feeter performer today on the all-american concert series brought to you by keurig right there on the stage 48th and sixth avenue. if you are in new york city, not only will you hear him, you will actually have breakfast. ainsley: never too early in the morning for barbecue. >> breakfast? steve: this is a bonus i didn't know. ainsley: welcome. happy friday. ed: back from the white house? ainsley: yesterday i got to interview the president and melania, the first lady. we will have that interview coming up. ed: great music. ainsley: we have the concert today. this is a wonderful friday here in new york city. steve: of course yesterday it was about midday when the draft proposal, the talking points with the republicans like to do with healthcare was unveiled. and also, at the same time, when you were at the white house, you asked the president and the first lady a myriad of questions. and asked about nancy pelosi, too. ainsley: that's right. some democrats are calling for her to step down. here is a little bit of our interview with the president.

we will be showing it to you all all morning long. here is some of it. >> today there are four senators saying they are not supporting the healthcare bill. four republican senators. what is your message to them. you have the white house, of the house, republicans have the house and the senate. buffalo you have these senators not on board. >> they are also four good guys and four friends of mine. i think they will probably get there. we will have to see. you know, healthcare is a very difficult situation. if you looked, the clintons tried to get it and after years and years they couldn't do it. obamacare was murder for them to get. and now it's failed. it's virtually out of business. obamacare is a disaster. and we're trying to do something on a very short period of time. interesting, ainsley, i have been here only five months, people saying where is the healthcare? i have done in five months what other people haven't done in years. people have worked on healthcare for many years. it's a very complicated situation from the standpoint you do something that's good

for one group but bad for another. it's a very, very narrow path. but i think we're going to get there. we have four very good people that he not that they are opposed. they would like to get certain changes. and we will see if we can take care of that. ainsley: we're getting word now that some democrats even want nancy pelosi to step down. a lot of republicans think democrats are in denial, they didn't win the special elections. they don't have the house. they don't have the senate. they don't have the white house. what do democrats need to do? are they in denial and what do they need to do to get on board. >> first of all, i hope she doesn't step down. it would be a very, very sad day for republicans if she steps down. i would be very, very disappointed if she did. i would like to keep her right where she is because our record is extraordinary against her. but we will see what happens. there has been a lot of talk about her stepping down. we will have to see what happens. the victory in atlanta was very big. they spent $30 million.

we had a candidate who did a very, very good job. i think i helped a lot. and we had a great candidate. but, we are 5-0 as you know in these special elections and i think the democrats thought it would be a lot different than that 5-0 is a big -- that's a big margin. and this last one was very interesting though. because they put everything into it. they had every consultant. they had agencies, advertising agency he is. ainsley: holiday? >> think of it. holiday came out. and in the end, we won quite easily. much by a bigger margin than anybody would have thought. so, they are going to have to do something. i will say this. they are right now obstructionists. all they want to do is try and obstruct. i think they would do much better as a party if they got along with us. they called and said let's work on healthcare and tax

reform. let's work on structure infrast i think american people are tired of obstructionists. i believe that when i say that boy would the people love to see two parties getting together and coming up with the perfect healthcare plan because obamacare has failed now. it's dead. the insurance companies are all flocking and leaving. and it's a real problem. ainsley: wouldn't that be refreshing if you could all come together? >> that's the way it should be. there are moments in our country's history that's what happened. greater things whether it was social security or medicare? it was two parties and got together and came one great solutions to problems. i don't think that's going to happen, but that is what should happen. ainsley: everyone is saying give him a chance. you know, people are -- it's back firing on the democrats. because they are saying just give him chance. all the nasty rhetoric. all the collusion and

corruption that hasn't been proven, all the leaks. just give him a chance so everyone can work together. ed: healthcare bill comes out. people trashing it. die if it becomes law. what they're not doing is saying this is how we would fix obamacare because obamacare is failing as the president says. that's a point that's note to be disputed. yes, there are good points of obamacare. more people are covered. also bankrupting people. also bankrupting the government. steve: all these democrats are supporting something that doesn't work. so now the president of the united states was elected president last november because of his negotiating skills. so let's see what happens. well, there are those four republicans who say we don't like this thing. i saw peter doocy yesterday up on capitol hill, and he reported that there are between 8 and 10 senate democrats who are willing to sit down and help write and adjust this particular bill. ainsley: that's wonderful. i hope it happens. ed: if their voices are actually heard. elizabeth warren and other

democrats are basically no negotiation here. this is a disaster. we are going to block it. we are going to obstruct it i thought it was very nice of the president that he endorsed nancy pelosi. steve: keep her around forever. ainsley: keep her around. we don't want to force her out. she is good for republicans. tweeted about crying chuck. he shouldn't leave either. steve: keep in mind yesterday she took the stage and defended herself. we are about to play a little bit of her defending why she should keep the job. keep in mind, at exactly the same time as she was doing it, republican democrat by the name of kathleen rice hosted a strategy meet in her office with a dozen democrats trying to figure out how to squeeze her out. ainsley: that takes some guts. steve: no kidding. i think she needs a food tester. that was going on while nancy pelosi was saying this. >> you want me to sing my praises? is that what you are saying? why should i? well, i'm a master legislator. i am a strategic politically

astute leader. i am -- my leadership is recognized by many around the country, and that is why i am able to attract the support that i do. steve: nancy pelosi is great at raising money for her members. she is great at raising money. she is not good at winning. ed: that's why a rank and file democrats are scared of her. they need money to get reelected. say i am going to turn off the spigot. who is going to come up and raise all this money. that's kept her in power. while she was projecting that confidence, her aides were privately not so confident. suggested tweets to send out. steve: to defend her? ed: so much at stake. healthcare of millions on the line. most effective legislator in history. #stand with nancy. ainsley: they did not want you to know that they were sending this out. "new york times" reporter got her hands on one of these emails that staffers sending

out to allies in the house. you can just copy and paste this tweet. just put ton your social media account. #stand with nancy. ed: getting a little despretty. steve: preview of what you will see later on today. meanwhile nancy pelosi not the only trump critic unraveling on television. over on msnbc. there is a political analyst by the name of elise jordan. she was asked by the host these tapes apparently didn't exist between the president of the united states and mr. comey. and then she has the sound bite of the day. listen to this. >> it's a sad day when you cannot depend on the president's word and my advice would be just to republicans who do cozy up to him it's like hugging a suicide bomber he blows you up in the process with him. ainsley: that's a little harsh. i was proud of the host craig said that's a little strong. she doubled down. she said hugging a suicide bomber, what?

to admit, either, that it's coast a whole lot more money and have you all these insurance companies pulling out. why isn't the former president, in order to protect his legacy, weighing i n a more positive way saying here is how we fix it? >> well, to your question, is he not weighing n a more positive way because he didn't have a lot of big signature accomplishments over his eight years as president. two of his biggest accomplishments are things that president trump is working to undo right away. one is the healthcare bill and of course the paris climate accord. and, also, we can't forget about the iran bill. these things that president obama we consider to be major legislative achievements of his eight years, which i would argue there aren't many are something within his first six months that president trump is looking to undo. that's got to sting. ed: you heard in ainsley's interview with the president. exclusive interview. more in a moment. he said look, i would throf reach across the aisle and find a way to have a bipartisan.

my schooling there. through high school. actually ended up moving to oklahoma just to go college. had no intention on staying there. wanted to go back to the west coast. and ended up doing my internship there with tulsa police department. i was hired and 20 plus years later i still am. steve: growing up actually helped you for this job. i understand a number of your friends fell into the drug scene and suddenly hey, what are you cooking? >> correct. i actually grew up in the city of san francisco itself. i graduated from high school in the suburb right outside of it just because of my age, i'm 3 years old. grew up in the late 80's, early 90's through high school. steve: crack, time of crack. >> that's what happened. gang violence. the way it exploded. crack cocaine the violence that came along with that some of my friends actually got involved in that lifestyle. so, you know, i was one of those kids around it but always made the right decision to not get in trouble. and actually just after i graduated high school some of my friends ended up getting themselves in trouble and ultimately went to prison.

i went one way and some of them went another. ainsley: now you in the gang unit and getting these bad guys and women off the streets. is that hard for you? are you arresting your friends. >> no, no, no. as i said i moved away from the bay area. some these guys we deal with so often, you know, repeatedly that they are almost like friends. we're good guys. they are the bad guy sort of speak. you develop these relationships with them. it's not necessarily adversarial in nature. you know, you see some of these kids grow up and turn into young men and you know, so you do kind of develop these kind of friendship relationships with them. steve: because you have been on the streets of tulsa for a while. people think tulsa is a great town. >> it is. ainsley: because of you are getting them off the street. steve: there is a problem and that's what this tv show is about, right? >> this tv show is basically, you know, unfiltered, it is live. it's showing its unbiased policing. you know. it's an extension of what is in most police cars these days

which are dashboard cameras, body came are as and things like that. showing the public what the officers sees a it happen. steve: do you like the idea of body cameras and dashboard cameras? >> i do. anything to do with change, it's difficult at first. you know, especially in policing. we have ways we like to do things. but, it is, i think, more beneficial to us as law enforcement. it shows the full story, not just parts of the story social media likes to spread around. ainsley: three hours of rides. we have done the ride alongs as reporters. there is lag time, down time. how do you keep the audience entertained in down time. >> the show has six different geographically andeth ethnically diverse cities on at one time. small cities, large cities, troopers, deputies, municipalities, with the six cities something might be slow on one spot it can bounce to another city and dialogue that goes on about it as well. steve: today you are sitting in one of th the big cities in

the united states of america there is a new gallup poll that says 38% of americans are less willing to go into places where there are a lot of people in attendance because they are afraid somebody is going to try something stupid either with a knife or a gun or a bomb or try to run you down. >> yeah. you know, talking about that is, that's the whole point of people doing these type of things or terrorists or, you know, whether they are lone wolves or larger groups. they are trying to alter what we do day in and day out. we can't let that happen. we have to live our lives and can't let them win severe. to be vigilant and pay attention to what's going on around you. we all have that gut feeling we see something that's not right. talk to somebody about it talk to law enforcement. talk to your joint terrorism tank force and pass it on. i assure you talking to law enforcement. everything that quoms in like that we look into. steve: we will be watching tonight live pd. sergeant sean larkin thank you very much. >> god bless you. we love our men and women in

want the best for this country. might have different opinions about what's best. ed: might be phony about it sometimes, too. ainsley: maybe. so. steve: yesterday four blocks from where we are sitting right now a hey, who is that really tall guy going into the "new york times." ed: seen him on tv. steve: wearing sunglasses. holding his coat. going in with his wife and came out with his wife and took the sunglasses off. it's the former fbi director going in to the "new york times" building. ainsley: clearly didn't want to hide it going in the front door not the back door. he was in there for three hours. steve: the "new york times" spokesperson says did he not visit the "new york times" news room however there are other businesses in that building. also, didn't go to the newsroom. ainsley: after he admitted to leaking to his journalist friends, it doesn't look good. ed: there are reporters for the "new york times" we should say who are tweeting last night and this morning that there may be a law firm in that building that had some sort of event for abused children and that james comey and his wife may have been

visiting them as a charitable thing. they were in there for a couple of hours. whether they visited more than one office we simply don't know. steve: could be a coincidence leaked stuff to somebody who leaked to them. ainsley: could be like loretta lynch and clinton thing. talked about grand kids on the plane for a long time. in there for three hours. ed: what kind of sun glasses to wear. picnic. ainsley: we did ask him about the comey tapes and did get to speak to the first lady. here was our interview yesterday at the white house. ainsley: congratulations, white house. how is it. >> enjoying it very much. ainsley: how about barron with school. >> he loves it all settled he loves it here. ainsley: are you missing new york. >> not really. so busy. and doing so many great stuff. it's an interesting place. i love it here. tonight is a great picnic, congressional picnic with all of us getting together.

it's new york city themed and carousel and great stuff outside. ainsley: great news today. you said you didn't tape james comey. do you want to explain that? why did you him to believe you did that. >> i didn't tape him. you never know what's happening when you see that the obama administration and perhaps longer than that was doing all of this unmasking and surveillance. you read all about it and i've been reading about it the last couple of months the seriousness and horrible situation with surveillance all over the place. and you have been hearing the word unmasking, a word you probably never heard before. so you never know what's out there, but i didn't tape and i don't have any tape and i didn't tape. but, when he found out that i, you know, that there may be tapes out there, whether it's governmental tapes or anything else, and who knows, i think his story may have changed. i mean, you will have to take a look at that because then he has to tell what actually took place at the events. and my story didn't change.

look, there has been no obstruction. there has been no collusion. there has been leaking by comey. no leaking and no obstruction. virtually everybody agrees to that we have to see. i can say that the people that have been hired are all hillary clinton supporters. some of them worked for hillary clinton. i mean, the whole thing is ridiculous if you want to know the truth from that standpoint. but, robert mueller is an honorable man, and hopefully he will come up within a honorable solution. ed: the left is going bonkers with some of those comments in the tweet yesterday and some of the comments to you saying donald trump was trying to intimidate james comey by suggesting there may be tapes. look, this is all going to be sorted out by robert mueller, special counsel. what's wrong with saying hey, you better tell et truth is that intimidation james comb i didn't think you should tell the truth about what happened. steve: remember when the russians went into the oval office and then there was some suggestion about what was said and russian media says hey, you want a transcript?

it's interesting, ainsley, i've been here only five months. people saying where is the healthcare? where is the heck? i have done in five months what other people haven't done in years. it's been -- people have worked on healthcare for many years. it's a very complicated situation from the standpoint you do something that's good for one group but bad for another. it's a very, very narrow path. but i think we're going to get there we have four very good people that -- it's not that they are opposed. they would like to get certain changes. and we will see if qui take care of that. ainsley: we are getting word now that some democrats even want nancy pelosi to step down. a left republicans think democrats are in denial. they didn't win the special elections. they don't have the house. they don't have the senate. they don't have the white house. what do democrats need to do? are they in denial and what do they need to do to get on board. >> first of all, i hope she doesn't step down. i think it would be a very, very sad day for republicans if she steps down. i would be very, very disappointed if she did.

i would like to keep her right where she is because our record is extraordinary against her. but we'll see what happens. there has been a let of talk about her stepping down. we have to see what happens. the victory in atlanta was very big. they spent $30 million. we had a candidate who did a very, very good job. i think i helped a lot. and we had a great candidate. but, we are 5-0 as you know. in these special elections. and i think the democrats thought it would be a lot different than that 5-0 is a big -- that's a big margin. and this last one was very interesting though because they put everything into it. they had every consultant. they had agencies, advertising agencies. ainsley: hollywood? >> hollywood came out. in the end we won. quite easily. by a bigger margin than anybody would have thought. so, they are going to have to do something. i will say this.

they are right now obstructionists. ought they want to do is try to obstruct. i think they would do much better as a peter if they goat along with us. if they called us and said let's work on healthcare together. let's work on tax cuts together and tax reform. let's work on infrastructure together. we can do it together. i honestly think they would do better at the polls. i think the american public is tired of obstructionists. and i honestly believe that and when i say that boy, would the people love to see two parties getting together and coming up with the perfect healthcare plan because obamacare has failed now. it's dead. the insurance companies are all flocking and leaving. and it's a real problem. ainsley: wouldn't that be refreshing if you could all come together? >> that's the way it should be. there have been moments in our country's history where that's what happened and those were the greatest things whether it was social security or medicare. it was two parties got together and came up with

must have done some good. ainsley: you did a lot good. >> yeah, three of them were stabbing me and slashing me. got out of the hospital the last week or so. i suffered eight stab wounds. ainsley: where did they stab you? >> i mean slashed my arms and stabbed me in me stomach, chest. cut in the head. but, hopefully in the next month or so i can be back to normal. i'm a very lucky person to survive and very grateful that i stopped the other two as well. very nice. ainsley: what made you decide to run towards these attackers when everyone else is running away as most people would do? >> i must be -- already killed

you had four senators who said they weren't on board with the republican healthcare bill. steve: nancy pelosi. ainsley: nancy pelosi. democrats are asking her to step down. big news day yesterday. steve: james comey. ainsley: right. right. this one is about james comey. this is a portion of the interview. and also asking melania what it's like to live in the white house now. listen. ainsley: congratulations. you have moved into the house. how is it? >> we are enjoying it very much. ainsley: how about barron with school? >> he loves it we are all settled. he loves it here. ainsley: are you missing new york. >> not really. i'm so busy and we are doing so many great stuff. so it's really special place. i love it here. ainsley: that's wonderful. >> tonight is a big congressional picnic with all of us getting together. it's new york city themed. and we have carousel and great stuff outside. ainsley: big news today. you said you didn't tape james comey. do you want to explain that? why did you want him to

believe that you possibly did that? >> well, i didn't tape him. you never know what's happening when the obama administration and perhaps longer than that was doing all of this unmasking and surveillance and you read all about it. i have been reading about the seriousness and horrible situation with surveillance all over the place. and you have been hearing the word unmasking a word you probably never heard before. so you never know what's out there. but i didn't tape and i don't have any tape. and i didn't tape. but when he found out that i, you know that mr. there may be tapes out there. whether it's governmental tapes or anything else and who knows. i think his story may have changed. you will have to take a look at that because then he has to tell what actually took place at the events. and my story didn't change. my story was always a straight story. my story was always the truth. you will have to determine for yourself whether or not his story changed. but i did not tape.

ainsley: smart way to make sure he stayed honest in those hearings. >> well, it wasn't very stupid. i can tell you that. he did admit that what i said was right. and if you look further back before he heard about that, i think maybe he wasn't admitting that so you have to do a little investigative reporting to determine that. but, i don't think it will be that hard. ainsley: robert mueller, do you think he should excuse himself? he is good friends with james comey. hired some attorneys party of hillary clinton's foundation and gave money to hillary clinton's campaign. should he recuse himself. >> is he very, very good friends with comey, which is very bothersome. but he is also-we're going to have to see. i mean, we will have to see in terms -- look, there has been no obstruction. there has been no collusion. there has been leaking by comey. no collusion, no obstruction and virtually everybody agrees to that.

so we will have to see. i can say that the people that have been hired are all hillary clinton supporters. some of them worked for hillary clinton. i mean, the whole thing is ridiculous if you want to know the truth from that standpoint. but, robert mueller is an honorable man. and hopefully he will come up with an honorable solution. ed: it was interesting because when you were talking about the president raising the spector of tapes and whether or not it kept james comey honest. cnn was falsely claiming james comey was going to testify that he never told the president he was not under investigation. steve: they had to go back and correct that. ed: they had to correct that because did he tell the president he wasn't under investigation. ainsley: the president was saying. the president even said collusion, corruption, never been proven. there is a leaker. the leaker is james comey. steve: as we heard from james comey during his testimony up on capitol hill, did he tell the president three times you are not under investigation.

so the president, who is trying to get something done is going okay, have you told me three times. can you tell anybody? he says nope, i can't. steve: can anybody please tell folks i'm not under investigation? that's all he wanted. now we know but we have also have the special counsel. ainsley: he knows james comey is not telling the truth to the american people. he had to do what he to do. he said you might have been taped. that's why you need to be honest. that's why james comey said you know what? the president is not under investigation and did i tell him three times. ed: big news story. jillian is all over it. jillian: here is what you need to know before you head out the door. canadian man accused of stabbing a police officer tried to buy a gun in the united states but failed. the fbi saying he illegally entered the u.s. in new york last week before traveling to flint michigan. authorities say he shouted allahu akbar before ambushing an officer from behind, repeatedly stabbing him in the neck with a 12-inch hunting knife.

when you see that the bam administration, and perhaps longer than that was doing all of this unmasking and surveillance. you read all about it. i've been reading about it for the last couple of months about the seriousness of the, horrible situation with surveillance all over the place. you have been hearing the word unmasking, a word you probably never heard before. so you never know what's out there. but i didn't tape. i don't have any tape and i didn't tape but when he found out that i, that there may be tapes out there, whether it's governmental tapes or anything else, who knows, i think his story may have changed. you will have to take a look at that because then he has to tell what actually took place at the events, and my story didn't change. my story was always a straight story. my story was as you the truth. but you will have to determine whether or not his story changed. but i did not tape. steve: so there are no tapes.

if he told the truth the president wouldn't have to tweet about that. his reputation is on the line. bigger than what the american people think about him. whether or not he will stay in office. james comey told me i'm not under investigation. he is not saying that out loud publicly. i need my record klein. american public needs to know the truth. maybe you're taped. >> i'm not say i don't understand why he is frustrated and anxious to get his side of the story out there. i'm saying some of the things he said are so ill-conceived and so undisciplined he causes himself no end of problems. talk about obama taping him in the trump tower without proof. yeah, bring on a week's worth of conversations about unmasking and so forth come to a conclusion by waste a week, a week wasted on his agenda. to talk about comey better hope there is no tapes, come on, i don't want to have to talk about that. comey will be part of a junk pile of american history. steve: it was cliffhanger.

these races. why don't they sit down, in this computer-driven age, why doesn't nancy pelosi, or some other nancy pelosi figure out who did not vote for the democrats? it is this demographic of people. why don't we design a campaign to attract people we lost in the general election? get a message. hone a message. who are you, democrats? i go back to what i've been saying really for three months now. the democratic party in my view has disappeared as a national party. they are a fractured group, almost everybody in it for themselves. they voice their frustration. they wax eloquent. they think that is part of the obsession with trump and what he may or may not have done to quash the flynn investigation. i think he they are a lost party. they need a charismatic central figure. nancy pelosi great to make money. great to bring in barbra streisand. it will not win you elections.

going in supporting that legislation because what they want is the ability to have these detainers lodged for illegal criminal immigrants and not have local law enforcement let them out the side door so they don't have to be arrested or deported. steve: with that statistic, are you saying the flood of unaccompanied minors we saw, turns out a third are gang members? >> not only gang members but ms-13 gang members. ms-13 is the in the business of killing people. it is murder incorporated. ainsley: i saw it on your show. >> they are horrific, absolutely horrific. in 2014 president obama was saying we have to let them in, they're poor, from central america, el salavador, guatemala, these are criminals coming in alone. they are not coming in with their families. they are not babies who needed their diapers changed. they are gang members, yeah i'm with ms-13, i'm latin kings. stop me from coming in?

"the art of the deal." this is where the president talked about on the campaign, as president he could negotiate a better deals for the american people. he will have to show those skills because he is right as well when he told ainsley, so you have these four conservatives like ted cruz saying we don't like this, we want to make changes. you please them, moderates like susan collins say, no, no, i don't like that. this is balancing act. they can't lose more than two votes.

will not have any democrat votes. they have to keep the republicans on board. it's a shifting. ainsley: it is tough because republicans around the country are frustrated, they thought when he won, when the house went republican, senate went republican, this will be a breeze, it will be so easy and we're going to get our way what these republicans are saying. you're seeing how the government really works. the president calls it a swamp, he wants to drain the swamp, you understand why congressman and women they have to vote with their heart, they want to get reelected and want what is best for their constituents. ed: chans for the president and house and for the democrats under well. nancy pelosi under fire. the president weighing in on all that as well. >> i will say this, they are right now obstructionists. all they want to do is try and obstruct. i would think they would do much better as a party if they got along with us. if they called us, let's work on health care together, tax cuts together and tax reform. let's work on infrastructure together. we can do it together.
