started to crawl towards the outfield to get out of this raging gunbattle that was underway. witnesses said the shooting lasted nearly 9 minutes and included 50 to 60 gunshots before capitol hill police were able to take the shooter out. here's how two congressman described it. >> we are all here by the grace of god and a hand played in today if you look at potential scenarios, it would have been different. >> the situation is the real. i have been in that environment

officer, david bailey was injured in yesterday's attacks and he is praised as well for continuing to engage the gunmen after he was injured and he may have been the one that took the shooter down and save the lawmakers lives. >> that is something else. >> praising the capital police officers who stopped the shooter. >> we want to give our thanks to the first responders, the alexandria police department who were on the scene in minutes. i know this house wants to state unequivocally that we are as ever odd by the tremendous bravery of the capital police. >> these are the heroes that stopped a massacre of innocent men, women and children. >> the two officers, let's say their names again, crystal breiner, david bailey, assigned

who knew james hodgkinson react to the news of his horrific act of violence. rob: jackie joins us with more. >> reporter: investigators piecing together the background of james hodgkinson. until march he was a retired home inspector living in belleville, illinois with his wife. neighbor describes him as an angry little man. in 2006 he punched a woman in her face and dragged her daughter down by her hair, he hit a man with the butt of a shotgun and fired it in anger. friend said he had a temper but nothing like this. >> he was in a few fights and stuff like that but nothing that would demonstrate violence as far as what he did. >> what do you mean by that? >> he never backed down in a bar fight or whatever. he sto >> reporter: social media posts showing hodgkinson became troubled by the presidential election and one of the posts he

writes, quote, trump is a traitor, democracy, time to destroy trump and company. he volunteered for bernie sanders's campaign, sanders immediately addressing that on the senate floor. >> i am sickened by this despicable act. let me be as clear as i can be. violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society and i condemn this action in the strongest possible terms. >> reporter: once in virginia, he hung around the ymca just before the shooting. hutchinson became a regular at a barbecue restaurant on the baseball field, staff says he was rude but never mentioned politics. new york times reports the gunmen called his wife the day before the shooting to tell her he was coming home because he missed her and his dogs. back to you. rob: them accredited republicans bowing to take the field in honor of steve scalise.

republicans. only americans united in thoughts for the wounded. the two capital police officers who were injured are being hailed heroes across social media. arizona congressman jeff flake tweeting just met with capital police officers at the hospital, thank them for saving my life. congressman roger williams who suffered an ankle injury also praised capital police writing i would like to take the time to express my sincere gratitude to capital police officers who were at practice today. he called them true heroes. despite the shooting the congressional baseball game will take place later today. house speaker paul ryan drew tremendous applause when he announced game will go on. >> 25 minutes after the hour. stories of heroism as capital police step up to save representative steve scalise and his colleagues.

>> fox news alert congressman steve scalise is now in critical condition after being shot by a trump aiding gunmen who opened fire on republicans at baseball practice. rob: donald trump and first lady melania visiting his bedside after the learning about the politically motivated attack. we have live team coverage this morning. doug luzader at national ballpark where the shooting took place where the game tonight will take place but we begin with garrett tenney in statuary hall with breaking details.

>> reporter: after spending the entire day yesterday at the baseball field it is a miracle no one besides the shooter was killed. there was one way in and out from this baseball field. this as lawmakers were wrapping up practice. several were in the field with nowhere to hide when these gunshots broke out. police say the shooter james hodgkinson had a writer and pistol he used over the course of 9 minutes firing as many as 50 shots according to witnesses. house majority whip steve scalise was near second base when he was shot in the hip and as other lawmakers dove into the dugout to take cover scalise tried to call into the outfield to escape the gunfire. here's how one congressman described it. >> he was very calculated. he used the third-base dugout as protection. use another building as protection. he was calculated and he was hurting us into one spot.

>> a former army medic and others several others rushed over after capital police took the shooter out and made a 20 around his leg. investigators have not determined a motive but several republican lawmakers have said they believe they may have been targeted. a few minutes before the shooting began the gunmen walked up to them and asked if the players were democrats or republicans. >> the gentleman approached us and said are those republicans or democrats out there? jeff said they are republicans. the guy turned around and started walking to the field. this is a little odd. no reason to be a spectator. >> reporter: steve scalise remains in critical condition, several more seaweed surgeries were his injuries, three others are at the hospital as well. a congressional staffer, and a former staffer and capitol hill

when a member of congress is in critical condition and why is the media covering this when we are supposed to be unified? i don't think it will happen. rob: i can't help but wonder, our politicians to blame for a lot of this? they hype up so much rhetoric, so much anger, trying to inspire people to get to the polls and vote, they have to be so dramatic and make a -- make it seem like the world is going to end if you don't elect me congressman or elect me president and you can inspire crazy people to do this when you talk so big. >> a little bit of blame goes to all elected officials who take the extreme right or extreme left of any issue but since citizens united you have these echo chambers on social media, nonprofits or other political organization much more to the right or left to any politician who put out fake news, false

moving that direction and on the same page and all of a sudden somebody like donald trump comes in just polar opposite of someone like president obama. is that part of why there is so much anger and people are disillusioned? >> there is no one answer but it is a number of things, one is a 24 hour news cycle, social media and average americans are sick and tired of being sick and tired and very frustrated. there is a way to be emotional. a lot of people are emotional. we can have these debates about policy and talk about it in a way that doesn't get somebody killed. rob: last word. >> there is a difference in the way president obama was covered. he was hope and change, there were parades, people even accepting his victory for historic reasons. right now the tone is much different with donald trump being an office and it is shameful. rob: thanks for coming on this
