written then, tucker is on the mend. join me and mike cohost for "the five" up next. >> some very new disturbing information to report tonight, fox news can confirm that authorities found a list of six names of republican members of congress in a van belonging to james hodgkinson, the man who opened fire at a congressional
12:01 am
baseball game. this news adds to a mountain of as a evidence that he specifically targeted republicans. representative trent franks of arizona was one of the name on n the list. >> there are certainly many indications now that the shooter was premeditated in his actions. i have been notified that, that i might be involved in that investigation. i certainly can't go any further than that. >> can you imagine if you get this information, that your name was on the list, shooting guns at people trying to take as many people down as possible, and you
12:02 am
are one of those targets. >> who were not on the list were the cops that killed him. so we have to be reminded that if they weren't there, everybody would have been killed. we should be acting as though that is the reality. when you look at this perpetrator, he flies in the face of the media, older white man with a gun. he should be a redneck in a red hat saying "make america great again." >> what do you make of this information? is important important to have extra security. but wow, .
12:03 am
>> i don't know if he is a member of the house freedom caucus. i don't know if he was a member. it obviously wasn't random. and this idea that it comes to the baseball field and asks if those are democrats or republicans. one thing about security for these members of congress is very interesting. only the leadership has 24-hour security. imagine trying to provide around-the-clock security. they have asked the federal commission for permission to use some of their campaign funds to supplement the security like at a town hall meeting or just out in the open. i don't think they have said no,
12:04 am
but it seems to me that if it would give the members of congress confidence to be able to go out and do their work, and they would have to make use of campaign funds to do that, i'm sure that other members of congress think that they are on a list out there somewhere. if you don't have a way of protecting yourself, i think it's reasonable. they go i think it's a good idea because it's better safe than sorry. >> it's important to make this accommodation for public officials. >> the interesting and difficult situation here is, take the white house. you can even drive down pennsylvania avenue. the american people are supposed
12:05 am
to be able to go in there and talk to elected officials. there needs to beat changes in terms of meeting space, and underground is where so many meetings take place between constituents. you have meetings between speaker ryan and nancy pelosi about adding investment in security of the capital police. they should be included at some of these town hall meetings. the question is how far do you go with security? because you want to be able to speak to your representatives. >> that's the exact argument that's being made big stomach. >> i think having a list makes
12:06 am
it how partisan of an act this was. this was an assassination attempt, and the guy was a campaign volunteer for bernie sanders. i'm just trying to think of the reaction if it had been the other way. it almost seems like today, the media kind of wants to move on from the story. i was watching a lot of cable news and reading the newspaper, and they are like you know what, we talked about it, and let's move on to russia. i don't think that would happen if it was the other way around. especially on the left. what are we doing out here? are we accessories? these people on social media, if you're not having any boundaries on social media, and doing it
12:07 am
anonymously, it makes it feel acceptable to slander someone or encourage violence against someone because there's really no barriers there. because you have people going around and start pulling triggers, that's the problem. there's no distinguishing reality in real life. >> there is an argument that if you create an outlet for that, then you reduce the reality of it happening on the street. if the internet was around in the 80s or 70s, mark chapman would've been harassing from a faraway. i want to go back to the security question. there was a story today about a tennessee home owner who can't those two inmates who killed the prison guards. he held them with a gun, these
12:08 am
incredibly dangerous murderers. i'm bringing this up in the story to illustrate that guns save lives. those guys were on the run. they were on the run. they murdered two prison guards, a home owner with a gun prevented the deaths of others, the same way the police officers save those lives. so where there is a gun, people's lives are saved. >> i think we should honor that strategy tragedy that took place. i want make as a platform for guns. to me, is the professional with guns who act. >> legal gun owners are
12:09 am
professional. you're saying that they can't handle a gun. every gun owner i know it trains goes to the range. the goal >> you said only profes should have guns. i think that's wrong. >> here's my point, you have a situation where the skies given a gun, and if you look at his background, and if he had a domestic abuse case, and he still gets one. if you talk about the partisanship about this list, there are several democratic candidates said they are not running because they have threats against their lives. they live in fear.
12:10 am
there are a lot of deranged people who take any opportunity, any cause and align themselves with something, and all of a sudden we are having a political discussion of blaming one side or the other. >> let's talk about house majority steve scalise, who is still in critical condition but doctors say he will make an excellent recovery. president trump said these touching words about the congressman earlier. >> president trump: my dear friend steve scalise took a bullet for us. he is enduring but having a hard time. far worse than anybody thought. our country will perhaps become closer, more unified, so
12:11 am
important. so we all owe steve a big, big thank you. >> so that was very nice commentary, and very close to president trump and candidate trump when he was running for office. >> i think he would've been like this to any member of congress whether they supported him or not. it won't be the first time he has to play this role, unfortunately there will be other times to come. >> there is a new jersey democrat strategist who actually said this. he had little sympathy for scalise because he had lack of support for gun control. also we are at war with foolish, narcissistic rich people.
12:12 am
why is this so shocking? 48 hours after the shooting, he is posting, hunt republican lawmakers. >> that is awful and unbelievable. >> one of the stories that's not brought up enough is medical expertise. there are new and improved surgery and techniques. we always talk about our declining homicide rate. one of the reasons is because we are saving people. like casualties of war. i think that's where they learn it. we don't want to be deceived by the fact -- in some cities the homicide rate is going up in others going down. >> president trump fired up his

>> president trump was back on the road today holding a rally in miami. demanding that a cop killer gets returned to the united states. shot and killed a trooper back in 1983 and instead of spending the rest of her life in jail, she's been living a good life in cuba for years. president obama made a big splash when he reopened diplomatic relations with cuba, but that outraged new jersey troopers. president trump takes a much stronger line with the country. >> president trump: i say put an end to the abuse.
