ship. this happened in the morning when most of the sailors aboard would have been sleeping. president trump tweeted about the search and wrote this. thoughts and prayers with the sailors of the u.s. fitch gerald and their families. thank you to the japanese allies for their assistance. lucas is following the developments and has a new information. what is the status of the search for the missing people? >> good evening. the u.s. fitzgerald is back in port. the missing seven sailors could have been trapped in the compartments that flooded and were unable to escape. after 700-foot cargo ship which was heading into port turned around for some reason before the warships right side. flooding compartments were dozens of sailors were sleeping at 2:30 a.m. local time on

what can you tell us on that? >> seven u.s. army soldiers were shot and wounded today. another insider attack by afghan forces that are supposed to be allies of the united states. this occurred in northern afghanistan where the army is training afghan forces. this comes one week after three soldiers were killed in a similar fashion. the pentagon is currently weighing a decision to deploy more american troops back to afghanistan to rollback taliban gains. secretary mattis will deliver a new plan in july which officials said will look a lot like the isis fight. the u.s. military's ramping up those strike, they dropped more bombs on the ground in afghanistan than any month since 2012. president trump before he left office cut 1500s from afghanistan. so some of these few thousand additional troops will make up the difference. >> thank you. >> julie: the president is

spending the weekend in camp david. it's the first visit of his presidency. they left this morning. the president has hired another high-powered attorney to be beef up his legal team. kristin fisher is at the white house for more on all of this. it is not just the president that is alluring up, the special counsel is to? >> both sides are staffing up. it's becoming an arms race of some of the most brilliant legal minds in the country. in fact, even one of the president's own personal attorneys has had to hire his own attorney. president trump left the white house this morning bound for camp david. when he left he added another high-powered attorney to his legal team. he's probably best known for the dowd report that he put together for major-league baseball which got the former hall of famer and for life. the president is luring up at the same time he could be complicating matters for the

legal team. he confirmed on twitter that he was being investigated for firing james comey. his legal team insists the tweet was not a confirmation. he was referring to reporting about it. that tweet took aim at the deputy attorney general who appointed rod rosenstein and wrote the letter who made the case for james cummings firing up as fbi director. something president trump talked about in an interview last month. >> he made a recommendation. he's highly respected. very smart guy. the democrats like him, the republicans like him. he made a recommendation. regardless of recommendation, i was going to fire comey. >> because of those comments and because of that letter, there's a real chance that rosenstein would have to recuse himself. he could become a witness in the special counsel's investigation. >> julie: is rosenstein's job in

conversations with them. he is continuing to improve. were told by doctors that he still has a long road ahead. after nearly being shot in the hip he was facing imminent death. he has undergone several surgeries and has several more to go. eventually he will be able to walk and potentially even run again. for the other victims that remain hospitalized from wednesday shooting, where krystal garner is in good condition. and the ap reported that matt mica underwent another surgery today and is expected to make a full recovery today. >> julie: more disturbing details coming out about the moments before the gunman opened fire. we knew he has someone in the parking lot who is on the field. she appeared democrats. we also learned that he had a list with several names of gop lawmakers on it on his person.

what we know about that? >> many interesting things from that list. law-enforcement officials stress that is simply too early in the investigation to say what that list is and draw conclusions from it. they do tell us that investigators are looking into what this list was for an if the gunman was planning on using the names to visit the lawmakers on capitol hill. this list had six republicans on their including their names and their office numbers on capitol hill. the six republicans are scott -- of tennessee, trent franks of arizona, jeff duncan of south carolina, jim jordan of ohio, mo brooks of alabama and morgan griffith of virginia. last night they responded to the news that his name was on the list. >> there certainly many indications now that the shooter

was premeditated in his actions. i have been notified there is an investigation and that i might be involved in that investigation. i certainly cannot go further than that. >> one thing that stands out on the list is that all six lawmakers are part of the house freedom caucus. two of them were at the baseball practice that morning when the shooting began, including f duncan. he's one of the congressman who later recall the gunman came up to him and asked, are these players democrats or republicans. that raises questions that if you have lawmakers on the list why is it that he didn't recognize congressman duncan. maybe was just a list that he wanted to visit on capitol hill. those are details there sorting through. >> thank you for the update.
